Confused as to what to buy - brand new, refurbished

I got my first Apple back in 2009. And still have it. It is a 15 inch MacBook Pro. However, it not does not hold its charge, the charger is giving up the ghost, the keyboard is very worn and it "timesout" alot and "crashes" quite a bit. Time for a new one I think and keep this as a back-up.
But that is where I get confused. I am not sure whether to go for an older refurbished Macbook Pro or a new one. I want the 15 inch screen and a MacBook Pro. I don't do any major graphics on it, it is used for my work but that basically consists of emails, general internet surfing and a few documents and spreadsheets (usd Office in the past on this current Mac). I would like something quick. I don't store too much on the Mac, mainly photos, emails, some documents. I have not used the 250 GB of storage this one has, and could and will give it a good clear out.
So at the moment my choices are:
Brand new from apple - the Retina model with 16 GB RAM, 256 GB flash drive, 2.2 i7 Ghz processor with the turbo boost but its £1599
Or could go for an apple refurbished one - there is an October 2013 model, 8 GB Ram, 256 GB flash, 2.0 Ghz with turbo boost for £1189
Or there is an Apple MacBook Pro MC975BA 15 inch retina display, 16 GB, 256 GB SSD for £1149, a 2012 model I think from a third party seller. But this does not have the turbo boost, not the new flash storage, although not sure this makes any difference to me for what I want it for. But does have the 16 MB RAM. But its not from Apple.
Or could go for older refurb ones for around £700 to £800 and some have more hard drive capacity up to 500 GB...........mapleuk do quite a lot.
Any thoughts. I am not a computer person particularly so its all a bit over my head but understand more RAM will make much quicker, the Retina display just gives better graphics and not sure I would notice the difference or even need this........
I know I could get things updated but at the moment don't really have time to do this as we don't live near an apple store and we are leaving to go abroad fairly soon.

I have purchased three refurbished MBPs from APPLE and I feel it is an excellent option.  Warranty, Applecare and telephone support is identical with a 'new' one.
That will not be the case with one from a third party seller.  You will have to balance the cost differential in order to determine if the refurbished is worth it.
You perhaps should consider the costs to upgrade your current MBP.  Installing the maximum amount of RAM with a SSD might be a good option and keep the financial outlay to a minimum.
Ciao.

  • My Brand New Refurbished Ipod Touch is not working

I just bought a brand new refurbished Ipod touch 32GB (current generation), after a week it shows flickering white screens. I seldom used it for the whole week. When I went to apple service centre they told me that the water leak indicator turns into purple colour supposedly white. I ask them, how this thing can happen, because honestly I was always keep it safe and never been contact to any liquid or soak into water. Then I went to another service centre to get second thought – same feedback was given to me. The warranty was void because of the water leak indicator turns into purple colour.
Anyone can help me to resolve my case? Honestly, I seldom used my Ipod touch, never been contact with water and it was always safely kept. Maybe there is some problem down the factory line, why it was refurbished? What is the history of this iPod touch? Maybe from there, something can help me that can prove that is the original problem of this iPod touch.

i also got a refurb Touch. luckily, mine works as expected.
a refurb enjoys the same warranty as a new one. take yours to an Apple store near you and have it replaced.

  • Can laptop serial number be registered before you buy brand new?

I bought a brand new MacBook Pro but it was registered but both seller and Apple are saying it was a mistake. I bought it in New York but the computer was registered in Florida (educational institute) to a student. Can computer be registered by mistake?

It should not be. If it was then someone purchased it, registered it, then returned it. You have actually purchased a return item. I would have it replaced if you are within the 14 days after puchase.

  • What to buy? New imac or MacPro/Apogee? Does anyone know? Please help!

