Connect 2 external drives to 1 firewire port?

MacBook Pro 5 4 Mid-2009 15"
has 1 firewire port
1 USB 2.0 port with 2 more USB 2.0 ports on an external monitor
I've been running Time Machine on a 500 GB LaCie d2 quadra external drive and need to upgrade, probably to a 3 TB drive.
To transfer my backups from the old drive to the new one, I need to connect both to the MacBook. Can I connect both in a daisy chain to the FireWire port? Or do I have to connect one via USB and the other via FireWire?
Thanks.

You can either use a FireWire hub or connect one device through USB. If either drive has two or more FireWire ports, it can act as a hub.

No. The Thunderbolt to Firewire adapters only work to connect a Firewire drive to a Thunderbolt port. They do not work in reverse, to connect a Thunderbolt-only drive to a Firewire port. If the only port your drive has is a Thunderbolt port and all you have on the Mac is Firewire, you can't use that drive with that computer.

  • Transfer files to MacBook from external drives & MacPro without FireWire

I just realized my Macbook (13 inch aluminum) doesn't have a FireWire port. WHY? I can't believe I didn't notice when I bought the thing. I assumed that a FireWrire port was standard like USB. I know that I can transfer files from my MacPro Desktop using migration assistant. However, it doesn't let me pick and choose which files to transfer. Is the best plan to transfer everything all at once and then delete what I don't want from the MacBook? I've also got a lot of individual files & folders on external FireWire drives that I'd like to copy to my MacBook. Is there a way to hook up an external FireWire hard drive to my MacBook? Are there FireWire to USB adapters? Am I going to have to transfer these files via USB memory sticks, CD-R's & DVD-R's? Or maybe it would be a better idea to dump them on my MacPro, use Migration assistant to copy it all at once and then pick and choose what to keep on my MacBook.
I know I've got a lot of questions. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I assumed that a FireWrire port was standard like USB.
It is, just not on the aluminum Macbook.
It can be done with USB, but it is slower and less reliable.
The hard drive is fairly easy to remove on the aluminum Macbook. I would remove it and install it in an external Firewire enclosure temporarily to transfer your files quickly and reliably, then put the drive back in the Macbook.
Firewire allows two operating modes. One is asynchronous, like USB which suffers from latency, bus contention and collisions.
The other is isochronous mode, and it lets a device carve out a certain dedicated amount of bandwidth that other devices can't touch. It gets a certain number of time slices each second all its own. The advantages for audio/video should be obvious: that stream of data can just keep on flowing, and as long as there isn't more bandwidth demand than the wire can handle, nothing will interfere with it. No collisions, no glitches.

  • How do I set up original windows 8 DVD on a Macbook air when my external drive needs both usb ports?

got a brand new macbook air and want to set up an original Windows 8 DVD via bootcamp. Probleme: my external DVD needs 2 usb port connection so I want have a chance to plug in an usb drive at the same time.
Any other choice to get along?

ok I'll try this - why didn't I have this problem with my previous Macbook air - I cannot remember how I managed setting up an original Win 7 with exact.the same equipement. Has the bootcamp Software changed? I remember burning a cd with the Windows Driver.

  • Connecting External Drive to Airport Exress?

so what would happen if i connected my LaCie 160G ext. harddrive to my airport express via USB? I've read a lot of posts concerning Airport Extreme, but ideally, i would love to be able to connect my external drive to the airport express and have all of that information accessable through my wireless network...possible? or stupid?

Basically, it won't work. The USB port on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is only for connecting an USB printer. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107857)

  • USB external drive vs. Firewire

Do I understand correctly that I cannot store my movies and edit them in iMovie when they reside on an external drive via USB connection? Is it possible that I can use the USB hard drive as long as I format the drive for Mac (not FAT format)? Or must I use a firewire hard drive? Anyone? Thanks in advance for anyone who knows the 411. -Jeff

I am sorry, it has been a while since I looked into this. I believe it goes something like this...
I hope someone will correct me if I am wrong. Also, if you have a Fat32 drive, plug it in and try it. If it doesn't work it is easy to reformat using disk utility.
NTFS - Good for Windows, but Read Only for Mac, Bootable for Windows
Fat 32 - Works for Both (read/write), not bootable for Mac, 4GB-1 maximum file size, Bootable for Windows
HFS+ - Works for Mac, bootable for Mac, no Windows
The issues with Fat 32 for video applications: 4GB file size limit frequently will not be enough, disk fragmentation can be a big issue for large file sizes.
I haven't been able to find anything saying it absolutely wont work, and I dont have time to test it tonight.
Also, drives have come way down in price. You can get a new firewire drive and format to hfs+ for video applications and keep your current USB drive for sharing.
One more piece of data, I have a firewire drive (HFS+) for my nightly backups with SuperDuper. I bought my daughter an inexpensive USB drive (HFS+) for backups using SuperDuper. The Firewire drive is much faster for the nightly backup, and it is much faster when I boot from it than booting from the USB drive (SuperDuper creates bootable backups).
One last thing, I bought a USB 4GB flashdrive for about $30. It easily handles most of my needs for transferring files to a PC or other Macs.
Sorry to ramble, but that is my brain dump on this subject. Hopefully others will point out my glaring mistakes and omissions.

