Confused which mobo to buy OC beginner

Im about to replace my old i7 950 to the new i7 4770k haswell processor because of performance and power consumption.
I'd like to pair it with a 32GB ram and Overclock my 4770k up to 4.2ghz only or higher if its still possible on non airconditioned 20 sqm room.
I have a 256gb Crucial m4 SSD, 3 x 3TB red WD HDD connected on DROBO 5. And just now i bought this monster GTX 780 TI.
I am really confused on which board to buy. Features i'd like it to have are listed below
1) WIFI bluetooth built in
2) any LAN booster (if exists)
3) I have no plan on SLI so board with a lot of extra pci-e slots are just a waste.
4) i'd like it to have a thunderbolt (as what i understand its much faster than usb3) but still im fine with my USB3 thats what i use on DROBO but if thunderbolt is faster then its a must.
5) of course USB 3's loads of it
6) PCI 3.0 since i have gtx 780
7) can do overclocking easily
8) i like this SSD Secure Erase idea from asus maximus boards (i hope its not a gimmick)
9) this too ROG RAMDisk if its true
10) Sata 6/gbps
I will be using this rig on a video / photo editing.
here are my choices: (please suggest any other better if you know one)
MSI z87 xpower
MAXIMUS VI FORMULA
MAXIMUS VI hero
sabertooth z87
GA-Z87X-UD7 TH
GA-Z87X-OC Force
Thanks in advance guys i really hate those shiny marketing gimicks that have no use in real life and just adds extra bucks on its product..

Wow, my reply may be long, but I have a lot to say regarding your current plans! Trust me, I'm trying to help you and you do appear to be a bit off track.
First, if you want more speed for Adobe Premiere Pro you need a MUCH better balance of all the components (cpu, ram, gpu, drives, interfaces, drivers, etc.). There are some slight exceptions, but when you have some components that are much faster than others you don't get excellent results and can waste a lot of money. Running 3 potentially fast drives through a DROBO 5 NIC connection is indeed a weak link.
Here's a well written link for "Balanced Systems"
http://ppbm7.com/index.php/tweakers-page/83-balanced-systems/94-balanced-systems
I don't know what you budget is, but if you can spend more than what you target above, get the following items and you would be sooooo set for awhile:
- Asus Rampage IV Black Edition (separate ROG speed control is totally cool - you can run for normal, quiet, power-eff., or turn up the juice for some serious OC'ing for big renders, etc.)
- i7-4930k; yes this is hundreds of dollars more that the 4-core, but has about 50% more speed for the big work.
- 32GB 1600MHz RAM or 64GB if you have After Effects in your plans
- put your 3 WD reds on a RAID 0 array to the SATA connections on your motherboard (use Intel ports, not Marvel for this)
- bet a large drive or two to load in your DROBO for backups
- don't waste your time with any RAMDISK, SSD caching, or other thing that advertise to help speed up PCs; they likely help certain programs, but not Premiere Pro (it is already using LOTs of your resources and having extra RAM (32GB or 64GB does this) is used by Win7/8/8.1 for drive caching already
And if your budget can't swing all of that:
- get 24GB of RAM for your current motherboard
- (optional) replace the 950 with a 6-core (i7-970, i7-980x, or i7-990x)
- overclock to 3.9 (that's pretty easy to do) whether you stick with the 950 or move up
- put your 3 WD reds on a RAID 0 array to the SATA connections on your motherboard (use Intel ports, not Marvel for this)
- get a large drive or two to load in your DROBO for backups
- don't waste your time with any RAMDISK, SSD caching, or other thing that advertise to help speed up PCs; they likely help certain programs, but not Premiere Pro (it is already using LOTs of your resources and having extra RAM (32GB or 64GB does this) is used by Win7/8/8.1 for drive caching already
BTW, my current main rig is a x58 build w/ OC'd i7-970 6-core, GTX 480, 24GB RAM, and LOTs of drives. It really works quite well for HD and even light RED 4k work. I've also experimented with a Dell dual Xeon e5-2687w with 64GB RAM, dual GTX Titan Superclocked GPUs, boot SSD drive and an Areca 8x drive hardware RAID, so I think that I have an excellent feel for what you can get with well built x58 system and also what you can expect for close to state-of-the-art today.
Also BTW, if I had to replace my 6-core x58 system today, I would go with the Asus Rampage IV Black Edition and i7-4930k myself.

Jim

  • X24400 - Which mobo for OC ? K8N Diamond plus or K8N Neo4 Platinum ?

