Confused Between Buying 15" rMBP with Dedicated GPU or Integrated ?

Hi Guys,
I am planning to buy my first ever Retina Macbook Pro 15 Inch.  And I need some suggestions, It is my first ever Mac Book in my life so I am pretty excited and anxious about it. But I am in a dilemma should I go for the Dedicated Graphic Card Model or Should I go for the Integrated Graphic Model. No, It is not for the Extra Storage Space on the SSD that I am contemplating to buy the Dedicated Graphic Card Model but more for the Dedicated Graphic Card.
I am gonna be using this for my Personal Use Heavy Web Surfing, Lots of Flash Video watching, Movies, Music, Occasional Gaming (I am not a Gaming Freak) But I do occasionally like to play some most talked about, popular game so I don’t want my machine to restrain me for any reason. So this is my Requirement.
Now I have heard stories about the Dedicated GPU Model which is not good as in firstly I will tell you what my experience is I used to have a Sony Vaio till sometime back with a NVIDIA Dedicated 128 MB Graphic Card, after using it well for 5 and half years one fine day it failed, and subsequently it also corrupted the Display and wont let the OS Boot up. When I took it to the service guys they said, this is a very common phenomenon that we are coming across with Machine which Have NVIDIA Graphic Cards, apparently they seem to be running some problems NVIDIA doesn’t seem to making it well in terms of longevity. Steer Clear from Machines which use it. So what even if it is the Famous Macbook.
If I am spending this amount of money I am atleast looking for the MAC to be going for till about atleast 6-7 Years. And there is where my apprehension comes in the words of my service guys that Please stay away from NVIDIA Enabled Machine if you can.
I have heard some guys tell me that well, even though modern GPUs run much cooler than before. It's just that there's been a lot of failures with dedicated GPUs in the past and there have been seldom a failure with integrated graphics. If you want your machine to last a long time,  We would recommend the Iris Pro one over the 750M one. You don't need to spend the extra on the 750M model. It's not going to benefit you. For most things, the Iris Pro performs the same as the 750M.
As far as gaming is concerned, one can play any game the 750M can, but may have to lower a couple of settings for some of them. If the DGPU failed, it would do exactly what happened with the Vaio. No reason really to assume that's going to happen but it is very much possible with a DGPU Model. The Iris Pro model is far less likely to fail in that way.
Before Iris Pro, One would have been against Intel graphics as they were too slow. Iris Pro is the first Intel graphics chip to hold up against dedicated GPUs.
It's important to remember that some of the NVidia GPUs from 2008 were defective, mostly the 8600M but some 9600M too. If you have a Retina Macbook Pro with a dedicated GPU, that's more likely to be problematic than Intel's integrated graphics. There have been hardly any issues with integrated graphics chips dying
Dedicated GPUs tend to be more powerful but they've always been less reliable. That's not to say they all fail, they just happen to have a higher rate of failure.
8600M, 9600M, 6970M, 6750M, 6490M, X1900XT, X1600, I think some old 7500 or 9200 too, all had issues.
I've never heard of an integrated graphics failure.
In the near future, Integrated graphics would be a better option for most people. Iris Pro is very close to the 650M/750M.
These are the comments that I have heard so far about the DGPU model Peter ? What do you guys think ? what would you guys advise me ?
Thanks !

Graphically intensive applications such as games. Some applications will turn it on just to improve graphic performance such as iPhoto. Having a dedicated card will have a higher resale value just because it has more hardware and better specs because of the additional card.

  • Nested xserver with dedicated gpu

I'm aware xephyr has render and composting capabilities now, but the only problem is the frame rate isn't too great in it.
I was wondering if it was possible to put a 2nd GPU in my computer which only the nested xserver could use, and if that would actually increase the framerate. If so, does anyone know how I could do this? I assume xorg.conf is what I need to modify but I don't know how to configure it to make the nested xserver use the separate GPU.

