Confusion about memory for Lion installation

I have Imac Intel core 2 duo 1gb, bought Snow Leopard and Lion for upgrade, now it say's you need 2 GB, was this mentioned on the site?

2GB is to low, Apple should be more honest here.
My late 2008 MacBook worked fine with Snow Leopard but became more or less unusable with Lion. Extremely slow and also very strange errors from applications that was related to low memory. I actually suspect bugs in Lion regarding memory management but more memory installed reduces the probability of suffering from those bugs.
I have upgraded to 4GB and now it's possible to use the computer, what a difference!
I'd say that 4GB is the minimum memory requirement for most users.

  • Confused about conversation grouping Lion vs. Snow Leopard

    Hello All,
    I just upgraded. Literally just finished. I was checking out mail, and I am confused about how Mail 5 groups messages for conversations. In SL I had Mail group related messages as well, and it's a feature I really enjoy. Conversations just makes it that much better. But, I notice that Lion groups message differently than both SL and iOS. Now, it is no longer grouping emails that are all from various people but are part of the same thread. It is grouping multiple messages from the same sender, even if they have nothing to do with each other, or are only loosely connected.
    It used to be (and still is on my iPhone) for example, that all the emails eminating from a single thread topic on one of my class forums would all group together. They have the same subject line and formatting. It was heaven. Will there be no way of doing this?
    Also, now all the emails from the teacher of that class, regardless of the relevancy or subject line, group together in one conversation. It's annoying in a way, but I think I can get used to that. Does anyone know if these will be able to be changed in the future?
    Thanks

    As a Mac power user - LION IS A DISAPPOINTMENT
    Apple needs to seriously consider briniging back
      • SPACES: the capability to move up as well as down to access applications
         AND have applications stay in a desgnated space makes it much easier
         to run multiple applicatioins - especially in a multi-monitor environment
      • SAVE AS: Saving various versions of a file is difficult with Lion.
        If I want a 3 versions of a document - with different pictures, it takes too many "clicks" to accomplish
         this task.  LET ME CHOOSE HOW I STORE FILES
      • COPY COMMAND: Snow Leaopard allowed me to copy files to a storage device AND if the file
         was already written to the device - the option to NOT REPLACE the file existed.  This made it
         easy to backup work on a portable drive.
         LION ONLY has two options - copy all or make an addition copy of the file, causing storage bloat
    APPLE NEEDS TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDER PUTTING THESE FEATURES BACK INTO THEIR OS FOR THE BUSINESS AND POWER USER

  • How do I increase memory for Lion install?

    When I try to install Lion, I get the following: "Mac OS X 10.7 requires at least 2 GB of memory." Any thoughts about what is going on?

    I bought my iMac in early 2007.  This is info from Hardware Overview:
    Hardware Overview:

  • Confused about Office for Mac editions...

    I'm about to pull the plug and order Office 2004 for Mac. A few internet sites offer the following progams...
    Office 2004 for Mac Home & Student Edition
    Others don't offer this edition, but do offer...
    Office 2004 for Teachers and Student Edition
    The latter edition is a couple of dollars less and MORE available from places I usually shop. I'm really pointing toward taking advantage of MS free upgrade to Office 2008 Special Media Edition. Does anyone know if there is some hoop I have to jump through if I buy the "Teacher" edition? It looks to me that they are the same thing. What I DON'T want to happen is for MS to tell me I'm not eligible for the free upgrade to the '08 edition because I'm not a teacher or a student (except of life.)

    You may be right that there is no 2004 "Home"' Office edition available for sale although as I pointed out, there are web stores selling what they claim is this edition.
    At the site below, you can pre-order the 2008 "Home" edition for around $130. The box showed clearly states that it is the "Home" edition. I'm still confused, but I guess I'll just order the Amazon edition and be done with it. When I bought my MacBook late last month, the store was selling what they said was the 2004 Office version for $150 and at the time, they claimed that I would get a free update in early January when the new version came out. I would rather get the free full "super" 2008 edition upgrade when it is available, but I don't want to get into "no-man's" land if I have the so-called "Teachers-Student" and MS says no because I'm not a teacher or a student.

  • Question about contents of Lion Installer...

