Connect 2013 Macbook Air to 30" Cinema Display
Hi, so I bought a DVI to thunderbolt connector and connected my macbook air to my 30" display, but it wont give the 30" monitor the full 2560x1600. Is it even possible to do this or am I stuck at driving it at a terrible resolution?

Macbook Air + 30" Apple Cinema Display + Powered USB hub
I just received my dual link DVI to mini display port adapter in the mail today, and so far it's working just fine connecting my newer generation Macbook Air to the older 30" Apple Cinema display (the Air is closed, with an Apple wireless mouse/keyboard connected via Bluetooth).
I'm wondering if anyone has any success connecting a powered USB hub to either the adapter itself or the 30" display in order to gain some USB functionality out of the Air? I have a powered 4 port D-Link hub which worked fine directly into the Air, but I can't seem to power any devices when it's hooked up to the 30" display or directly into the adapter. I can't even get devices (external powered hard drives, Mbox) to work when plugged into the screen directly (no hub).
I called AppleCare about the problem and they said they don't support USB hubs via the 30" Apple Cinema Display when connected to the Macbook Air, but if anyone has any experience with this situation or if someone could offer me advice to get USB functionality out of my MBA + 30" ACD, it would be greatly appreciated!Welcome to the Apple community.

1st Gen MacBook Air with 24" Cinema Display
I have a 24" Cinema Display that I have been using with a 17" MacBook Pro for about a year. I want to use that display with my MacBook Air. But, the Air (first generation) uses the micro-DVI output and the Display uses the mini display port. I have had no luck finding any Apple documentation on converter connections. I have the micro DVI to DVI and the micr DVI to VGA that came with the Mac, but I've not been able to find a Micro-DVI to mini display converter. Any ideas??
FYI, I'm getting this one, works just as well, half the price, good reviews and should be good enough for a first gen, mine is a first gen MBP though and I also have a new 2nd gen.

Also there is some belkin adapter and that's probably what won't work right because it's not powered the key is the adapter being powered than anything can be converted, power is the key so the "not possible" remarks don't hold up if the adapter has a power source.
If you want DVI to mini display port this is the adapter to use (DVI In, MiniDisplay Out). Still a bit steep. -
I am having problems connecting my macbook air to an external display
I recently purchased a 2012 MacBook Air, and am currently running Mountain Lion.
When I try to connect an external VGA overhead projector, for use in a conference room, using the Thunderbolt to VGA adapter, my screen resolution changes, but nothing is projected from the overhead projector. I used to do this with my 2011 MacBook AIr and had no problems doing this.
What am I doing wrong? Is it Mountain Lion or a bug in the MacBook Air. I tried connecting to an overhead projector at my office and had no problems, but in my clients conference room I have no luck.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.Unfortunately, I'm not finding success with this workaround. I'm running Mountain Lion on a MacBook Air, with the micro-DVI to VGA adapter, and the projector is not detecting the computer (regardless of repeatedly turning the two machines on and off, in various orders). I have been able to do this, prior to upgrading to Mountain Lion, with the same hardware configuration, so it seems that the problem is the software, not the hardware.
I do not see a Display icon in the menu bar, which is how I used to be able to switch. The Display setting in System Preferences does not offer a solution (though I have selected the "Show mirroring options in menu bar when available" option. I can't find a configuration of keys that will allow me to switch displays.
By the way, when I have both devices on, connect the VGA cable to the adapter, and then connect the adapter to the micro-DVI port, it shuts off my laptop. I'm pretty sure that's not supposed to happen.
If anyone has figured out a reliable way to use a MacBook Air, running Mountain Lion, using a micro-DVI to VGA adapter, for an overhead project, please advise. -
When I connect my Macbook Air to the thunderbolt display the fans run constantly
I dont understand.... but the fans seem to run at full speed the entire time I'm connected to the the thunderbolt display.
My cpu usage is blow 10% and and the cpu temp from istat is showng as 72
I understand the fans kicking in once in a while but these run for hours and hours at full speed (6496 rpm)
Anyone else having this problem?I have the same issue. I've had the MBA for a couple months now and haven't had the fan kick up hardly at all. A few minutes after it's connnected to my new T'bolt display though it kicks in and stays on. I've updated firmware once but there may be others and it hasn't helped.
Mine is in the closed position in a Book Arc and I've only got Chrome open for browsing so far. -
Pixel Distorsion: MacBook Pro and 30" Cinema Display
Connecting the MacBook Pro to the Cinema Display using the Dual Link DVI Adapter (USB from Display plugged in Adapter, Adapter USB plugged in USB Port > not next to Mini-DVI Port) produced wild coloured Pixel Lines in the Dark Areas (really annoying) and starting After Effects CS4 it even gets worse: The full Interface is blinking green on the edges of each Panel.
Pleeeaaaaase help!!I have the same problem with my 30" HD display and the new 15" MBP. However, I did not have this problem initially. Until yesterday I had been fortunate not to experience issues (see reviews of the dual link adapter at the Apple store) regarding the 30" diplay. However, after contacting applecare about an unrelated issue, the technician had me restart holding the "shift" button. He said this would "correct a lot of stuff". Well it didn't seem to do anything except cause my 30" monitor to exhibit these same problems that everyone else is complaining about! Apple, please address this flaw!

