Confusion regarding bleed/slug etc.

Hi there,
I'm currently attempting to set up a document which will be printed and professionally bound.
Scans of my images will be placed in the document along with text, shapes ect.
The binders informed me that for the A5 document (A4 pages halfed lengthways when bound) I need to set a "3-5mm bleed all around" and "25mm from gutter".
Does that mean i set the gutter at 25mm and bleed at 5mm?
Do i need to check what they need for margins and slug? They never mentioned those..
And finally, I need to set a fold line directly down the middle of the A4 page - how would I go about doing that?
Any response is greatly appreciated!
Thanks

OK, so  I THINK I understand what yo are doing. Pages "1" and "2" will be printed in the same side of one sheet, the other side will be blank. 3 & 4 will go on the next sheet, and so forth. The sheets will get printed, die cut, and folded, then assembled into a book block for binding (almost certainly glued, not stitched) using the loose edges in the binding.
If that's correct, then I might set up as A4 non-facing pages since the back of all sheets will be blank and normal imposition is not possible, and on each page I would make two columns to represent the two pages that will be on that "leaf" in the book. Set the bleed top and bottom at the 3-5 mm, and left and right at the larger dimension as hese are the edges that will wind up being in the grind-off area for binding (what I presume the printer is calling the gutter). For the gutter between columns, use twice the value of what would be the outside margin on a regular book  because when folded iin half that gutter becomes the outside page margin. Set the top and bottom margins to whatever you like, and left and right will be what would normally be the margin at the spine area, so I would make them a little larger. You can add a vrtical guide at the centerline for reference on the master page. Objects that bleed to the outside of the finished book should extend exactly to that line, not beyond.
The tricky part is if there will be objects that need to cross over adjacent spreads of the finished book. For those cases you could try setting the pages not to shuffle and drag two pages together in the Pages panel so you are looking at what is essentially a four-page spread.
A different approach would be to set up as A5 facing pages, do the entire layout as if this were a "normal" book, then place those pages side-by-side into a new A4 document. This would allow you to use automatic page numbering, if you want it, and would make crossovers much easier.

  • Tabloid Newspaper in InDesign - Bleeds, sizing, etc.

    Hi Guys,
I have a lot of experience doing magazines and the lot in InDesign, where artwork goes to the edge of the paper.
I've been tasked with the tabloid-size redesign of a regional broadsheet newspaper.
I will have the newspaper's in-house design team to back me up soon, but I want to get a head start, and I'm a bit baffled.
Wikipedia and various other sources set the page size at  430 × 280 mm (16.9 in × 11.0 in), which is the size of the double spread (so two pages across). I would be inclined to half the width at 215 mm and put each page size in at 215 × 280 mm. (This would be done as 'facing' pages.) Is this the wrong way to do it? Should I put the full 430 × 280 mm in as the page size?
I know it sounds ridiculous, but I've had a measure of other compact/tabloid size newspapers (with a ruler), and they all seem to be much bigger than those sizes. I presume that's because newspaper printing isn't and doesn't need to be very accurate. Is this correct?
If so, what bleeds should I put in for the document? I would be inclined to say 20 mm since printing seems so inaccurate, but this seems way too big. And should these be added using the File > Document Setup window? This seems to add on to the overall width. Is this OK?
I'm sorry for all the questions, and I know I seem ridiculously inexperienced at this lark, but trust me, I'm a quick learner!
    All responses are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ed.
[I'm based in Ireland so all sizes are UK/Ireland standard, and I'm using InDesign CS5]

    Thanks for your help Peter.
With regards to the cutting apart – how much of a safe-zone should I give myself so that the wrong parts don't get cut apart?
I'm very, very baffled with regards to the sizing of the tabloid. The design team do not know; I am the person tasked with deciding the size (Berliner is being considered), as they currently are a broadsheet newspaper.
The sizes given across the web are 17 (width) x 11 (height). If that is considered the page size, then it would be a very awkward newspaper! Obviously wider than it is tall.
If we are to revert it, as you did, so that it is 11 x 17, we get something that is reasonably OK, but it is simply not the right size, and is out of proportion compared to tabloids.
The thing is, if we half the the 17 x 11, so that it is 8.5 (width) x 11 (height), the proportions look perfect, as with tabloids. Is it possible that newspaper sizes are discussed regarding spreads, and not the actual individual pages? It's not the way I'm used to and you don't seem to be either, but maybe?
As far as I know, UK tabloid and US tabloid sizes are different, so that may be leading to some confusion.
    Thanks for your help...

Am using BPM to merge the input files into a single target file.
am confused as to which interfaces to use in interface mapping.
(have 3 abstract ,and 2 outbound and 1 inbound interfaces).