    I created a Lion bootable installer by installing the file InstallESD.dmg onto a DVD and
    it works ( I found out the hard way, Lion OS became corrupted and would not boot).
    The InstallESD.dmg is found in the SharedSuppoort folder in the Installer bundle,
    1) What the heck does 'InstallESD' stand for it seems to be a peculiar name
    2) In the same folder there is a file named OSInstall,mpkg.  What is its purpose?
         the InstallESD.dmg seems be be able to do the whole install without any other files.
    I don't have a way to view *mpkg files....
    Enquiring minds want to know
    Jerry

    "InstallESD" is named as such because that's the name somebody in Apple chose. The function of OSinstall.mpkg doesn't matter.
    You (and many of us ) are delving into areas into which Apple did not intend us to go.  Keep exploring, and you will find several thousand files with inexplicable names. Way below the level at which the user operates, it is not necessary to make file names nice and self-explanatory.

  • Confusion:  Maximum memory for Model 7.1 iMac, Mid-2007

    My iMac is maxed out with 4GB RAM, but when I was looking at specs for my son's computer on everymac.com, i got a surprise.  Although I almost never click on ad links, there was one that got me curious.  Below is what caught my eye:
    The iMac Model 7,1 takes DDR-667Mhz RAM and has a system maximum of 6GB
    with the installation of one 2GB module and one 4GB module.
    I've never read anything, from any source, that says that this iMac can take more than 4GB RAM...2GB in each bay.  I've long bought my RAM from Crucial, and the quote above was from another company, whom I shall not name.
    What say you all?  It would be nice to think that this (aging) computer could be sped up with 2GB more RAM, but I am mighty suspicious.
    Thanks for any comments.
    RB

    Hello again, Ruth,
    Happy to have helped; thank you for the star.
    Where are you located?    Sometimes you can get an allowance when you return RAM.  Just because you usually deal with Crucial usually doesn't mean to say you cannot switch to OWC.   Call and ask them, they have a one to one phone line in most countries.
    Here are details of how to install memory in Macs.
    iMac: How to remove or install memory

  • Iphone: Confused about memory managment in HelloWorld

    In the HelloWorld example you can find the following code:
    MyViewController *aViewController = [[MyViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"ControllerView" bundle:[NSBundle mainBundle]];
    self.myViewController = aViewController;
    [aViewController release];
    The myViewController is released in the dealloc method.
    I dont see why I need to declare and assign the temporary "aViewController" just to assign it to the instance variable. Wouldn't it be enough to write:
    self.myViewController = [[MyViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"ControllerView" bundle:[NSBundle mainBundle]];
    As I see it, myViewConroller will keep a reference to the object, and it will be released once the dealloc method is invoked.

    The property "myViewController" most probably has been declared as such:
    @property (nonatomic, retain) MyViewController* myViewController;
    This means that every time something is assigned to it, the ref-count for that object is incremented (as 'retain' is called).
    So, if you were to do this:
    self.myViewController = [[MyViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"ControllerView" bundle:[NSBundle mainBundle]];
    You would be incrementing the ref-count for the newly allocated object and the object will then have a refcount of 2 (as by default 'alloc' sets ref-count to 1). Now, even if myViewController is released in dealloc, it will only decrement the count to '1' from '2'; this results in a memory leak.
    So the golden rule is, *every time* you do an 'alloc' or 'copy' it is your responsibility to 'release' that object. And for this reason you see it being assigned and then being released again. This is what happens:
    MyViewController *aViewController = [[MyViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"ControllerView" bundle:[NSBundle mainBundle]];
    Ref Count for aViewController is 1
    self.myViewController = aViewController;
    Ref Count for aViewController is 2 (as self.myViewController does a retain on it)
    [aViewController release];
    Ref count for aViewController is now 1
    Later when myViewController is released, ref-count of the object pointed by 'aViewController' or 'myViewController' is then set to 0 and at that point it's released from memory.

  • Confused about eligibility for upgrade for iphone 6?

