Conky disappears on show desktop

Conky disappears in gnome when i click "show desktop"
own_window yes

own_window_type override bypasses own_window_hints that's why conky is above the windows, however i'm not sure how to get both desired effects with nautilus. I have actually never ran conky in gnome. I'll do some research, does anyone else have an idea?
own_window_hints  undecorated,below,above,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
If own_window is yes, you may use these window manager hints to affect the way Conky displays. Notes: Use own_window_type desktop as another way to implement many of these hints implicitly. If you use own_window_type override, window manager hints have no meaning and are ignored.
own_window_type
if own_window is yes, you may specify type normal, desktop or override (default: normal). Desktop windows are special windows that have no window decorations; are always visible on your desktop; do not appear in your pager or taskbar; and are sticky across all workspaces. Override windows are not under the control of the window manager. Hints are ignored. This type of window can be useful for certain situations.
You could try own_window_type desktop but im not sure if it will minimize again.

The own_window section in .conkyrc is:
James wrote:#own window to run simultanious 2 or more conkys
    own_window  yes
    own_window_transparent yes
    own_window_type desktop
    own_window_hints undecorate,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
    edit
I have changed own_window_type desktop to own_window_type root
and now conky is working correctly

  • "Show Desktop" icon in Gnome Disappears

    Hello All,
I have GNOME (installed from the repos).  Once every few logins (it seems pretty random) the "show desktop" icon (usually in the lefthand corner) is missing.
If I try and add it again, the new icon actually appears directly to the right of the original. If I logout or reboot, the original icon re-appears.
I have found nothing online relating to this problem, nothing in the forums (one post mentioned it, so I commented, but never got a reply).
I've actually had this issue in another distro since before I started using arch --- Fedora to be precise.  However, I've yet to see it in ubuntu, debian or slackware (and I use ubuntu at work every day, on multiple machines).
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

I have the same "show desktop icon"  problem --- I had this issue in fedora as well, was hoping it'd disappear in arch. did you ever fix it?

  • Conky disappears from desktop at click

    Hi
Using xfce4, when running conky, if I click on the desktop ( on a icon or simply on the desktop ),
conky disappears... but it is still running.
BTW if I click on conky itself ( on its window ) it stays on. If i click on the panels, it stays on too.
    Strange...Any idea?
    Serge

Try setting own_window_type to override. Also, when asking configuration questions, always post the file in question when possible.

  • Accept and invite in outlook, disappears from my desktop PC calendar but shows on my ipad exchange calendar

If i accept an invitation on my pc (outlook 2007, Exchange 2003)  it shows up for a brief time and then disappears but shows up on my ipad2. This was a message sent to all users and all users that do not have an iPad2 have the message on their calendar correctly, all users that have iPads only end up with the calendar entry on their iPads.

If the meeting has already been accepted on a standard Exchange client, the iPad/iPhone should show the meeting as Status: Accepted and not offer the Accept/Decline option (unless opening the meeting itself). This is expected behavior. Accept/decline meetings in one place/client, ideally a real Exchange client like Outlook/OWA vs ActiveSync-enabled device (like iPad/iPhone).

  • Startup disk disappear from the desktop

Well, without any reason, The startup disk is disappear from the desktop.
    (Just only the startup disk)
I found this 2 times before, once on my 8 cores Mac Pro, once on my iMac G5.
I couldn't do anything to fix them, so I formatted and re-install OS.
with my iMac, it ran Tiger before, there's no problem until I changed to Leopard,
After about 2 weeks under the new Leopard, then the startup disk disappear from the desktop,
it shown the hidden status in disk utility and could not mount it,
So I formatted and back to install old Tiger.
Everything's fine. that's really good Operating system.
Bad luck, about 2 months ago, My iMac G5 had some problem with motherboard and the harddisk also damaged, I send it to Apple Thailand, They fixed it and send back with installed Leopard inside my new hard disk.(well... again)
Now after a few weeks. it happen again.
Startup disk disappear from the desktop.
This problem never exist on my Mac Pro, just with the iMac G5.
(Please don't tell me to check the finder preference about the sidebar setting.
it's already set to show every items there even the iDisk)
I wondered why I don't see anyone have problem with this.
I'm really want to find the answer about this.
I asked this question to Apple Thailand's support team but they didn't have any idea.
    Who's gonna answer this

I found a solution to the problem and posted it here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1858340&stqc=true
    I pasted the solution below:
    from a Terminal window, type:
    ls -lOd /
(That's lowercase ell, lowercase ess, space, minus, lowercase ell, capital oh, lowercase dee, space, forward slash)
You should get something like this:
    hostname:~ username$ ls -lOd /
    drwxrwxr-t 32 root admin - 1156 Feb 8 20:35 /
Sounds like you might see something like this instead:
    hostname:~ username$ ls -lOd /
    drwxrwxr-t@ 32 root admin hidden 1156 Feb 8 20:35 /
(note it says "hidden" instead of "-")
    To fix this, type:
    sudo chflags nohidden /
and provide your admin password. You won't get any output back from the command but the icon should now appear on your desktop, and the hidden flag should go away if you repeat the 'ls -lOd /' command.
And just in case you missed it above, you've got to be sure Hard disks are turned on in Finder General Preferences under "Show these items on the Desktop"

