Confused about upgrade to OS X 10.6.8
Hi all,
I have a MacBook Pro (circa 2006) which is running on OS X 10.5.8 and I want to upgrade it to OS X 10.6.8. so that I can sync my new iPod Touch 5G. The iTunes on the MacBook has version 10, but it tells me that it needs version 11.1 and I cannot download the newer version of iTunes until I update my OS X to 10.6.8 However, someone has told me that I first need to upgrade to OS X 10.6.1, then again to OS X 10.6.3 and then again to OS X 10.6.8 He has explained that I cannot go from OS X 10.5.8 straight to OS X 10.6.8? Why not? He has also said that iTunes might require OS X 10.7.1 for my iPod Touch to sync properly. Well I am certainly confused now so hopefully someone will guide me on this one please.

You just need to purchase the Snow Leopard (10.6.x) upgrade from the online Apple Store (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard), install the upgrade and then update your system with the 10.6.8 Combo updater (Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1). Then you'll be at 10.6.8.
I haven't had an iPod for years now, so I'm not sure about which version of iTunes you actually need... you may want to try asking on the iPod users forum (iPod).

Confused about upgrading Video card on 1st Gen Mac Pro
When looking in the Apple store under video cards it looks like the 8800 or even the ati 2600xt say :
PCI Express 2.0 but under the reviews for the ati card there are a few posts that say they used this card to upgrade their '06 ' and '07 Mac Pro from the Nvidia 7300 ...
But if the older Mac Pro's dont have pci express 2.0 how can this be ?
I also have read that a nvidia 8800 for the 1st gen mac pro may come out but what if it does not ? Whats the deal ? Will there be a video upgrade path for the 1st gen mac pro or not ?

Even my 4 year old PC has video options and its agp !If you are bored you might be able to find an early post of mine from the early MacPro days when I commented that MacPro buyers should only buy if they can live with never being to upgrade the graphics card. Apple is Apple and if you know the history of Apple you know that graphics cards are all but ignored. I remain hopeful that Apple, through nVidia, comes out with an 8800 for older Mac Pros, but I don't count on it. The MacPro line has glaring strengths and glaring weaknesses and the dearth of video cards is a glaring weakness. Still better a MacPro with this weakness than a PC box, but with no official word from Apple and all this expectation from a single comment by an nVidia PR person (PR for gosh sakes!), I don't find the rumor to be terribly credible. Hope I'm wrong. Very much so. Hope the oft quoted email by steve j. regarding it being looked at is on the money and we have an announcement tomorrow. Holding my breath till then....

When I signed my contract in May of 2010 they told me I would get an upgrade in January of 2011 and on My Verizon it shows I don't get an upgrade until January of 2012. Was I told wrong? I signed up at the little kiosk in the mall.

There are two aspects to iCloud. One is simply getting an account, or migrating a mobileme account to iCloud. The second part is using the various features of iCloud to sync contacts, calendars, use music match or photo sharing, and store iWorks documents.
First to get an iCloud account:
If you have a mobileme account, you can migrate by simply logging onto www.icloud.com (ignore any references to Lion and just click through to complete the migration). If you have OS X Lion or an iOS 5 mobile device, you can create an iCloud account on that device using any valid AppleID.
Once you have an account, you can use JUST the mail account if you wishi - it is a standard IMAP account so you would set it up like any other IMAP email account you have, in whatever client program you use to read email.
To use the OTHER feautes of iCloud, your computers will have to be running OS X Lion (10.7). Your iPhone 3G will never be able to use iCloud as it cannot run iOS 5 (you need a min. of an iPhone 3GS to run iOS 5).
The requirements for OS X Lion are here - http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html You need a min. of a Core 2 duo processor so you mini is not capable of running Lion.
So, in your case, the single reasons for iCloud would be if you have a mobileme account, then use the online www.icloud.com to migrate your account so you do not lose your @me.com email address. You can use iCloud email (without using any other iCloud features) by setting it up as IMAP mail with these settings - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864
If you want an iCloud account and do NOT already have a mobileme account, you will need to upgrade one machine at least to Lion in order to be able to create an iCloud account. -
Just bought a Nikon d750 and confused about adobe LR4 and PS6 support for the RAW files. I have DNG 8.7 but wondering if LR and PS will import direct soon Thanks for any advice
Support for the Nikon D750 was introduced in the latest version of LR 5.7 and ACR 8.7 on Novemder 18th 2014.
Further updates to LR 4 were stopped when LR 5 was released on June 9th 2013. No further updates for bug fixes and new camera support.
Nada, LR 4 will never support Nikon D750. The Nikon D750 was introduced into the market in September 2014 some 15 months after further development of LR 4 was discontinued.
You can use the Adobe DNG program (free download for the package) to convert the Nef (raw) files from your Nikon D750 to the Adobe DNG format which will permit you to import those into LR 4. This is the crutch provided by Adobe to allow for the processing of raw files with outdated versions of LR and ACR.
You can also update the ACR plugin for PS CS6 to version 8.7 which can also work with the raw files from the D750. For direct support in Lightroom you will need to upgrade (paid) to version 5.7. -
Confused about conversation grouping Lion vs. Snow Leopard
Hello All,
I just upgraded. Literally just finished. I was checking out mail, and I am confused about how Mail 5 groups messages for conversations. In SL I had Mail group related messages as well, and it's a feature I really enjoy. Conversations just makes it that much better. But, I notice that Lion groups message differently than both SL and iOS. Now, it is no longer grouping emails that are all from various people but are part of the same thread. It is grouping multiple messages from the same sender, even if they have nothing to do with each other, or are only loosely connected.
It used to be (and still is on my iPhone) for example, that all the emails eminating from a single thread topic on one of my class forums would all group together. They have the same subject line and formatting. It was heaven. Will there be no way of doing this?
Also, now all the emails from the teacher of that class, regardless of the relevancy or subject line, group together in one conversation. It's annoying in a way, but I think I can get used to that. Does anyone know if these will be able to be changed in the future?

