Confused with backups

hi all, i am slowly, very slowly getting to grips with my Mac Book Pro, but i am still confused by Time Machine, i have a "My Passport" 1tb drive to put my backups on, i have so far done about 5 back ups and only used,  about 50gig of space on the 1tb drive, i have always wondered how my backups don't take very long to do, obviousy they aren't very big, and then i think, perhaps it ONLY backs up the changes since my last back up.
in other words it doesn't look as if it has yet done a FULL back up
you can see from the screen shot below the size of a full back up (i think ?) So how can i do a FULL BACK UP please.
i would like to know that i have definitely backed up all my Emails within the MAIL program and similarly i would like to know that i have backed up all my iPad backups and Backed up all the App's i have purchased for my iPad and my Mac.

  • I am confused with Mac OS X Server Time machine backup plan

I just purchased a Mac mini with Snow Leopard server. I just start use this Mac mini for home file sharing server, iTune musics, photo processing (under my user/Picture directory) and iPhone coding (under my user/Document directory).
Since there are some critical personal file in this Mac mini, I am looking for a backup plan.
Original, I setup Time Machine as my iMac and I though Time Machine will backup everything, especially my photos. So, I enable my Mac mini Time Machine and assign backup to my 1TB external hard drive, it seems works correct.
But I happen browse this document today the "Apple Documentation for setting up Snow Leopard Server".
    http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/AdvancedServer_Adminv10.6.pdf
And it seems said Time Machine will not backup everything and it also not mentioned if photos and musics will be backup or not.
Then I look into my external 1TB hard drive via terminal, it's free space decreased and looks like my data are already backup in this 1TB hard drive.
So, should I choice another backup plan, like purchase another external RAID and use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup?
    Any suggestion is welcome. TIA.

Sorry to hear you've had so much trouble with backups
On the contrary. I have no issues with my backups. What gave you that idea?
From your post, I guess you know something that CA or Tivoli doesn't.
If you're referring to my umm... disdain for Retrospect I would have to assume they're aware of the problems running their product on production Mac OS X Servers. It's not hard to find references to people running into problems with it. If they're not aware then their support escalation process needs work.
Your method may work, but not if you have a site power or fire failure
OK, you lost me there. Which method are you referring to? replication? That's entirely viable as a protection against power or fire - locate the replica in a different datacenter/office/whatever.
want to have a cost effective solution (requires complete servers)
How valuable is your data? How much does downtime cost you?
How much does a second server cost?
or have off-site backups (to take one off-site for storage you will have to buy another server)
    See my point above.
not to mention various compliancy issues
If you're dealing with any of the major compliancy issues (e.g. SOX, HIPPA, PCI, etc.) then the cost of a replication server is trivial compared to the cost of even thinking about compliance (most consultants charge thousands of dollars just to walk in the door and say 'hi').
Not to mention that any of the above compliance rules pretty much require replication, and you taking a weekly (or even daily) copy of your disk home with you is just not going to cut it.
I have been using BRU for some time now
I have a lot of respect for BRU. One of the better options out there (assuming they fixed the awful UI issues they had in early versions).
save for having to shut off the sql engine before one short backup
Thank you for validating my statement - you cannot backup an active server without terminating services that are writing to the disk.
Of course, in the replication model, you could temporarily stop replication, shut down the service, perform your backups, then restart services/replication (which will automatically catch up with the intermediate changes), while allowing clients to continue talking to the primary server.
THAT is the definition of performing backups of live data/servers without impacting users.

  • Time machine is turned off but my startup disk keeps filling up with backup files on a hidden volume.

My Time Machine is turned off but my system startup drive keeps filling up with backup files in a hidden volume. How can I stop this? When Time Machine was turned on, the destination was set to an external drive.  I was completely confused about what was happening until I used Houdini to reveal the hidden volume. I have no idea how it got created or why it keeps filling up with no backup application running to my knowledge.  Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
Download this, or a similar tool if you prefer:
OmniDiskSweeper - Products - The Omni Group
Boot in safe mode. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all, possibly including wireless networking.
Does your boot volume continue to fill up? Use the above tool to explore the volume and find out where the space is going.

