Confused about tags on old pictures

I imported some old pictures & it tells me that there are tags on them & asks if I wish to import them with the tags. I say yes & they are imported. I don't see any tags. Was I being asked about some generic tag that I can't see or is there some way to see the tags that I'm unaware of? Is ther some way to display this tag information in PSE 7? Are these tags if different usable in PSE just like those created by PSE?

I think that I now know just what the problems that I have been having are coming from. I have a new PC with Windows 7 64 bit. Prior to getting this machine I made a backup to an external hard drive. I now have PSE 7 installed & working OK.
My mistake was that I was trying to import my old pictures from holders on the external drive rather than trying to restore my catalogs from the back up. Windows 7 is now aware of where my picture are but they are physically located on an external drive when they should be on my new machines "C'' drive rather than being stored externally.
I thinks that the reason that I has getting the Tags meta data displayed under imported tags rather than having my original tag structure being restored. Is this a correct assumption? If This is correct do I fix things by doing the following or is there a better way?
Select all picture & tellthe program to delete from catalog but not from hard drive. Then tell the program to restore my
catalog from the external drive. Once this has been done & confirming that indeed the tag file structure has been restored I then select all picture in the catalogue & move them all from the external drive to the correct location.

There are two aspects to iCloud. One is simply getting an account, or migrating a mobileme account to iCloud. The second part is using the various features of iCloud to sync contacts, calendars, use music match or photo sharing, and store iWorks documents.
First to get an iCloud account:
If you have a mobileme account, you can migrate by simply logging onto www.icloud.com (ignore any references to Lion and just click through to complete the migration). If you have OS X Lion or an iOS 5 mobile device, you can create an iCloud account on that device using any valid AppleID.
Once you have an account, you can use JUST the mail account if you wishi - it is a standard IMAP account so you would set it up like any other IMAP email account you have, in whatever client program you use to read email.
To use the OTHER feautes of iCloud, your computers will have to be running OS X Lion (10.7). Your iPhone 3G will never be able to use iCloud as it cannot run iOS 5 (you need a min. of an iPhone 3GS to run iOS 5).
The requirements for OS X Lion are here - http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html You need a min. of a Core 2 duo processor so you mini is not capable of running Lion.
So, in your case, the single reasons for iCloud would be if you have a mobileme account, then use the online www.icloud.com to migrate your account so you do not lose your @me.com email address. You can use iCloud email (without using any other iCloud features) by setting it up as IMAP mail with these settings - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864
If you want an iCloud account and do NOT already have a mobileme account, you will need to upgrade one machine at least to Lion in order to be able to create an iCloud account.

Confused about standby redo log groups

i am little bit confuse about creating redo log group for standby database,as per document number of standby redo group depends on following equation.
(maximum number of logfiles for each thread + 1) * maximum number of threads
but i dont know where to fing threads? actually i would like to know about thread in deep.

yes its possible and i have done it many times within the same machine.
For yours confusion about spfile ,i agree document recommend you to use spfile which is for DG broker handling if you go with DG borker in future only.
There is no concern spfile using is an integral step for primary and standby database implementation you can go with pfile but good is use spfile.Anyhow you always keep pfile on that basis you created spfile,i said you make an entry within pfile then mount yours standby database with this pfile or you can create spfile from this pfile after adding these parameter within pfile,i said cause you might be adding this parmeter from SQL prompt.

Pse7 - copy tags to duplicate pictures

Hi,
I am in a quandry and am not sure how it happened - apparently my catalog imported the photos from the original spot and the network backup - for some reason I didn't realize it (maybe the duplicates were stacked) but I never did this. Anyway - the problem I have is that many photos are tagged (and I thought that the tags were all on the initial copy) now I have discovered that the tags could be on one copy or the other. Is there an easy way to copy the tags from one picture to another if they are duplicates. Once I do this then I would like to remove the duplicates from the catalog.

There is no automatic way to do this in PSE -- you have to do it manually, photo by photo, tag by tag.
If you're talking about hundreds or thousands of photos, you could download the free Exiftool to copy all the metadata from the duplicates back to the originals. But expect to spend at least an hour or two, probably much more if you're not comfortable with command-line programs or know much about photo metadata.

