Confusion about BT line

Hi all first post here.
We have just asked for a Sky box to be installed at home and they require a working BT line. We havn't used our BT line in years. It was because at the time our broadband speed was so slow that a BT engineer who called at the house had informed us that the way the line wass affixed to a bracket on the corner of the house was incorrect and needed replacing, it was chaffeing as the angle of the telephone wire was rubbing on the brick work.
At the time BT were contacted, I can't recal the amount of times they were called and in the end we got so fed up we moved to cable ( NTL at the time )
Now we have Sky coming round in a few weeks to connect up the BT line, how to we get it checked in advance so as not to delay anyone. We obviously would like BT to check the chaffing wire from the telegraph pole to ensure it is ok or if it needs re fixing.
I cannot find anywhere on the BT web site that we can call to querey this, anyone have a suggestion?
Kindest regards
Helen

Hi H232,
The external phone line to your property is maintained by Openreach on behalf of you and your ISP/CP.
If your not paying for the phone line (line rental, ect...) to your ISP/CP (excluding cable companies ) then the phone line will probably be deactivated and disconnected.
BT retail (a ISP/CP) can't do anything unless you have a phone package with them and are a BT Retail customer. If you are paying BT Retail for line rental and phone package then check if there is a dial tone and call 151 is the phone quality isn't good.
Even though Openreach is part of the BTplc Group, Openreach are completely separate and have to treat all ISPs/CPs equally.
If your not a BT Retail customer then you will need to take this up with your ISP/CP who uses the copper phone line infrastructure.
Cheers

  • Confused about command line syntax

    Why does (at the command prompt)
    java com.sisconet.mpeapi.MpeApiwork properly, and
    java -D . -classpath . com.sisconet.mpeapi.MpeApireturn the error:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: /I would think they would basically be equivalent, in fact, I thought I needed "-classpath ." to make it work. There is almost nothing in MpeApi.java, just a test file with some println statements.
    Thanks!

    java -D . -classpath . com.sisconet.mpeapi.MpeApiThis means: run the class called "." and pass it the parameters "-classpath . com.sisconet.mpeapi.MpeApi"Since there is no class called "." you get a NoClassDefFoundError.
    What is the "-D" supposed to do?

The next version of Oracle VM (3.1, most likely) will use the UEK2 which is currently in beta for Oracle Linux. Due to some amazing work by the Xen/Oracle VM developers, all the Xen components for Dom0 support have been merged into the mainline Linux kernel and the UEK2 will be the first kernel that uses the full mainline implementation of the Xen Dom0 support.

  • Confused about extending the Sprite class

    Howdy --
    I'm learning object oriented programming with ActionScript and am confused about the Sprite class and OO in general.
    My understanding is that the Sprite class allows you to group a set of objects together so that you can manipulate all of the objects simultaneously.
    I've been exploring the Open Flash Chart code and notice that the main class extends the Sprite class:
    public class Base extends Sprite {
    What does this enable you to do?
    Also, on a related note, how do I draw, say, a line once I've extended it?
    Without extending Sprite I could write:
    var graphContainer:Sprite = new Sprite();
    var newLine:Graphics = graphContainer.graphics;
    And it would work fine. Once I extend the Sprite class, I'm lost. How do I modify that code so that it still draws a line? I tried:
    var newLine:Graphics = this.graphics;
    My understanding is that since I'm extending the Sprite class, I should still be able to call its graphics method (or property? I have no idea). But, it yells at me, saying "1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: Graphics.

    Thanks -- that helped get rid of the error, I really appreciate it.
    Alas, I am still confused about the extended Sprite class.
    Here's my code so far. I want to draw an x-axis:
    package charts {
        import flash.display.Sprite;
        import flash.display.Graphics;
        public class Chart extends Sprite {
            // Attributes
            public var chartName:String;
            // Constructor
            public function Chart(width:Number, height:Number) {
                this.width = width;
                this.height = height;
            // Methods
            public function render() {
                drawAxis();
            public function drawAxis() {
                var newLine:Graphics = this.graphics;
                newLine.lineStyle(1, 0x000000);
                newLine.moveTo(0, 100);
                newLine.lineTo(100, 100);
    I instantiate Chart by saying var myChart:Chart = new Chart(); then I say myChart.render(); hoping that it will draw the axis, but nothing happens.
    I know I need the addChild method somewhere in here but I can't figure out where or what the parameter is, which goes back to my confusion regarding the extended Sprite class.
    I'll get this eventually =)

