Confused on how Airport Express works.

Hello,
I have a PC connected to a Dlink router (ethernet). The router is wireless enabled also. I have itunes installed on the PC. I want to stream from itunes to my stereo. I purchased the airport express thinking I'd plug into outlet near my stereo, the airport would join the network via my router and I'd be on my way. But when I run the assistant software from my PC it talks about my PC not being able to administer the express. Do I need a wireless card in my PC? Thanks

The AirPort Setup Assistant requires a wireless connection to the AirPort Express Base Station (AX). Try using the AirPort Admin Utility instead of the Assistant.
To set up AirTunes on the AX, temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
AirPort tab
- Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
- Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
- Wireless Network: <select the existing DLink wireless network>
Music tab
- Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
- Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
- iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
- iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
In iTunes:
iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
- Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Very basic questions about how Airport Express works

I'm using a non-Apple wireless router at home. I'd like to stream music from my iBook to my stereo. Will an Airport Express do that? Will it get confused that there's another access point? Can my iBook receive streaming radio via the non-Apple wireless router and send it to Airport Express?
Alternatively: can I simply replace my non-Aple wireless router with an Airport Express? Will an Airport Express work as a wireless router? Will it to DHCP and NAT so that multiple computers can connect to the Internet through it?
    Thanks.

    Yes
Will it get confused that there's another access point?
You would simply configure the AirPort Express (AX) to join your current wireless network.
Can my iBook receive streaming radio via the non-Apple wireless router and send it to Airport Express?
To stream non-iTunes items you will need to use Airfoil.
Alternatively: can I simply replace my non-Aple wireless router with an Airport Express?
Yes as long as you don't have any devices connected to that router via Ethernet.
Will it to DHCP and NAT so that multiple computers can connect to the Internet through it?
    Yes it is a router.

Hi guys, recently had the same issue. You require an older version of Airport Utility to configure the older Airport Express. It can be found here.

  • Airport Express works, but MacBook doesn't when connected directly to Modem

I have an interesting problem. I have Verizon DSL. Airport Express works, but Linksys and Netgear wifi routers don't work. Further more, if I disconnect the wifi router and directly connect a MacBook or a Windows notebook they don't work. These devices work if I enter a static IP address though. It is DHCP that doesn't work.
I have been using Verizon DSL for several years, and most recently I was using a Netgear wifi router. A few days ago it lost internet connection. Thinking that the Netgear broke, I bought a new Linksys WRT54GL to replace it. But it didn't work either. I happened to have an Airport Express lying around, so I connected that and surprisingly it worked! Then I wrote down the IP address shown by Airport Utility and typed that IP into Netgear as a static IP address and it worked too. If I remove all wifi equipment and connect a Windows PC or a MacBook directly to the DSL modem then neither works. (Note: my DSL modem doesn't use PPPoE it uses DHCP.)
So it seems that something changed with Verizon's DHCP such that only Airport Express can work. Contacting Verizon support was useless. What is so magical about Airport Express? I can't use Airport Express permanently because I have 3 wired computers to connect also, and Airport Express have ethernet ports. Airport Extreme does, so I am wondering if I should get one of those. Will the magic of Airport Express work in Extreme also?
Does anyone know what is going on? How is Airport Express work with Verizon DHCP when nothing else can?

Hello petilon. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Does anyone know what is going on? How is Airport Express work with Verizon DHCP when nothing else can?
It sounds like Verizon is keying on the MAC address of the device connected to its modem ... so either they require that you register a MAC address with them or there is a problem with the modem in that it is retaining it even though you change the device connected.
If you haven't already, be sure to perform a complete power recycle when changing out network equipment. The following should be done each time:
o Power-down, the modem, router, and computer(s); wait at least 10-15 minutes. Order is not critical. If the modem has a backup battery, it should be removed and replaced to make sure that any stored configuration information is erased.
o Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-up the router; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    o Power-up the computer(s).

  • Does Airport Express work with Airport Base Station (not Airport Extreme)?

I'm needing to extend the range of my Airport base station. I purchased an Airport Extreme to funcion as a repeater, but it's not working. Will Airport Express work with a (white) Airport base station. If not, how can I extend the range besides moving the base station?

Can someone actually tell me how to set-up the Airport Express (with my Airport) so that it will act like a repeater. Once again, this is an Airport and not an Airport Extreme.

  • The network on my airport express works, have wifi on the ipods, etc. But when I open airport utility on my mac and on the iphone nothing exists. Why?

