Confusion with new GarageBand specs....

I use Logic to record-
Always interested in using garageband for basic recording/voiceovers, but because of the maximum standard cd quality settings (44Khz/16bit; normally record almost all audio in 96/24 in other apps) being the highest in GarageBand, it has turned me away.
Now garageband records in 24 bit, but what sampling rate? 44, 48, 96?
all new Macs feature a 96khz/24bit input/output soundcard, will it be used to the fullest?
Thanks

>wonder why they didn't use anything higher
Garageband is intended for beginners. No offense to the people with years experience with GB (like myself) but GB is limited for many many reasons. The first and foremost is money, which I'll get to in a minute...the second is that beginners in the world of recording have no idea what 16 bit and 44.1 kHz even means, much less having options to use them to confuse the cr@p out of them. Don't expect GB to get to much more complicated. Maybe a nifty feature here and there, or some less exciting ones (like Magic GB, podcasting--personal taste) but the overall functionality will always be way behind Logic Express and especially Logic Pro.
That brings me to the money side of things. Garageband is great. It's also something like $17 when one divides the number of apps into the price of iLife. But again it is extremely limited. Apple created Garageband so people would become interested in producing music, much like iMovie makes people interested in making movies. Then when they have the hang of it and start to feel limited they go looking to the more pro applications, like Logic and Final Cut. Both of those "Pro" titles have an "Express" version. So if someone buys iLife, then later buys LP or FC Express, and again feels limited, then buys LP or FC Pro, that one person has spent well over $1,000 to get there. Plus there is Apple's added bonus of selling the only machines that all of these sweet programs work on....

  • Help with new garageband

i made more than 100 songs using the previous garageband and now i have this new mac mini with maverick ios i get into garageband and i notice i dont have the old instruments idk what to do because almost all of my songs have at least one of those old sounds. so how to i get them ? ik they should be in legacy but when i click on them nothing pops up for the instruments catagory how do i get them sounds

I'm trying to export a file to iTunes (it's about 3 hours long) and I didn't see an option to make a podcast on the new Garageband so I just went ahead so make a regular audio file.
The podcast option has been discontinued in GarageBand 10.0, sorry.
When I clicked on Share and tried to export it to iTunes, it said, "The bounce file exceeds the maximum file size (AIFF 2 GB; WAV 4 GB). Please change the format to CAF or decrease the bounce range.
The CAF option is not available in GarageBand, only in Logic. So this error message is buggy, ignore it.
But the file size limits do apply. If you want to export a 3 hours song, don't export as WAV or AIFF, export in a compressed format. Try to share with medium or low quality:
Or try to share your song in separate sections of less than an hour, that do not exceed the file size limit, if you need the maximal quality.

  • How does my MacPro compare with new iMacs spec wise?

I'm thinking of upgrading to a new iMac, I have a MacPro that is about 5-yrs old. Just curious, how do the specs on my MacPro compare with the specs available on the new iMacs? Will I notice a big difference in performance, OR are the upgrade processors and graphics card only going to result in minor performance increases?
    Model Name:   Mac Pro
    Model Identifier:     MacPro1,1
    Processor Name:       Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed:      3 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores:        4
L2 Cache (per processor):     4 MB
    Memory:       3 GB
    Bus Speed:    1.33 GHz
    Thanks!

I *think* you'll see a speed increase. You'll have more ram to start with, a faster bus, a faster graphics card, (i think) and on top of all of that a nicer screen, you'll be able to sell the mac pro to offset the cost, a bigger hard drive(probably) a new warranty.....and on and on. See why I say it's not so cut and dried?

I have a new mac book pro. Will my old jam packs work with the new garageband?

I have same problem, been using a macbook 13" for nearly 9 years but it was failing so I bought a macbook pro 15" and after having problems and error messages when trying to download loops ( I finally went to the App Store and opened garageband from there which install some loops), it finally downloaded some but not all the loops that my jam packs had, also I have tons of non-apple loops that I purchased over the years but I want to know if they will work on my new mac ?

  • New bug in 8.02 - regions confused with each other

So, I just updated to 8.02, and loaded up a recent project that was half finished (bad idea).
Now I have some strange bugs going on that I never had before, and they are basic issues.
My audio regions keep getting confused with each other.
I have an audio region that I can't open in the sample editor. When I double click on it, the sample editor will bring up the last region I edited, not the new one. I've re-named the region, deleted it and re-added it to the arrange window, but this region will not open in the sample editor.
I can see it in my media bin, and preview it there, and it plays in my arrangement no problem, but I can't get it to open in the sample editor. In fact sometimes when I click on it, with the media window open, I can see another sample being 'selected' in the media window instead of the proper audio region.