So I'm running Logic Pro & Pro Tools.
    I use a
    15' MacBook Pro
    Universal Audio LA-610 Mic Pre
    Yamaha MSP7 Speakers & Sub
    Digidesign 003 Factory on order.
I keep getting Core Audio "Disk too slow or System Overload".
    (Example-On a 23 audio track session).
I want add to my setup so I don't get so many latency issues and this problem on bigger sessions.
Where do I spend the money?
I was Looking at the new imacs? The 24" 2.8GHz or should I go a MacPro?
I wanted to buy a bigger screen too. So maybe I spend a little more money and get a whole new computer for my studio instead of using my MacBook Pro.
Or just buy a bigger screen and spend the money on memory?
Do I spend it on Apogee? If so what should I buy?
Can someone please give me some Pro advice?
    Thanks guys, really appreciate it.

    Thanks guys.
    Well I have some external hard drives OWC/Lacie etc 400 & 800.
    I have that setup going.
I'm basically recording my solo album and also getting into more TV spots & Trailer/Film music.
    Using Stylus/Ivory/Philharmonic strings etc....
So I'm doing what they say and recording to external drives.
I guess the imac isn't a good option as I need to be able to update my system.
To start to get into more of a Pro Arena should I look at the Apogee Symphony mobile setup or the Ensemble?
    More memory?
What else is going to give me the power to make this music without getting inot latency & coreaudio problems?
    Really appreciate the help guys!

  • What to buy a new iPod touch, what about the bought apps?

I am thinking about changing my iPod touch first generation to a new one.
Can I transfer all my apps to the new item or do I have to buy them again?
    Who has experience here?

i've just done this. you just need to make sure you backup your old ipod touch first, then when you plug in your new ipod touch, rather than setting it up as new, restore it to the backup. as previously pointed out, as long as everything is in your itunes library on your computer it will just replace it all and your new ipod will look just like the old one.

  • Memory if I buy brand new imac dual.

Can I buy the 1 stick 1 gig of memory and leave the other slot empty for future memory.....
or do i have to use the other slots? say with the 2 512's or something?

I bought my directly from Apple. It's way more expensive but I didn't want to have to wait for it to arrive in the mail. I picked up the iMac and memory the same day from the Apple Store in Short Pump Town Center close to Richmond, VA. If I get another 1GB stick, I will go with Crucial. All the memory I have added to my G4 Digital Audio machine came from them and I've had no problems with it. Other posters in these forums like Other World Computing. They have a guarantee similar to Crucial but I have no first hand experience with their memory.

  • Brand new macbook pro cannot connect to wireless networks

The first time I called apple tech, they thought it was a problem with my internet provider. I've called 4 times now, and I'm still getting the runaround.
I have an old (2001) G4 sitting right next to my macbook pro which can see numerous wireless networks and connect to them all. A strong connection at that. However, my brand new (refurbished) Macbook Pro Intel etc,.... supposedly best computer ever made, . . . . can see the same wireless networks but has never been able to connect. As a student, I saved for a year to buy this notebook so I could work at cafe's & study with my friends. My friends with PC's can all connect to these wireless networks. My friends with older, less expensive notebooks can connect no problem. I have never been able to connect. Bought this peice of junk 2 1/2 months ago - only because I didn't want to be stuck at home anymore with my desktop. Stupid me to trust apple.
I wish I could get my $ back, but I'm now being told that it's 30 days too late. Before they told me it was a minor thing and some software update could fix it. I did as told. downloaded and installed their 10.4.8 thingy - deleted all the keychain stuff - nothing. same peice of junk.
Now they are telling me to go back to the genius bar where folks are just rude to me and tell me they can't help me becuase I bought a "refurbished" model that didn't even save me $25. What do you know.
Anyone having problems like this? Anyone out there who can help me?

    Okay,
I apologie for calling it a peice of junk. I know you all probably worship this machine. I'm just really frustrated. I noticed that this is a very common problem - though most of the posts identical to mine have dissapeared from apple.com - this well known defect is all over other discussion boards and websites like macdefect, etc,....
So, can any of you tech gods help me with this very well known, common problem that I haven't been able to fix with 10.4.8 upgrade?
Thanks for your time and assistance,
    -mcgrafx

  • Where can I buy a Brand New Apple Cinema Display 30"?

