Confused... why are my exports smaller than my versions???

I am having a heck of a time figuring this out. My file size (I've not done a thing to the photo since importing it) is 4.29MB. When I export the photo as a version it's 1.81MB. What's going on here?

Ezra,
I think you may need to step back and get some of the basics of Aperture.  I'd suggest starting with this part of the manual:
http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=3%26sec tion=1%26tasks=true
So with iPhoto I was able to export the exact same sized photo that was in iPhoto.
iPhoto is different from Aperture in many ways.  iPhoto keeps your master, untouched (obviously at full size), and when it applies each adjustment, it derives another full-size photo which is also stored in the library.  Thus, in your iPhoto library, there are 2 full sized pictures.
Aperture, however, keeps a version. The version is a recipe: applying certain instructions to the master to derive the image you want.  The versions are virtual.  Yes, there are thumbnails and potentially previews, but these are low-res cousins of your master, with adjustments applied.  No where in the Aperture library is there a full-sized photo corresponding to your version.  I.e., there is no analog to "exact same sized photo that was in iPhoto" when discussing Aperture.
If you were to export my originals with the adjustments I've made, for the sake of back-up, what's the best way to go? TIFF?
(Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse, but I'm trying to address your questions, and they all lead back to the same place...)
There is no such thing as "originals with the adjustments".  Those are versions.  For the sake of backup, I would use a vault.
If you wish to torture yourself for a couple minutes, you can read about the very topic you asked about, posted two days ago: Shouldn't I regularly Export versions (thorough backup).
In direct answer to your question, I have a few.  The first is: since Aperture keeps your masters (if you have chosen to import into the Aperture library) and the instructions to get to any version, backing up your Aperture library is the best way to ensure your versions remain intact.  To go along with that, is to back up your masters as you import them (You can review that in the Import dialog).  However, and I think this is what you were asking, if you want to "bake in" adjustments, I would use TIFF. That's just my opinion.  Should you choose the above torture, you will also find some other opinions.  Of course, if you choose to "bake in" the adjustments, you have degraded your photo.  Any further adjustments you do in the future will not produce as high-quality as if you had your master accompanied with the recipe (version).
Hope this is at least a bit enlightening!

Why are my exported files not going to my email (receipts & business card)?  I have used 3 different ones...2 yahoo and 1 hotmail.  I have checked spam box also.

  • Why are Image Export Sizes Doubled when using Save vs. SaveForWeb&Devices?

    Hi Folks
Maybe I'm missing something here ...
I have 2 versions of an action I use to batch process images. One uses the Save As dialogue and the other uses SaveForWeb&Devices. However, the image sizes created using the latter are about 50% smaller than those created with the former. The two actions differ only in the Save step - I duplicated the original and swapped the save step in the action.
Is SaveForWeb&Devices usign a more efficient optimisation algorithm or am I missing something?
The reason for using the Save As dialog is that Batch Processing is able to override the save location, whereas I had trouble overriding save location in a batch process which used an Action that Saved using SaveForWeb&Devices.
    Cheers
    Richard
P.S. I also find this size doubling takes place when using the Image Processing script supplied with PS. I'm on PS5 on OSX10.6.8.

SfW throws out redundant custom data, when the normal JPEG save does not. Using the normal save e.g. also retains clipping paths (10 years ago people used that al lthe time for print stuff) and of course also more info on color management, user metadata and what have you. Therfe may bne more specific optimizations in SfW, but that's something Mr. Cox can probably answer better...

Visited Genius Bar. Solution was System Preferences/Accessibility/Display and move cursor size to Normal. A couple months back I evidently saw the option of making the arrow larger and did so and did not discover the problem in Elements until later. Before I visited Genius Bar I discovered same problem with Photoshop CS6 and Pixelmator. I had also uninstalled then reinstalled Elements and knew it wasn't a bug in the software.

why are menus grayed-out in trial version? how can I use the effects then?

Every piece of software has a learning curve, and its own terminology.  After Effects is a complex professional tool, used by home enthusiasts right through to feature film makers.
There's plenty of very user friendly video editing software that will do the tasks you've mentioned easily.  Might I suggest Adobe Premiere Elements.
For the record, you can't apply an effect to anything in After Effects until you have selected a target layer in the timeline.  This functionality is true of any video editing or compositing software I can think of,

  • Why are my exports different sizes?

When I export a photo from aperture, I am getting a different file size than what it says in aperture.  This happens with edited images or non-edited.  I've tried changing the export presents and they all give me different file sizes, which makes sense.  But I can't seem to export a photo and get it to come out the exact same size as what it says in aperture.  If I set the quality to 12 in export presets, it ends up being much larger than what it is in aperture, if it's set to 11 or lower the photo ends up being smaller than aperture's size.  What am I doing wrong?