  • Confused Regarding SAP XI Pre requiste

    Hi all,
Many of the threads has all the information that ......particularly sravya blog.....all says ...that SAP XI has no pre requiste.........
am still not able to understand that ..what are the concets we need in ABAP or java exactly if we want to enter into this field.
I apologize if am asking a regular question......As i was confused and am not able to decide which i have to learn before going to start my career in SAP XI.. and also i have knowledge on basic concepts of SAP ..please help me out how to start .please explain me in detail..please don't give links..i confused by all the blogs..please explain me....in details....sorry if i troubles u all....
    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi Swathi,
First of all, Welcome to XI
Let me try to explain you in detail:
    Q. Why Java and ABAP?
Ans. XI (now PI) is built on Java and ABAP stack, so knowledge of both will help you immensely to understand the working, tracing the error and building scenarios.
Like, for example XI's Integration Server (i.e. XI as a system) has three major components inside it, namely Adapter Engine (Based on Java), ccBPM engine (ABAP stack) and Integration Engine (Both ABAP and Java Stack)
    Q. Is there any area where we would not need the knowledge on Java or ABAP?
Ans. While Designing message mappings, exposing Webservices, designing ccBPM scenarios, what you will need is a good knowledge of SOAP, XSDs, XML, WSDL, XSLT etc, i.e. you need to have a feel of open standards to understand how XI works and where it is placed architecturally.
    Q. Where do I need Java knowledge the most?
Ans. As I am unaware of your technological background, let me assume that you know nothing of SAP.
So, if you have a descent knowledge and exposure of Java, it would help you to:
           a) Understand and resolve errors and issues in XI (mainly based on Java)
           b) Enhance the capabilities of Adapters (nothing but complex java programs)
           c) Enhancing Message Mappings (by writing Java based 'user defined functions')
           d) Writing mapping programs exclusively in Java (Java message mapping)
           e) Writing Java code to connect to any Java application (known as Java Proxies)
    Q. Where do I need ABAP knowledge the most?
Ans. XI or PI is a middleware, i.e. it interacts with applications or systems at both the ends. Primarily one of the end (back end) is SAP R/3 or ECC (advance version of SAP R/3) box. Here your knowledge in ABAP comes handy. Communication between XI and SAP takes place using core SAP technologies or formats like IDoc, RFCs or plain ABAP code (known as proxies).
Also you need to have an average knowledge of SAP ABAP (Advance Business Application Programming Language), a 4th generation language to be able to trace erros and build customized programs in SAP environment.
I hope, this would help you.
Please free to throw any doubts you still have
As you seem to be a new bie, please award points if you find this information useful.
    Thanks,
    Varun

  • InDesign Cs4 Bleed/Slug not scaling with reduced print?

Maybe I'm crazy, but I feel certain that when I've printed my layouts in the past, Indesign scaled the bleed and slug along with the rest of the page when I printed at a reduced size.
Today, I can't get the bleed or the slug to output in relative scale to the document. i.e. a 20" x 32" poster with 1/8" bleeds and a 2 inch slug on top is being printed at 50%. In the Print preview box, it shows that while the page is being reduced properly to 10" x 16", the bleed is still 1/8" and the slug is still 2 inches, not 1/16" and 1" as I would have expected.
    o

Sorry, miskeyed and hit the return key before I finished my thoughts:
Am I wrong in thinking that InDesign usually scales bleed and slug with the page? Am I mis-remembering?
If not, what is causing the odd non-scaling of bleed and slug?

  • Confusion regarding Binary data and byte arrays

    HI guys,
I have a question...i am going to send some binary data...the format of that data is that first two bytes is the lenght of the data and then follows that data. Here i have one confusion. e.g. i want to say that the lenght of my data is 1000 bytes. How do i do it.
coz if i do something like this.
int k = 1000;//the length of my data
    String binaryString = Integer.toBinaryString(k);
    byte[] binaryData = binaryString.getBytes();
and then if i say binaryData.lenght, i see a lenght of 10, as the binary string which
is generated is -> 1111101000. i guess its obivious as this byte array is nothing but perhaps a character array with each character occupying one thread...so what exactly is the difference between byte array and binary data. and in the above said condition how do i send the binary data?
Also adding to my confusion is the fact that i have a file which contains binary data, but that data is not 10010101 type of data...its just some absurd characters. How do we explain this.
i would be highly grateful if you could explain me the solution to this problem.
I am not getting as to how to go about it.
    its urgent..pls help...

