what cable do i need to connect my macbook pro to the hdmi input on my tv?.

    hi Sam
It's actally an HDMI adapter that Apple sells.
You hook the small adapter up to your MBP and then HDMI cable to your TV. Please note adapter is for HDMI compliant for HDMI rev 1.3 and above:
My TV, which has DVI port also, besides HDMI gets its best resolution by DVI of which also sell at Apple store for the MBP.
Bottom line is check w/ your TV manufacture to be sure your flat screen supports 1920 X 1200.
    Let 'er rip and...
    cheers

  • No sound when I connect my Macbook pro (2012) to TV via HDMI!

Hi! I have a problem with the sound when I connect my Macbook pro (bought in 2012) to a Phillips HD TV. The strange thing is that it only happens with some videos (specially youtube videos) but the sound works perfectly with films and audio files I have in my computer, and also when I watch TV online (Eurosport player for instance and other similar applications). It's even stranger because it doesn't happen all the time; last week I tried many times to watch some youtube videos and after unplugging the HDMI cable it seemed to work. As I said, with Eurosport player and many films downloaded in my macbook I don't have this problem (sound is ok all the time), and this is why I'm really confused. I suppose it's not a connection problem, otherwise I wouldn't have sound in any video, right? I've tried two different HDMI's cables but nothing has changed. Please, someone help me, as I can't figure out what's happening. Thank you very much!

Well Im not sure what the fix is for your problem, but can you please open up the sound preference next time you connect the philips tv, and make sure that sound output is set to hdmi out. Then try and play your video's etc and see if they are affected.
I can tell you I get a similar problem when, for example, I have a youtube window open and then connect the external display. The youtube video will not sound out through the cable, however if i refresh the window it works. Also the same when I use bluray player on mac, I have to close it and open it again for the sound to output through the external monitor.

  • Issues with Thunderbolt-HDMI connection on Mid-2012 MacBook Pro

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro (non-Retina display) and just bought a thunderbolt-HDMI connector, but it's not working. A screen appears on the TV, only it's not my desktop screen, but the standard galaxy image in most Macs. Any idea how to fix this issue?

Your TV is extending your desktop. You can drag some of your windows off of the MBP internal screen onto the TV. You can control how the two screens are related spacially at System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement.
If you want the two screens to show the same picture, you should turn off "mirroring" on that same setting page.

  • How to connect mid 2012 MacBook Pro to home theater system

Okay so I'm looking at purchasing a home theater system and was wanting to know the best way to connect my mid 2012 MacBook Pro to the home theater system and TV. I am wanting to play both movies (Netflix etc) and music. Will my MacBook play 5.1 surround sound to the home theater system? Whats the best way to connect this all up? MacBook audio to the home theater system via Digital Optical from the headphone port with a 3.5mm to toslink adapter and then video to the TV via HDMI cable from the thunderbolt port with thunderbolt to HDMI adapter? My thinking was to separate the video and audio to get the best picture and sound. Any help/advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Will my MacBook play 5.1 surround sound to the home theater system?
    Yes.
Whats the best way to connect this all up?
An AppleTV or any AirPlay-enabled AVR. AirPlay is wireless, though you could use wired Ethernet if you want to avoid all the potential problems associated with wireless. Make sure it specifically says AirPlay which is Apple's proprietary technology. There are quite a few of them to choose from today. Denon is one, I believe Pioneer, there may be others. Shop around. The AppleTV's price was recently reduced to $69 US and may actually be the most cost-effective solution, allowing you to research the best AVR for your needs. The AppleTV has both HDMI (audio and video) and optical audio outputs.
MacBook audio to the home theater system via Digital Optical from the headphone port with a 3.5mm to toslink adapter and then video to the TV via HDMI cable from the thunderbolt port with thunderbolt to HDMI adapter?
Way too complicated But if you really don't want to use AirPlay, you can purchase an inexpensive (< $10) Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter and an equally inexpensive (<$3) HDMI cable to any HDMI input on your AVR.
My thinking was to separate the video and audio to get the best picture and sound.
It makes absolutely no difference. HDMI and optical audio use completely identical digital audio signals.

  • How do I connect my mid-2009 Macbook pro to my HDMI television and get sound?

How do I connect my mid-2009 Macbook pro to my HDMI television and get sound?

Use a mini-Displayport-to-HDMI adapter and a standard HDMI cable to connect the computer to the proper HDMI port on your computer — the one that is paired with the separate RCA audio inputs (see the TV's manual for this information). And connect the headphone port on your MBP to those inputs with a cable that has a 1/8' stereo headphone plug on one end and two RCA plugs on the other. You'll also need to select the proper HDMI input in the TV's menu system, and you may have to select the headphone port as the audio output in the Sound pane of System Prefs on the Mac (or it may be selected automatically).

  • How do I connect my MacBook Pro to an LCD TV (with HDMI and S-Video ports)?

How do I connect my MacBook Pro to an LCD TV (with HDMI and S-Video ports)?  I assume I would need to use the DVI to Video adapter that came with my computer to connect to my LCD tv.  I'm just not sure which port I should use on the TV.  The HDMI port is being used for digital cable.
Also, does anyone know if this can be done wirelessly?

For a 2010+ MBP you can connect with a Displayport to HDMI, which will include Audio.
With older MBP you will need a displayport to HDMI, if you want audio to the actually TV, then you will need to get a cable with either digital out from MBP to the HDMI, or USB audio mixed into the HDMI

I am trying to connect my MacBook Pro to my TV with a mini display port to HDMI converter. Its not working. Any suggestions?

Depends on your model TV.   Read your TV user manual.  The newer models have "how to hookup" instructions for computer & games.
You can also do a forum search as well as a Google search.

  • Thunderbolt to hdmi...  is there another way to connect my Macbook Pro to my HD TV

I want to connect my Macbook Pro to my tv and have read nightmare reviews about the Belkin cable to connect the thunderbolt to HDMI...  I need to make this happen as cheap as possible and don't know which route to take?

Here is the start of the setup:
Click on the Wi-Fi Options button and provide the needed info:
Click on the OK button. Now check the Internet Sharing box to turn it all on. If the port box you checked is no longer checked, then uncheck Internet Sharing, check the port box again, then check the Internet Sharing box again.

Dave I'm glad to say that it works perfectly but I'm embarrassed to say that my 12 year old nephew hooked it up in about 10 minutes.
If you have the Kanex Mini DisplayPort cable it will work, what confused me was changing the display settings in System Preferences,
and dragging the mac screen from the mac onto the tv. Sorry I cant be more helpful but you have the right cable now you need a 12 year old nephew.
    Good luck Derek

  • I bought an HDTV cable to connect my MacBook Pro to my Sony TV via HDMI so I could watch videos from my computer on my TV.  My TV then shows my basic computer background but the videos won't play.  What am I doing wrong?

I bought an HDTV cable to connect my MacBook Pro to my Sony TV via HDML.  The TV recognizes my computer; I see my basic computer screen on the TV. I tried to watch videos on my TV but got nothing. (tried via my facebook vidoes and Youtube.  What am I doing wrong?

I've got a similar (but different!) problem: I have a MacBookPro3,1 running Mac OS X 10.6.8. I want to connect to my HD TV using a HDMI to DVI cable but the MBP cannot detect the TV display. What's the solution? Is this a bug in Mac OS X 10.6.8 ? Any ideas what I can do to make things work with the HDMI to DVI cable. (N.B.: I have separate audio cable running from the MBP to amplified speakers for the sound side of things. It’s the video that’s the problem!)