That's how JPG works.  The compression is redone every time the file is saved.  When you export, you create a new file.  If you create a JPG, it will be created to the compressing setting you use, but that compression setting is specific to the program using it, and will not result in a file of the same size saved by a different program.
The only way to get the exact same file is to export the file you imported -- in Aperture, this is done as "File➞Export➞Original".
If you are aiming for the highest quality JPG that fits within a upper limit of storage required (e.g. 5 MB), you can make small changes using "Size to" set to "Percent of Original" and then trying, for example, 90%.  For almost all uses a quality of 11 is more than sufficient.  For printing (where max IQ is primary, and file size shouldn't matter) use TIFF 16-bit.

  • Why are my pictures smaller and heavier on illustrator and photoshop?

    Hello everyone,
I'm having a problem that I can't fix and it's geting in the way of my work. I'm the sole designer (and trainee) so I don't have anyone to help me at work with this.
I work on a macbook pro (retina screen), with CSS, and when I scale pictures on Photoshop to, let's say, 1000px wide and then save them at 150dpi and to 300 dpi and open them on Illustratot, the pictures don't fit properly on an A4 board. And the 300dpi picture is much smaller than the 150dpi one (shouldn't it be the opposite?).
And then, the real problem comes with my co-workers, who work on pc and with PhotoScape, when I asked them to scale the same pictures at the same ratio (1000px wide), when they send me the scaled pictures and I open them on the same Illustrator project, the picture is much much bigger than the one I scaled on Photoshop on my macbook pro, and at the same time much much lighter.
My pictures are about Megas or Gigas heavy, and theirs is KB heavy.
So each time I need to work with pictures I need to constantly ask them to scale these pictures and send it to me. Which is ridiculous.
My projects keep being huge (very heavy) and I don't know why.
Attached is what's happening. The biggest pic is the original one. The one on the left is the one scaled on PhotoScape, and the ones on the right were scaled on Photoshop at the same ratio as the one on PhotoScape (so they should have the same px in wide), and the one up is 300dpi, and the one down is 170dpi.

PPI is the correct word for an image's resolution.
As for printing: ask the service provider what's best for their workflow. It totally depends on the process, on the hardware, on the paper and on the size of the print.
For video: use screen resolution unless you want to enlarge the footage in the video.
    Additionally:
read the manual of the video software in use
    read about printing:
Search for the "Creative Suite® 6 Printing Guide" in your preferred search engine.

  • Using LR 5 to make slideshow and images in the preview are correct but when I play the actual slideshow the pictures are a lot smaller than what they should be. Help!

I'm making a slideshow with Lightroom 5. I'm using a 2014 Macbook Pro. Everything works except when I play the actual slideshow the pictures are smaller than what they should be. But the preview is showing the correct photo size. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it? Thanks!

    Hey ronfya
Did you ever get any feedback on this? I haven't read the Technicolor link yet.  I was just trying to figure out why my stuff comes out darker on Vimeo. Could this be because FCPX is displaying it to brightly?

OK…I purchased and downloaded Elements 9.0 for my MACs ( I have two in two different locations).  I installed on both and the brushes work as expected on one of them but not the other.  Guess that is why I asked about a reinstall….possibly something went wrong on this computer when installed.
I am just trying to create an image for a background paper and have selected a brush.  I resize it with the bracket key (and have also tried resizing with the slider on the menu up top).  I hover the brush over the area I want to place it and then click.  The brush is smaller than the hover image every time.   Makes it hard to know where to lace my brush for proper placement.  As far as the percentage…..that actually is a guesstimate, but it isn't 50% smaller that's for sure.

  • Why are my aliases larger than 4k ?

I just set up a whole lot of image files in a special alias folder. I expected each alias to be 4k in size. About 10% are 4k, the rest are between 44k and 56k.
The originals are all Photoshop JPEGs, created in Photoshop 2 and Photoshop 7.
I thought an alias was just a file pointer. Why are some of them so large? Is there any way to make them smaller? They are taking up way too much space on my USB thumb drive.
    iMac G5 17" 1.5Gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Ok Niel - so far, so good. I have done what you suggested, and yes I now have a folder of 4k aliases - so thank you for that idea.
The one small problem is that there is no icon of the image that the alias represents, at least not until I click on the alias name in column view, when it shows up nicely. But in list view, icon view, or unselected in column view, I can't see what it is. Is there any way around this? I have tried using Get Info to paste the image into the icon field, but it won't let me do it, and I suspect that would increase the size to more than 4k. What I want is the old OS 9 system that would create a 4k alias AND give me a tiny image of the file as well.
If I really can't do it, then I will have to live with using the filename alone, but at least I have 4k aliases.

  • Why are Symmetric keys shorter than ASyemmetric keys and provide the same level of security.