Probably already figured out your issue, but maybe this'll help someone else down the line.
Same exact thing was happening with a build of spares I had:
    Pentium g860
    MSI Z77MA-G45 mobo
    Asus 6950 2GB (non-DCII)
    Adata 1600MHz 3x2GB
    Antec 750w PSU
    320GB Barracuda
This started out in a build with a 450w PSU. I know, minimum for the 6950 is 500. I am building to sell. The numbers added up.
My first thought was a power issue since when I installed everything and powered on, it would spin everything up, then reboot. Over and over. Swapped it to the case with the 750, same issue. With onboard graphics, played around in the BIOS for a few days to no avail. The best I could get with a GPU in either slot was no reboot. Still no video, post, bios, beeps, etc.
Swapped the 6950 with an EVGA GTX 470, and same thing. That's about the time I noticed dual monitor setting in bios using GPU and onboard graphics. Played with that for a while and somehow the 470 got video. So now I'm ecstatic. Pop the 6950 in and nothing. Same symptoms as before.
Long story short- fresh windows 7 boot with onboard graphics (graphics card out of course), download driver sweeper and extract to desktop, also downloaded newest 6900 series Radeon drivers and extract to desktop, reboot to safe mode, run driver sweeper. Why is there an intel HD graphics driver? Hmmm. Clean up (remove) any nVidia drivers, plus the intel graphics drivers, reboot to windows, run 6900 driver install (still with no video card in), not very much happens obviously, shut down, pop in the 6950. Do a stupid little dance (in the small area of my "office" that doesn't have random components laying on pieces of cardboard or ESD bags) because I have video from the 6950.
I know old thread, but maybe this could work for others with this problem. I was convinced I had bent socket pins, but wanted to try EVERYTHING I could before RMA.
    Hope it helps someone!
P.S. I swapped back to the Cooler Master 450w PSU, and it's working perfectly.

  • Does the standard Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the 13 inch Macbook pro stand up to other graphics cards with dedicated memory ( 1GB of memory for instance)?

Does the standard Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the 13 inch Macbook pro stand up to other graphics cards with dedicated memory ( 1GB of memory for instance)? I need a laptop for college and the Engineering program suggests a dedicated video card with minimum 1GB of video memory.

I have a Intel HD 4000 in my Mac Mini (late 2012), and it's okay for what I need it.
    However:
    - there were a few issues with flickering on the video output to external monitors. These were solved through a firmware update that came with OSX 10.8.3 - for the majority of the users. There is apparently still a small group of users that still has issues. You can read long threads about this here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4472316?start=0&tstart=0
    and here
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4490924?start=0&tstart=0
So for most of us (me included) this issue is solved, but it seems that certain displays / monitors don't work well with the intel HD4000, don't know if there is a pattern or a list of monitor models...
    - there was an issue with the color calibration on the HDMI output. No matter how much you tried to calibrate, the results remained unsatisfying. All light colors were crushed to white, wrong contrast, ...
You can read about this here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1482487
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4480354?start=0&tstart=0
The same firmware update improved this a little, good enough for me, but I can imagine it's not good enough if you do graphic work and need reliable colors from your monitor. On HDMI output, the thunderbolt/MDP output is fine. So it's mainly a dual monitor setup issue.
If it's for graphic work, I'd go for a Mac Book Pro with dedicated GPU !

  • G575AL with two GPU's only works in safe mode

After about two weeks of solving the many , many problems this laptop came with i am having diffulty fixing the last one, the laptop is G575AL with a dedicated gpu and integrated one.
The culprit is in the gpu driver or settings.
Both the 6310m and 6370m have the same problems - they freeze the computer in any application , even in idle (laptop requires restart after that).
Without the video driver installed the laptop runs ok.
I have tried with the old driver (the cd from lenovo) and the new driver (from lenovo's site) and it's the same problem.
I've tried disabling the ULPS - i disabled every ULPS i could find in the registry except one and it still freezes, will try to disable the last one i missed and will report, though i have almost 0 hope.
The thing i know for certain is that this happens with the driver installed, aside from the 2 drivers i tried there are no more for my gpu';s (generic AMD ones won't install, only lenovo releases)
I am very dissapointed with this laptop and lenovo, i've spent 2 weeks to fix things up (blue screens, conflicting lenovo drivers etc.) after getting it back from service (with the changed HDD and DVD) but still with the same problems present.
Just because it's the essential series does not mean the product i've paid for should not work.
    Thanks in advance.