finally i find someone else with the same prob, o already post into apple.com too
yes here the same, bug new in 8.0.1, cause on logic 8.0.0 all works fine (except some click noise when you pre-listen a file in autoloop)
however here what i can say to you (it's 3 days i'm studyng this cause i make a massive use of ultrabeat)
    - no matter both power pc / intel soffer of this bug
    - i try to update to leopard from my 10.4.11 (same bug) tryin a new os installation (same bug), tryn without audio card and driver (same bug)
so i really don't know how to solve it, cause there are only few people that have this problem

  • How to use track effects with new version of GarageBand

In the version of GarageBand before this one, you could access different effects that you could manage and apply to the different tracks.  Each track had an area containing its set of effects that were either activated or deactivated.  With this removed, i am not sure how to add those same kind of effects.  I am aware of the new nobs that are provided in order to mix and edit trebles, bass, mid, etc., but i want to be able to add different effects such as voice transformer, flanger, chorus, speech enhancer, bit crusher, bass amp, track echo, track reverb, amplifier, etc.  I desperately need help finding out how to do this, as this was a major part of my mixing and producing with GarageBand, and without these given effects, i do not feel as comfortable using GarageBand.

I've never heard of CAF before and when I typed it in Help, it came up with no results. Does anybody know how I can fix this?
I even tried copying and pasting some of the audio files from my Garageband project into another one but it won't let me open two projects at the same time. I'm perfectly fine with making multiple projects in order to reduce the size and the time of the file but I don't know how or if it's even possible to save all the clips I recorded. I really don't want to lose my hard work and I need to get this project onto my iPod.

What is your current GarageBand version?
Your profile signature says "OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)", but the newest GarageBand, version 10.0.2, requires Mavericks.  Are you planning on upgrading from Mt. Lion to Mavericks?
The newest GarageBand 10.0.2 is very different from the earlier GarageBand '11, version 6.0.5.
Some features, like podcasts, are missing. The GUI layout is more like Logic than GarageBand, the effects can no longer be combined freely, but you have to use the predefined patches. But this version adds nice new features like Drummers or Arpeggiators. and not all of your audio units may be compatible.
If you upgrade to GarageBand 10.0, the new version can open your older projects, no problem. But once opened in GB 10.0, they will no longer work in GB '11.
The installer will not overwrite GB '11, but move it to a subfolder in Applications, and you can use both versions cuncurrently. They do not interfere and you can use GB '11 as before.

    Yes.
Restore your iTunes library from your computer's backup along with all other important data that should be included with your computer's backup such as your documents, photos, etc.
Important to maitain a backup with any computer platfirm but event more so with Windows due to being very insecure and unreliable,

  • IDVD no longer comes with new software

I recently purchased a MBP and it came installed with iLife'11.  I was disappointed to notice that it did not include iDVD.  Is there a way that I can install iDVD?

Apple should make it clearer that new computers don't ship with iDVD or iWeb.  The absence of mentioning those specific applications on the computer pages, while still including them with the boxed iLife suite, is not explicit enough.  Especially not after years of including the entire iLife suite with new computers.
If you go to this page: http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html
It doesn't mention iDVD or iWeb, but there is a link, "Learn more about iLife", and there it does mention iDVD and iWeb.  That's confusing.  They have to make it more clear that the boxed copy inludes those applications but new computers do not.
I guess Apple figures only a small percentage of people will miss those applications.  And they're probably correct about that point.

  • B2 Error with new MSI GTX 970 :(

    Hi there team!
Just registered to try and get help. I spent around 6 hours researching + trying all the suggestions throughout many different forums, but the B2 error still persists. I am currently running the following spec:
Mobo - MSI Z68A-G43 (G3), with version 4.30 ( I flashed bios last night and still no help)
    CPU - Intel® Core™ i5-2500K Processor, 3.5GHz etc.etc.
    RAM - Corsair Vengeance 2x4gb at 1333MHz
    GPU - MSI GTX 970 GAMING Twin Frozr V 4GB GDDR5
PSU - Cooler Master Silent Pro 700W
    I have tried:
-Taking out the card and using the on-board graphics to flash the bios to later version, No help. (during this process, the B2 error does NOT show up)
-Upgraded the card to latest nVidia drivers, even uninstalled and re-installed them. No help.
-Upgraded all the drivers from MSI, i.e. chipset etc. through Live Update 6. No help.
When the card is in, I cannot even access bios, it just gets stuck at B2 screen for like a minute, and then carries on with the boot process. I am able to play games etc. after the booting, but this error for sure should not be there when the PC boots up. I didn't have any issues with my old GTX 560 TI. I've read different forums saying that it might have something to do with the mobo thinking that something has to be connected to the on-board graphics; or that flashing BIOS helped a lot of users, but not me :(.
I don't have a second PC to test the card on.
Literally, I would try anything, please someone just help :(( This card is a beast and I wanna be able to properly use it and not having to worry about this error.
Thank you very much guys, hope someone can help!