  • Agent disappearing from Supervisor Desktop

    Greetings -
Can someone help find a solution to my below problem..
    Environment:
    Cisco Unified CCX premium
    9.0.2 SU2 version
Agent desktop: 9.0(2) (Premium); Build: 9.0.2.2021
    Problem:
We have three agents out ten who regularly disappear from supervisor desktop.  I opened a TAC case with Cisco but could not figure out what is causing the problem.  The agent desktop is installed on Win7 64bit, Kaspersky antivirus and no firewall between UCCX and agent.  Between UCCX and agent, we have a Cisco 4500 connecting 6500.  I also opened a case with Cisco switching team to check if switches have any role in agent disappearing, but nothing was found on the switches.  It is interesting that only three users are affected out of all.  The affected users' logs on to CAD without any issues in the beginning of the shift, however, after couple of hours i.e. around 11 am agents start to disappear from the supervisor desktop.  After the agent disappears, the CAD chat windows appears like below and the <Unavailable> status in the chat windows changes constantly every 10 seconds to <Initializing>
The UCCX capture shows the following:
<AGENT_DESKTOP_user11>.  The application will be logged out.
2014-08-20 03:09:46:249 WARN FCCS3008 Network communication error <COMM_FAILURE> sending message to application <AGENT_DESKTOP_mwoods>.  The application will be logged out.
2014-08-20 03:09:50:021 WARN FCCS3008 Network communication error <COMM_FAILURE> sending message to application
The agent logs shows that the heart beat is sent to the UCCX but UCCX dose not receive anything.  While all these are happening, the user can still receive and answer calls, the supervisor though cannot see the user, the reports she runs displays user metrics.  However, after few hours, the agent will appears again on supervisor desktop or re logging will make the user appear again.
Has anyone experienced this strange issue?
    Thank you in advance.

    Thank you for prompt response.
What I did few weeks ago was, created a new account, assigned queues to that new account and then asked the used to use that account just to check if the issue is specific to user account.  Even then, the agent (newly created account) was disappearing.
I am sure if I ask the user to use the working agent account, will not have a problem.  I will have to check with the supervisor if they want to try this out.  I will update you momentarily.

  • Folders are disappearing from my desktop I am on 10.6.8

Folders disappeared from my desktop. All the files in a FileMaker Advanced 11 folder which was on my HD disappeared but the folder remained. Files that were on a backup server disappeared - first half, then a few days later the remaining files were gone. On a newly created backup, when folders were recovered from the backup they could not be copied. Duplicate folders had to be created and the files moved to them before they could be copied. Even though the original folders contained files, they showed 0 bytes. After the files were moved the new folder showed 720 KB.

You may find this thread helpful:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/19268163#19268163
but the desktop is not the proper place to keep files and folders:
Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.
And it is why Apple invented 'Stacks'.

  • Horizontal bar showing desktop bottom of screen

I clicked or tapped something on my doc, now a 1 inch horizontal bar runs along bottom of screen showing desktop

I have no clue what that means!  Lol....  Sorry.  I did remove "dock from view", I have restarted the computer.  I forgot how to take a screen snapshot, but again, just a horizontal bar along bottom, showing desktop.  Dock, if visible sits on top of it, if I go to "full screen" bottom showing desktop disappears.
Again, when I tapped with two fingers, or right clicked or tapped with one finger....cannot replicate it, it just appeared pushing whatever window I have open up an inch and showing my desktop.

I was going to suggest adding
    own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
but I see that you've already solved it.
With own_window_hints, you should be able to leave own_window_type as "desktop".

  • Why does my external drive disappear from my desktop?

I am switching from PC to Mac. I have 2 externaldrives. Both have been formatted in FAT 32 by the MAC. When I plug them in the desktop and finder see them, then with both of them they have disappeared from the desktop and from finder. Still can be seen in disk utility and system profiler. How can I find them and why does this happen?