  • Problem with backups on Tape

Could you help me ,I have a problem with backups on tape drive .The error which Windows throws is "BackupTapeFile::UnloadTape: PrepareTape(UNLOCK) failure on backup device '\\.\tape0'. Operating system error 21(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15105)."
Does anyone of you have the same problem.Thank you!

You cannot perform a regular restore/recovery (up to the latest possible point in time), because at this time dropped tablespace is not known to the controlfiles/recocery catalog and therefore not known to RMAN,too. You have to 2 possibilities:
    1. Restore the entire database and recover back in time to before the tablespace is dropped.
This will cause ALL data within the database to go back in time, not just this tablespace.
    2. Clone the target database to a new location, perform point in time recovery in order to export
the data of the tablespace for import into the original database. This causes the data of this
tablespace to be brought back into the production database, not effecting existing (current) data
in any other area of the database.
As you can see recovering from a dropped tablespace needs some additional efforts. By the way you also cannot use RMAN's TSPITR functionality.

DON'T DO IT! Read the threads ... there is a MAJOR problem with updating iPhones 3GS/4 to iOS 5.

  • [Solved]Need help with backup-manager

So I'm trying to set up backup-manager to make.. well, backups. Their wiki has been shut down thanks to spammers, and ours has no specific entry for backup-manager, so I will have to do it with its man page and the (well documented) config file. However, I still have some questions. Sorry in advance for the amount of questions and the length of the topic. I just wanted to get this clear in one go.
First: I want to make a *full* system backup, so that I can restore my system in case of breakage without reinstalling. When I looked at creating backups in the past, I noticed some folders don't necessarily had to be backupped. What folders in / could I skip?
Second: I chose the tarball backup format. Would it then be safe to comment out all the other variables (for tarbal-incremental/mySQL) backups?
Third: Now there were some parts of the config file that I didn't understand. I hope you can explain some of those parts to me.
    # Number of days we have to keep an archive (Time To Live)
    export BM_ARCHIVE_TTL="5"
That means the archive it creates will be removed after 5 days - but what if I copy it to my external hard disk? I don't think it will delete it then, so would it be safe to comment this out - or what will it do if I just keep it this way?
    # At which frequency will you build your archives?
    # You can choose either "daily" or "hourly".
    # This should match your CRON configuration.
    export BM_ARCHIVE_FREQUENCY="daily"
I either want to make a backup when I want to, or weekly - not hourly or daily. Is this possible with backup-manager?
    # Do you want to purge only the top-level directory or all
    # directories under BM_REPOSITORY_ROOT?
    export BM_REPOSITORY_RECURSIVEPURGE="false"
I don't understand that option. Could you explain me what it will do? Info: BM_REPOSITORY_ROOT is set to my home folder. It's the place where the archives are stored.
    # Do you want to replace duplicates by symlinks?
    # (archive-DAY is a duplicate of archive-(DAY - 1) if they
    # are both the same according to MD5 hashes).
    export BM_ARCHIVE_PURGEDUPS="true"
Will this harm anything in my system?
    # Do you want to dereference the files pointed by symlinks ?
    # enter true or false (true can lead to huge archives, be careful).
    export BM_TARBALL_DUMPSYMLINKS="false"
This would 'destroy' all symlinks, no? I'm going to keep this at false, but I would like to know.

Tried to do a selective upgrade & broke something this morning so I tried restoring my CompleteRaid0 backup, worked like a charm.
This is the latest backup script I'm using:
    #!/bin/sh
    # Little script to tar up the important root folders.
    # To untar, use:
    # tar -xvpzf /path/to/backup/<date>-backup.tar.gz -C </path/to/root>
echo "Do you want to clear pacman's cache before tarring up the root folder? This will save time in both the tar- and untar process."
    echo -n "(y|N) > "
    read a
    if [[ "$a" = "n" ]] || [[ "$a" = "N" ]] || [[ "$a" = "" ]]; then
echo "Pacman's cache will not be cleared."
    else
echo "Pacman's cache will be cleared now, please wait..."
    pacman -Scc --noconfirm
echo "Pacman's cache succesfully cleared. Continuing now..."
    sleep 2s