If I want a 3 versions of a document - with different pictures, it takes too many "clicks" to accomplish

• COPY COMMAND: Snow Leaopard allowed me to copy files to a storage device AND if the file
was already written to the device - the option to NOT REPLACE the file existed. This made it
easy to backup work on a portable drive.
LION ONLY has two options - copy all or make an addition copy of the file, causing storage bloat
APPLE NEEDS TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDER PUTTING THESE FEATURES BACK INTO THEIR OS FOR THE BUSINESS AND POWER USER -
Confused about XPostFacto and the 8GB Limit - Please help

I've been running XPostFacto 4.0 on my Apple G3 Desktop (Rev C, 640MB Ram, 533 Mhz G4 OWC CPU upgrade) for sometime and is running great.
But I have a question about the 8GB rule.
This computer only runs off of a Seritek SATA card. There is a 35 GB Raptor drive on it, the first 7.81 GB is the 10.3.9 drive, and rest is for applications and files.
I added a 160 GB Hitachi drive to the SATA card that I moved from my G4 MDD computer. It already has 3 partitions: 30 GB for 10.3.9, 10GB for OS9, and 115 GB for audio production files.
If I wanted to boot off the Hitachi drive, would I have to re-format and create a 8 GB partition?
As is, if I try to boot off the drive I just added, XPostFacto tries to synchronize the files, then it invariably crashes.
I tried reading the manual again, but I get confused about the Mac OS X Installer and the 8GB rule, and so on.
Thanks!i wound up erasing the partition on the transferred drive and carboncopycloning the beige's OS X drive to it...and now the transferred drive is booting ok!
now, i'm thinking of copying the whole raptor drive over and re-partitioning the raptor drive (strangely, the raptor appears with about 9 partitions on Disk Utility, though the only two that i created are clickable...wonder if the OS sees this drive as something like scsi).
this is a little asides the point, but on my MDD, the 7200 hitachi seemed to test as "faster" than the 10000rpm raptor in most categories. would the 7200 drive infact be better for OS style-tasks?

I'm horribly confused about student licensing and commercial use
As the title says I'm horribly confused about student licensing and using it for commercial use.
I currently have a Student Licensing version of Adobe Creative Suite 4 that I purchased through my school's journeyEd portal.
Seeing how CS5 is now out I was browsing looking at prices (why not upgrade while I'm still a student, right?) and while browsing I bumped into one source that says that Student Licensing can not be used for commercial purposes, and this is when the confusion started. I remember reading before that we are able to use student licensing for commercial purposes, okay time to google search. I found one Adobe FAQ that says I can. .

Okay cool, hmm what this? Adobe is asking me if I want to IM with live costumer service agent, sure why not? Then the conversation started and I asked her my question about using my CS4 license for commercial use, she asks for my product code and email to verify my product, then informs me I can purchase the upgrade version of CS5 and use that for commercial, okay great, but not really answering my question. I reword it and give her a link to that FAQ page it goes like this. ..