    Hi all,
Soon, i will have my X2 4400, and i still don't know which mobo to buy.
You owners of these two ones, can you say me which is the best for overclocking the X2 ? Is there a kind of limitation in one or the other ? ( Vcore // memory timings // bios, etc..)
I must also consider that i don't really need SLI ( but maybe later ?) ; And the neo4 platinum is a bit cheaper than diamond ..
    Thanks.

The good thing is my DDR is happy with only 2.6v, and i will certainly not change it anymore
is it true than the Neo4 Plat. has not a high Vcore to set ?  thing's like max 1.55v .. ( Maybe seen that in an old bios, don't remember..)
    Thanks for your advice

I am an newbie in photography..its more of an hobby which i got into recently. I am looking to upgrade from my ancient Canon Rebel T1i to either 70D and 6D but i am totally confused which one should i go for. Other than the $700 price difference and full frame vs crop sensor i want to know which one should i go for. I shoot mainly landscape and night time photography and have a tokina wide angle and 24-105 L lens.  Mainly looking for Pros and cons of either cameras and which one would work for better for me and why.

If you have full frame lenses, particularly the 24-105, mostly shoot landscapes and don't intend on buying new lenses I'd say get the 6D.
The 70D is a nice camera, I have one, but without something wider you're not going to have the tools you need for landscapes.

  • Which one to buy: Audigy 2 ZS or Audig

I'd like to buy quality sound card, but I'm confused. I don't know which one will be suitable for my needs. I need it for music (85%, listening, not production)) and gaming (5%). I don't want to buy X-FI, because it doesn't work on Linux (it's my main platform).
    Which one to buy?

lol, should have phrased that question better. Audigy 4 as its newer, better and more powerfull than audigy2 zs. also audigy 4 has seperate jacks for headphones line in and out. i rip vinyl to mp3, so need seperate line in/out. that is why i never bought an x-fi card, has stupid 3 way jack going on there.

  • Which model to buy...

I need some help deciding which model to buy. I currently own an:
    imac g4 800 MHz
with a 15 inch flat panel
    512MB SDRAM
    60G Hard drive
2x Superdrive that only writes to DVD-R
There is no question in my mind that an upgrade would make me happy. I just need to decide on what to upgrade to.
I may have narrowed it down to any of the imac g5 models.
First, i'd like to know if i would experience a significant difference editing in final cut pro (i do freelance video editing) with a new imac g5 as compared to editing in my current imac g4 (particularly in exporting and compressing). Ofcourse, i'm certain that it would be faster. But i may be expecting too much of a difference. Apple even goes so far as saying "forget you ever waited for your computer to do what you said" on the website. The optimist in me wants to expect something mind blowingly fast. Can anyone shed some light on this for me.
Now, to my specific choices (i've narrowed it down to 2, based on my budget which i've stretched to its limit):
    (1) imac 17"/2GHz/512/400G
    or
    (2) imac 20"/2GHz/512/250G
Option 2 is just about $20 more expensive than option 1. So i'm leaning towards option 2 because I do alot of graphic arts, web design and video editing work and a big canvas to work on really makes a big difference for me. But i'm also thinking that the 150G extra hard disk space could be very useful.
So, it's a question of bigger display or bigger hard drive for me.
I'm still leaning towards option 2 because I can eventually buy an external HD in the future if ever i'll need it and have enough money (is this a good idea? i've seen a few "problems with external HD" posts in the forum).
    So in summation:
    In purchasing my new mac...
    (1) Will I experience a mind blowing difference editing videos in final cut pro compared to the current mac that i currently have?
    (2) bigger display or bigger hard drive?
And if you think I should choose from a different set of options, please feel free to suggest. I will be more confused, but I always believe in putting much thought in purchases like these. If you've read this far, thank you and my apologies.