    Hello
Can someone please help me with the following question.
Can someone please give me a brief (if possible) why Symmetric Keys which are much shorter than Asymmetric keys provide a similar level of security (e.g. take as long to crack).
I understand RSA and can to the math with a piece of paper and the Windows advanced calculator (e.g. encrypt and decrypt a sort message using a couple of small prims likes 53 and 59).
I also understand ( to a very basic level) AES e.g. 128bit block cypher (I believe a CBC cypher using an unpredictable IV)
Is there a simple answer if someone says why are Symmetric keys shorted and just as secure or it is just how it is? due to the different math?
    Thank you

Symmetric Key is used for same key for encrypsion & decryption but ASyemmetric key is used two keys (Public & private key) for
    encrysion & decryption.
    ASyemmetric
    1. If Public key is used for  encrypsion then private key is used for decryption
    2. If private key is is used for  encrypsion then public key is used for decryption.
    3. It is more secure than Syemmetric

  • Adobe PDF files are printing out smaller than 8 1/2 by 11; only happens on Firefox not IE.

I downloaded the latest free version of Adobe Reader.
Now on Firefox, the page view is surrounded by a black screen. I can increase the view size, and have the document fill the whole page. However, when I go to print, the document prints smaller than an 8 1/2 x 11 page with black space (almost as if I scanned something without a cover) all around it.
Not only is it difficult to read some files, I'm wasting black ink.
I happened to be on another site using Internet Explorer and when I downloaded a file using that browser, everything was normal. No unusual size dimensions, no problems printing.
Seems to be a Firefox issue.
    Any suggestions?

You can change the action for Portable Document Format (PDF) from Preview in Firefox to use the Adobe Reader or to Always Ask.

  • Why are my exported files so small with lightroom 3?

I have been editing 10 mb raw files and they are no bigger than 2 mb jpegs afterwards.why is that?
i have been using presets while editing and i reset all settings at some point as my crop tool wasn't working properly.the resolution slider in the export window is at 100%, 240 pixels per inch, and everything else seems to be the way it was before. What am i doing wrong? I used to get much bigger exported files, cca 7-8 mb.

I have just imported  raw file from my camera, taken at a full resolution of 21 MP. The raw file has about 23mb and the exported jpeg without the resize to fit box ticked 7 MB. I uploaded the photo on the website and it's still not good enough for a 20''x30'' print. I am not sure if other websites accept other formats than jpeg, as this one doesn't. Not that i want to use them but it was the easiest way for me to check.
I am not sure if my client will want a canvas print, i am only assuming they might as they did in the past and i want to know what to do if that happens. I read that genuine fractals 6 pro is good, enlarges about 4 times the original size.
The ppi image resolution required for "handheld" print viewing is higher than that for pictures to be hung a wall and viewed at a distance of  three feet or more.
The ppi image resolution required for a large canvas print is even lower, with good results obtainable a 100 ppi. Canvas prints have a textured surface that reduces the print resolution and doesn't require as high ppi image file. Print houses use RIP engines that process the image file for both paper profile and printer native resolution. These RIP engines use very sophisticated "upscaling" algorithms, which are as good or better than a photo editing software application such as LR and Genuine Fractals. Because of this it is advisable not to upscale image files to meet a specific printer resolution such as 300 dpi.
Your 21 mp image files (5184 x 3456) at 100 ppi equates to a 50" x 33" canvas print with edge wrap. Many print houses only accept sRGB profiled JPEG files, but exporting from LR with 100 Quality you create a virtually lossless JPEG image file. You should have no difficulty producing a high-quality canvas print from a well processed 21 mp raw image file up to 50" x 33" in size.
For enlargements on regular photo paper 150 ppi minimum is required for good results. For your 21 mp image files this equates to 35" x 23," so there should be no problem printing 20" x 30" enlargements for framed wall mount viewing.
What website gave you the "still not good enough" message for the 20" x 30" print and what is the actual resolution (???? x ????) of the JPEG file you uploaded? Reimport that JPEG file into LR to see the resolution if necessary.

  • After importing a Light Room catalog, the files I export, export smaller than the originals - with every option of file ending.  I want to export them as DNGs but the files are reduced from around 5000 pixels to about 1700 pixels in length.

Hi All ~ Thanks in advance for your help!
I have been on a support chat with Adobe for 2 hours now and they can't figure this out but hopefully one of you can!
I exported my files as a LightRoom Catalog
I zipped the catalog and the smart previews together
I sent the zipped folder via Dropbox to a photo editor
    Editor edited the photos
Editor exported the files as a Lightroom Catalog and zipped them
Editor sent the LR Catalog back to me via Dropbox
I opened the Lightroom Catalog in LR (the pixel dimensions are the same as the originals)
I exported the photos as DNG's (which does not allow for any file size changes - I also tried JPGs and the same thing happened)
Camera Raw 7.1 and later (I tried them all just to see - and they all rendered the same result)
Embed Fast Load Data (checked on)
Embed Original Raw File (check on)
I checked the Pixel dimensions on my exported photos and they are smaller
    The original pixel dimensions are:
4912x7360 and the new size (after exporting) is: 1709x2560
