Confused. So a new mac came out? what exactly is the migration about?

Ok so I havent been to the apple site in forever and I c that they came out with a new mac, so do the old ones need any updates or new parts?? Im confused. What is the whole migration about? I havent done anything to my macpro since I bought it last christmas.

Hey Amanda, and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Great to see another Okie in here...
What exactly are you refereeing to when you say "What is the migration about"?
The prev responses are correct in the fact that you don't need any new parts for your Mac. Occasionally about every six months Apple as other manufactures will release a great new product that will make people water at the mouth forcing them to give in to the over powering urge to spend money, that's what they're all about... making money. Your Mac-Pro or (you probably meant Macbook Pro) will last you many years with the OS and hardware it has, but as tjk said you need to perform the Apple Software updates from time to time (the Mac is defaulted to update automatically) to ensure you have the latest and greatest software for the OS you are running.

  • What exactly does the migration assistant to?

I'm thinking of upgrading to a faster Mac, I'm tired of the slowness of a Core 2 Duo... when I get my new one, what is everything the migration assistant will do? Does it transfer all my apps and their product keys over? Or do I have to reinstall stuff? Do all my settings stay the same (dock, network, etc.)? What gets transferred, and what doesn't? And once the transfer is done, will my old Mac stay the same, or go back to default settings, or what?

Migration Assistant has several options that interact to produce different results depending on how you combine them. For instance, if you choose to transfer apps but not user accounts, then obviously user account settings don't get transferred. Conversely, if you opt to transfer users but not apps, user-specific application settings in the user domain will be transferred but won't do anything.
You also have options to transfer all or only some user accounts & to transfer all or only selected folders in their home folders. Transferring apps is an all or nothing process -- you cannot pick & choose which apps get transferred like you can with users. However, Migration Assistant will not overwrite newer versions of applications with older ones. Similarly, network & system settings will be transferred only if applicable to the new Mac.
Even if you opt to transfer everything possible, a few apps may require reinstallation or reregistration if they include certain types of anti-piracy technology.
IOW, there is no simple answer; however, Migration Assistant is usually able to sort out what you want quite well from the options you choose.
And once the transfer is done, will my old Mac stay the same, or go back to default settings, or what?
    Your old Mac is unaffected.

  • This problem showed up last year spent 2 months with apple senior supervisor for tech support no solution. When the "new" itunes came out problem fixed its self. Just did an update last week or so and back to the problem. In "get info" missing all rt side

Last year upon an update some of my itunes media was not working. Then the new version came out and it fixed itself.
Well another update and we start over with the problem. In the itunes store you can not preview any tv show, music video, or movie.
In your itunes library none of the purchased movies, tv shows, or music videos play. The element the same is in the get info tab. The information in the right side pane in the middle is gone. The left side information is still present. The right side info is the purchase info. Even an item downloaded today had the missing info and will not play. After dealing with apple support with the first go around last year. I uninstalled and reinstalled itunes 8 or more times, in the proper order. I deleted my itunes library and reinstalled it. We deleted all types of program files and program data. nothing worked. I was trying things on my own and foung nothing. Please help I am so frustrated with this. It seems to be a codec error that I can not solve.

  • I am confused about Icloud. I have a 5 year old Macbook, a 2 year old macbook and a 5 year old mac mini. What exactly do I need to do to get all this connected via Icloud. I also have an Iphone 3G. Help please!

I am confused about Icloud. I have a 5 year old Macbook, a 2 year old macbook and a 5 year old mac mini. What exactly do I need to do to get all this connected via Icloud. I also have an Iphone 3G. Help please! Also, I still don't understand exactly what the benefits are. At the moment it seems a lot of hassle to change a system that's been working perfectly well and that I'm very happy with. I'm not at all sure whether the mac mini (1.66 GHz INtel Core Duo) can be brought up to the relevant spec to run ICloud.  Any thoughts?

There are two aspects to iCloud.  One is simply getting an account, or migrating a mobileme account to iCloud.  The second part is using the various features of iCloud to sync contacts, calendars, use music match or photo sharing, and store iWorks documents.
First to get an iCloud account:
If you have a mobileme account, you can migrate by simply logging onto www.icloud.com (ignore any references to Lion and just click through to complete the migration).  If you have OS X Lion or an iOS 5 mobile device, you can create an iCloud account on that device using any valid AppleID.
Once you have an account, you can use JUST the mail account if you wishi - it is a standard IMAP account so you would set it up like any other IMAP email account you have, in whatever client program you use to read email.
To use the OTHER feautes of iCloud, your computers will have to be running OS X Lion (10.7).  Your iPhone 3G will never be able to use iCloud as it cannot run iOS 5 (you need a min. of an iPhone 3GS to run iOS 5).
The requirements for OS X Lion are here - http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html  You need a min. of a Core 2 duo processor so you mini is not capable of running Lion.
So, in your case, the single reasons for iCloud would be if you have a mobileme account, then use the online www.icloud.com to migrate your account so you do not lose your @me.com email address.  You can use iCloud email (without using any other iCloud features) by setting it up as IMAP mail with these settings - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864
If you want an iCloud account and do NOT already have a mobileme account, you will need to upgrade one machine at least to Lion in order to be able to create an iCloud account.

