Connect 2 iMacs, etc

At present i have 2 iMacs at present and 1 USB HP printer. Dont know how to connect both iMacs to the printer. one mac is running 10.5 and the other iMac is running 10.4. 10.5 iMac is connected via the ethernet to the internet and the 10.4 i would like to keep it without any internet connection.
The idea is that both macs should be able to print at any time without changing the cables off and on.
All suggestions wud be much appreciated.
Thanks

Having problems connecting iMac(late 2006) running 10.7.5 to a Samsung Flat Screen TV using separate audio/speaker cable and HDMI standard cable, mini-DVI to HDMI video converter.  TV displays generic Apple galaxy background and "some" windows (e.g. screen resolution choices).   It does not show Mail or Safari menus.  System preferences'  display "gathered" the Samsung and chose its resolution.  I did not find a way to select the Samsung as my display.
In addition to having old hardware, we have Verizon FIOS providing internet and TV access.  Is there any way to make this work for us?  We would like to stream video (Netflix) and view shows from the Web.  Do we need Apple TV to do this?  Or is it not possible with our old iMac?  My husband thinks that our Airport could be a factor.
    Thank you

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of posts with users trying to use their Macs/iMacs to mirror their streaming video from their Macs to an HDTV.
There are, actually, many alternatives to choose from than just from a Mac.
You need to have or invest in a WiFi capable router for all of these examples.
Apple TV only integrates with WiFi and newer Mac hardware. So, if you want to have total integrated experience, if you have a 2011 Mac or newer, you might as well pay the $100 for the AppleTV box.
If you have a older Mac, like I have noticed many users do, then you have other options.
If you want to elimate long cable clutter and having your Mac at the mercy of your TV all of the time,  you can still use the AppleTV box independently or purchase cheaper alternative media streaming boxes from Roku, Sony, Boxee or any number of electronics manufacturers that now have media streaming boxes and media streaming capability built into DVD/Blu-ray players.
These eliminate long cable clutter by being close to the HDTV where shorter, less expensive cables can be used.
Another alternative for iPad users is to use an iPad with the USB/HDMI video adapter and use your iPad as the streaming box. This ties up your iPad in much the same way as it does with your Mac, but again the iPad can be close to the TV and use minimal cables to the TV.
Another alternative to is to use a combination of an iPad and your Mac to stream content that is only available to stream online from a computer. In this case, you can use a desktop remote app on your iPad and Mac. A good and cheap Desktop Remote app is Splashtop Remote. This allows you to completely connect your iPad remotely, over Wifi, to your iMac desktop. The app streams both video and sound to the iPad which is still connected to your HDTV. The resultant stream video picture will be smaller than the size of your HDTV, but it will still be plenty large enough to watch. Again, if you own a iPad and an Intel Mac, this method also allows minimal cabling to the TV.

Searching for this error turned up different solutions but none of them worked.
One mentioned OVM not being able to handle spaces in vm names but this is not a working solution as most of the machines are just regular names without spaces or special characters.
Also interesting, sometimes this error does not turn up when powering on BUT the machine just powers off again and returns to its turned off state. Next power on the error returns.
OS types vary from S10, Win XP and RedHat so a possible connection to the error being the host OS is not there.
Harddrive types are set to auto. The vm.cfg's of functioning machines do not differ from non functioning machines besides the actual vm name in the vm.cfg
Any idea to this error or how to solve it ?
    Thanks

  • Connect iMac 2011 as a display for another iMac 2011

    Hello.
I have two iMac's 2011, and want to use one of them as a display for another.
Is there any way to do that?
    Best regards,
    Alexey

    Thanx for reply!
    My mistake - one of iMac's is 2010 (iMac11,3).
According to this doc, there is no way to connect iMac 2010 to 2011 in TDM.
Maybe there is another way to do that (over ethernet or any other interface)?

