Connect 2 Macs via Firewire 800

First let me introduce the characters:
1. Mac Pro 2x 2.66 ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon-- 10.5.1
2. Mac Book Pro 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo-- 10.5.1
Ok... in OS 10.4.9, I used to be able to hook a firewire 800 cable into both computers, change a sharing option in the network, and then both computers would show up in the other's finder window. I enjoyed this as I often have to share large files between computers and the transfer speed is much better than my wireless network.
However, since upgrading to Leopard, I am unable to do this, is it still possible?

It's called ad-hoc networking.
First of all plug the firewire cable into both machines.
Second, in the System Preferences->Network pane, select Built-In FireWire and then click the gear icon and make this service active. Click Apply. It should automatically set up an IP address if the defaults have not been changed. It should say Configure: Using DHCP. Repeat this step on each machine.
Third, you might need to turn on AFP sharing in the Sharing Pref Pane and share either your drives or specific folders. This is done by selecting by selecting File Sharing in the Sharing Pref Pane. Click the + sign underneath the Shared Folders column and add whatever Drives/Folders you would like to be able to share.
The shares will not automatically show up on your desktop. Open a Finder window and the other machine should show up in the Shared portion of the sidebar. You will have to hit Connect As and log in (with the computers admin login) for full access control over the share.
10.5 added a lot more permission restricting things for sharing. Unfortunately it is not as easy as it used to be, but it is a whole lot more secure.
Sounds complicated, but it really isn't.

"the one before the new ritina display" i have a cannon gl2 video camera which is mini dv. when i plug it into my mac via firwire 800 it does not show up in the iMovie. i have set the settings on the camera to vcr mode and changed it to av->dv out. when i click on the import from camera on imovie it doesnt even show my camera in it. it just gives me the option to import video from my facetime camera. the camera is turned on the wires are connected i know for fact that its a firewire and not a usb. i know what they each look like. i bought the firewire cable and it was marked down cause it was an opened and used item. would it be possible that it could be deffected and if that is not the reason what other options do i have?

I would say that odds are high that you have a bad cable. Maybe that is why they returned it.
I would suggest trying a different firewire cable.
You can find Firewire cables inexpensively at monoprice.com. You need a 4 pin to 9 pin firewire cable.

Other things to check:
Is your camera plugged in to wall power (not to batteries only). Must be hooked to an AC power source to import.

Can't recall password when connecting 2 Macs via Firewire (Snow Leopard)

In Leopard I used to be able to connect my iMac and my Macbook to each other with a Firewire cable and share/move large files between them. Since the upgrade to Snow Leopard when I connect the two machines up I'm prompted to enter a password which I can't recall setting. I've tried all my usual password variants to no avail
Is there anyway I can find the password that I set or can I change one of them?
EDIT: If I connect as a Guest I can see the shared folder on my machines (I have Filesharing turned on). An easy workaround would probably be to add the folders I need to play with to the Filesharing list but I'm more concerned about the password issue

Essentially I am connecting the 2 Macs to each other with a Firewire cable. In Finder, under Shared, I can see my Macbook and I can connect as a guest but the password that should work simply doesn't

lllaass is correct.
To use ThunderBolt devices, a computer must have left the factory with a ThunderBolt port.
There are no known work-arounds, and there are not likely to be any because Intel controls the chips and is not interested in anything less than the full [including Video features] implementation.

Mac G5 - Firewire 800 issue

Hi, I use a late G5, 2.0 GHz, 10.4.11. It have two firewire 400 and one 800 ports. I use my Mac for music production, so I have two external audio interfaces, Mackie Onyx 1640 and Presonus Firebox.
Presonus is connected via firewire 400 onto a Mackie firewire bus, then Mackie is connected via firewire 400 onto my Mac. Everything is fine.
I used a Western Digital (My Book Home) external hard disk. It had firewire 400 but I used a firewire 400 to 800 cable, so I connected it on firewire 800 port on my Mac. I hadn't any problem.
A week ago I replaced My Book Home with a Western Digital (My Book Studio) external hard disk. It have firewire 800 (and usb). When I connect it on firewire 800 port on my Mac, it conflict with my external audio interfaces. Both of them go out of synchronized and they need switch off and on again.
Western Digital (My Book Studio) is powered from a separate outlet from Mac. I tried connected via usb and everything is ok.
I connected a firewire 400 device on firewire 800 port on my Mac and everything is ok again. Only firewire 800 connection seems to have this issue.
Then I open my System Profiler. Under Firewire tab I noticed that appears an Unknown Device, Manufacturer: Unknown, Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec (except the two external audio interfaces and My Book Studio that appears right). I disconnected all of my firewire devices from my Mac, I restarted it again, but Unknown Device is still there at my System Profiler.
It seems to me like it is some kind of drivers but where?
I connected Western Digital (My Book Studio) on a friend's Mac G5 (with the same Mackie Onyx audio interface) via firewire 800 and everything works properly. Of cause at his Mac System Profiler there was not any Unknown Device...
Any suggestion please, any answer?

