Confused about keyboard choices for MIDI/GB??

I'm a guitar player (well, in a very loose sense i can be called a player) and want to learn to play some keyboard while playing around with garage band. i want to do the hammond B3 sound, more than a piano sound. i'm hoping to get some advice here about a MIDI keyboard. i'm considering either a casio WK series, an Maudio 61 or 88, or maybe even something like a novation or roland A37.
as i understand it, a "standalone" like the casio would allow me to easily take the keyboard over to a friend's house for a jam session, while the MIDI controller style would need to have a computer, speakers, etc. transported along with it. correct? this may be a big advantage for the casio.
I see a lot of comments about the feel of the keys on different keyboards, and a number of criticisms of the casio feel in particular. but, how much difference is this really going to make to a rookie? there are some $150 guitars out there that are pretty nice, and while an $800 guitar is certainly nicer, i sound equally bad on both. is the feel/quality of the keys going to be a limiting factor? are the "pros" going to be the ones who really benefit from investing in higher quality boards like the roland?
I appreciate any information and advice.

Yes, 37 keys is not enough if you want to learn to play organ properly. If the Ozonic had 61 keys as well as everything it already has, it would in my opinion be the perfect controller and audio interface for the bedroom studio.
I'm a singer with some guitar ability who can find the chords on a keyboard one-handed; I never developed much facility with two-handed playing despite a couple of years of class piano in music college.
I got the Ozonic because I need something affordable and compact and I liked the idea of having the audio interface and the controller keyboard in one unit with FireWire.
D. T., I think you are right. Look into 5-octave, 61-key controllers. You can play the vast majority of everything you'll need on a keyboard that size.
By the way, up until the time of Mozart, Beethoven, and possibly Chopin, pianos had only five octaves. So you can play most classical music on such a keyboard as well.
And today, most organs, whether Hammond or real cathedral pipe organs, use 5-octave manuals.

  • Confused about the instructions for installing MySQL on my OS X client

I installed MySQL for OS X as recommended here:
    http://developer.apple.com/internet/opensource/osdb.html
it looks like I managed to created a test database in the mysql directory, but now can't access it.
Basically, I'm confused about what to do after installing the MySQL server about setting permissions, getting databases to be where I want them to be, etc.
I tried download phpMyAdmin, since I am used to using that via cPanel on my ISP, but don't know how to use it on my Mac. Do I need to start up Apache to do that? And if I do that, won't it interfere with the mongrel server that I'm trying to use in the separate Ruby on Rails instructions?
I guess I could probably do all my development online via my ISP, which supports Ruby on Rails and where it is easy to set up MySQL databases, but if I could just figure out how to use MySQL on my Mac it would be fun to try to do this development offline.
    Any hints?
    Thanks,
    doug

Have you done anything past those instructions? like creating MySQL user accounts, granting permissions, etc?
There's a whole lot more to running MySQL that just installing it (and I'm not sure why Apple suggest building from scratch when MySQL offer binary distributions which do all the hard work for you.
Once installed you should follow the MySQL Post Install Instructions for guidance on setting up accounts and configuring MySQL.
As for the PHPMyAdmin question, yes, you'll need Apache running. Whether that will conflict with any other web services you're running depends on how they're configured. I've never heard of mongrel to be able to advise further there.

  • Confused about System Requirements for CS6 Master Collection...

    Hi there,
For my Design Technology and Photography studies, it is recommended that I have the CS6 Master Collection installed on my laptop as well as my desktop computer (so I can still work when I'm not at school, of course) - but I'm not sure if my laptop can handle it all...
    Here's what I've got:
Compaq Presario CQ56 laptop / notebook with:
    - 2gb RAM
    - Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit, service pack 1)
    - Intel Celeron Dual-Core CPU T3500 at 2.10GHz (I'll admit that I don't know what that entails - I know it runs things, but aside from that I'm pretty clueless)
    - Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family (I don't really know what this is, either)
There's some more in-depth information about it (or at least one incredibly like it, but with a single-core processor instead of a dual-core like mine) here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-HP-Compaq-Presario-CQ56-Notebook.42285.0.html
The hard drive has plenty of room on it (about 120gb), so I'm not all that worried about the space the software will take up.  All I'm really asking is "will my laptop run this as it is, or do I need more RAM / a better processor / anything else?"
    Thanks,
    Emma
(P.S:  Yes, I know it's a pretty cheap laptop, and that the screen isn't perfect... but for my more serious work, I also plan on running the software on my home computer [which I know completely fulfils the requirements because it's exactly the same as the computers they use at school )

Well, could all the MC apps run on this system? Probably not. Could PS, AI and ID run on it along with Acrobat? Maybe. The critical factor will be, whether they actually install. Since the screen res is too small and your memory outfit is the bare minimum, you may already hit a dead end on that when the installer refuses to proceed because the requirements are not met. If it does, then using the apps probably will work, but it won't be much fun. things will feel slow and e.g. hardware acceleration in PS not be available.