  • Buslink External Drive 300 GB Firewire Problem

I purchased a Buslink 300 GB external drive that has both USB 2.0 and Firewire 400 connection. I use the drive to hold dv files that I have downloaded from my video camera. I formatted the drive for mac because the dv files are larger than the 4gb limit for FAT32. Everthing was fine using the firewire connection until I got to about 140 gb of data on the drive. No further files would copy to the drive. I now have to use the USB connection, and have gone up to 250GB without problem. I like the performance of the firewire connection better than the USB connection.
I formatted the external drive Mac OS Extended into one 279 GB partition. I found nothing on BUSLINK's web site about a driver, is there a fix for this? Is anyone using another external drive with firewire that will work properly to the limit of the drive?
    Thank you

I have 2 external firewire HDs - both worked prefectly until recently... I am getting Error -36... I have used the Disk Utility - no errors founds. Despite this conclusion, I decided to reformat them both.... and still getting the same error -36... any suggestions?

  • Connecting external drive crashes iMovie 8 - Apple please fix this!

If I have external drives connected when I start iMovie 8 it will crash when it tries to index them.
Also if I have no drives connected and iMovie 8 running, the program will crash as soon as I connect a drive.
Apple, please fix this! I need to use external drives for storing of my videos.

Are your external drives formatted as Mac OS Extended / HFS+ ..? They should be.
If they aren't, you'll have to remove whatever's already stored on them, and then re-format them using Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility. You can then put back what was stored on them.
(P.S: I have NO crashes using iMovie '08 and any correctly-formatted external FireWire drives. I don't use external USB drives, as they're not fast enough for the sustained read/write speeds which video requires.)

  • Bad Drive, Enclosure or Firewire Port?

I have a WD "Book" drive connected via a FW800<->FW400 cable to the FW800 port on my mini. After having the 10.6.3 upgrade go south on me, I'm having problems with the drive. I was able to get the mini back-up by reinstalling 10.6 and then updating through Software Update, but I'm still having troubles with the drive.
All tests give the drive a clean bill of health, but if it's connected to the machine, I cannot boot the Mini -- It starts to boot, but never doesn't get to the login screen unless I unplug the drive. I can mount the drive after login; however, eventually some application access the drive will "space out" regarding the disk access. It seems like any part of the program that's not related to the disk access (UI, other windows, etc.) will continue to work, but anything actively involved in, or waiting on the completion of the disk access will stop making progress and never complete. For example, copying files in the Finder will stall eventually (it might be after less than a dozen files, it might be after a thousand. I was able to get all the files off the drive, so it's not corrupted files/disk.
Before the upgrade troubles, I was planning on pulling the drive out and putting it in another enclosure (I'm not too happy with the WD Book enclosure), but now I'm hesitant. If the stalling problem is due to the enclosure, I'm OK; however, if it's the drive, then I'll have to buy a new drive.
My big fear is that something horked the firewire port and/or software, so attaching anything to that port will cause problems. Short of borrowing something to run on the FW800 port, is there any way to test it?
    Ray

From what I've heard, the MyBook is not a drive that can be used outside the case, but is hard-wired to the enclosure.
That said, there are disk maintenance tools that can fix and repair directory structure, notify of bad sectors.
Or maybe it is cable, or FW ports, and needs to be reset.
When SL came out it seemed like there were an exceptional large number of reports of problems than would be expected, often from 'known' good brands using Oxford chipset (not sure if they were the latest, or if the latest were the very ones having trouble), but there have always been the fear that another 10.3.0 FW bug would occur.