one sec..actually i dont want to 'read' the two bytes. That i know how to do? but The thing is that i want to write a binary stream. right? so in that the first two bytes should be the size of the data, followed by the data itself. So i want to write the first two bytes, which should contain the size of data (as a matter of fact i have that binary data in a byte array). But my question is , that if i say the size of data is 1000 (bytes , since, as i said i am gettting the data as a byte array), how do i write this in my binary stream as 1000 in this case would be an int. right? which is four bytes. So essentially that byte array (which contains binary data) i have to forward to somewhere, say X , but X reads binary data in the following way...it expects the first two bytes to give him info regarding the size of the data to follow and then it starts reading the data from the third byte onwards till the size of the data (which it got by reading first two bytes)...i hope i could communicate my confusion better this time

  • Confused regarding static methods

    Hello guys,
I like to know the only purpose of static method is to call a method with out creating
    instance of that class.
I am totaly confused why and where to use static methods.
    Thanks in advance
    aneesh

Look at the API docs for some of the static methods in classes like java.lang.String, java.lang.Integer, java.lang.Thread, etc.
An object--an instance of a class--has state and behavior. The state is captured in the instance variables--the array that holds the characters of a String, the name, SS#, and hireDate fields of an Employee object, etc.
Static methods are used when the operation you're performing isn't associated with any particular instance of that class--it doesn't use or modify the state of a particular object. The operation is associated with the class as a whole.
For instance, Integer.parseInt(String). You're not operating on an existing Integer object. Rather you're creating a new Integer from a String. It's a utility or "helper" method of the Integer class.
And yes, do read the tutorial.

  • Confused by Bleed for Commercial Output?

I am working on a 8.5 x 11 sized catalog with full bleed. My page settings in indesign CS4 show .125 bleed on all four sizes. My commercial printer wants me to print to postscript and distill from there. They do not want me to uncheck use bleed settings inside indesign before export. Should the page going into distiller export at 8.5 x 11 or at another size allowing for the bleed? (8.75 x 11.25?)Is this correct. Inside distiller I should change the page size to this as well? Appreciate any help as I am somewhat confused about this process and want to keep thngs working properly.
    Rob

robert, ID print menu > Setup > Paper Size: Custom: 8.75W H11.25, then in Marks and Bleeds, set .125" for all: Top, Bottom, Inside, Outside. Print postscript and then distill, resulting PDF will be 8.75 x 11.25.
You need to set these page parameters in the application that is creating the postscript, not in Distiller.

  • Question regarding bleeding and facing pages.

    Hello,
i'm in trouble with my first InDesign document which is a 96 pages Magazine. It will be printed on A3 sheets stapled in the middle. My printing guy said that it's ok as A4 pages with 3mm bleed.
So now when i'm trying to export as a printed pdf (i check mark that i want to use the documents bleeding settings) it exports with sections from left and right depending on the pages (the left page exports with ?? i guess 3 mm ?? bleed from the right page and so on). If i override the bleeding settings and i set it to 0mm it all ok but i fear that some pictures or text might get cut off since i have all planned with the bleed markers in indesign.
And i can't uncheck the facing pages since i have some graphics (charts and so on) that spread from one page to another (on same spread).
My question is ... is there anything i can do and still use bleeds or (ignore "inside bleeds" or something) or is it ok to use the export as spreadsheet instead of individual pages since he wanted A4 pages?
Any help for a newbie would be appreciated. Thank you.

You should ask the printers to use PUR (polyurethane reactive) Bind when making a perfect bound book - that's a much stronger glue than EVA. It won't even break apart or fall apart going from freezing cold (out in the car over night) to being warmed up, which happens with EVA binding. But the PUR bind seems to be a lot more popular and stronger.
Failing that, getting the book threadsewn also helps to keep pages together. If you have a large print run and need these to last, then I suggest perfect binding them with a threadsewn finish.
I've definitely seen and done 96pp saddle stitched (well personally I have imposed, printed and delivered these). You might have to sacrafice a drop in weight on the body text. It can get ugly, but it's definitely doable.
My suggestion here would be to ask the printers for a similiar 96pp saddle stitch sample that they've done before, to make sure you're happy with it.
In fact, you can ask them to send you out a dummy (a blank version of the book trimmed and folded) to make sure you're happy with it.
It really is disppointing to get a printed job back from the printers and you discover you are not happy with the binding method.

  • I am now REALLY confused regarding cookies

In another thread John Cornicello wrote:
    >Yes, adobeforums.com has a permanent cookie available. But it is disabled at the moment because everyone who wants to have their message history preserved in the new system later this year needs to log out and log back in to get the prompt to associate their current Adobeforums account with their Adobe account.
The statement regarding the expiration of cookies is certainly true on my MacPro running OS X (10.5.6) and Safari (3.2.1).
However...This morning I decided to go to the Lightroom forum from my iPhone. Guess what? I was STILL logged in as Bob Peters. I rebooted the iPHone and I was still logged in. I then powered down and booted the iPhone and...I was STILL logged in as Bob Peters.
So, I booted my laptop and went to the Lightroo, forum. You guessed it, I was STILL logged in when using the laptop.
I then went to my wife's iMac and found that I'm still logged on on that machine!
What the heck is going on? I'm starting to get the feeling that the Web Wizards have corrupted the cookies. Is that possible?