PSE 7 confusion about folder location, help needed

Here's some background: I'm using PhotoShop Elements 7 on Win XP. I have an external firewire hard drive I use for overflow/backups. Originally, this showed up as a K: drive on my system.
I added a RAID controller and two more drives to stripe as a single drive for temp space rendering movies. This ended up as a K: drive and the external moved to L: However, when I did this there were some pictures from my catalog that I had on the external drive. I have used File > reconnect missing files to handle the moves, but PSE is still confused (very).
PSE has started to mix up the RAID (K:) and external (L:) content. If I move a set of pictures (e.g. a folder of them) onto the external drive (L:) via drag and drop in the folder location view, the folder will show up empty on the L: heirarchy, but will show up as a gray folder icon in the K: RAID drive hierarchy. If I open up windows explorer, the RAID drive will appear empty. In other cases (I'm not sure when/how yet), pictures physically end up on the RAID drive itself instead of the external. I have uninstalled both the external drive and the RAID drive and reinstalled them both, but they are still getting confused in the folder view by PSE. I've also tried moving content outside of PSE and just reconnecting missing files, but it still wants to put things under the K: RAID drive instead of the external L:.
I've searched everywhere I can think of for a description of what gray folder icons in the folder location view means and can find none. I'm not sure how to convince PSE that there's nothing on the RAID K: drive and it shouldn't try to connect the two. Any suggestions?

Thank you! I ran psedbtool and the output shows the catalog has the wrong drive letter for the L: drive.
Is there a way to make PSE forget about the K: and L: drives that it is so confused about so that it can relearn of their existence? If I use the drive letter reassignment to fix PSE, it will break other apps that are now dependent on the current drive letter assignments. I've tried removing all files from the L: drive, but it's still remembered as part of the catalog.

How do I get my old pictures back? They were said to be backed up.

Recently, I synced my iPhone with my old laptop, which contained about 6000 pictures. A few days after that, I reformatted my computer which meant those picture files are only left on my iPhone.
Yesterday, i synced my iPhone with my new desktop (although I only wanted to sync my music), and ended up losing all 6000 pictures that I had. Before losing those pics and during the syncing, I saw that iTunes were backing up my files. Question is, how do I get my old pictures back? =( Please help me. =(

Very sorry, but you cannot get them back from the phone or its backup. Photos synced from a computer _are not_ backed up as part of the iPhone backup process (only Camera Roll pics, those actually shot with the iPhone, are backed up). See this kbase article for info on what is and isn't backed up.
Hopefully, you have an existing backup of the pics on an external drive, etc., or some other way to get the pics back (originals on CDs, prints to scan, etc.). If the pics were still on the phone, 3rd party software could have been used to get them off (although at reduced quality, since pics synced to the phone are reduced to ~0.6 megapixel images).

Old pictures on the desktop and invisible dock when I change user

I have a late 2011 macbook pro with Mountain Lion installed. This problem came out with this OS. In practice, when I log in with my secondary account (without password) and change to the administrator account (with password), the Mac loads old pictures on the desktop, and the thing where the dock's icons usually stand is invisible.
This appears not to be shown when I log back into the secondary one and re-log in the Admin.
Why this happens? And how do I fix it? Help please, it's getting quite annoying...

IMO a 4 year old laptop is too dated to run the new OS X bloated versions, it should have stuck with 10.6.8 max, but it's likely too late to go back now as you have too many files and programs in the later OS X versions.
However if you don't care and have basic type files that are neutral state file formats, like they will work on any Mac/PC or Linux machine (like pictures, music files etc) then you might be interested in going back to Snow Leopard for performance.

Confusion about disc setup.

I've read lots and lots about how best to set up discs for Premiere Pro but I'm sitll confused about my own particular setup and was wondering if some nice person here could advise me on how I should proceed.
I have just built a new PC for video and picture editing which consists of a 6 core Intel i7, Nvidia 680, 32GB Memory (Windows 7 Pro to utilise it all) and 3 hard drives consiting of 2 SSD's and 1 mechanical, all conected via 6Gbps SATA.
I have the hard drives arranged as 128 GB SSD for system and programs, 1 TB larger mechanical for footage and 128GB SSD for cache.
So in Premiere Pro I have Edit>Preferences>Media as follows:
Media cache files pointing at the cache SSD
Media cache database pointing at the cache SSD
In Project>Project Settings>Scrath disc I have:
captured video same as project, that is the mechanical 1 TB footage drive
captured audio likewise
Video previews set to the cache SSD
Audio previews likewise
also in the general tab I have video rendering and playback as Mercury engine GPU acceleration
Does that concur with the wisdom of you more experienced users?

It should be fine. Just keep an eye on your preview files to ensure that they don't start to get too large for the SSD.
They probably won't because rendering is required less often but you want to keep en eye on it. It all depends on your workflow and the tye of effects you use.

Confused about conversation grouping Lion vs. Snow Leopard

Hello All,
I just upgraded. Literally just finished. I was checking out mail, and I am confused about how Mail 5 groups messages for conversations. In SL I had Mail group related messages as well, and it's a feature I really enjoy. Conversations just makes it that much better. But, I notice that Lion groups message differently than both SL and iOS. Now, it is no longer grouping emails that are all from various people but are part of the same thread. It is grouping multiple messages from the same sender, even if they have nothing to do with each other, or are only loosely connected.
It used to be (and still is on my iPhone) for example, that all the emails eminating from a single thread topic on one of my class forums would all group together. They have the same subject line and formatting. It was heaven. Will there be no way of doing this?
Also, now all the emails from the teacher of that class, regardless of the relevancy or subject line, group together in one conversation. It's annoying in a way, but I think I can get used to that. Does anyone know if these will be able to be changed in the future?