Hi Tom, thank you for your reply. Although I had read these threads, today I tried many things from what these says but without success. Then I read to a thread here that the Unknown Device at my System Profiler exists to every Mac G5 dual or quad core at Firewire tab. So this query goes out but my problem exists.
But now I have some new data. I mentioned at my first post that when I have connect My Book Studio to a usb port I haven't any conflict with my firewire devices.
Today I noticed that when I have connect My Book Studio to firewire 800 port and the same time only one of my audio interfaces (Mackie Onyx 1640 or Presonus Firebox) connected to a firewire 400 port there is not any conflict. The conflict happens when I plug and the second audio interface to another firewire 400 port.
Summary, there is a conflict when I have connected to my Mac an external disk to firewire 800 port and two audio interfaces connected to firewire 400 ports (one for each). No conflict with the external disk to firewire 800 port and only one from the audio interfaces (one or the other) to a firewire 400 port.
An additional info: At Audio MIDI Setup I have configure Mackie Onyx 1640 and Presonus Firebox as an Aggregate Device...
Any suggestion please?

Connect 2 Macs w/ Firewire. Not Target disk mode.

I have a PowerBook and an early 09 iMac 24". I used to connected them via firewire to transfer files. Suddenly... the iMac won't recognize the PowerBook... but the Powerbook will recognize the iMac. Actually, the iMac does recognize the PB, but only shows the "drop box" folder.
Is there anyway to configure a firewire connection or something else I might have overlooked? I'm not interested in target disk mode.

Sorry to take awhile to get back to you. I had no experience with connecting two Macs with FireWire, except with TDM. But today I have played around with connecting my iMac and my Mac mini with a FW cable directly.
I assume that you did two things in System Preferences that facilitate this connection; 1. you have created the FireWire network in the Network pane, and 2. you have enabled File Sharing in the Sharing pane. The only other thing to do is make sure that you have selected Bonjour computers in the Shared section of the Sidebar pane of the Finder Preferences.
Then, no matter which style of windows you use for the Finder; icons, list, columns or Cover Flow, you should be presented with a Connect button if you highlight the other computer in a Finder window's Sidebar.

Sudden device removal via Firewire 800

I just purchased a MacBook Pro. I have a LaCie rugged drive that is a clone of my old iBook running Panther. I connected the LaCie via Firewire to the MBP to transfer some files. (Migration Assistant didn't get everything???) The LaCie kept suddenly disconnecting, resulting in a device removal error. I have two different cables; tried them both. It connected to the old iBook last night with no removal error.
Any ideas??

Thank you for contacting LaCie Technical Support. As the issue you describe is an intermittent issue, it is difficult to pin point the exact issue and an exact resolution.
Mobile drives are commonly referred to as "Bus Powered" devices. They don't typically require an external power supply, and are powered by the ports on the computer. Ordinarily this is an acceptable amount of power, however, not all machines are capable of running these devices.
Most mobile drives require approximately 4 watts of energy to run. Most computers produce this, so it isn't a problem. There are exceptions, however. The physical symptom of insufficient power is a soft "clicking" sound. OS behavior can vary.
* On Mac OS X, the mobile drive can appear as an "Unknown Device" in Apple System Profiler (ASP), appear in an unusual way in Disk Utility, refuse to format with error -36, or have no reaction at all
* On Windows, the drive can appear with a Code 10 error in Device Manager, appear in an unusual way in Disk Management, refuse to format, or have no reaction at all.
All mobile drives have a "USB Power Sharing" cable included in the box. If a power problem is suspected, connect this cable to a second USB port on the computer. This will allow the drive to take more power, and can possibly make the difference in allowing it to work. Also, ensure the drive is not connected to a USB Hub of any kind. Connect all bus-powered devices directly to the computer USB ports.

HT4124 Macbook Pro 10.6.8 Imovie will not recognize Sony Handycam DCR-HC38 via Firewire 800-9pin cable. Is it not compatible? It worked with previous Macbook (black) with prev. firewire version.

Have tried to connect Sony Handycam DCR-HC38 to Macbook Pro via Firewire 800-9pin to 4-pin cable. I Movie will not recognize camera. I have transferred media on old Macbook (black version) with different firewire. Does the new IMovie not support this product?

Is it possible to connect two Macs via USB ?