Man thank you so much! It is finally working!!! Thank you!!!! ))) It is showing correct version in BIOS, does not show B2 error whatsoever, all done! )
Thanks for your time! You can close thread, but it's very useful for anyone that has this issue!
Wich version of BIOS do you have installed? Can you OC your processor with new BIOS?

  • Power Mac G5 Refuses to start with new RAM!

I have a Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8GHz June 2004. I know I read somewhere online that it takes 1GB sticks of RAM, and that it has to be dual channel. I went to Best Buy today and got myself 2 sticks of 1GB DDR PC3200 "Compatible with 400/333/266MHz" Dimms, and installed them in pairs. When I start them with or without my old memory, my mac starts up, makes no noises, but the fromt white LED light blinks 2 times, and does this repeadedly until I shutdown and install the old 512MB sticks. I need to get this new RAM to work in here, I just paid $112 total for 2 sticks, and I am not ready to go back to the store yet. Is there something I am missing here? Something I am not doing right?
    New RAM Specs:
    1GB DDR Dimm,Q PNY Technologies, PC3200 "Compatible with 400/333/266MHz"
I need to get this to work on my machine! Thanks for any help.

Is there something I am missing here?
Not all RAM is created equal and seldom does over the counter PC RAM work in a G5.
Buy and install ONLY guaranteed Mac compatible RAM.

    BTW, you paid too much.

    That means "Incompatible RAM types".

    1. DO i have to install JAMPACKS on my new Macbook pro?
    2. Are JAMPACKS still compatable with the new GB?

See: This document explains what the in-App purchase is about.
Expanding GarageBand for Mac (v10.0) content with an in-app purchase
Do you still have your old Mac?
How did you migrate from the old Mac to the new Mac? Did you transfer your old software and documents using Setup Assistant? Then your old GarageBand '11 version should have been migrated, and all your instruments.
if you did  not migrate GarageBand '11, copy your old Instruments Library and Loop Library over from the old mac. Copy the following folders to a thumbsdrive and merge the missing dontents into the corresponding folders on your new mac:  (from the system library - the top level library folder on your Macintosh HD):
    /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/
    /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/
And if you would like to continue to use GarageBand '11 for access to missing features, copy also /Applications/GarageBand over, but to a subfolder of Applications. I recommend, to install the old GarageBand as well. It can be used in parallel to GB 10.0, and will come in handy, if your old projects are having problems.

    2. Are JAMPACKS still compatable with the new GB?
The JamPacks are nice to have, a terrific collection of instruments and loops, but if you did not have them previously, that will not help with your missing instruments. You can instll them by buying Mainstage 3. They work well with GarageBand 10.0

  • Can't replace old text with new text in a text box

Hello everyone. This is my first time posting in the forum, so I'm hoping this works out well. We recently purchased a few copies of Adobe Acrobt X for the office, and one of the users is having an issue with editing text in a field. She can type new text into a box, but when she goes back to replace that text with something else, the old text stays. New text appears on top of the old text, and you can see both. Is there a way to simply highlight the old text, delete it, and then replace it with new text? Thanks in advanace for your assistance. I understand this might be confusing, so let me know if you have questions.
    Thanks,
    Dan

You have to use the text touchup tool (there is a new name like text edit tool in AA X) to edit such text. It sounds like you are using the typewriter tool or something like it. Text editing in Acrobat is not for the weak at heart. It can be very frustrating and is not recommended except for very minor changes. If at all possible, you should edit the original and just recreate the PDF.

  • Opening a .band file in new garageband

    Hello!
I wonder if anyone could help me.  I have a new MacBook Pro.  I used to have a PowerBook G4 (2005) and have garageband projects I was working on when my computer suddenly wouldn't start anymore.  I have all the .band files but they won't open with Garageband on my new mac.  (The dialogue box says it can't be opened as it might not be in the right format.)  I haven't used garageband on the mac before and indeed the icons for the example files look different to the icons for my old files.
Please help!  If there's any way to open the file or get the music from within or even is it possible to download an old version of garageband?  The music projects I have are recordings of children with disabilities I've promised to put on CD for them so I would really like to get to them if at all possible!
    Thanks for your time!

Usually the GarageBand Project files are upward compatible but not the other way around. Opening your .band files on a newer computer (=newer GarageBand version ?) shouldn't be the problem.
In case something went wrong and your files are corrupted, you still can try to open them in the Finder. Any audio recordings are stored inside the .band file which is actually a special folder (called Package File).
Ctrl+click on the .band file to get the Shortcut Menu. It should have the command "Show Package Content". Select this and the .band file opens its content. You should see a Media folder that contains all the recordings and loops from that Project.
    Hope that helpsEdgar Rothermich