    DATE=`date +%m%d-%H%M%S`
    CB=CompleteRaid0-$DATE.tar.gz
    NB=FreshInstall-$DATE.tar.gz
    echo "********************************************************************************"
echo "Proceeding with Fresh Install backup $NB."
    echo "********************************************************************************"
    sleep 5
    cd /
    tar -cvpzf $NB --one-file-system \
    /boot \
    --exclude=/$NB \
    --exclude=/dev \
    --exclude=/etc/fstab \

    mv $NB /home/chuck/Backups/
    echo "********************************************************************************"
    echo "Sleeping for 10 seconds."
echo "Proceeding with complete backup $CB."
    echo "********************************************************************************"
    sleep 5
    tar -cvpzf $CB --one-file-system \
    /boot \
    --exclude=/$CB \
    --exclude=/tmp \

    mv $CB /home/chuck/Backups/
    echo "********************************************************************************"
    echo "Backups Complete"
    echo "********************************************************************************"
    sleep 10
    exit 0
    Restored it with this:
    #!/bin/sh
    # To untar, use:
    # tar -xvpzf /path/to/backup/<date>-backup.tar.gz -C </path/to/root>
    tar -xvpzf /home/chuck/Backups/now.tar.gz -C /
    mkdir /proc \
    /lost+found \
    /sys \
    /mnt \
    /media \
    /mnt/bind/Downloads \
    /mnt/bind/Pictures \
    /mnt/bind/Maintenance \
    /mnt/bind/Music \
    /mnt/bind/Backups
    exit 0
Of course the directories already existed so that part was unnecessary & only needed if I had restored onto a fresh installation.

  • Issue with backup NCS via NFS (Cisco Prime NCS 1.2.0)

    Hello,
Does someone have issue with backup NCS via externally mounted location (NFS)?
I have Cisco Prime NCS 1.2.0 and tried backup it to external resources, but I have issue with my free space:
    NCS/admin# backup ncs repository backup_nfs
% Creating backup with timestamped filename: ncs-130131-0534.tar.gpg
INFO : Cannot configure the backup directory size settings as the free space available is less than the current database size.
You do not have enough disk space available in your repository to complete this backup.
    DB size is 25 GB
    Available size is 12 GB
Please refer to the command reference guide for NCS and look at the /backup-staging-url/ command reference to setup the backup repository on an externally mounted location
Stage 5 of 7: Building backup file ...
      -- complete.
Stage 6 of 7: Encrypting backup file ...
      -- complete.
Stage 7 of 7: Transferring backup file ...
      -- complete.
I have tried to add additional space and use command backup-staging-url (my configuration: backup-staging-url nfs://server2008:/nfs), but it didn't help me.
NFS share works perfect. I have checked it via NFS repository:
    repository backup_nfs
      url nfs://server2008:/nfs
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    NCS/admin# show repository backup_nfs
    NCS-130130-1135.tar.gpg
    NCS-130130-1137.tar.gpg
    NCS-130130-1157.tar.gpg
    NCS-130130-1158.tar.gpg
    test-130130-1210.tar.gz
Everytime when I try create backup I receive error message "You do not have enough disk space available in your repository to complete this backup".
Does someone know how can I backup NCS system?
    Thank you

How much space is availabe on that NFS mount point? It looks like to me from the error message that there is only 12 GB....
The backup-staging-url is just for a space used to stage the backup before it is written-----

  • New bug in 8.02 - regions confused with each other

So, I just updated to 8.02, and loaded up a recent project that was half finished (bad idea).
Now I have some strange bugs going on that I never had before, and they are basic issues.
My audio regions keep getting confused with each other.
I have an audio region that I can't open in the sample editor. When I double click on it, the sample editor will bring up the last region I edited, not the new one. I've re-named the region, deleted it and re-added it to the arrange window, but this region will not open in the sample editor.
I can see it in my media bin, and preview it there, and it plays in my arrangement no problem, but I can't get it to open in the sample editor. In fact sometimes when I click on it, with the media window open, I can see another sample being 'selected' in the media window instead of the proper audio region.