No. your not wasted effort you admitted (collectively) that you tried to design the Webx Forum System to look like The Macromedia side.
Whether it was a port of this system to look like the Macromedia System, or a direct port over to the Macromedia system. That what people didn't like if they could even get in. That was the system I was referring to.
That was when we had the cookie problem.
Question: some one that smart than I (I am sure everyone else on this Forum is) explain why the cookie system has to be touched in the first place?
when you go to a new window style That shouldn't affect cookies to be gin with.

  • Still Confused with Previews, Thumbnails etc.

    Hi All,
So i'm very new to Aperture, and that business about JPEG previews and thumbnails still has me thoroughly confused. So i understand that when you are shooting RAW, when you hit the play button, what you see in the rear screen is the JPEG preview. So when you first view your photos on a computer without importing, is this the same preview? When you then double click onto the photo again without importing, is this the RAW or the JPEG? After importing, without clicking, are you seeing the same JPEG preview or a completely new thumbnail?
I know if you then double click a photo, Aperture processes the photo into actual RAW file. Thing is, this file is very different to the JPEG preview, the photo you saw on the rear screen of your camera. Some are even cropped substantially so that you lose some sky or part of a building. Is this normal? Is there then a way to retain or revert to the JPEG preview you preferred?
    Many thanks,

So i understand that when you are shooting RAW, when you hit the play button, what you see in the rear screen is the JPEG preview.
Because the word preview has a paerticular meaning in Aperture (See below) I'll say, yes that's correct but what you see is a Jpeg Version of the photo. In other words, the camera has processed the Raw and applied various fixes and filters and that's what it shows you.
So when you first view your photos on a computer without importing, is this the same preview?
Yes, to save time Aperture will try read that version rather than generate one of its own.
When you then double click onto the photo again without importing, is this the RAW or the JPEG?
What app are you viewing it with now? Aperture? Something else?
After importing, without clicking, are you seeing the same JPEG preview or a completely new thumbnail?
Depends on what you have chosen in the Aperture -> preferences -> Importing pane.
I know if you then double click a photo, Aperture processes the photo into actual RAW file.
No it doesn't, and it's a really big distinction. Aperture processes nothing. When you view a photo Aperture is just  showing you the Raw -  the unprocessed image that the camera version is based on.
If the camera is cropping and radically altering the image from the raw to the jpeg then I think you need to look at the camera settings. I can't think why a camera would choose to crop a photo when processing it.

  • Confused regarding .VOB, .BUP, and .IFO files

I am a renowned impulse shopper (for example, I went researching new computers and came home with an iMac 1 day later with no clue how to work it), and I have been reading these discussion pages constantly for the past week. I do not want to go buying unfamiliar stuff to accomplish my goal without getting some advice, based just on what I have gleaned from the discussions. I hope this is ok.
My goal is to convert my home VHS videos into an editable format within iMovie 08 so that I can edit, then burn them to DVD. Here is what I have so far...I really hope you can provide some advice as to whether I am on the right track?
For using my VHS player, I was advised to use Dazzle (or Video Capture for Mac), but the website says it converts into MPEG-4. I have read that this is the lesser quality compared to MPEG-2 so I am not sure if there is better equipment or will this be fine? Before being told about Dazzle, I was looking for a cheap DVR that would connect to my computer.
For the VHS that I have already had Wal-Mart convert to DVD, I have tried to copy them onto my hard drive but they are in a VIDEO_TS folder filled with .VOB, .BUP, and .IFO files. Naturally, I cannot play those files. I read that MPEG Streamclip and iSquint are popular tools for these files, but I must admit to feeling idiotic when reading more about them. I do not know what would be best for my project.
Thanks so much for any advice and guidance on this very confusing topic. I simply want to understand and buy what I need the first time to achieve my goals using my nice, new shiny iMac!

My suggestion would be to convert to DV for editing, mpeg2 and h264 are both compressed and are not generally a first choice for editing purposes, h264 is much more efficient than mpeg2, so of the two would I believe be the better option regardless of the fact that you couldn't use mpeg2 with imovie anyway.
To convert VHS you will need some form of capture hardware such as a stand alone device or a PCI card although if you know someone with a miniDV camera with pass through capability you could also use that.
As for those DVD's you got done at wal-mart, I don't know if they offer it as a service but you would be better getting them as data DVD's with DV files on them rather than DVD format. For those that you already have mpegstreamclip would be my tool of choice, again converting them to DV.