  • Can i connect imac and macbook by usb?

can i connect imac and macbook pro by using USB clable? i just want pass my files and music from macbook to imac.
    thank you

You can't connect both computers by USB. The easiest way is to connect them using a FireWire cable (if your iMac and your MacBook Pro have got FireWire ports), and put your MacBook in target disk mode (start your MacBook holding the T key).
Doing this, the iMac will detect the MacBook's hard disk as an external disk, so you can easily access to your files from Finder and copy the data you want to the iMac's hard disk

In the case of using Target Disk mode between computers, a similar restriction is also present. The adapter will work in Target Disk Mode; however, it will only do so if first plugged into the system before invoking target disk mode so it can be initialized by the firmware.

  • Connecting iMac and MacBook Pro using a non-Apple wireless router

I use a Belkin wireless router. Is there any way for me to connect iMac and MacBook Pro using the router to share files? I think I read somewhere that I need AirPort Extreme for this, but I'm not sure. Thank you.

Great resource from Dennis...file sharing, I.e. networking, is a function of the operating system settings and not the brand of router. Using Mac OS X 10.6 on both machines makes it really seamless. Following Dennis's kb article should make the two almost act like one machine.

You can't. It requires a 2009 or later 27" iMac to use Target Display Mode. You could try using software like ScreenRecycler.

  • Beginner question: Can I create a hybrid home network between an ethernet-connected iMac and an airport connected Macbook Pro using a hybrid router?

I recently acquired an friend's used iMac, I don't know anything about networks and all I can find is how to create a Wi-Fi home network but nothing about hybrid Ethernet/Wi-Fi networks.
I have the iMac connected via Ethernet to the wireless router.
I connect via Airport with my MacBook Pro
I would appreciate if anyone has any pointers as to how I can start setting up a network between my ethernet-connected iMac and WiFi connected Macbook.
    Thanks!

ethernet and airport/WiFi are just transmission media for the same network. If you can get internet on both computers, they are networked. Using the same router = same network.
So now, what is it you want to do? Share files between them?

  • Cannot Connect Imac 24" via mini dvi to HDMi adapter cable to Sony Bravia 3

    Hello Everyone,
I'm having the worst time in trying to connect the following:
    1. Imac 24" 3.06 dual with dvi connection
    2. Mini dvi to HDMI adapter (this mac with this connection was produced only for a short while!).
    3. 10' (foor) HDMI wire
    3. Sony Bravia 32" model KDL32L-5000 with 3 HDML connections
i.When I wire everything up, I keep getting"no signal" on my Sony Bravia TV.
ii. It doesn't matter whether I connect the HDMI wire to HDMI 1,2, or 3 on my Sony
iii. On my Imac Hard Drive>>Applications>>System Preferences>>Displays
all I get is a list of different resolutions. There is no mention or mirrors etc.
Nothing happens when I press "Gather Windows" or Detect Displays"
Can someone out there please help!!!!!
Can you also give any solution in very simple and small detailed steps!
    Thanks,
    Stacey Bindman

Majortrout, there is a major disconnect going on here.
    1. You are showing an Ebay link with a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter.
    2. You report that you have an Early '09 24" iMac.
    3. That iMac does not have a mini-DVI port. That iMac has a mini-DispayPort.
    4. You need a mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.
It is physically impossible to attach the adapter to which you link at Ebay to your iMac. So you need to take a step back and figure out what you really have; which iMac, which adapter, etc.

  • How to connect iMAC thunderbolt port to a cable TV set top box?

I am moving to a house that will have combination TV-phone-Internet services delivered via cable (Optimum is the provider).  I understand that with my new iMac which has a "thunderbolt" port that I can use the iMac as a tv monitor and DVR (recorder) and watch live TV or recorded TV.  I think it is possible to record  TV shows either on the iMac's hard drive or the Optimum DVR.  Beyond that, I get confused because I do not understand the details of RCA cables, coaxial cables, HDMI connectors, etc.  Apple does not provide support for set top boxes (I called Apple), and Optimum does not provide support for Macs (I called them too). Since Apple is the party advertising the capability of watching TV on a Mac, I would think the burden is more on them to explain how that works, and maybe they have done so on their web sites, but I cannot find it so far.  I can understand that the cable company does not want to tell people how to bypass the need for their DVR equipment.  Before I go out and hire a consultant for a few hundred dollars to explain it, I was hoping I might find online some tips on how to set up a system at home.  No luck so far.
Am I correct in assuming that wireless connections are NOT an option because a TV signal has too much bandwidth to work wirelessly?  (I do have a wireless router already.)
If so and if I am using wires to connect the iMac, am I correct to think I want to use the thunderbolt port for best results?
If so, what next?  What exactly is the adapter or cable I need and how do I plug it into the set top box?  There are several people in the household, and so I would want the flat screen TV monitor to work normally at times rather than only use the iMac.  Does that require several set top boxes?   I would think that this would be an issue for many people, and it seems to me that this forum would be an ideal place to get help.  So far the people I have spoken with say "well it depends on what you want to do and what your equipment is and for that you have to go ask ___________[someone else]"

