Confusing imac memory install

I'm confused by the description in the apple support notice(http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423):
"i5 and i7 Quad Core iMac computers come with both top memory slots populated. These computers will not start up if only a single DIMM is installed in any bottom slot; these computers should operate normally with a single DIMM installed in any top slot."
I bought an imac populated with 2- 2gig RAM chips.
But if I want to add just  ONE 4 gig chip.   The implication is that I cannot put JUST ONE  in one of the open bottom slots. So to make sure that I don't have only one chip in the bottom slot, I would need to move one of the 2 gig chips that were pre installed, into a bottom slot to go along with the 4 gig chip I'm adding.  This would put a "4" and a "2" in the bottom, and one "2" in the top.
Is this correct??

Maybe I wasn't clear.  I don't need instruction about how to put memory in.  I've taken two powerbooks, and a mac book pro apart and replace various parts and hard drives as well as putting in memory.  That's not the issue.
There are four slots for the memory.  My imac has the top two populated with two  2-gig Ram chips.  The bottom slots are empty.
The apple support bulletin clearly states  that it won't start up if I only put on chip in the two bottom slots.  Of course I could buy another 4 gig chip, but not knowing this upfront I did not do so.  Since I am now working on my old powerbook 800, as my macbook pro developed the black screen of death, I am chomping at the bit to get back into my new imac when it comes.  But clealry from the bulletin, if I just put a 4 gig in the empty slot, it won't start up.  So this means I have to move one of the two gig ram chips to the bottom slot.  Right?

Wait, I'm a little confused. On my day old iMac running Mavericks, do I install iDVD from my iLife 11 disk, or somehow copy the app from my existing iMac and install it on my new one?

The following may be a bit easier set up the new Mac with the same iDVD capability on your old Mac:
1 - copy your current iDVD application from the old Mac to the Applications folder of the new Mac. The latest version available is 7.1.2.  If you don't have that versoin go to the Apple Downloads site and download the iDVD 7.1.2 updater and run it on your current iDVD application.
2 - copy the iDVD folder that resides in the old Mac's HD/Library/Application Support folder to the same folder on your new Mac.

  • How is additional memory installed on a current iMac 27" computer?

How is additional memory installed on a current iMac 27" that comes with the factory installed 4GB?

That's correct. Save money by shopping for memory. Check OWC and DataMem. The brand is really not very important. Buy from a reliable vendor and always purchase product that carries a manufacturer's Lifetime Warranty.

  • Confusion about memory for Lion installation

I have Imac Intel core 2 duo 1gb, bought Snow Leopard and Lion for upgrade, now it say's you need 2 GB, was this mentioned on the site?

2GB is to low, Apple should be more honest here.
My late 2008 MacBook worked fine with Snow Leopard but became more or less unusable with Lion. Extremely slow and also very strange errors from applications that was related to low memory. I actually suspect bugs in Lion regarding memory management but more memory installed reduces the probability of suffering from those bugs.
I have upgraded to 4GB and now it's possible to use the computer, what a difference!
I'd say that 4GB is the minimum memory requirement for most users.

  • How do i get more memory installed on my macbook air

How do i get more memory installed on my macbook air

If you are referring to RAM, the Air's RAM is not an upgradeable component. The RAM memory is soldered to the main board, and there are no expansion slots.
It is the price Air owners pay for miniaturization. Every Air is manufactured with all the memory it will ever have. Shop wisely.
It is technically possible to upgrade the SSD storage though, but will probably void any warranty.

  • I have a late 2012 iMac and a late 2009 mac mini.  I want to know if I can take the 8 GB of ram from the iMac and install it in my mac mini.

I have a late 2012 iMac and a late 2009 mac mini.  I want to know if I can take the 8 GB of ram from the iMac and install it in my mac mini.
According to Cruicial my mac mini could use:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-8500
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.35V • 512Meg x 64
Also According to Cruical my iMac uses:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-12800
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V
I want to increase the ram in both computers.
So,  can I put the iMac ram in my mac mini and then I'd only have to buy ram for my iMac?  Naturally the ulitmate test will be when I actually install it,  but having an expectation of success or failure will allow me to plan on what to spend money on.
    Thanks,
    Bear

Thanks for the responses.  I probably wont even try as my priority is Ram for the mac mini.  2 is not enough.  8 for my imac is okay for now.
Somewhere I thought I'd heard that faster Ram would simply clock at the lower speed.  It seems that I am incorrect.
    Thanks,
    Bear

Creating a Mavericks USB boot drive after the horse has bolted.  Can I create a bootable USB drive from my iMac after installing Mavericks without saving the Install OS X Mavericks.app file?  Do I need to re- download the whole 5.29 Gb from the App Store again?  My problem is my 4Gb/month allowance on a 12 month contract.  I cannot purchase a data block from my ISP and although my speed is theoretically slowed to 64k after reaching my 4Gb, it actually ceases to download in reality.

HI tasclix, it depends what you mean by an OS X boot drive.
If you want a recovery disk from which you can reinstall (by re-downloading) or recover from a time machine backup, then nbar is correct.
If, however, you want to boot and run the OS X installer from the USB drive (so that you don't need to download again), then you will need a copy of "Install OS X  Mavericks.app"; see this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5856
Before downloading again, search your system to see if the installer is still there - it's usually in the /Applications folder unless it has been deleted, but check your whole system for it anyway, you never know, you might still have it somewhere.