  • Confusion about keyboard listeners.. Need HELP!

I have a applet. I need to query the user for a piece if information (a single digit is needed). I can't figure out how read in user input through a JTextArea. I looked up the registerKeyboardAction method but according to Sun that is obsolete and to use getInputMap and getActionMap methods instead.
I can't figure out how to use the 'Map' methods to get user input; I can't even find example code.

It kind of sounds like you want to do some processing while the user goes about entering more data on the screen.
The KeyListener is one way. Another is by using a FocusListener (the textfield has focus, then it doesn't)
It's hard to answer your question because you don't give enough info.
Perhaps you have a screen up and the user is to enter a digit, hit enter, then enter another digit and so on. In that case the KeyListener is a good option.
Perhaps you want to validate the input while the user is entering info in other areas of the screen. Here either a KeyListener or FocusListener will do it.
Perhaps the user will eventually dismiss the screen using an OK button. In that case you could just use an ActionListener.
There are lots of examples in the tutorials at www.java.sun.com, especially in the Swing Tutorial.
There is also a long, long list of example code you can find at the Developer's Connection.
    Hope this helps

  • Confused About DSL Settings for AEBS ?

I just switched to Quest DSL. I use their wired modem and connect it directly to the WAN on my AEBS. I haven't changed my old settings on the AEBS Internet Pane-Connect using Ethernet-Configure using DHCP. I am able to access the internet no problem, but not at the speeds advertised by Quest DSL, my ISP.
I have read on some posts that the AEBS should be configured using "PPP over ethernet". Would this make a difference in speed? Most of the the posters couldn't connect to the Internet at all using the Ethernet connection.
Anyone know the proper settings for the AEBS and the Network Settings on the computer?
On the Network side of my AEBS I have "distribute IP addresses" checked, as well as "Share a single IP address (using DHCP and NAT"). I am using 10.0.1.1 addressing.

I have read on some posts that the AEBS should be configured using "PPP over ethernet". Would this make a difference in speed?
No. If your ISP requires PPPoE then you would use PPPoE. Since your ISP does not require PPPoE you want to leave it disabled.
Anyone know the proper settings for the AEBS and the Network Settings on the computer?
It sounds like your AEBS settings are correct. Assuming your Mac is connecting via wireless, the settings are AirPort and DHCP.

  • I'm confused about security settings for WRT54GS!

So I enable G only, rename the network from linksys and save settings, then I open security settings, select WPA2, enter a password and save settings.  Now when I return to the wireless setup page do I have to hit the SES Lock icon?  When I do that it changes the name of the network.  If I don't hit that key my laptop still lists my network as a secure network.  If I hit that key then I believe it renames the network differently everytime, thus disabling auto login with the laptop.  I've had a wireless network in this house for over five years and have never found anyone but my adult children's laptops, my laptop and the desktop in the clients table, so I'm mostly experimenting here but would like to know how to do it, especially relative to the SES icon.  Thank You!

SES - Secure Easy Setup.  You never use this until you have read the manual to understand what it does.
SecureEasySetup is a special feature on Linksys devices that it automatically assigns your wireless network a unique wireless network name or SSID and secures your wireless connection with a push of a button. It secures your wireless connection by enabling WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) on your access point.