Is it possible to connect two Macs via USB just like Firewire back in the day via Target mode or is there something similar? I am asking this because about 2-3 years ago I would normally image Macs via Target Mode. I used to have a regular Macbook running 10.6 along with a customized-ready-to-go .dmg image saved on the Desktop. Whenever I needed to put that image into any Mac I would simply connect the two Macs via Firewire, I would then press "T" at startup which will get me in Target Mode, I would then see the disk appear in the desktop of the Mac I had the image. I would then copy that image to the T mode macbook using super duper. Can this still be done through USB with new models and if so will I also need to press T at startup ?

No, USB connection does not qualify for this, only firewire and thunderbolt, as I read (but cannot test, for the time being I have only one such mac around).
This is why the short series of alu MBs (2008) are not qualified for target mode either.
p.s. What ‘new models’ do you refer to?

Is your DV camera plugged in to AC power (not batteries only)? When you step down from 9 pins to 4 pins, you lose the "power" pins.

Directly Connect Two Macs Via Ethernet

This has certainly been answered before, but a quick search didn't give any results. So here goes ...
I wanted to connect two macs via ethernet. I use the mount tool in finder "connect to server" all the time with machines on a network, but I've never done with with two macs directly connected.
So I connect them and my first instinct is to check the IP address of the machine I want to connect to. I then go to "connect to server" and type it in using the AFP protocol, but it doesn't work.
At this point I'm stumped and not sure what to do. I don't use the "network" item in the finder sidebar very often but I clicked it, and sure enough the machine I want to connect to was listed, and I was able to connect / mount.
So here's my question ... if I wanted to use "connect to server" tool, or even mount it manually with the mount command, how would I do it? Is it using AFP still to mount and the IP address is just bogus? Something else going on?

I put this into "connect to server" on the machine I want to connect from: afp://169.254.177.122
It spins for a while, then says it can't connect. Strangely, if I do a cmd-i on the machine in the network sidebar, it says: nfs:// automount ... into /Network
So are you sure putting in the ip should work? If so what am I doing wrong?
Okay ... plot thickens. When I cmd-i after I connect, it indeed says it is an AFP connect, but it gives the "local" name, say powerbook.local. But then, if I "ping powerbook.local" if gives me back the same IP I tried in connect to server. Huh?

Canon 550D connecting to MacBook Pro via FireWire 800

As far as I know, my MacBook Pro (MacBookPro8,1) has a FireWire 800 port. My Canon 550D / Rebel T2i has a combined A/V output and a mini HDMI port. I've been looking around online about a cable that would allow me to connect these 2 together via Firewire (required by Adobe OnLocation). I'm asking here because I'm assuming that someone here is bound to know something about compatible FireWire cables for my MacBook and my DSLR in order to use the software. My knowledge goes as far as needing to know if the MacBook and the DSLR ports are 4-pin or 6-pin. I don't know how to tell and I can't find this information about my MacBook Pro.
So, the question is: how can you tell how many pins my MacBook's FireWire port requires? And if someone can confirm, is it possible to connect these two things?

I can only answer part of your question. Your SLR has mini HDMI and a mini USB out. Your MBP has three ways to connect: USB, FW 800 (9 pin) and Thunderbolt (which is ao far supported by a limited number of devices).
As far as I know, you will not be able to use On Location with the Canon. But I could be wtong. Good places to ask are the Adobe forums and Canon forums.

Is there a way to establish connectivity via FireWire 800 port on iMac running Mavericks & my ZR300?

I have an Intel-based iMac running OS X (10.9.1 or Mavericks). I can't get the iMac to recognize my ZR300 DV camcorder is connected. I connect the camera to the iMac using a DV connection on the camcorder and a FireWire 800 connection on the iMac. Is there a driver or some other fix to enable communication between the camcorder and the iMac?

Your Mac should at least see the camera. No additional drivers are required to make the connection. It is possible the cable you are using has something to do with this. Have you tried using other FireWire 800 cables?

Sony Handycam and MacBook Pro via Firewire 800

Hi there,
I'm trying to connect my Sony Handycam (HC30E) to my MacBook Pro via the Firewire 800 port, but it simply won't register.
I bought a cable online that goes from my Sony (iLink) to the Firewire 800 port, so connecivity should be sound - but nothing at all is registering on the Mac.
I've updated all apps and Snow Leopard to the latest builds. Does anyone have any ideas?

On paper, NO.
800 is back compatible with 400 and it should work fine.
On the forums a few users have ended up in your situation.
The common denominator is 800 ports on newer Macs.
Still don't know for sure what the trouble really is.
I suspect dodgey cables not pinned out properly.
If your cable is at the budget end of the market I'd suggest trying one at the quality end. Shielded and OFC style.
If the System Profiler can't see the camera then nothing else matters until it does.