  • Removing 10.7 from my new iMac and installing 10.6

I just bought an iMac with Lion OS. I am having trouble connecting to my Windows 2003 server that is using Appletalk, but I need Appletalk for the other Mac's running10.4 so I was wondering if it's possible to reformet the HD on the 10.7 Lion iMac and install 10.6 Snow Leopard. I do not want to dual boot at this time.
    Thanks for your time
    Johnnyb

The current line of iMacs (called Mid 2011) wre originally shipped with OSX 10.6.6 Snow Leopard.
Later shipments inluded 10.6.7 and the 10.7 Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159
So, you "only" have to find an appropriate OSX Snow Leopard Install DVD.
This can be difficult since the Retail version of Snow Leopard is 10.6.3 IIRC and a machine-specific iMac Snow Leopard Install DVD is not for sale.
You may call Apple and ask them for one.

  • A700: 8gb of memory installed, only 4gb are being used

The a700 that I purchased from lenovo.com was the top model (40244JU) in the a700 series and came with 8gb of memory installed.  The os system screen properly shows the 8gb of memory installed.  The bios screen shows only 4gb of memory installed, thus only 4gb are being used by the computer.  Please tell me how to update the bios since there do not seem to be any bios updates for the a700 on lenovo.com.
    Thank you.

    Dear Customer
    - There are several additional situations that could cause the usable RAM to be less than expected. These issues and possible solutions are listed here:
    Check the system configuration settings
This problem may occur because the Maximum memory option is selected incorrectly. To fix this, follow these steps:
    Click Start
    Collapse this imageExpand this image
, type msconfig in the Search programs and files box, and then click msconfig in the Programs list.
In the System Configuration window, click Advanced options on the Boot tab.
Click to clear the Maximum memory check box, and then click OK.
    Restart the computer.
Full Ram will be working properly
    Please let me know
    Thanks

Quick time Player can't open because a required codec isn't available.  The DVD I am trying to play was made on an IPAD.  My Imac came with a IMac Application install DVD, A IMac Mac OS X Install DVD, & iWork, I don't think I have iLife What additional software do I need?

Perian 1.2.3 *should* work for both QuickTime & and QTX in Mountain Lion. Regardless of the filetype container, whether it is a Matroska (.mkv) or a .mov. As to the actual encoding of the file (h264, .mp2, whatever..) I have found most play, even older formats.
Even though it's no longer supported and is a dead project, it works just fine. It will load as a System Preference file and adds to the Other category in them.
I think in 10.8 you've still got support for QTX so it may work with that. (in Mavericks, it only works for QT7)
If not, just run QuickTime 7.6.6.

If no luck there, you could also try VLC at http://www.videolan.org

  • Where is iMac memory going?

I have 4GB memory installed.  I have a program called Memory Cleaner installed.  As I use the comouter during the day, my memory gets used up and I end up with having to use the HD for additional memory.  Right now, for instance, I have Mail and Safari open, nothing else, and I show 202MB available memory.  THis is making my computer run very slow. Activity Monitor shows 1GB used for Safari, 484MB for Kernal (whatever that is), and 122MB for Mail., and then a bunch of other items. I cleared History and that didn;t make any difference. I clicked on Memory Cleaner and now I have 1.49GB availabe.  Without doing anything but type this thing, I have already dropped to 1.20 GB.  I think something is runningin the background, but I sure don;t know what it might be or where to look.
So how do I get my memory freed up?
    Thanks out there!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

i have zero out all data on my imac, as i brought it second hand and the disk the guy supplied dont seem capatable with my imac to install the operating system again so it is frozen at the grey start up screen. should i buy a new snow leopard disc from apple and install that as my new operating system. please help as had the computer a month now and still cant use it yet.

You can call AppleCare and request a replacement set of the original DVD's that shipped with the computer for a nominal charge. You will need the serial number (look on the bottom of the stand) and a credit card. Click the AppleCare Contact Info link. Without knowing which iMac you have it's very difficult to say if a new SL disc would work or not.

  • HT3932 Wireless Keyboard Update 2.0  his update doesn't work!  I'm at 10.5.8 on my old iMac G5, installed the update and brightness and volume just do not work.  What next?

This update doesn't work!  I'm at 10.5.8 on my old iMac G5, installed the update and brightness and volume just do not work.  What next?

I have a brand new wireless keyboard... so it's never going to work.  BUT... I found a sort of work round!
Since it's eyeTV that I want to control the volume more than the system volume I discovered cmd and up/down arrows do the job.  I gess I'll forgo the brightness function.
I'm a little frustrated that it appears Apple seems to want to push me towards an upgrade of a perfectly serviceable iMac G5.  I'll be keeping it to watch TV, surf the web, wordprocess and let the macbook pro handle photos & video.

  • Has anyone experience iMac memory issues with One Drive (previously Sky Drive) - uses 5GB of my 8GB memory!

I recently started experiencing memory issues with my iMac due to One Drive using up to 5GB of my iMac memory (total of 8GB). Every time I start up my iMac Activity Monitor shows One Drive uses around 4-5Gb of the internal memory for no reason. Previously Onde Drive seemed to work fine, it's only since about 2 weeks I notice this. It's really annoying as the iMac freezes up regulalrly and I need One Drive to synchronise my files across different devices.
Has anyone experienced this too and are there any known fixes?

Yes this is happening to me too, since the last upgrade. Eventually MacOS starts insisting I "Force Quit" all my applications as I have run out of application memory.
OneDrive doesn't appear in that list because it's not an application... but Activity Monotor clearly shows it's the culprit, taking up 5GB+ of RAM.
I've raised the issue on Microsoft's forums:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/onedrive/forum/sdperformance-sdother/onedrive -for-macos-memory-leak/fe04cf60-949f-47b6-b886-10539b5c5cc3?tm=1397636232934