Macbook air to a thunderbolt display
I have just connected my macbook air to a thunderbolt display, the fan runs continously. Is that normal
The GPU is working harder because it has to manage two displays, and one of them with a big resolution. You should not be worried, more when fans are working correctly.
What you can do is to decrease the Thunderbolt Display resolution in System Preferences > Displays, but note that you will lose image quality -

Use 21.5 inch mid 2010 imac as a display for 2013 macbook air?
I would like to use my 21.5 inch mid 2010 imac as a display for my 2013 macbook air. I tried using Screen Recycle, however I would prefer more of a monitor situation than a side-by-side extra screen situation. Ideally with my wireless keyboard and mouse. When I connect my Macbook Air to my TV via the thunderbolt outlet and using a Mini Display Port/HDMl adaptor, the only image that appears on the TV screen is that of my Air background. There is obviously a signal getting through to the TV, but it is not sending images of anything else, and am unable to watch video through my Air. Any advise/suggestions?
This is called "extended desktop mode". It's an extension of the desktop off to the right (by default) of your MBair screen. Grab an app and drag it off the right side of your MBair screen and it will appear on the TV.
To mirror your MBair screen on the TV you can press Command F1. This will toogle between mirror and extended desktop.
You can find all the settings in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab.

Massive Battery Drain After Mavericks Upgrade on 11" 2013 MacBook Air?
I got my Air about month before Mavericks came out and the battery life was amazing on it. I was easily getting 14-10 hours of life using Chrome and Air Mail App, along with Power Point and MS Word. After the upgrade to Mavericks, it was slow but I started to notice that my battery life during classes was draining so much faster than before and I had not added anything 3rd party software, just the upgrade. I am now down to about 3.5 - 4.5 hours of battery life doing about the same things as before the upgrade. I did a couple of apps and I added (Sims 3 game). However, I have yet to touch it because of the diminished battery life.
I have included a copy of my Etrecheck, can somone take a look and let me know if you think I need to clean something off?
I did do the SMC reset and that seemed to to give a little juice (like putting new tire on your car but still not where it was before the Mavericks upgrade) as I am up to about 6 hours of battery life after the SMC reset.
Please let me know what other information you might need from me that would help and thank you so much!!

Not sure why but I had a hard time finding all of the related files to get rid of Origin. But I think I finally got them. I just uninstalled Flash and Chrome. I don't like Safari but all well. I suppose I can deal with it it until Apple fixes this battery issue and then maybe I can go back to Chrome. Safari isn't too happy with certain websites, under the Preferences/Security there is an error message that reads "Google Safe Browsing Service Is Not Available. Has not been updated in 8 days."
Haven't noticed a change in battery since doing all of this so let me know if it will take a couple of days to reset. Or if you see anything else that I can do to help. Thank!

Mid 2013 macbook air: battery drain / running hot
Hi there,
For the last couple weeks my MBA starts to run hot and drain battery fast if I've been using it for a few hours.
I use it a lot on most days and connect to powercord only once it drops down low, like below 20%.
Have just seen other posts who recommend doing that at 50% battery and will now do the same.
However my question is: have i ruined my battery in the meantime?
AND/OR is there something else i can do to get battery running like it used to, and stop the loud fan switching on all the time because it's all running too hot?

64 MB Page-outs1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Mid 2013 Macbook Air External Monitor Issues
I am running on 10.8.4 and am using a fully upgraded 2013 macbook air. i7, 8gb of ram, 512 ssd. Recently, I have been having issues connecting my computer to external displays. I have reset the PRAM, and the SMC multiple time with no luck. I have also deleted the windowserver plist files and that did not seem to do anything as well. The issue is as follows: when I plug in my laptop through the thunderbold port to the hdmi on my tv, the screen on my laptop goes blue, as normal, but then nothing shows up on my tv. I have used the same cable with my roomates macbook and it works just fine, on multiple tv's. Mine is not able to connect to any of those tv's. When looking at the display settings in system preferences, I do not see that it ahs detected any external displays. I am not sure what to do at this point.
I think I have fixed it somehow. I reset the PRAM while the tv was plugged in and it worked, but it seems that something may be wrong with my video card, because there was a bunch of fuzziness and weird colors on my computer's monitor for a few seconds before everything went to normal