  • I've just bought a new mac and I want to transfer the content from my old Macbook to my new. If I have iCloud enabled on both devices, is this simple, or is there a limit to what I can transfer? For example, can I upload word files to iCloud?

iCloud is not the way to do this. You should use Migration Assistant - with this you can transfer your complete User folder from the old Mac including preferences and logins. You will need to connect the two with FireWire or USB depending on the models.
Ideally you should do this before you set up the new Mac - if you create a user account with the same name than the Migration will have to give the migrated user folder a different name. When you first switch on the new Mac it should ask you if you want to transfer your data, and give you instructions.

I'm not sure about a restocking fee, but heard of people returning items for a new or differant one. they said they held your original payment as a credir toward your new order.. I'd just call them and ask.  good luck.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • How do I find out what is in the cloud so I can delete it?

This is a complete outrage.  All I did was support Apple and was told to sign in to cloud and now I am told I am using too much space.  No idea what this is about and no way to call because I cannot talk.  How do I find out what is in the cloud so I can delete it?   Is this e-mail, Word documents, or something else?  What the heck are they talking about?

It's everything that's stored in icloud: email, backups, calendars, contacts, app data (including iwork documents), .... on and on.
If you need to delete some data to recover some free storage...
You'd have to go into the various apps on a device that is also stored on iCloud and begin trimming files.
    Backups:
Go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backups>Manage Storage; there, tap the device you need info on and the resulting screen lists Backup Options with which apps store data on iCloud.  Turn off camera roll and any other apps that might have a lot of data.  Then delete the backup.  That will free up space.  Photos should be regularly synced to a computer (like you store photos from a digital camera) using either USB via iTunes (on a mac use iPhoto or Aperture to move them to an album) or using photo stream. Go to Settings>iCloud and turn
    Emails:
Regarding emails, on the computer, move emails from mailboxes in icloud to those on the device.  That can also save a lot of space.
    Go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backups>Manage Storage
From there you can find how much and which files are in a backup, and how much different apps use to store data files.  At the bottom of the screen is the size of the mail storage.

  • HT201250 I have done my back up using time machine, now I have a new mac and I need to access the files that I had saved from my old mac. How can I do that?

I have done my back up using time machine, now I have a new mac and I need to access the files that I had saved from my old mac. How can I do that?

Use Migration Assistant on your new Mac:
    Click Continue:
On the next screen, choose your Time Machine backup disk.
Don't bother to migrate Applications unless you know they will work on your new Mac. For example, PowerPC applications won't work. Just migrate your user account which will copy all your photos, music, movies, and other documents.
Note: you will not be able to migrate the information to same account in which you are already logged in. Migration Assistant will tell you that and recommend what to do. It can migrate the information to a new account, but you will have to give it a name you might want to change later. One way around this is to create a temporary account, log in to it, and run Migration Assistant which will replace your normal account. Then, log out of the temporary account, log in to your usual one, verify everyting works as you expect, and delete the temporary one.
All this can be avoided when you set up a brand new Mac by running Setup Assistant which essentially does the same thing to create your new account, but most people are too excited to do that and elect to migrate later.

  • I work on dual screens on a new mac pro but when I do the 4 finger swipe it moves both screens, is there a way to move just the screen that is active?

I work on dual screens on a new mac pro but when I do the 4 finger swipe it moves both screens, is there a way to move just the screen that is active?

Multiple desktops and dual screens really aren't meant to work together. Apple came up with this multiple desltops feature and never really thought about users that use a dual monitor setup. So use either multiple desktops OR dual monitors but not both. Also don't try to use any App in Full Screen Mode as that doesn't work with dual screen setups either.

  • I have aperture 3.2.4 on my laptop and have the serial number, but just bought a new MAC and I can't get the Ver 3.0 link to work. Anyone know how to move it from my laptop to our new mac?

I have aperture 3.2.4 on my laptop and have the serial number, but just bought a new MAC and I can't get the Ver 3.0 link to work. Anyone know how to move it from my laptop to our new mac?

I am talking about the Ver 3 download link that came with the purchase email.
That link is no longer available. Use "Migration Assistant" to copy your Applications from your old mac to the new Mac, then immediately run software update. Aperture Version 3.2 will not run on your new mac with Mavericks, you will have to Upgrade to version 3.4.5 at least - you can download this update from the Support page: Aperture 3.4.5
Then launch Aperture and enter your registration key and try now too update from version 3.4.5 to 3.5 from the AppStore. The AppStore will change your Aperture registration to an AppStore version, so you will able to reinstall by downloading from the AppSTore in future.
If you want transfer only Aperture and no other applications, do it manually: You will have to copy not only the application but folders from the libraries as well:
    /Applications/Aperture.app
    /Library/Application Support/Aperture/
    ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/
