Confused ipod newbie seeks assistance

Hi folks,
Like the subject says, I'm a serious Ipod newbie, and I've probably started in a really bad way. Briefly, I have inherited an Ipod which I believe to be a 20GB Docking Version. It runs Software v2.3. It is, I think, a bit poorly, and I wish to carry out a Restore and either upgrade the software or reinstall if it's the latest version (which I cannot discover from the Ipod site). I know what this means, as compared to Update etc. I'm very IT-literate, BTW, so tech-speak is OK.
My PC runs Win2K SP4. I have Itunes v6.0.5.20 installed. The Ipod is recognised in Itunes.
The instructions I have read for an Restore include "you will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows". I do not see a Summary tab anywhere. I can find no tab, button, command, tick box or anything that might allow me to carry out a Restore.
I assumed that I needed a newer version of Itunes, but v7 appears to be XP/Vista only. The Ipod Updater appears to be for a lower version of software than 2.3, so I am not keen to use it.
So what do I do? Why can I not see a Restore button or option in Itunes 6? How do I Restore/Update/Reinstall a 20Gb Docking Model?
I've spend many years without an Ipod - I'm beginning to think that a few more might be a good idea. Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance...

You don't see the Summary tab or option to restore in iTunes 6 because this functionality doesn't exist in that version. When iTunes 7 was introduced the preference tabs were redesigned which brought in the Summary and associated tabs and the iPod updater was integrated into it's functionality. With iTunes 6 and earlier the iPod was updated or restored using a standalone updater utility, each time the iPod software was updated a new version of the updater was released. Since iTunes 7 was released there are no longer any standalone updaters that deliver the most up to date software. There are versions of iTunes 7 earlier than 7.4 that work with Windows 2000. You'll get a variety of earlier versions of iTunes at these links:

  • Big, confusing iPod Shuffle Problem

    Okay, this is a confusing one, so read it carefully to understand it fully
    The iPod shuffle in question is my ladyfriend's, bought in October 2005, and has never caused us a bit of trouble. Until last night.
    Last night I downloaded and ran the new iPod Shuffle fix that Apple distributed (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303979) The iPod never had trouble in the past, but I wanted to keep up with the updates so that it stayed that way, and ran it.
    After it had finished running and reset, the iPod dissapeared from the finder. I thought "great, all done and dusted." When I tried to plug it in again and add music, I went through the "what is it called" tabs etc. which come up when you first use a shuffle. It was on the Finder, in iTunes, all was well.
    I noticed that after a few seconds, the iPod dissapeared from the Finder. Stayed in iTunes, but had seemingly vanished from everywhere else. This is interesting, as it's one of the things that the fix is supposed to solve in the first place!
    This is my problem. The iPod vanishes when something tries to use it. If I enable 'disk use' on the device, it appears. Turn it off, vanishes again. The iPod vanishing tricks have given me some error:1418's, which were fixed to many on a website dedicated to the 1418 error who used the fix. Even running older updaters doesn't fix these problems.
    I'd like to have this iPod stop dissapearing when I open programs such as iTunes, and have it work properly again.
    If anyone can contribute anything to this, I'd be very appreciative.
    Cheers everyone.

  • Newbie seeks advice on importing to iMovie from JVC Everio

    Hi there,
    While I'm an old hand at the Mac - I really have little experience of AV applications and cams. I am very interested in buying a JVC Everio GZ-MC 500 or MC 200 Digital Media Camera, but just found out that I cannot import movie outputs into iMovie. Since MicroDrive technology seems like the way of the future I'd like to stick to the JVC. Is there any work around to this problem?
    I have iLife 05 with iMovie HD installed and have just downloaded QT7 with Pro upgrade on the way. Does the MPEG 2 component solve this situation?
    Any assistance to this would be a great help.
    Thanks and regards,
    Des