  • Format an Ethernet Connected External Drive from PC to Mac System

Hi there, apologies for my ignorance however after suffering Windows PCs for 35 years I have finally changed over to 2 iMacs and loving it.
I have a new model WD 1 TB (MsDOS formatted) external drive attached to my router via ethernet.
My iMac (imac7,1 a running OS X 10.5.2) recognises the external drive as a "PC Server" fine and I can access it from Finder and copy files to it.
Unfortuneately NEITHER Disk Utility nor Timemachine recognises its existance.
I believe I may have to format the drive for the Mac system. However how can I do this if Disk Utility does not recognise it as a drive? Is there some utility available that allows me to format an Ethernet attached PC drive to the Mac system.
    Thanking you in advance

Time Machine can't use a NAS drive even if it's formatted with a GUID partition map scheme and HFS+ Journaled. Apple dropped support for network drives before they released Leopard last year.
Apple does support their own Time Capsule device and network backups to Leopard Server running Time Machine Server.
There's not much point in formatting the drive at all if you ever plan to be able to connect to it with a PC.

  • Ethernet Connected external drive problem

I have a 500GB external drive that I connect to the home hub via ethernet. When I connect it to the home hub it does not appear in the connections list for the router and none of the computers can see it. The drive was working fine when it was connected to the router we used with our last broadband provider. Has anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

Thanks C1Rider. I changed the IP address of the drive to be in the 192.168.1.x group and I also changed it from dynamic IP to static IP. Now I can now connect to the drive from all our machines.
The only strange thing is that when I look at the router settings the network drive still does not appear as connected to the router. This means I cannot use the "Always use this IP address" setting in the router.
Section 8 from this link should help make sure your Static IP addresses never wonder into the Homehub Dynamic allocated IP address range.
If you need to reset the Homehub make sure you record any needed settings so that you can re-enter them afterwards.

  • Will iMac (wired) USB keyboard connect external drive?

I have a recent iMac with the wired USB 2.0 keyboard.
When I connect a WD Passport portable USB external drive to the keyboard, I get a repeating click-click-click from the drive.  It never shows up on the iMac.
If I plug the same external drive into the USB 3.0 slots on the back of the iMac, it fires right up.
Is that how it's supposed to work?  Do the USB 2.0 slots on the keyboard not support a small external drive?  It seems strange that it would cause the drive to whir and click, but not be recognized by the Mac.
Can anyone explain?  Or is there something wrong with my keyboard?e

USB drives which don't have their own power supply usually won't work if plugged into a keyboard.

  • Ultra slow indexing while connecting external drives

Hi, this is my first post.
I've some problems with Lion, under Snow Leopard it was all ok.
    This is my setup:
i've 73 (yes 73) external hard drives each one containing tons and tons of files (textures, libraries, images, documents).
Under Snow Leopard, when i plugged one hard drive and searched for a file (example: .rar) in Spotlight, in few seconds i had the complete listing of the .rar files in that hard drive.
Now, if I plug that hard drive, i see some strange issues:
-it lists always some 1040 - 1060 .rar files even if i have 18567 .rar files on that drive. This happens in few seconds, then it starts indexing - always
-the scroll is VERY slow compared to the scroll in snow leopard, i mean it takes time to get to 10.000+ files option (snow leopard was faster)
-i've to index each new hard drive i connect to my macbook, and this is time wasting. In Snow Leopard i just connected new hard drives with files on them and in few seconds i had access to the whole list of .rar files.
Now, is this a known Spotlight bug?
This is the reason why i dual booted with SL, because when I have to search files on a new external HD it's faster for me to reboot the machine, enter SL, do a search, copy the file on the internal HD and then reboot in Lion. This is not good.
    Any ideas?
Don't tell me to upgrade to 10.7.x please... that does not resolve this issue.
    Thanks
ps: my internal HD is a Seagate Momentus XT 500gb 7200 with 4gb SSD fwSD25

I am having the same problem and I just heard back from an Apple Tec stating that the engineers purposly removed the ability to Spotlight External / Networked hard Drives with Lion OS.
WHAT THE H*LL WERE THEY THINKING. Why would the engineers take out the the ability to index External and Networked Drives?
Removing this feature slows me down to a crawl. I have 100's of files stored on USB Hard Drives at home and 1000's of files store on our company Network at work that I now have to look at line by line and folder by folder to find a file that I need.
What is the point of SpotLight if I can not find anything store on external drives?

  • Moving from directly connected external drive to a network share.

I've looked around and can't find a page on how to do this. I have an external drive hooked up to my iMac. I am using it for TM backups, so I have this directory on it (Backups.backupdb). There are also 2 sparsebundle images due to 2 other people in the office using this drive for TM backups.
I am going to be moving this external drive to a mini we have here, which would mean I now need to take the Backups.backupdb directory and convert it into a sparsebundle image, since I'll now be backing up over the network.
Is there a way to do that? I would really like to preserve my backups since it's pretty important for my work.
    Thanks.

no, there isn't. you'll have to start a new backup sequence using a sparse bundle when you move the TM drive to a remote computer.