  • Confusion about Kodo and JCA

    Hi,
    I'm a bit confused about Kodo's Connection Architecture strategy. It is my understanding that
    PMF's can be built to use the connection architecture. Along this line, one would configure the
    ConnectionFactory or ConnectionFactoryName, and possibly the ConnectionFactory2 and
    ConnectionFactory2Name properties in a PMF. The result of the PMF implementation supporting the
    connection architecture is nice integration with the application servers in terms of security,
    transaction, and connection management. One can lookup in JNDI a reference to a Kodo PMF that
    supports datastore transactions or to another one that supports optimistic transactions or to
    another one that supports NTR, and with proper settings of the transactional properties and suitable
    application code, one's sesson bean will work.
    But from what I can see of Kodo's JDOPersistenceManagerFactory class, it, itself, implements the
    ManagedConnectionFactory interface, meaning, I think, that this class is resource adaptor. And that
    the part that confuses me. Why would Kodo be a resource adaptor? I thought it used a resource
    adaptor, which I think is the same thing as a connection factory.
    Anyway, I'm puzzled, and I'm hoping that someone could straighten me out.
    David Ezzio

    David-
    The fact that Kodo can integrate into an application server as a
    Resource Adaptor, and section 3.2.2 of the specification that says that
    the PersistentManagerFactory should be able to utilize a Resource
    Adaptor to obtain connections to the data store are two separate issues.
    We implement Kodo itself as a Resource Adaptor in order to provide ease
    of integration into recent application servers. Your confusion is
    understandable, since we do not actually yet support the use of Resource
    Adaptors as the Connection Factories as per section 3.2.2.
    Does that make sense?

    I also found good (?) information, or at least a clearly-explained article, here. After reading it, UVD appears as the AMD's counterpart of NVIDIA's VDPAU for video acceleration.
    What I'm not sure about, is:
    -  Does it support video acceleration? I'd like to offload video processing to the GPU, but am not sure if my card and the open-source drivers support it or not. Wikipedia's article about VDPAU states it comes from NVIDIA, but then it says it has an open-source implementation.
    -  What has gallium to do with it? What gallium drivers should I enable in mesa? And what about DRI drivers?
    I configured mesa as follows:
    ./configure --prefix=/usr \
    --sysconfdir=/etc \
    --with-dri-driverdir=/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri \
    --with-gallium-drivers=r600 \
    --with-dri-drivers=radeon \
    --with-llvm-shared-libs \
    --enable-gallium-llvm \
    --enable-egl \
    --enable-gallium-egl \
    --with-egl-platforms=x11,drm \
    --enable-shared-glapi \
    --enable-gbm \
    --enable-glx-tls \
    --enable-dri \
    --enable-glx \
    --enable-osmesa \
    --enable-texture-float \
    --enable-xa \
    --enable-vdpau
    Not sure if I missed something, though.
    I am very confused about how Linux manages graphics, and what all those layers are for. DRM, DRI, VDPAU, VA-API, gl, gl3, xv, xvmc... it's a mess!
    Thanks in advance.

    The feature matrix might help. The easy part to answer is that the 3D driver is split into two parts: DRM which is part of the kernel and DRI which is in userspace and comes from the mesa package.
    Xv is an Xserver extension supported by pretty much all drivers. Found in the DDX (xf86-video-*), it uses features of the card to speed up the display of video (but not decoding). It can either do this by using the "video overlay" or creating a shader.
    Now if you want to use Xv but also offload decoding to the card, you need a video acceleration API. The ones to choose from are XvMC, VA-API, VDAPU in increasing order of feature support. They were developed by Xorg, Intel, Nvidia respectively but anyone is free to implement them. I don't think it's correct to call UVD a counterpart of VDPAU. UVD is a bunch of registers on newer AMD cards. And if you sent bits to those registers in the right way, you can implement VDPAU.
    The other way to implement VDPAU (say if the documentation for UVD registers was not released) is to use gallium. There is a gallium state tracker which can still do it at the expense of being slower. It is a hack whereby you convert video frames to polygon textures and make the OpenGL part of the card think that it's calculating part of a 3D scene when really it's decoding video.