    My experience with microdrives (..incidentally, Clive Sinclair used the name 'Microdrive' for the tape storage devices he sold for his original 1980s home computers ..about 20 feet of videotape wound into an endless loop in a teeny plastic housing, rather like a miniature 8-track cartridge ..they were also used in the ancient British ICL 'One-Per-Desk' under licence from Sinclair: those two slots along the top are microdrive slots.. Oops ..sorry; where was I..?) ..is that they're unreliable. CF cards are better. But how much video can you store on a CF card, and at what price?
    Microdrives need a moment to run up to speed, and constantly starting and stopping them - as I've done with, for instance, a Sony F828 stills camera - I find that the drive gets confused about whether it should be saving or accessing ..and just stops working. Same thing has happened to me with a microdrive in various other devices. So I don't trust them any more. I've used various sizes (340Mb, 1Gb, 2.2Gb) and I always cross my fingers: some have stopped working completely; others have had to be reformatted as DOS, and then formatted as Mac HFS+ ..and I've found them to be more trouble than they promise to be worth. Imagine suddenly losing all your video after you'd just shot about 46 minutes' worth.. Weddings? Argghh! The bride and groom would be so disappointed ..and so would you!
    There are various programs which will read MPEG-2 footage (..including the audio: iMovie will play the video 'natively', but often without the sound..) such as Streamclip. That'll convert MPEG footage into proper QuickTime, which iMovie can handle. So you could connect your microdrive(s) to your Mac, copy the footage, squirt it through Streamclip, then edit it.
    However, be aware that the quality of the footage may not be as high as material recorded with proper miniDV (or Digital-8) tapes because of the nature of the Everio's recording/compressing/storing routine. The specification - on that page mentioned by 'L', above - shows that the Everios record in the same format as DV "NTSC (720x480) 4:2:0 PAL (720x576) 4:2:0" but - not having tried one - I dunno if the final appearance ..once the video's been 'unscrambled' from MPEG-2 format into something iMovie compatible, then saved back to tape or hard disc.. is as good as DV. It might be even better [..HDV hi-def is saved as MPEG-2..] but I couldn't say.
    But DO be careful about microdrives ..ask a few Everio owners before putting down your money and buying one. And how does the price of a microdrive compare with a 60 minute miniDV tape?
    Oh, by the way, I almost forgot: welcome to iMovie Discussions!

  • Newb deserving assistance with Adobe Javascript (check boxes and combo boxes)

    Hi, I'm a newb when it comes to javascript (using adobe acrobat pro 6.0).
    I am working on a form that will allow me to autofill checkboxes based off of information chosen. Ideally, I would like to have a selection from a combo box autofill/auto checkmark check boxes. Alternatively, I would be willing to just have different selections presented with check boxes that when filled, would auto checkmark other check boxes (I know how to do this one, but I am not sure how to clear the check boxes if the initial one is unchecked).
    I have the action button tied to the mouse up function. This just errors out.
    var Citrix = this.getField("Citrix")
    var Appro = this.getField("Appro")
    var SAS = this.getField("SAS")
    if (event.target.value=="Yes") {
    Citrix.checkThisBox = true
    Appro.checkThisBox = true
    SAS.checkThisBox = true
    else {
    Citrix.checkThisBox = false
    Appro.checkThisBox = false
    SAS.checkThisBox = false
    I have this that works, but I don't know how to clear the buttons when "Associate" is unchecked.
    if(this.getField("Associate").isBoxChecked(0));
    this.getField("Citrix").checkThisBox(0, true);
    this.getField("Appro").checkThisBox(0, true);
    this.getField("SAS").checkThisBox(0, true);
    The other way I was working on it, was to use a combo box to autofill/checkmark check boxes. But this code doesn't work either.
    function calculateTextField()
    // get the value of the combo box
    var comboValue = this.getField("Select").value;
    // get the state of the checkbox
    var isChecked = (this.getField("Citrix").value == "Yes");
    var textFieldValue = "";
    console.println(comboValue);
    if (isChecked)
    if (comboValue == 0)
    textFieldValue = "";
    if (comboValue == "Associate")
    (this.getField("Citrix").value == "Yes");
    else if (comboValue == "Specialist")
    (this.getField("Citrix").value == "Yes");
    else if (comboValue == "Team Leader")
    (this.getField("Citrix").value == "No");
    else
    (this.getField("Citrix").value == "No");
    else
    textFieldValue = "";
    this.getField("Select").value = textFieldValue;
    Can anyone please assist me with this?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Gene,
    Thank you for the response. Are you saying that my initial formula should look more like this; ?
    var Citrix = this.getField("Citrix")
    var Appro = this.getField("Appro")
    var SAS = this.getField("SAS")
    if (event.target.value=="Yes") {
    Citrix.checkThisBox = true
    Appro.checkThisBox = true
    SAS.checkThisBox = true
    else {
    if (event.target.value=="Off")
    Citrix.checkThisBox = true
    Appro.checkThisBox = true
    SAS.checkThisBox = true
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Three different albums with the same name is confusing iPod?