Well I am going to throw a wrench in the works...
I not going to give a complete History here, but I have edited on a 800MHz iMac G4, an iMac 1.6 G5, and a couple of PowerMac G5's. I have also used Photoshop on all 3. For my money, I would get a Dual. Maybe wait for a refurbished on the Apple site or check eBay. IMHO, a fast dual G4 will outperform a slow single G5. Of course a Dual G5 would be the best. Is there a mind-boggling speed difference between the single G5 and the double? There will be in rendering. This is one process that REALLY uses both processors. Besides that, I think you would more likely see a mind-boggling performance increase in the dual. I can Compress my video and still work in Photoshop and hardly know it on a Dual G5. I could not do that on my iMac G5. You would know when processor intensive tasks were being performed. Finally, you break out of the all-in-constraint. Maybe you don't get the biggest screen now, but you can add one later (& CRTs are better for color & cheaper!), you can add a hard drive (highly recommended), more RAM, a PCI firewire card (which bypasses 99% of all the problems you read about) and so on. The next time you need to upgrade computers, the only thing you will need to upgrade is the computer. And a refurbished G5 isn't anymore than a new iMac. I should also add that the more RAM in any machine the better, but it won't make any difference in terms of rendering. Rendering is processor intensive. Period.

You can use the same Apple ID for both phones, you would then be able to use the purchased Apps/Content on both phones without having to pay again.

  • Which Desktop to Buy for Solaris 8 ???

    Hi,
Recently I bought a Dell Dimension 4100 system and found out that Solaris 8 does not install on that because of some acpi problems.
Now I am returning the system and planning to buy another one.
Can somebody tell me which system to buy so that I am able to sucessfully install Solaris 8 on it.
I checked the Hardware Compatibality list but it either lists expensive servers or outdated desktops which the manufacturers no longer sell.
I am looking to buy a P3 atleast with 1GHz Clock Speed.
If somebody knows then please let me know.
    Thanks
    Anurag

I recommend you stay away from the 21.5" iMac and Mac mini because they cannot be upgraded. Upgrading the 27" iMac's memory when you need the extra RAM will be less expensive than maxing out the RAM now and less expensive than replacing the computer a couple years from now. The retina iMac is beautiful but in your work how many times have you felt your 2007 iMac lacked pixels? Maybe you'd benefit from it, maybe not. When it comes to the difference between displays I've always recommended people sit down in front of them and see. Looking at the specs, my wife's display looks like a winner. She loves using it, I hate it. Displays are a very personal choice.

    Bryan,
You can download both at the same time.
But you may wish to start off with one and use it full time, then download the other later, so you get the maximum possible time with both.
If you have trouble getting the free trial on the Adobe site, you may try here or here:

  • New-B!  Which camcorder to buy?

Hello all. Totally new to this forum and to video editing. I have a clean slate and am trying to figure out which camcorder to buy this weekend and was hoping for some help. What I'm looking for is good quality video (doesn't have to be great, but solid) that I can easily import to iMovie 08 and then edit with either of my computers and export the finished product to the Web, or burn to DVD using iDVD. I've been doing a lot of reading and it seems that I could have trouble with some cameras using my G5 as it is not Intel powered, so I would like to stay away from those. I'm not needing to do anything professional with this, just something that is good quality, easy to use, compatible with iMovie 08 and iDVD, and is under $1000. I would consider buying an HD Camcorder while understanding that I have to film/export in a non-HD format until I get FC down the road. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks so much

I did have a problem with Canon repair service during the first year when I bought one of their camcorders several years ago. The on-start-off switch started being intermittent after only 4-5 months and got worse from there. Canon wouldn't do the repair, as their guarantee said, and wanted to charge me a high price to do it. I operated using the remote for a long while. The camera finally wouldn't turn on at all and became totally useless.
Needless to say, I haven't purchased another Canon product since that time. Since then, I went to other makes and have spent quite a bit on both still digital cameras and, very recently now, a camcorder by Sony (HDR-HC9). I stay with the miniDV tapes for both quality and convenience purposes, and also found that I had to revert to iMovie HD (vs 6, rather than iMovie 8) in order to properly edit my videos. So far, I really like my results with the HDR-HC9 - and iMovie 6.
Incidentally, I now only purchase fine camera equipment from very well established local dealers who specialize in camera equipment rather than the big box electronic supply house where I purchased the Canon. The largest camera dealer in Atlanta told me that Canon should certainly have done the repair for me and that Canon would have - if I had purchased it from that dealer. They said that they have such a large volume that they easily pressure such camera makers to uphold their guarantees since Canon wants them to continue selling their product.
I went from a very strong preference for Canon to the opposite. The big box electronic supply house simply said it was between me and Canon and that they wouldn't help at all. So, "good price" is not at all necessarily "good deal". Besides, the good sellers will now generally try to meet the best internet prices.
    Good luck.
So time has passed, but these are lessons that, at least, this one person has learned by experience. Hopefully, Canon may have corrected their problems in their service department by this time. But, I don't feel inclined to test them again myself.