  • Confusion about TreeMap

    Hi,
    I'm currently studying for SCJP exam and am confused about the following code.
         public static void main(String[] args) {
         TreeMap myMap = new TreeMap();
         myMap.put("ab", 10);
         myMap.put("cd", 5);
         myMap.put("ca", 30);
         myMap.put("az",20);
         NavigableMap myMap2 = myMap.headMap("cd", true);
         myMap.put("bl",100);
         myMap.put("hi",100);
         myMap2.put("bi", 100);
         System.out.println(myMap.size() + " " + myMap2.size());
         }When I run it, it outputs 7 6.
    What I'm confused about is how when after the line NavigableMap myMap2 = myMap.headMap("cd", true);and values are being entered into the myMap object, that it is still possible for them to be entered in the NavigableMap object? Are the 2 entities not seen seperately? Is it to do with the "inclusive" field of the headMap method.
    The solution states that the myMap contains the objects "ab","cd","ca","az","b1","h1","bi"
    and myMap2 "ab","cd","ca","az","b1","bi".
    But how when adding key-value pairs do both objects (myMap,myMap2) get considered for putting into?
    Thanks.

    From the API:
    headMap
    public NavigableMap<K,V> headMap(K toKey,
    boolean inclusive)
    Description copied from interface: NavigableMap
    Returns a view of the portion of this map whose keys are less than (or equal to, if inclusive is true) toKey. The returned map is backed by this map, so changes in the returned map are reflected in this map, and vice-versa. The returned map >supports all optional map operations that this map supports. So myMap2 contains all the elements from myMap that are <= "cd" (which are all except "hi"), and changes in either map are reflected on both, as stated.

  • Confused about color vs. b/w photos for printing...and more

    I reading confusing things about exporting a PDF for printing with both color and black and white images used in the same document.
    If I export to PDF and do a soft-proof and it looks okay, is that sufficient? If so, what's confusing about that, since this is my first print project, which Simulation Profile do I use? Is there a chart somewhere that compares U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2 to let's say 80 lb Gloss book with Aqueous coating (C2S)?
    I don't know what any of this means. So, is there a good article on this site, elsewhere, or an online printer who can help a rookie like me ensure I end up with a decent product?
    UPrinting.com advertises a "Free Project Review" that includes the following:
    Our team will run your file through a 30-point inspection, covering technical issues including:
    Artwork dimensions
    Bleed setup
    Low resolution images
    Elements that are not within the safe zone
    Image clipping
    Font sizes
    Un-embedded fonts
    Folding setup
    Page scaling
    Line weights
    Proper text spacing (compressed/expanded)
    Narrow borders that are at risk of being cut
    Compliance with USPS Mailing Guidelines
    Bindery setup for multi-page artwork
    What should I do? Is this trustworthy as long as I get a contract proof? Is there a "Go To" online printer that everyone loves (not sure you can recommend that here) or should I seek out a local printer?
    I'm using CS4 and have a file that's (maybe) ready to go but am looking at a learning curve of days if not weeks if I have to figure it all out myself.
    Thanks everyone.
    Paul

    InDesign puts grayscale and B&W (bitmap mode) art on the Black plate, where it belongs, so if you soft proof using the CMYK profile for your expected output conditions your preview will be accurate for the grayscale and B&W images as they will appear in print. presuming your monitor is calibrated and profiled so that you can trust what you see.
    Aqueous coating is applied AFTER the printing to protect, and possible enhance the glossiness of, the page (but not all coatings are glossy). This is not the same thing as printing on coated paper, which has a glossy surface and high ink holdout (and improves detail reproduction and usually will geive better color). You should be using whatever profile the printer has specified.

  • Confused about conversation grouping Lion vs. Snow Leopard

    Hello All,
    I just upgraded. Literally just finished. I was checking out mail, and I am confused about how Mail 5 groups messages for conversations. In SL I had Mail group related messages as well, and it's a feature I really enjoy. Conversations just makes it that much better. But, I notice that Lion groups message differently than both SL and iOS. Now, it is no longer grouping emails that are all from various people but are part of the same thread. It is grouping multiple messages from the same sender, even if they have nothing to do with each other, or are only loosely connected.
    It used to be (and still is on my iPhone) for example, that all the emails eminating from a single thread topic on one of my class forums would all group together. They have the same subject line and formatting. It was heaven. Will there be no way of doing this?
    Also, now all the emails from the teacher of that class, regardless of the relevancy or subject line, group together in one conversation. It's annoying in a way, but I think I can get used to that. Does anyone know if these will be able to be changed in the future?
    Thanks