    I have three albums which go by the name Greatest Hits. There are three artists on my iPod who both have an album called this. If I am listening to Artist #1 and I switch to Cover Flow, then the album artwork for that album will appear, however the name of Arist #2 or Artist #3 will appear underneath with the song and album title of Artist #1.
    Similarly, I searched through the albums to find the Greatest Hits album and it automatically assigned the artwork of Artist #2 to it, but the song by Artist #1 was listed in there along with the songs from Artist #2 and Artist #3.
    I hope that all makes sense. I was wondering if this is a bug or simply iTunes/iPod becoming confused and merging the albums together because it thinks it is the same album even though there are different artists.
    If this isn't a bug, does anyone know a way I can resolve this issue?
    Thanks.

    1) Select (in iTunes) one album at a time.
    2) Get info on all the songs an make sure the Artist name is the same - and unique from the other two albums.
    3) Change as needed.
    4) Do the same for all albums.
    5) Make sure the artwork is correct for each album.
    6) Sync Touch.

  • Confusing Ipod Issue, buttons won't work

    I have a 5th gen 30 gig ipod video. Recently (meaning just a few days ago) my ipod died a little. I know that it still has battery power, because I am able to hook it onto the computer and see it charge and connect.
    My problem is this: The buttons don't work. The only thing on my ipod that's working is my hold slide. Apart from that, the buttons do not work AT ALL. I've been trying to reset it, but i can hold the menu and center button for a whole minute and it will not work at all. the clicker wheel does absolutely nothing, as does the other buttons. The ipod is working, as far as i can tell, just not the buttons. I'm honestly confused as to what i can do. Anybody out there that can help me?

  • Seeking assistance with replicating sound effect.

    Greetings one and all. I´m just a newbie looking for some help
    As the title suggests. I would like assistance in replicating the sound effect(s) used in the following video in adobe audition : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iexlGj4Lvg
    I´ve tried effects such as chorus, flanger, phaser, reverb and that makes it sound better but it just lacks a certain ooomph that I just can´t put my finger on. Now after much head scratching and frustration I turn to you guys.
    Thanks in advance.

    Ah, so delay was the magic tool. certainly when I play around with it I can see the theory behind the sound effect. Whenever I use the delay I noticed I cannot adjust the feedback on it. I can however raise the feedback if I use the analog delay but then it sounds different. Any tips  to make the the delay short and very strong like in the video? Perhaps using distortion to make the sound more powerful. Do you think the chorus effect is involved?

  • Questions from an iPod Newbie

    I just got my 5.5 Gen 80 Gig iPod today... I was really thrilled to get my hands on it and load it full of music and whatnot... I turned on the iPod and tried to set the clock to local time - but I didn't really see how to do that. I decided to go ahead and plug the iPod into the PC and load some music, and fiddle with the clock later...
    I'm running on Windows XP, and I was very relieved to see the iPod recognized immediately by the PC. The iPod starting blinking "Do not disconnect" immediately... it appears to be charging despite having a full charge out of the box.
    The 'Setup Assistant' never opened, nor did iTunes (7.0.0.7.0)... so I'm sitting here wondering what to do... the little booklet that came with the iPod says to try plugging it into a different USB port, but the iPod is saying not to disconnect.
    Any help would be much appreciated -

    i am sorry to jump in on your question, yes i too have exactly the same problem, i click the eject button all that happens is the disc drawer opens, last night i just went for it, unplugged my ipod only cos it was attached to my laptop, today i have installed it to my main pc and i have the same problem.
    well i am going to sit today until i have sorted it or thrown it out the window..lol
    Your clicking the wrong eject button. you need the arrow right next to your ipod icon, not the one in the bottom right corner of the screen