    So I am on a family plan, and have had my iphone 4 for almost 3 1/2 years now. We were looking to upgrade to new iphone 6 but then my dad said that they make you pay for your phone now, but I think that is for at&t next. Anyways, we are looking in to it again and now at&t has said that we are not eligible anymore for a phone at all? We are very frustrated and confused.e have waited over 2 years and how are we not eligible? Does not make sense. I was wondering for one 1. Is there still a 2 year contract plan where you can an iphone 6 for free or at a reduced price? 2. Why would we not be eligible anymore? Thanks I could use some help

    We have always paid for our phones. The cost of phones in the past was paid in part by the deposit we paid up front and the rest was included in a high line fee.
    2 year contracts have been discontinued in favor of the Next installment plan. You may still be able to upgrade with a 2 year contract, but only with ATT online and your phone will be mailed to you.
    For customers on the Mobile share value plan, the line fee if you enter a new 2 year contract is $40. In addition an upgrade fee of $40 and a deposit of $199-399 depending on which storage option for the iPhone 6.
    Customers who use Next have a discounted line fee of $25 or $15. Plus the installment on the phone.
    If you crunch the numbers you pay more on a 2 year contract than with Next.

  • Hi, I am confused about memory in my Mac.

    I am new to MACs and have  Mac book pro with 4Gb of storage.
    My iphoto often causes my mac to run v slowly so I was trying to see if I've got too many photos.
    When I look at the size of the iphoto library via the Finder it shows as nearly 30gb. How on earth is this possible? I have some stuff on photostream but not much.
    Any advice on this would be really appreciated.
    thanks

    You have 4GB of Random Access Memory (RAM) not 4GB of storage - to see how much space you're using, go to the Finder and highlight your hard drive and select "Get Info" from the Finder's File menu. You should see something like this:
    This will show you the capacity of your hard drive, and how much sapce you've in use as well as the 'free' space.
    It's not unusual for iPhoto libraries to become large, if you've a lot of high-res photos in it. If you feel that the Library itself is damaged, and shouldn't be using that much space, you might want to check with the experts over on the iPhoto forum. I don't use iPhoto much, but that's where the real iPhoto experts hang out.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Are you confused about accessing the Lion iTunes Get Info menu from mouse?

    I was...for some reason Lion was shipped with the right click (secondary) turned off, which is how you access the Get info Menu in iTunes from the mouse. So just go into Apple menu choose system preferences. Choose mouse and check the secondary click box. Then you are good to go back into iTunes choose a song and right click to get the Get info menu...

    This has nothing to do with iTunes.
    It is the OS System prefs.

  • Need info about memory for Satellite A305D-S6848

    I'm looking to upgrade my system memory from 3GB to 4GB.  I am not able to find the required specs anywhere, including in the product's supposed "detailed specifications", where the memory description is woefully inadequate.  It doesn't even specify that it needs SODIMM!  How can I find out the exact specs that I need?
    I'm also curious if faster memory (such as PC2-6400) will work, but just run at the system's 5300 speed?

    Toshiba's memory finder yields these two 2-GB modules.

    I dont htink this will be possible. You cant run an os of that size off a usb. bootcamp works when your mac harddrive is partitioned with windows on one and os x on the main drive.

  • HT4929 Confused about consequences for mixed computers ?

    If i have compatible and non compatible computers in a mixed environment, and if i choose to fully go to iCloud, is my email then usable on both compatible and non compatible computers ?
    You know....Apple offer a "fully transfer" or "just keeping mail".....

    if i choose to fully go to iCloud
    You can't go any way other than fully - if you have MobileMe then migrating is a one-time process.
    Data on iCloud is held on the server and access there from the various computers and devices - think of it as being like webmail, then it makes sense.
    Lion 10.7.2 and above can access all iCloud's facilities. Snow Leopard can access email if set up manually, and possibly calendars via an unsupported hack.
    Leopard and Tiger can access mail but no other facilities.

  • How do I get out of kernel panic?  kernel panic upon boot.  I did that hard drive cleanup and reinstalled Lion.  What about memory?  Anyone think I need to upgrade my memory?  I have 8gig.

    I get kernel paic upon boot.  I did that hard drive cleanup and reinstalled Lion.  What about memory?  Anyone think I need to upgrade my memory?  I have 8 G of upgraded RAM. (20 inch iMac core 2 duo)

    If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
    If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
    Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
    Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
    During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.

  • Installation of airport 5.6 for Lion failing

    When I try to install airport 5.6 for Lion the final installation always fails... I have no clue why.
    It just says for me to contact the supplier of the software which is clearly apple. Any ideas?

    Apple will not let you install AirPort Utility 5.6 on Lion 10.7.5.  I believe it only works up through version 10.7.2.
    If you need AirPort Utility 5.6, there is a workaround....not supported by Apple....that will probably allow you to manually install the 5.6 application once it is extracted from the download package.
    Forum expert Tesserax has details about this in this thread:
