Confuzed about webcams...

So I've owned my mac mini (middle version?) for about 2 weeks now and I have to say first off, its really really nice. I've been a windows user forever and I love how simple and effective everything is on the mac... and if i ever need or want to use windows, just bootcamp it!
But, I do have one problem and those are webcams. I need a webcam for youtube, and maybe I dont know what I am doing, but when I plug in a universal webcam (i've tried like 5 of them), and lauch iMovie, it says it cannot detect the webcam at all. I tried the webcam using iChat and its detectable and works, but imovie doesn't want to see it. Should I make the movies first then import them or am I doing something wrong? Thanks!

Mac OS X is plenty picky about webcams to begin with, and iMovie is even worse. You'd probably have to use a webcam very specifically stated as compatible with your exact version of OS X, and best would be to use a video camera of some kind that is connected via Firewire. If you do plan to do a lot of videos for YouTube, you should consider getting a decent digital video camera with Firewire connectivity anyway, as you'll be able to make much nicer, higher definition videos that way.

    Hi shahchin,
    I think you should check this Toshiba document:
    [How to change the settings for the integrated webcam if the image is very dark or black |http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=59]
    Furthermore the microphone is located on near the microphone because its a part of the webcam.
    Regarding the picture quality of webcam you could also try reinstalling the webcam driver from Toshiba website.

  • Confuzed about Math.pow

    Hello all its me again -_-
    I have a simple question, I am trying to get an algorithm to function like this :
    15000 ( 0.07/ 12 )
    -36
    (1 - ( 1 + 0.07 / 12 ) )
    where the -36 is the -36th power
    I have tried this:
    answer = (15000 * (.07 / 12)) / (1 - ( 1 + 0.07 / 12 ) * Math.pow(-36));
    but alas i get this error message :
    exam5.java:14: pow(double,double) in java.lang.Math cannot be applied to (int)
    answer = (15000 * (.07 / 12)) / (1 - ( 1 + 0.07 / 12 ) * Math.pow(-36));
    I do not understand this because the answer is a double and i have to int data types in this problem O_0
    So the question is:
    How can I fix my algorithm to function like the one I posted at the beginning, or how would I go about writing an algorithm like that.
    your regards
    Drag

    Oops just noticed that when I posted the algorithm it was
    15000 ( 0.07/ 12 )
    36
    (1 - ( 1 + 0.07 / 12 ) )
    where the -36 is the -36th power
    it is supossed to be
    15000 ( 0.07/ 12 )
    -----------------------> -36
    (1 - ( 1 + 0.07 / 12 ) )
    where the -36 is the -36th power
    and it is between the closing two parentheses
    very sorry , that is probably why your suggestion did give me the answer I was looking for
    Your Regards,

  • Are there any webcams that work on a dial-up modem with OSX  Tiger?

    I've seen some discussions about specific webcams, but my problem is I'm on a dialup modem, without broadband. Though webcams exist that will work adequately for me with OS 9.x, there does not appear to be anything anywhere in the market that will work for with Tiger. The closest are the Logitech cams that stop at 10.2. Anybody have any suggestions?
    Powermac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   dial-up modem. not broadband available (I'm in the sticks)

    Firewire cameras are natively supported in OSX.
    Many USB cameras are supported using 3rd party
    driver
    such as <a</div>
    href="http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/"
    target="_blank">maccam.
    You can also get drivers from ioxperts
    Tim,
    Thanks for the quick response. However I was not
    asking about digital cameras, I was asking about
    webcams. Am I missing something?
    Yes you are missing something. I was talking about
    firewire webcams doh!

    s/
    I've been following detailed threads on specific
    webcams, and have not seen anyone have success for my
    situation.
    What do you need a webcam for?
    Tim,
    Thanks again. I'm learning a lo already by following your suggestions. I have no high-power needs, just basic video chattiing, but I'm in the sticks out here, on a 56K dial-up modem. Can't even get broadband. Many of the cams I've seen require high-speed internet. I can continue searching.
    I will mark this question as answered by you, but if you have any particiular cameras to suggest, I will appreciate your inputs. I had already looked at Macworld without success.

  • WEBCAM Driver: HP Omni 120-1136 Desktop PC

    Hi :
    Surprised that I could NOT find on HP's website in the section for this particular computer the drivers for the webcam built in to this very nice HP All-in-One, Windows 7 64BIT computer.
    Details:
       HP Omni 120-1136, Desktop PC, S/NPersonal information removed); P/N: H2M54AAR.
       AMD E2-188 @ 1.7GHz
    Maybe some of you might be able to send me an email with a clickable link to that file, P L E A S E & Thank You.
    Patrick

    Hello again Paul:
    Well, I'm configuring this nice HP for re-sale. When I clicked on the desktop icon for the built-in we cam I got the following error message (verbatim):
    The application failed to start because it's side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more information.
    That sounded MUCH more complicated than simply downloading and re-instaling the app/driver.
    It's amazing to me (and you from your previous comments to me about webcam software availability) that HP does NOT typically show webcam software on it's site for the computer they sell that come with built-in cams. Mysterious. Frustrating to BOTH of us.
    Again, thanks for coming to my rescue. When next in Central Fla. stop by for lunch - on me... !