  • Incompatible with Yamaha YPG-625 keyboard for MIDI applications

I received a keyboard, Yamaha YPG-625 for Christmas. When I went to connect to my Mac Pro, I discovered that the CD-ROM for MIDI applications is for Windows only. First, I cannot understand why manufacturers still ignore the Mac, particularly in the realm of medis, where Mac is considered superior. Any thoughts I this point? Second, does anyone know what steps I need to take to overcome this problem? Can the Windows CD-ROM be made to work with my Mac? I have Neo Office, MacLink Plus, and several other converters. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to take the time to respond. Al

After reading your question carefully, I suspect that the Yamaha came with some MIDI editor software for which they did not provide a Mac version. If that is the case then I would agree with you that Yamaha is being lazy about giving Mac users some compatibility out of the box. I suspect that the Keyboard WILL work as a MIDI controller out of the box, however, and that you should be able to use it to control Garage Band, for example.
That leads to the next question: What exactly do you want to acomplish on your MacPro using the Yamaha as a controller? Since it has it's own sounds you can record the audio output into Garage Band and then do any (basic) editing in there. The Yamaha seems to have pretty basic sequencer capabilities (6 tracks, 5 songs) so I can certainly see how using the mac to record and edit your MIDI would expand your capabilities. To be honest, as a ProTooler I'm not too familiar with Garage Band's MIDI editing capabilites, but I suspect it covers the basics. I also suspect that whatever software was bundled with the Yamaha is also pretty basic, or "limited Edition" versions, etc.
If you are serious about recording and editing your music you might want to look into some of the other software packages that are out there. Logic Express from Apple is a pretty nice complement of features for $200 and Logic Studio for $500 should be able to do anything you might reasonably imagine is possible. There are others like Cubase, Ableton Live etc. If you need to do any recording using microphones, then you are likely to need some sort of audio interface with mic-pres and more than 2 input channels at a time. In this category, the MBoxes from digidesign are reasonable priced and you get ProTools software to boot.
My advice is to get the keyboard working as a controller for Garage Band first, play around with that program to see what a MIDI/audio sequencer can do, and then decide what capabilities you're going to need in the future.

  • Just bought a Nikon d750 and confused about adobe LR4 and PS6 support for the RAW files. I have DNG 8.7 but wondering if LR and PS will import direct soon Thanks for any advice

Just bought a Nikon d750 and confused about adobe LR4 and PS6 support for the RAW files. I have DNG 8.7 but wondering if LR and PS will import direct soon Thanks for any advice

Support for the Nikon D750 was introduced in the latest version of LR 5.7 and ACR 8.7 on Novemder 18th 2014.
Further updates to LR 4 were stopped when LR 5 was released on June 9th 2013. No further updates for bug fixes and new camera support.
Nada, LR 4 will never support Nikon D750. The Nikon D750 was introduced into the market in September 2014 some 15 months after further development of LR 4 was discontinued.
You can use the Adobe DNG program (free download for the package) to convert the Nef (raw) files from your Nikon D750 to the Adobe DNG format which will permit you to import those into LR 4. This is the crutch provided by Adobe to allow for the processing of raw files with outdated versions of LR and ACR.
You can also update the ACR plugin for PS CS6 to version 8.7 which can also work with the raw files from the D750. For direct support in Lightroom you will need to upgrade (paid) to version 5.7.

  • Confused about color vs. b/w photos for printing...and more

I reading confusing things about exporting a PDF for printing with both color and black and white images used in the same document.
If I export to PDF and do a soft-proof and it looks okay, is that sufficient? If so, what's confusing about that, since this is my first print project, which Simulation Profile do I use? Is there a chart somewhere that compares U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2 to let's say 80 lb Gloss book with Aqueous coating (C2S)?
I don't know what any of this means. So, is there a good article on this site, elsewhere, or an online printer who can help a rookie like me ensure I end up with a decent product?
UPrinting.com advertises a "Free Project Review" that includes the following:
Our team will run your file through a 30-point inspection, covering technical issues including:
    Artwork dimensions
    Bleed setup
    Low resolution images
Elements that are not within the safe zone
    Image clipping
    Font sizes
    Un-embedded fonts
    Folding setup
    Page scaling
    Line weights
    Proper text spacing (compressed/expanded)
Narrow borders that are at risk of being cut
    Compliance with USPS Mailing Guidelines
    Bindery setup for multi-page artwork
What should I do? Is this trustworthy as long as I get a contract proof? Is there a "Go To" online printer that everyone loves (not sure you can recommend that here) or should I seek out a local printer?
I'm using CS4 and have a file that's (maybe) ready to go but am looking at a learning curve of days if not weeks if I have to figure it all out myself.
    Thanks everyone.
    Paul

InDesign puts grayscale and B&W (bitmap mode) art on the Black plate, where it belongs, so if you soft proof using the CMYK profile for your expected output conditions your preview will be accurate for the grayscale and B&W images as they will appear in print. presuming your monitor is calibrated and profiled so that you can trust what you see.
Aqueous coating is applied AFTER the printing to protect, and possible enhance the glossiness of, the page (but not all coatings are glossy). This is not the same thing as printing on coated paper, which has a glossy surface and high ink holdout (and improves detail reproduction and usually will geive better color). You should be using whatever profile the printer has specified.