    Hi,
I Already posted my question in the older Display topic, but I'm not sure it was the good place, so I post it here. If it's not the good place, you can move my thread to the good topic. Thanks.
I'm looking for mounths to buy a brand new 30" Apple Cinema Display. I went to some Apple reseller/Apple Stores and each of them didn't really knew where I could buy it since it's discontinued. I can't believe there is no brand new 30" Apple Cinema Display lying around in some Apple Stores/Apple general center at Toronto or anywhere in USA.
I really want one of them, and I'm ready to make anything to get one (phone call etc). I would like to get some help of where I can call or where I can go to get what I want. The price doesn't really matter now.
    Thanks!

Have you done google searches for it ("Apple 30" cinema display")?  That's all I can recommend.
A quick google search turned up this page which apparently lists some new 30"s.
Note, I did not follow those links to see if "new" really meant "new".

  • I'm buying a new Macbook Pro this week and am wondering what is the best way to copy over the software I have from my existing Macbook Pro to the new one? eg. Photoshop and Office etc. I no longer have the CDs.

Ya know what I'm on a brand new MBP just about 24 hours old and you know whats been working amazingly for me. I have a 27inch iMac as well and i've just connected it to my network and been dragging files and apps across the network onto my new MBP. Its really working fast and its flawless. You could always do that option, Just go into sharing options and turn them on for both Macs. Then just click and drag. Of course they have to both be on the same network for this to be possible.
    Look at my network.
Shared is what your looking at.  I click on there see all my computers files and then drag the ones i want form its folder to my MBP folders.  Hope that helps if your looking for a very simple way on a wireless network.

  • New workstation - what to keep and what to buy?

    Hi
At last I´m about to buy a whole new workstation. I mainly eidt AVCHD files from my Panasonic HMC 151.
    My 2 year "old" PC is a i7 920 with 12 GB ram and 2 X 1,5 TB harddisks (SATA/3 GB/s). I bought a FX 3800 graphics card to upgrade the PC.
I have thought about just upgrading to fx i7 970, but I have other issues besides from CPU speed. I´m getting tired of slow editting, noisy fans and powersupply, bad playback (hacks and stuttering), mysterious hangs and crashes inside PPro CS5 etc. and do not know if I should just buy a brand new Workstation or maybe try to keep some of the best things from my old PC and put it into the new one?
What I am looking at right now is the following. I guess it will give me a boost in perfromance, be more noiseless because heat is not as big an issue:
    Intel® Core™ i7-2600 4x3,40GHz (Turbo 3.80GHz)
    Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 motherboard
Kingston 16GB DDR3-1333 RAM (maybe 24 GB if possible - might be HyperX and 1600)
    nVidida Quadro 2000
    2 x Seagate 3,5'' 2TB 64mb 7200rpm SATA3 6Gb/s - model number ST32000641AS - in RAID? Which one?
Maybe a Kingston Hyperx 120GB SSD Sata3 (Solid State Disk)  for system? Worth the money - or should I waiut and see if its fast enough allready?
I´m in doubt if I should keep the quadro Pro 2000, use my almost new 1000$ FX3800 and save some money or maybe downgrade the 2000 Pro with e GTX 570 and use the FX 3800 in my old PC as a spare system? I could also downgrade even more to a GTX 550 and then put that card in my old PC and my FX 3800 into the new workstation?
I´m also in doubt wich harddisks to choose - are , wich RAID and if I should use SSD for system or not?
Basicly all I need (and want) is a system with an acceptable noisellevel (> 25-30 db would be nice) and wich is able to give me a smooth and funny videoeditting experience.
Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thx in advance guys!
    Morten

    Hi Scott
Thank you for quick reply ;-)
So you think I should drop my FX 3800 or??? What about the GTX 570? It is not very expensive and is supported by Adobe as i recall it?
Sorry about the RAM confussion - you are right - I did forget I was talking about a new MOBO.
I have thought about the 980, but I think it vwill be to noisy for me - and it is quite expenssive as well. What would be the benefits from choosing the 980 over the i7-2600? I guess the number of cores?
Finally - wich HDD shuold I choose - I´m not to much into RAID - had some very bad experiences with that in the late 90´es and have not yet recovered from the loss ;-(
How would you do if you should make a RAID +0 setup - and think about heat and noise - i think HDDs are noisy - the quicker the noiser - or am I all wrong here?
    Thx again!