  • Webcam not starting through YouCam application

    I have an HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook, product number LW217UA#ABA.
    I haven't had any trouble with the webcam in the past, but when I tried to Skype recently my camera wouldnt turn on. Then I went to the YouCam application, and I get an error message stating: "No webcam detected. Try plugging in a webcam into your computer now. if you are using an integrated camera, make sure it is turned on."
    Ive searched for help on this issue through the forums and I was told to check the device manager to see if there is any imaging device listed. There is not. If this is indeed the problem, how do I go about fixing it?
    Thanks.

    Hi Bmh,
    The sad thing about webcams is that they can last forever - then they die.  Or not.  There is no way to tell for sure what is wrong with it EXCEPT that the Device Manager cannot see it.  Unfortunately, the Device Manager is pretty stupid:  it either sees a device (your webcam) or it does not.  There is no in between.  The bit doing the managing is really the YouCam driver.
    There is a rather limited document you can look at that shows what to do in the even that your webcam stops working (or never worked).  Here is the link:
    Connecting and Testing Webcam in Windows 7
    The document may help... and may not if your webcam is really dead or really stuck...
    ===========================================================================
    You can try resetting the Notebook.  This is called the "Hard Reset" because it kicks everything, presumably hard enough to reset all the connections - IF the webcam has not developed a loose wire connection (a real possibility and one you've no doubt read about here on the forum), then the Reset may reset the webcam connection with the Device Manager.
    Hard Reset:
    Sometimes all you need to do is kick the computer.  This method works for a variety of connection and ‘stuck’ program issues.
    Disconnect all external devices first.
    Remove AC power and the battery
    Press and hold power button for at least 30 seconds
    Reinstall only AC power for first startup ** See Note
    Power on - Log in
    Next time you shut down the system, reinstall battery.
    ** Note: You can ignore the bit about leaving the battery out.  If you like, reinstall battery the first time and be done with it.
    ===========================================================================
    There are lots and lots of HP forum posts on webcams - I've written some of them.  READ, read, read.  Help may be here somewhere.  Don't give up yet.
    If you try everything, do everything, and nothing works:
    Get it fixed by sending it in for repair (that does work, I've done this.)
    Give up and buy a really nice Logitec Pro 9000 webcam - awesome clip-on webcam, I've done this.
    Buy a new notebook, I've not done this to fix a webcam, but a new notebook is a great thing to have
    Don't kill the messanger.  I don't work for HP.  I've had webcams that work for years.  I've also had webcams that were DOA from the factory on a brand new notebook.  It happens.
    I hope this helps!

  • Handling webcam video

    I'll be the first to admit that I don't know a thing about
    webcams, but I've got a customer wanting to have a CF site connect
    two webcam users together and allow them to converse with audio and
    video.
    Any thoughts or experience doing this?
    Thanks!

    Well CF, like HTML, is a static medium so you wouldn't
    actually do that in CF.
    There would have to be some clientware required (Flash,
    Shockwave, Java, ActiveX, etc) that could connect each client's
    webcam to the web. These in-turn could be run and processed via CF
    or HTML for a website.
    The connectivity for the webcams comes from the actual client
    interfaces though, and many times these are proprietary. I know of
    a widget for Shockwave that may help, but it's usually used as a
    desktop app. You could also check with various webcam vendors (like
    Logitech etc) and see if they have an SDK for such things.

  • Satellite P300: BSOD error STOP: c0000139 {entry point not found}

    I've been having this error for a few weeks on my Toshiba P300.
    When I start my notebook there appears a blue screen with an error for a split of a second:
    STOP: c0000139 {entry point not found}
    The procedure entry point ntoskrnl.ExiAcquireFastMutex could not be located in the dynamic link library Hal.dll.
    Then Windows Vista starts normal.
    I don't get this error when i start the computer from hibernate. What does this error mean??
    I also have problems with my integrated webcam. I get the message: 'locked by another application'. I already reinstalled the software I downloaded from the website, but that didn't help. Does the error have something to do with the webcam that doenst work properly??

    I dont know what the problem can be but you should use system restore tool and rollback OS to earlier time before this error message started.