I'm confused about sound on my iPad 2. I know it has speakers and it makes sounds for notifications, etc. But when I play the Time Warner TV app, there is no sound. Do I need to buy speakers or headphones?

Here is my situation, iPad 1 Time Warner app works fine with or without headphones, ipad2 I can unplug headphones and it works but when headphones are plugged in I can barely hear it even cranked up, my husbands ipad2 works fine with both so what that tells me is that there is something physically possibly programmed differently.  It really makes no sense.  I might just take my ipad2 back and swap it out.  It is weird all the other sound through the iPad comes through on headphones and speakers fine.  You are not alone with your time Warner app sound issues.

  • I'm confused about the apple ID transition from my aol screen name. Does it continue to use my aol email as my apple ID, converting it somehow or do I need to provide a new email address or just create a new username for the apple ID?

I'm confused about the transition to an apple ID that doesn't use my aol email to sign in. The instructions are vague and ambiguous. Any help would be appreciated.

OK, so if your current Apple ID using your AOL Username (like johndoe), then you need to log onto Manage your Apple ID and EDIT that AOL Username to a valid email address: Apple - My Apple ID
If you have an AOL email address (like [email protected]), and you are not using that as another Apple ID, you can change the AOL Username Apple ID to that. Otherwise, you can change it to any valid email address (which you will have to verify when you change to it).
Hope that clears it up. Post back if it doesn't!

  • Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Creative Suite: New Choices for Customers

Adobe has announced the new Cloud-based model for software distribution, along with new terms for boxed product upgrade eligibility. Beginning with the CS6 releases, when they happen, upgrade pricing on boxed products will only be availble one generation back. There is a limited window to upgrade now to the current versions at a discount.
    See http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2011/11/adobe-creative-cloud-and-adobe-creative-suite -new-choices-for-customers.html

    Eugene:
Based on the current information we have (from the blog post), which may not be correct and which you should not rely upon:
There is some confusion about the word "discount." As used in the blog post, in general there are no "discounts" for upgrades, there is the upgrade price and there is full price. But, also in the blog post, there is a special "discount upgrade" if you choose to upgrade to CS5.5 today (prior to Dec. 31, 2011), which is 20% off the regular upgrade. However, Peter used the word "discount" to distinguish between upgrade pricing and full price. It's probably a good idea to avoid using that word there because of the potential for confusion.
I have CS5 InDesign in work. So I will be able to upgrade that to CS6 when it comes out at the discount price?
You will be able to upgrade to CS6 at upgrade pricing. Not the 20% discount, but it is "discounted" from the full price of CS6.
I'm still using CS2 Illustrator and Photoshop, for the little work I do in those programs, they're fine. But if I want to upgrade them to CS6 I have to pay the full amount of an upgrade, with no discount... or will I have to pay for CS6 in full for both of these programs?
You will have to pay the full price (not the "full amount of an upgrade," whatever that means).
If you elect to upgrade to CS5.5 prior to Dec. 31 of this year, however, then then you can pay the discounted upgrade price to upgrade to CS5.5 (well, CS5 since Photoshop CS5.5 doesn't exist), and then you can pay the CS6 upgrade price in March/April. So you can pay for no upgrades (full price) or two upgrades (one of which is 20% off).
At the moment I can upgrade CS2, photoshop and Illustrator for €240 each, to CS5. So wouldn't I just be able to do that now and then buy the CS6 upgrade at a much later date perhaps just before CS7 comes out?
    Yes, you can do that.
If CS6 has the tools to basically go "File>Export>Epub" and I get a fully working epub file without having to trash about in code afterwards or make complex tagging in InDesign, then I'll be buying it.
It looks like EPUB is evolving pretty fast, so even if ID CS6 fully supports what you want out of EPUB on Day 1, I bet you'll need to be prepared to postprocess it on Day 2. Or at least long before Day 200.