  • What's the point in buying a new MacBook?

    Hi all,
Recently I went with my iBook G4 to the Apple store to troubleshoot a small problem, but they were unable to help me as after only 7 years, the machine was rendered obsolete and they didn't feel obliged to help. My iBook recently died and I felt like a part of me was missing.
So my question is, what is the point of buying myself a brand new MacBook Pro if in 5 or 6 years, it will be obsolete? I want a Mac that will last me wherever I go for a long time before it finally dies. I've realized that I need to put PowerPC computers out of the question, but will intel processer Macs last longer than PowerPC processors?
For the record, I don't want to switch to Microsoft as I find them difficult and this isn't a crack at Apple.
    Any answers are very appreciated,
    Thomas.

With Intel based Macs the hardware will not become obsolete as fast as PPC based Macs did, but the operating system and/or applications used might.
That does not mean that it will stop working, just that you won't, in a few years' time, be able to get the latest bells and whistles.
Officially, support from Apple ceases after seven years - but that does not stop the Macs working!
    Vintage and obsolete Apple products:
Obsolete products are those that were discontinued more than seven years ago. Apple has discontinued all hardware service for obsolete products with no exceptions. Service providers cannot order parts for obsolete products. These include ALL G4 and G5 models.

  • What's with the brand new imac's not being able to handle 3 tracks in garage band? This is crap!

I have been so dissapointed by Lion i'm thinking about selling the brand new Imac. No Rosettta?! So i cant use Final Cut express anymore or CS3, and I don't WANT TO UPGRADE> And Even Garage band cannot play more than 3 tracks without saying there are too many? I can work better on my 2008 macbook!!!!

And Even Garage band cannot play more than 3 tracks without saying there are too many?
There must be something wrong. A brand-new iMac should really perform better.
What model did you buy (Processor, how much disk space, how much RAM)? Can it be, that your harddrive is too full with less than 15 GB of free space, or the iMac has not enough RAM? Lion needs a bit more memory than Snow did.

  • So Apple is making it too hard to buy the new iphone, what is the next best

The nearest apple store is about an hour and a half away for me. I'm told that to get a 3G I should show up at the store at around 7:00 a.m.
WHAT? Apple thinks that they can treat longtime customers like this? I am appalled!
I have already waited weeks to let the buzz die down a bit, But this is just nuts.
My Dumb phone is dying, and I will soon buy a new phone, I wanted it to be the new iphone but I don't think that I will risk the gas and time to drive that far with a maybe.
What do you think is the next best choice and why?

The fact that I have spent my money on over a dozen Apple computers over the years sure should matter to them. But no, the other people should get good service also!
I'm a little confused. Why do you think you're getting bad service and being treated badly at all because they recommended you come early to get the phone? The iPhone is a very popular item. A lot of people want it, and the phones are being made quickly and shipped out by the boatload to stores around the world. Apple has started opening their stores at 8am (that's two hours earlier) in order to help with demand, to make sure there is more store time to serve all the customers (is that not good service?).
If the store is a first-come-first-serve situation, then you're being given exactly the same service as all other customers, and it's not bad service. It's just the best they can manage given the huge demand for this product. If you were running the store, what would you do? Ask everyone who called to bring all receipts to show how much they've spent at the store and the ones who spend the most get to come in first and get the iPhones while the rest wait? I mean, it'd be nice if all Apple stores treated everyone like kings: "Hello, sir, there's 500 people in the store buying iPhones, but we STILL have one for you, and a private table over there to fill out all AT&T forms. Would you like someone to wave a peacock fan over your head so you don't get hot? Come right this way...espresso?"
I don't think they have enough employees or room for that. Not to mention iPhones.
Now some stores have allowed customers to reserve phones. You might talk to your store manager, discuss your situation (the long drive) and see if this can be done.
