Confusing Packets Received vs. Packets Sent... Security breach?

Hello,
I want to know if the non-logical difference in bytes received and bytes sent is signaling a securty breach.
I controll my wireless connection very tightly; meaning, I only enable wireless when I am goint to use the internet wirlessly.  If I am not connected through the internet wirelessly, wireless part of router is disabled.
However, through the router's control panel traffic monitoring interface, I have noticed that the amout of bytes I received vs. the amount of bytes sent doesn't make sense, and I wonder if this discrepancy may actually indicate a security breach of my network.
For example, I watched video through wireless connection for 3 hours. Before I started the wireless connection, the router's control panel traffic monitoring screen showed no bytes sent no bytes received. After the 3 hours, I got ths stats:
Received Bytes 101233736
Sent Bytes 3629425895
This is a huge difference for activity which I think is mostly receiveing data packets, and not sending packets elsewhere.
This difference is more than 2G of data sent out while I was watching video and doing nothing else. How can this be? I get almost 1G of video data, and I sent our 3G of data just watching video?
Could I get some feedback on why is there such a big difference, and whether this is normal traffic acitivty given the circumsances I described (e.g. watching video content, not doing anything else).
Thank you

Looks normal to me.
From the router much more data is to your PC and much less data is needed to sent from your PC.

  • 13017 Received TACACS+ packet from unknown Network Device or AAA Client

I am adding new routers to our Corporate network for a new MPLS network.  I am getting 13017 Received TACACS+ packet from unknown Network Device or AAA Client  errors for these new routers.  They are added to ACS 5.4.0.30 correctly just like all of our other devices.  We have never had real routers on the network before, just switches and access points.  Is there something special I need to set in ACS for these to work and authenticate correctly?  I can only access the currently with built in login locally.

    Hey guys,
I am working on a  client session report in Prime infrastructure and dont understand tthis report coloums

Can any one tell me what is the difference between Byte and a Packet, on ethernet world one packet is equal to 1500 bytes (MTU). My 2nd question how do they calculate Data retries ? Data retries in bytes or packets ?
what results can we get from this coloums.
    Thanks

In most computer systems, a byte is a unit of data that is eight binary digits long. A byte is the unit most computers use to represent a character such as a letter, number, or typographic symbol (for example, "g", "5", or "?"). A byte can also hold a string of bits that need to be used in some larger unit for application purposes (for example, the stream of bits that constitute a visual image for a program that displays images or the string of bits that constitutes the machine code of a computer program).
Packet switching is a communications paradigm in which packets (units of information carriage) are routed between nodes over data links shared with other traffic. In each network node, packets are queued or buffered, resulting in variable delay. This contrasts with the other principal paradigm, circuit switching, which sets up limited number of constant bit rate and constant delay connections between the nodes for their exclusive use for the duration of the communication. When a unit of data, beginning at the application layer (top layer) is transmitted to lower layers, headers and trailers are appended to it. Once the unit of data reaches the IP layer and source and destination IP addresses are added to it, it then is known as an IP datagram. The unit of data, feeling a little bloated from having all this extra baggage is then sent to the link layer where source and destination MAC addresses are perpended to it. Now it is called a frame - and more accurately an Ethernet frame (if the physical layer is Ethernet). To be precise, the unit of data passed between the IP layer and the network interface card is really a packet of data. Thus, a packet can be an entire IP datagram or perhaps a fragment of an IP datagram.
In computer networking, the maximum transmission unit (MTU) of a communications protocol of a layer is the size (in bytes) of the largest protocol data unit that the layer can pass onwards. MTU parameters usually appear in association with a communications interface (NIC, serial port, etc.). Standards (Ethernet, for example) can fix the size of an MTU; or systems (such as point-to-point serial links) may decide MTU at connect time.

  • AppleYukon2 - bad packet received

shortly after rebooting, my system starts throwing the following error message, sometimes ten times a second:
    AppleYukon2 - bad packet received
at the same time my network speeds plummet from 7m/sec down to 400 k/sec.
any idea what's going on? i am connected to the internet via a switch to a router to a dsl modem. another machine coming off the same switch has no problem.
    ADthanksVANCE!