    As a Mac power user - LION IS A DISAPPOINTMENT
    Apple needs to seriously consider briniging back
      • SPACES: the capability to move up as well as down to access applications
         AND have applications stay in a desgnated space makes it much easier
         to run multiple applicatioins - especially in a multi-monitor environment
      • SAVE AS: Saving various versions of a file is difficult with Lion.
        If I want a 3 versions of a document - with different pictures, it takes too many "clicks" to accomplish
         this task.  LET ME CHOOSE HOW I STORE FILES
      • COPY COMMAND: Snow Leaopard allowed me to copy files to a storage device AND if the file
         was already written to the device - the option to NOT REPLACE the file existed.  This made it
         easy to backup work on a portable drive.
         LION ONLY has two options - copy all or make an addition copy of the file, causing storage bloat
    APPLE NEEDS TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDER PUTTING THESE FEATURES BACK INTO THEIR OS FOR THE BUSINESS AND POWER USER

  • Some confusion about 3D TV's and Syncing Glasses

    There has been some confusion about our ad from last week and the offer to sync the 3D glasses with your TV.
    We by no means intend to confuse our customers or offer fraudulent services.  The offer is new to our stores, and our own employees have been in training just this week.  Let me clarify the services included with the Samsung 3D TV offer that appears in this weekend’s insert. Geek Squad will:
    Set up and connect your TV + up to 5 components.
    Add internet connectable components to your existing wireless network.
    Make sure your 3D glasses work.
    Review and teach you how to use all of your new gear.
    We have some customers who aren’t quite sure how the 3D glasses work, or that the glasses automatically sync with their new 3D TVs.  So this informs them that they can depend on Geek Squad to answer their questions during installation and set-up. There is no additional charge for this – and the Geek Squad 3D installation and networking services are included in the total price of this offer.

    in web application, i'm using the @EJB in customer servlets.
    public class CustomerProcessServlet extends HttpServlet {
    @EJB
    private CustomersRemote customerBean;
    blah blah inject directly coming request field from jsp.
    }

    Hi all,
    I have an customersBean which is inherit from customersRemote and my problem is i' am little confuse about injecting the entity(customer).
    Where can you apply the EntityManagerFactory is it outside on EJB or Inside the EJB? means outside EJB is use the web application or java application. i have and example.
    this is inside on EJB...............
    public class CustomersBean implements com.savingsaccount.session.CustomersRemote {
    @PersistenceContext(unitName="SavingAccounts")
    EntityManagerFactory emf;
    EntityManager em;
    /** Creates a new instance of CustomersBean */
    public CustomersBean() {
    public void create(int id, String name, String address, String telno, String mobileno)
    try{
    //This is the entity.
    Customer _customer = new Customer();
    _customer.setId(id);
    _customer.setName(name.toString());
    _customer.setAddress(address.toString());
    _customer.setTelno(telno.toString());
    _customer.setMobileno(mobileno.toString());
    em = emf.createEntityManager();
    em.persist(_customer);
    emf.close();
    }catch(Exception ex){
    throw new EJBException(ex.toString());
    in web application, i'm using the @EJB in customer servlets.
    public class CustomerProcessServlet extends HttpServlet {
    @EJB
    private CustomersRemote customerBean;
    blah blah inject directly coming request field from jsp.
    }

  • Confused about logical table source

    Hi,
    I'm confused about logical table source(LTS), there are 'General', 'Column Mapping', 'Content' tabs in
    LTS, in General tab ,there are some information,like 'Map to there tables' and 'joins',
    just here, we have created relationships in physical layer and BMM layer, so I would like to ask what's the use of the 'joins' here?

    Hi Alpha,
    Valid query, when you establish a complex join it is always between a logical fact and dimension table.Consider a scenario,
    Example:w_person_dx is an extension table not directly joined to a fact but joins to a dimension w_person_d.
    When you model the person_d tables in BMM, you ll have a single logical table with w_person_d as source.If you have to pull columns from both w_person_d and w_person_dx tables in a report, you add dx table as inner join to persond table in the general tab.Now when you check your physical query, you can see the inner join fired between the two dimensions.