The network on my airport express works, have wifi on the ipods, etc. But when I open airport utility on my mac and on the iphone nothing exists. Why?

Reboot the modem. Just pull the power for a few seconds. No settings are lost.  The laptop getting through to the internet is not relevent.

  • Airport express working on mac but not on pc

My airport express works wonderfully on my Macbook Pro, but I would also like my PC to connect to the same network. I have tried everything that I have found online, and the PC will not recognize or "find" the airport network. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Ok, thanks for the additional info.
    I suggest trying the following:
o Temporarily disable the WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless encryption, and then, check to see if any of the XP devices can now access the network/Internet?
o If they can't then, while the encryption is still disabled, change the radio mode on the AX to a non-"n" one, like "802.11g only." You can access this mode, by holding down the <Option> (Mac) or <Control> (PC) key prior to selecting the mode within the AirPort Utility. Can they access the network/Internet now?

  • Does airport express work with garage band in lion?

Actually I know it can work and there are apps out there to make it work but I heard a rumor that Apple was going to allow functionaliy between the two in Lion. So my question is...
Will Airport Express work with Garage Band in Lion or do I have to buy third party software?

I believe the HP 2840 can be connected either via Ethernet or USB. If connected to the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) by USB, only the basic printing functions will be shared out; the scanning, faxing, copying features are not supported.
If the AX is configured so that its Ethernet port is enabled, the it may be possible to gain all of the printer's features by connecting it to the AX by Ethernet. In this case, the printer will use its own Print server to share out all of these features.

  • Does Airport express work with Mac os X.2.8?

    G3 with 10.2 and airport 3.1
Airport express working properly with my ImacG5 and the Ibook G4 of my friend os 10.4 in 802.11b/g mode and WEP 128 bits.
But my Ibook G3 still not detecting my network.
I'm sure the airport card is ok, because I managed to use a local network with an other Ibook.
    Thank you for help.

Yes you should be able to access the wireless network created by the AirPort Express regardless of which version of the Mac OS you are using.

  • Airport Express Works Everywhere Except One Place

I have several rooms in my house with their own stereos, and my new Airport Express works on all of them. However, I have one stereo outside, in the garage and the Airport Express does not work out there. I assume that the wireless signal doesn't reach there. Is there a way to boost the wireless signal? The garage stereo is probably about 50 feet from the wireless modem, which is in the basement of my house. This is probably a dumb question, but I don't know anything!

Soonerfunk, Welcome to the discussion area!
If the wireless signal were created by an AirPort Express (AX), an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS), or a Time Capsule it would be possible. However it is not possible when the wireless network is created by a wireless modem.

  • Does The Airport Express Work with Any Router?

    Hi Forum,
i have an old Linksys router G Wifi speeds, does the Airport Express work with this?

The AirPort Express or other Apple routers will not wirelessly extend the signal from your Linksys router, if that is what you are asking here.
If yes, use another Linksys product to insure compatibility between devices.

Is this an older "round" version of the AirPort Extreme? If yes, it is true that AirPort Utility 6.x no longer supports the older AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express models.
A model number......located on the bottom of the Extreme or on the side of the Express would be helpful to confirm what you have.
Apple probably does want you to buy a new AirPort Extreme.
The workaround might be to use a Mac or PC running a 5.x version of AirPort Utility.
A more complicated workaround would be to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on Mountain Lion.  This is not supported by Apple......it does work for me.....but may not work for you. See this article for more details:

  • Airport express worked fine now shows only constant amber light ?

airport express worked fine now shows only constant amber light ?

A solid amber light indicates that the AirPort Express cannot get out of startup mode.....likely because of a power supply issue within the device.
Try a Factory Default Reset as a last resort to see if that might help. To do this....
Power off the AirPort Express and wait a minute or two
Hold in the reset button on the Express first, and keep holding it for 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back into power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart
At this point, if the Express is operating correctly, the amber light will be blinking slowly and you can reconfigure the Express again.
If the amber light remains solid after a few reset attempts, the internal power supply on the Express is faulty and the device will need to be replaced.

  • HT4145 why won't my old airport express work?

why won't my old airport express work?

Not sure what you mean by "won't work".
    Won't turn on at all?
    Won't allow configuration changes?
What are you trying to do with the AirPort Express?
If you could provide the Model No of the old Express.....look on the side of the Express for this.....it will be something like "A x x x x"
    and
If you could provide the version of AirPort Utility that you are using.....open AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Utility menu in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About AirPort Utility to locate the version number
    We can probably help