I am also experiencing this. It doesn't seem to happen as fast as it does for you, but does happen when I start copying files over the network via SMB/CIFS (windows file shares) or anything that seems to move at high speeds.
What is happening to me is that around the time this happens, all network connectivity drops. This seems to begin happening after the last system/security update.
Last lines of dmesg after a clean boot up:
    AppleYukon2 - en0 link active, 100-Mbit, half duplex port 0
    AirPort: Link Down on en1
Last lines of dmesg after beginning to move some files around via smb/cifs, etc:

AppleYukon2 - bad packet received. length: 1513, packet status bits: CRC error

  • CWMS 2.0 Error:unsupported Configuration-IRP not Receiving Network Packets

    Hi,
I am having a 50 user deployment non redundant setup using non split DNS.The version used for deployment is  CWMS 2.0.1.107B-AE .I have configured the ports as per the planning guide for manual deplyment, public access and Non split DNS. Forward and Reverse DNS Entries for  are also configured
After deploying the vmmachine at the end ,during the system check i get an error showing that the irp in the DMZ is not able to receive network packets and thus the deployment status is shown as Unsupported Configuration
Attaching the error received. How do I troubleshoot this?Has anyone come across this error?

    Hi,
You are definitely experiencing a network connectivity issue between the Admin and IRP VMs. Please, ensure that PING (ICMP) is allowed between the Admin and IRP VMs as well as all other required  ports (http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/collaboration/CWMS/2_0/Planning_Guide/Planning_Guide_chapter_011.html#reference_CB65D7FE4B3746DDAF1649884AD777CE). Also, ensure that DNS server is reachable from internal and DMZ networks.
Furthermore, I can see that you are using domain.internal for your VM domains. Per Certification Authority announcements, they will stop issuing SSL certificates for internal domains next year (http://www.digicert.com/internal-names.htm) so it might be good to assign a valid domain name for your VMs. This is not related to the current issue you are seeing, but can help you avoid issues with SSL certs in the future.

  • What to do with received udp packet

Hello I can finally send and receive data with udp.
But now I receive a packet
    socket.receive(packet);
But how can I get the ipaddress, portnumber and data from the packet?
I know I can get the byte length with socket.getLength.

did you bother looking at the API docs for DatagramPacket?

  • Brconnect Error ORA-12637: Packet receive failed

    Hello,
We have a problem with Brconnect (42).
When I start the brconnect program in DB13 transaction I get a following error message.
The error come when I start the brconnect program under user sapservice(SID).
When I start the brconnect program under (SID)ADM user the brconnect start error free.
After server restart the brconnect program run good approximetly 1 hours under sapservice(SID) user too.
We have used SAP ECC 6.0 with Oracle 10g with Windows 2003 x64 R2 SP2 environment.
BR0301E SQL error -12637 at location BrInitOraCreate-2, SQL statement:
'CONNECT system/************* AT PROF_CONN IN SYSOPER MODE'
    ORA-12637: Packet receive failed
BR0303E Determination of Oracle version failed
Have you get any idea what was the problem ?
    Thank you a lot.
    Imre Bolyki

    Hi,
To execute the BRTools you need to have enough permissions and the environment variables set for that particular user. by default the SAPINST sets those variables and grants the required permission to the <SID>ADM user for executing the BRTools. Other users may not have enough permission to execute this and in turn these users will not have enough access to work on the database.

  • Oracle Error :: ORA-12637 Packet receive failed

    Hi buddies,
One of my staff's PC is receiving this error sometimes when she is trying to connect to the database and she is able to connect sometimes.
Oracle Error :: ORA-12637 Packet receive failed What could be the cause.
I tried replacing her tnsadmin with my tnsadmin and it didn't make a change, still able to connnect sometimes and sometimes not.
Able to connect using PL/SQL developer, but not using our customized application. (Everyone else are able to connect)
    Is it network problem?
    Please advice.
    Thank You very much.

And from this cut-and-paste the OP is supposed to take what actions to solve the problem? Please don't just post that which is one google away every time someone posts an ORA- exception. You make some valuable contributions here but just posting expanded text doesn't give someone a list of actions to take that will help them resolve the issue. Better the question is left unanswered so others will be more likely to offer help.
    To the OP:
It is highly likely you have a network issue and the fact that it is isolated to a single machine makes it reasonably easy to fix. First try to figure out which component is failing. Go to the router or switch and swap wires between that client machine and another one that is working properly. Does the problem move? If not then swap the wires. Again does the problem move? Next the NIC card? What if you put another machine on the desk and put the original hard disk in it?
Sometimes it just isn't worth the effort so you just swap out the machine.
Intermittent problems are always hard to identify and fix. What is on your side is that this is only affecting a single user.

  • ORA-12637: Packet receive failed

    Hi All
    I really need your help.
I've installed Oracle Database 10g Release 2. Database works properly.
Developer 6i, Developer 10g, SQL Developer, etc. are working with this database without problems.
But Forms 5 can't work. It connect to Database 10g about 3 minutes. After that I can build datablocks.
When I run the form, I see the following message:
    ORA-12637: Packet receive failed
What should I do for resolve this problem?
    Thanks.