As a Mac power user - LION IS A DISAPPOINTMENT
Apple needs to seriously consider briniging back
• SPACES: the capability to move up as well as down to access applications
     AND have applications stay in a desgnated space makes it much easier
     to run multiple applicatioins - especially in a multi-monitor environment
• SAVE AS: Saving various versions of a file is difficult with Lion.
    If I want a 3 versions of a document - with different pictures, it takes too many "clicks" to accomplish
     this task. LET ME CHOOSE HOW I STORE FILES
• COPY COMMAND: Snow Leaopard allowed me to copy files to a storage device AND if the file
     was already written to the device - the option to NOT REPLACE the file existed. This made it
     easy to backup work on a portable drive.
     LION ONLY has two options - copy all or make an addition copy of the file, causing storage bloat
APPLE NEEDS TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDER PUTTING THESE FEATURES BACK INTO THEIR OS FOR THE BUSINESS AND POWER USER

i'm confused about how exactly udev identifies a device, imho the idProduct identifier is (in this specific case) inconsistent.
Short story:
'lsusb' and 'udeadm info' indentify the devices idProduct as "1002", but to get udev rules working i have to use ATTRS{idProduct}=="1001" though.
Long story:
I have this usb-to-midi device (midisport 2x2), which needs to load firmware to work (midisport-firmware). This is the udev rule to load the firmware:

The midisport box is the only device where this inconsistence appears, all other usb-devices (hdds, sticks, sound card, dvb-t stick, mp3 player) get identified as expected.

Looking at the udevadm info output, it shows ATTR{idproduct}=="1002" and ATTRS{idproduct}=="0001" and your rule uses ATTRS{idproduct}=="1001".
Have you tried with just ATTR{idproduct}=="1002" (note no S)? Looking at the output of info, I would still not expect ATTRS{idproduct}=="1001" to work, but udev's changed a fair bit in the last few years and the old bible for rules is way out of date.

I restored my iphone from a backup that is about one month old (because all my contacts had disappeared). Is it possible to retrieve the text messages that occurred after that back up. They disappeared after the restore.

I don't know if I'm on the same page as you.
But if you backed up the phone with those contacts pictures notes etc, you should get them back.
After restoring your phone, use the back up that done when you had those contacts messages etc??

Confused about the new Creative Cloud

Dear all,
Since I read adout the new Creative Cloud I am confused about what is going to happen to my license for Adobe Lightroom. Are they going to still maintain the desktop applications as well or will I have to pay for a yearly license if I want to use the new versions of Lightroom?
I am a casual photographer and I love using Lighroom for my pictures but I don't think that paying for a yearly license because I am not spending a lot of time editing pictures.
Can someone clarify this for me?

The CC is geared towards Pro users, schools etc. LR spans both Pro and casual users. So from what I can garner Lightroom will stay as it is for the next iteration at least. I quoted that bit as my opinion is that that is the very reason why Lightroom will be available outside the cloud with a cloud version available with intergration features with the rest of the CC suite.

As the title says I'm horribly confused about student licensing and using it for commercial use.
I currently have a Student Licensing version of Adobe Creative Suite 4 that I purchased through my school's journeyEd portal.
Seeing how CS5 is now out I was browsing looking at prices (why not upgrade while I'm still a student, right?) and while browsing I bumped into one source that says that Student Licensing can not be used for commercial purposes, and this is when the confusion started. I remember reading before that we are able to use student licensing for commercial purposes, okay time to google search. I found one Adobe FAQ that says I can. .

Okay cool, hmm what this? Adobe is asking me if I want to IM with live costumer service agent, sure why not? Then the conversation started and I asked her my question about using my CS4 license for commercial use, she asks for my product code and email to verify my product, then informs me I can purchase the upgrade version of CS5 and use that for commercial, okay great, but not really answering my question. I reword it and give her a link to that FAQ page it goes like this. ..

SO my questions are. . . Can I or can't I use my Adobe Creative Suite 4 student licensing for commercial purposes? and If I purchase a Student Licensing of CS5 can I use that for commercial purposes as well?
Sorry for the long post, I just want to be perfectly clear on what I can and can not do with my purchase.

The rules differ in various parts of the world. In North America you can use it for commercial work.
There are no student/academic upgrades. The pricing is so low that in many cases you're better off buying another full student license but you are eligible for upgrade pricing for commercial versions once you're out of school.
You may not transfer the student license in any way.