I do not understand what Apple TV is.  I have TV already.  When I look up "Apple TV" on the Apple website I see that is has been redesigned to be small in size but big in entertainment.  Since I did not know what it was BEFORE it was redesigned, knowing that is has been redesigned does not help me understand it.  Now it is smaller?  So it was too big before?  "Watch Netflix titles instantly."  But I can do that with my mac and an internet connection now.  So what is Apple TV that makes it a better or different way to watch Netflix movies?  "Best of all, Apple TV is just $99"  Sorry, but how is that the Best of All part?  My Optimum Cable is charging me $30 a month for TV.  But Apple TV's best part is it costs $99?  Is that per month too?  I also see that everything streams wirelessly to Apple TV, and all I need it so connect apple tv to my widescreen TV using an HDMI cable sold separately.  Now I am really confused.  I plug in a cable to get wireless streaming?  If it is wireless, why does it need a cable?  If there is a cable involved, how is it wireless?  Color me clueless.  I cannot find a straight forward description of what Apple TV is.  And so I don't get how that is the answer to my question.  Sorry for being so simple-minded.  Thanks for the suggestion and I will go research further to learn what is an Apple TV.

  • Just connected iMac to HDTV

Hey guys, Just connected my iMac to my samsung HDTV via a mini dvi to HDMI adapter, picture is awesome, i just have a question, i am basically in a DUAL SCREEN mode, both my LCD and my iMac screen work together at the same time, moving my Mouse cursor all the way to the left enters my LCD screen and i can do whatever i want on the LCD screen! its really nice, but i have a question, when i watch a video or something on the LCD TV side , my iMac's screen stays ON, as in the screen doesnt turn off as it should , i have it setup so the screen turns off after 3 mins of inactivity but heres the thing, how do i tell the iMac to turn the screen off when im using the LCD side in the Dual Mode?

Go to System Prefs/Displays/Arrange and set the iMac in Extended Desktop mode (you are calling it Dual Screen) then drag the two display icons into your preference order and drag the menubar to your HDTV to make it the primary display.
Now if you use Front Row to view all of your media; DVD, Photo, Video, etc, when FR appears on the HDTV the monitor on the iMac will darken. Media that you view with iTunes should do the same. Some 3rd party multimedia apps may also darken the secondary displays when in Extended Desktop mode with multiple displays. I only use FR.

  • Connect iMac to Samsung flat screen

I have an imac with the intel chip and I just got a new samsung tv and i want to hook up my computer to my tv. I dont really know what i need to do to get it connect to the tv to watch stuff from the computer to my tv. So far I think i need this...

but i dont know if that is correct...can anyone help me?!

Well, see, if you want an answer, you need to provide the necessary information. If you consider it vital information that you are using a desktop machine instead of a laptop, you need to say that. (I don't consider that vital information in this case.)
The iMacs have a mini-DVI port on the back, so you'll need a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter or mini-DVI to S-video adapter. (The HDMI would be better.) If you're using a desktop other than the iMac listed at the bottom of your messages, just look up its specifications to determine whether you need DVI or mini-DVI. Then follow the directions here for how to make it go full screen, etc.
I don't know anything about the reviews you mention, so if you want more information about why these adapters wouldn't work well on desktops with Intel chips (which sounds fishy to me), you'd need to tell us where to find them.