finally i find someone else with the same prob, o already post into apple.com too
yes here the same, bug new in 8.0.1, cause on logic 8.0.0 all works fine (except some click noise when you pre-listen a file in autoloop)
however here what i can say to you (it's 3 days i'm studyng this cause i make a massive use of ultrabeat)
    - no matter both power pc / intel soffer of this bug
    - i try to update to leopard from my 10.4.11 (same bug) tryin a new os installation (same bug), tryn without audio card and driver (same bug)
so i really don't know how to solve it, cause there are only few people that have this problem

  • Socket Programing in J2ME - Confused with Sun Sample Code

    Hai Everybody,
I have confused with sample code provided by Sun Inc , for the demo of socket programming in J2ME. I found the code in the API specification of J2ME. The code look like :-
// Create the server listening socket for port 1234
    ServerSocketConnection scn =(ServerSocketConnection) Connector.open("socket://:1234");
where Connector.open() method return an interface Connection which is the base interface of ServerSocketConnection. I have confused with this line , is it is possible to cast base class object to the derived class object?
Plese help me in this regards
    Thanks in advance
    Sulfikkar

There is nothing to be confused about. The Connector factory creates an implementation of one of the extentions of the Connection interface and returns it.
For a serversocket "socket://<port>" it will return an implementation of the ServerSocketConnection interface. You don't need to know what the implementation looks like. You'll only need to cast the Connection to a ServerSocketConnection .

  • Interface RMAN with BACKUP EXEC

    Hi,
I want to backup my database on tape with backup exec but i don't know the parameters to put on init.ora.
    Thanks

Possibly 2 parameters (depends on the environment, refer to your MML documentation):
RMAN utilizes the LARGE_POOL area of the SGA for allocating
    memory for input/output buffers.
The LARGE_POOL is only used if I/O Slaves are specified by one or
both of the initialization parameters DBWR_IO_SLAVES or BACKUP_TAPE_IO_SLAVES.
    If DBWR_IO_SLAVES has a non-zero value and/or BACKUP_TAPE_IO_SLAVES is set to TRUE,
then RMAN uses the LARGE_POOL because the I/O Slave Processes must coordinate their
buffer read/writes in a common area. If no value for LARGE_POOL_SIZE is set in the init.ora file,
and if I/O slaves are configured to be used, then RMAN uses the SHARED_POOL for
input and output buffers. This can put severe strain on the Shared Pool,
and should be avoided. This is often indicated by RMAN receiving an ora-4031
    error from the target database.

  • Confused with HD-SD

    Hi,
All the sudden I am confused with my searches on this forum and would appreciate clarification
I am presently working on a HD project (from HD clips and HD stills).
If I want to get the best out of it, should I use only BluRay burning or would it be OK to use HD setting and burning with DVDSP on a "regular" DL disk (the compressed project will be over 7 GB ?
Should I understand that if I use HD setting with DLdisks only a HD compatible DVD player will be requested ?
will a Bluray player play the HD-DL fine ? or will a bluray disk be requested on bluray player ?
As you can see I just got really confused ...
    Thanks in advance
    Ivan

No doubt this stuff can be confusing. Hopefully I'll be able to clear a few things up.
You shot and edit an HD project in HD. Now you would like to create a DVD correct?
You have 2 options for DVD
    1. Standard Definition DVD authored in DVDSP.
    2. Blu-Ray DVD. You'll have to purchase a burner.
If you are on the newest FCS then you can author and burn a Blu-Ray DVD inside of Compressor. If you are on the previous version then you need another application to author and burn Blu-Ray like Toast or Adobe Encore.
You made mention of HD-DVD. That format is dead and won't play on anything other than your Mac or a couple specific HD-DVD players that haven't been in production for years. If you look in the DVDSP preferences you can choose which kind of DVD to burn SD-DVD or HD-DVD. Choose SD whenever you are using DVDSP.
Blu-Ray players play Blu-Ray DVD's and SD DVD's. It will not play HD-DVD.
How long is your project if the compressed (m2v) files are coming in at over 7GB?