Are you sure Developer 5 can't work with Database 10g?Which Oracle version is Developer 5 ? You can see it by entering Sql*Plus from Developer 5 Home.
According to Metalink Note:207303.1 - Client / Server / Interoperability Support Between Different Oracle Versions not even 8.0.6, the Forms 6i version, is certified with 10g, but there are patches, as I said before.
I'm not aware of patches for Forms 5 to run with 10g.

  • Ora 12637 Packet received failed

    Hi,
I have created oracle an oracle database. but when i try to connect to database either through sql/plus worksheet or enterprise manager i get the error: ora-12637 packet received failed. Another database is running properly. I could not fix the problem. I have searched threads for this error and found that I should comment
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
    this line in sqlnet.ora
Although i have not tried this as my customer is running a live database. And i don't want to make experiments.
If some one knows what is the technical reason and what is the proper way to solve this. I'll be very thankfull
But please don't recommend me 3-step story provided by oracle in documentation.
    Thnx

I tested that packets can get out using netcat to send UDP messages, and I received the messages on a server on the WAN, so I know packets are getting out, but they are not making it back.
I've tried removing lines 4 and 5 from the FORWARD chain, but it didn't help.

I had some weird issues with two Windows Server 2k8 R1 guests and networking between the two experiencing difficulties after some random amount of time. A reboot often fixes it for a short period of time, but then it comes back.
After a thorough investigation with Oracle Support, we didn't identify the root cause; however upgrading to Oracle VM 2.2.2 fixed the issue.
Edit: To clarify, my issues were that RDP and mapping network shares between the two servers wouldn't work... but communication to other non-OracleVM (and some Oracle VM guests as well actually) was fine.
Doing tcpdump traces on dom0 identified intermittent packet drops somewhere between the xenbrXX interface and the underlying network interface (e.g. in my case, bond0.XX).

  • BI Analytics - ORA-12637: Packet receive failed at OCI call OCIServerAttach

    Hi All,
I'm running through 1 of the tutorials at the moment, and when I try to view results in an Analytics dashboard, I get the following error message: -

The database is running and I can connect to it through SQLPLUS, I can tnsping the DB, can anyone help me debug this?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    1. If you are using SampleSales I assume these are xml files. If so, check your initb to verify the correct path for the folders.
    2. If you are using database, check if you have place the tns in the Oracle_BI1/Network location

Our 2 wins server just started throwing these errors, twice a minute: WINS received a packet that has the wrong format. For example, a label may be  More than 63 octets
No changes were done to any of the DC's.  We are running Window 2008 and 2012 wins and they are replication partners.
I found this article but not useful in this case.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/9b246bef-9469-43e8-9ae9-7c645d739789/wins-error-event-id-4119?forum=winserverDS
Did not find to be helpful.
I restarted the services.  Even read about the 2 reg keys:
    VersCounterStartVal_HighWord
    VersCounterStartVal_LowWord
No luck.  Anything I can look at or do to stop these errors?

You might want to check with your network team. It might be something to do with the switches: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms829701.aspx
By the way, in case you do not have an application that does not support DNS, it might be worth to rely only on DNS resolution in your environment.

  • Receiving full packets in Java

    Hi there!
I'm trying to build a server in Java, and things are going relatively smoothly, but I have a problem. I seem to be receiving the same packets over and over, and not when they're supposed to be received in the protocol. This makes me believe that my code is not actually receiving full packets, but only parts of packets at a time. I.E instead of receiving this:
    1 FULL PACKET
    I am receiving this:
    Packet Part 1
    Packet Part 2
    Packet Part 3
    etc
My question is basically; Using Java.nio and the SocketChannel packets, how can I build packets from received data, without really knowing where the packet ends? It is a binary protocol, mostly, so I'm kinda left without a clue as to where each packet ends.
Here is my code that deals with receiving data:

This makes me believe that my code is not actually receiving full packets, but only parts of packets at a time.Your code uses TCP which provides a reliable byte stream. Not packets.
My question is basically; Using Java.nio and the SocketChannel packets, how can I build packets from received data, without really knowing where the packet ends? It is a binary protocol, mostly, so I'm kinda left without a clue as to where each packet ends. There are no 'packet' boundaries in TCP. If you need them you have to implement them yourself in your application protocol. Examples:
    - a length word prefix
    - a self-describing protocol such as XML.
Otherwise you need to do more with the byte-count returned by the read() method than just compare it with -1. In your code you should be passing it around with the ByteBuffer's array, or better still just the ByteBuffer, otherwise you don't know how much of the data is valid.
BTW closing a channel cancels all its SelectionKeys, you don't have to do that twice.
And you should only register for OP_WRITE when you have data to write. You have this back to front - you are waiting for data to write to arrive on the queue. The selector thread should only block in the select() method.