If you daisy chained then try without. May not be enough power to handle both at sme time. Other than that read some info:
    1. Shut-down your Mac, and unplug the power cord
    2. Turn the power off on your external FireWire devices
    3. Unplug the FireWire devices from the Mac
    4. Wait for 5 min.
    5. Plug the power cord to your Mac only
    6. For PPC Macs: Restart the Mac while holding the Option-Apple-O-F, and keep holding until you get the ">" prompt, then release the keys
    7. At the ">" prompt type:
reset-nvram and hit the Return key
set-defaults and hit the Return key
reset-all and hit the Return key
the last command will restart your mac
    8. Shut down your Mac
    9. Connect all your FireWire devices to the Mac and turn them on
    10. Restart your Mac.
All your FireWire devices should reapear, if not repeat the procedure
How to avoid the issue :
The only really proven way to avoid burning up a FireWire port is to connect all devices and to turn them on PRIOR turning on the Mac. Likely, one must unplug them and turn them off AFTER the Mac has been turned off. If you need to connect another device, then you're on for a shutdown of your machine...
It's a tad annoying but it guarantees that the FW ports won't be damaged.
Be careful when using self powered devices such as webcams, iPods, hard drives or hubs, as they can destroy the port pretty easily. Another thing is to avoid daisy-chaining hard drives.
When the FW port doesn't respond anymore :
In this case, peripherals won't be mounted upon plugging, and won't be displayed in Apple's System Profiler. The self powered devices will still be fed by the port, but won't respond either.
It happens that the PHY just hangs after a surge or a random problem. Once hung, the port will not respond any longer, it is possible to reset the component by going through the following steps :
1° boot the PPC mac in Open Firmware by holding [ Apple key - Option - O - F ] after the startup chime.
2° you'll get to a command prompt. the keyboard mapping will be QWERTY, so pay attention when you type the following :
RESET-NVRAM (enter)
RESET-ALL (enter)
3° Now the mac should restart itself and the port should function properly again.
If it still doesn't work, then it means that the PHY is damaged.

    From Wiebetech:
I just upgraded my Mac OS, and now I'm having trouble with my FireWire device. What can I do?
A: With nearly every OS update Apple releases, some external drives are not recognized after the update. The typical symptom is that the device will not mount but the volume is visible and grayed out in Disk Utility. This means that the device is working properly, but the OS does not recognize the volume as mountable. Sometimes the drive does not show up at all.
The first thing to do is to see if repairing Permissions with Apple's Disk Utility First Aid feature solves the problem. If not, try repairing the disk with First Aid. Another possible solution is to zap the PRAM. This is done with a keyboard command while rebooting. Restart your computer and hold down the Command, Option, P and R keys. Consult the Apple web site for details.
If this does not work, then try pushing the PMMU reset button on the logic board. Consult the Apple web site for locations of the button for your Mac. If the drive still does not show up, shut down, disconnect all peripheral devices, and boot from the Mac OS Installation CD. The later the OS version, the better. Do not reinstall the OS, but when the Installer is loaded up and ready to begin, go to the File menu and use the Disk Utility program. Connect the drive that is having problems, then start the Disk Utility application. If you see the external drive and it is not grayed out, you know the drive is okay. Run Disk First Aid on it anyway. Then run it on your internal boot drive while you are at it. When done, unmount the external drive and UNPLUG it! Then restart the Mac.
When the Mac has restarted and is running on the internal boot drive, reconnect the external drive.

  • Files & Folders disappeared from the desktop!

I have a number of files and folders that just simply disappeared from my desktop. I have tried all of the "normal" recovery methods (restart, repair permissions, run Disk Warrrior and replace the directory, run Data Rescue II) but I find NOTHING!
I am totally baffled by this and cannot seem to find anyone who can give me an answer. HELP!
I was hoping the Apple board would have enough "experts" to help me find my missing data......

I have exactly the same problem, and I've already asked for some help on this boards but with no luck, and 10.4.9 didn't help, nor did the new bootcamp beta.
From what I understand this seems to happen only on Intel Macs that uses Bootcamp. When you boot back to OS X after using Windows, your desktop is like a black hole and everything you put in there just seems to disappear.
If you look for the missing file with Spotlight, it will find it, and if you click on it in the Spotlight window, the file will appear magically on your desktop.
So basically the files are there but the desktop is just not showing them.

  • Show desktop function!

Hi all, before I even started this thread.  I have googled for a solution and did not find anything.  I am currently using a macbook pro 2007 with mountain lion.  I am getting frustrated because i cannot figure this one out.  So my problem is that when i use the function show desktop, i click on the folders on the dock and everything that was hidden reappeared back to the desktop.  I am trying to figure out where you use show desktop where everything disappears, it stays like that until you want it to reappear again.  In OS leopard, it works totally fine.  I am able to hide everything by show desktop, browse around witthout having it to come back until I use show desktop again.
Is there any solution to this?  Its frustrating because i use show desktop so that i can search for something on other folders or even to check files on the dock by clicking and showing stacks.
    thank you

thanks for your post scotch.  Of course hitting that command wont work lets say if your safari is active.  You have to click away to make the desktop active while the windows are up then it will work.

My show desktop commanc is set to F11 and bottom left hot corner.  Yes it undos the show desktop.
This is something small yet has been buggin me lol. i tried it again with my old G5 running leopard and it seems to work fine.  It doesn't undo it.

As the title says, I remapped this key to the show desktop feature. Now when I want to use the function keys I have to use them blind as the windows disappear when I try to use it!
I've reset all keyboard shortcuts in Keyboard. I've made sure that "show desktop" under mission control is not set to function either.