Is there any other video driver setting besides ULPS i can change?
(and isn't in the amd control center, i already tried those)

An MBA is a portable while an iMac is a desktop and is not portable. You could install Windows on either provided each had sufficient memory installed and a large enough hard drive. The iMac is better equipped for this from the outset, but the MBA can be adequately configured if you are willing to spend the money to do so.

  • Photoshop CC 2014.2.1 not detecting my dedicated GPU

When I open Photoshop, I get the following error message:
"3D features require a minimum of 512MB of vRAM. Photoshop has detected less than that on your system.
Updating the driver of your graphics card may resolve the issue."
I am running a laptop PC with an integrated graphics card (Intel HD4600) and a dedicated Nvidia GTX 675M with 2 GB of vRAM.
I switch between the two adapters with the press of a single button, for power-saving purposes.
I always run at high-performance with the dedicated GPU active when running Photoshop.
I run the latest driver from Nvidia, and in the Nvidia control panel I manually set the preferences for Photoshop to utilize the dedicated GPU. But it still does not detect my main graphics adapter.
I checked the system information in Photoshop and cannot make sense of it. Why would it be unable to detect the GPU when every GPU demanding software I have run so far (a lot) have been able to..
I have checked google and the very forums and found the problem in various forms with no real solution for it so far. Hopefully someone on these forums can help, considering I am paying a monthly fee for the program and the support that comes with it

    Thanks for the quick response!
But as mentioned in my initial post, I deactivate the integrated graphics adapter when using Photoshop, or any software that demands decent graphical processing power.
I only have it activated when in power-saving mode. And of course I update to the newest display drivers via the GeForce Experience or through their website.
Point is, I have never had any problems with any software whatsoever in detecting the proper GPU and utilizing it's power. The only software unable to register my dedicated video card is Photoshop.

  • How to make a Mac use dedicated GPU in Windows

So I have this problem: when I launch games through Boot Camp on my late 2013 15 rmbp, I occasionally run into lags and frame drops in various games. The thing is, sometimes the same games run perfectly smooth with a decent frame rate, and sometimes the lags are so bad that it's almost impossible to play.
This makes me think that my Macbook is using the integrated Iris Pro gpu instead of dedicated 750m. So my question is, how can I force Windows to use dedicated graphics in games? In NVidia control panel, there's no option like Dynamic swithing.
P.S. I just reinstalled Boot Camp drivers using the WININSTALL drive, and checked NVidia website for updates

Furthermore, Boot Camp only uses the dedicated GPU because of problems related to GPU switching, so this is not the problem. Anyway, you can check which GPU Windows is using > http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/video-cards-faq#1TC=windows-7
Have you checked if there is any app open while you are playing games and they do not run as smooth as you want to?

  • Is it possible to disable the dedicated GPU on Satellite L850

Is it possible to disable the dedicated GPU on the L850.
Through the BIOS or whatever, so that the laptop only runs on the integrated graphics on the CPU.
    Thanks

    Hi
What L850-xxx do you have exactly and what dedicated GPU does it support?
Notebooks which support an Optimus technology (with nVidia GPU) would switch automatically between the internal (Intel) GPU and the external nVidia GPU and this depends on running application.
In some case you could choose weather an application has to use internal Intel GPU or NVidia GPU.

  • Is it worthy to buy a Zen with 2Gb and a SD card of 4 or is it better to buy a Zen with 4

    Hi.
I'm thinking on buying a Zen, but i'm a bit confused on the issue of if is it better to buy a Zen with 4Gb or a Zen with 2Gb and a SD card with 4Gb, because the diference on the pricefrom the 2Gb to the 4Gb fits a SD card with 4Gb, and will result in a Zen with 6Gb...
Does the zen works fine with the reading times of the SD cards? Or does the performance drops when reading from the card?
I would apreciate your experience/knowing opinions.

You can either buy a CS6 perpetual license, or Creative Cloud subscription.  Both will run on the two computers you mention.  You are allowed two installation with either version, but they must be for the same user. There is a cheap as chips Photography deal that gives you Photoshop and Lightroom for just $10/month, and feature gap is ever widening between CS6 and CC