Sorry for the long post, I just want to be perfectly clear on what I can and can not do with my purchase.The rules differ in various parts of the world. In North America you can use it for commercial work.
There are no student/academic upgrades. The pricing is so low that in many cases you're better off buying another full student license but you are eligible for upgrade pricing for commercial versions once you're out of school.
You may not transfer the student license in any way.

Another question about upgrading RAM on G4 iMac
I know that there are numerous threads on this forum about upgrading RAM and I am sorry to have to open another one but, having read many of them, I am still confused!
I have unopened copies of Leopard and ILife 08 that I am planning to install on my 17-inch 1GHz G4 iMac with 768 MB of RAM (256 MB in the factory slot and 512 MB in the user accessible slot). I know that this model does not support all the functions of these programs but I am currently running Panther and the very first iLife so I think it's time for an upgrade!
Apple states that this model supports up to 1GB RAM so I have been thinking that in order to get the best out of the new software I should upgrade to 1GB RAM. My questions are:
1. Do I need to upgrade or is the existing RAM of 768 MB likely to be sufficient?
2. If I upgrade, how easy is it to add RAM to the factory slot? I have searched but can find no instructions on this here or on the Apple website which implies that this is not recommended.
3. Several threads on this forum seem to suggest that, in order to avoid having to mess with the factory slot, it is possible to put 1GB RAM in the user accessible slot and leave the factory slot well alone, resulting in total RAM greater than the maximum recommended by Apple. Is this correct or have I misunderstood?

That will probably be sufficient. You could always install and run both Leopard and iLife '08 and see if you feel that they are working OK before buying any RAM.

Apple does not post the directions because this is not considered something that a user can do by themselves.

That is correct. You could replace the 512 MB in the user accessible slot with 1 GB to provide a total RAM of 1.256 GB. -
Confused about update method in JComponents

I'm a bit confused about the update method in JComponents. What I remember from applets was that the update method was called whenever something changed such as a window being dragged across it or something.
I've written a class that extends a JPanel and overwrites the paint method. Any components I add to it aren't drawn. I can add JComponent.update() methods to my paint() method but this is very inefficient as I'm having repaint() called by a thread 15 times a second. I tried to put the update methods in the JPanels update() but that doesn't work, in fact update isn't called at all. What does update do ?Let me take another crack at it...
1) Grab the 9.2.0.8 patchset for the Oracle database (i.e. patch 4547809 on Metalink assuming you're using 32-bit Windows). Install this to upgrade your Oracle client to 9.2.0.8. Installation instructions are in the README.
2) Grab the 9.2.0.8 Oracle ODBC driver, which you already appear to have, and follow the installation instructions in the README you're looking at.

I'm confused about 'downloading' options via iTunes
When updating via iTunes, you get two options: (1) Download & Install NOW or (2) Download only [to install later]. I chose the 2nd option, as I wasn't quite ready to update my iPod touch to iOS 5. The download went surprisingly quick... took only 5 minutes. I thought it was strange, considering that people were Tweeting left and right that it was going to take 5-7 hours for their downloads to complete. When I finally went to update my iPod several hours later, instead of the update being there and ready to install... iTunes connected to the Apple Servers and started downloading the entire iOS 5 from the BEGINNING! Now, I'm also getting the estimated 7 hours to complete mantra. What gives? What the h*** is the purpose of giving me an option to download and install at a later time, if that's now what actually takes place? What am I confused about? Can anyone provide some insight? I'm highly upset right now.

I am confused about something. How do I read a book on my MacBook Pro? I can't find the iBook app anywhere, which is what I use on my iPad. The book I want to read is in my iTunes but I can't click on it. Some of my iBooks show up in my iTunes but they are "grayed" out. The only books that respond in iTunes are audiobooks and that's not what I'm looking for. Is this a stupid question?
Nevermind - I answered my own question, which is I CAN"T READ ANY BOOKS I purchased in iBooks on my MacBook Pro. If I want to read on my mac I have to use Kindle or Nook. Which means any book I've already purchased through iBooks has to be read on my iPad. Kind of a drag because there are times when it's more convenient for me to read while I'm sitting with my Mac.

AGL Rendering over entire window (titlebar, etc...)
I am using Carbon/AGL to render some textures to a Cocoa window. When the rendering first begins, the texture draws over the entire window covering the title bar, the red, green, and yellow buttons, and the resize triangle. All of these controls stil
