Connect a Microtek ScanMaker X6 EL scanner to iMac PowerPC G-4, 800 MHz?

I have a Microtek ScanMaker X6 EL flatbed scanner which I want to connect and use with my iMac PowerPC G-4, 800 MHz computer. Since this scanner is no longer supported by Microtek, their Tech Support advised that I should try the software program VueScan (www.hamrick.com) to operate the scanner with Mac OS X, v. 10.4.11. They suggested I connect the SCSI terminated scanner to my iMac FireWire port via a Ratoc FireWire-UltraSCSI Converter (FR1SX) and FireWire IEEE 1394 cable. Unfortunately, the Ratoc FW-SCSI Converter requires a 50 pin Female SCSI terminal. My scanner has a 25 pin Female SCSI terminal, with a SCSI 25 pin Male - SCSI 25 pin Male connecting cable. This necessitates purchasing a SCSI 25 pin - 50 pin adapter, a SCSI 50 pin Male - SCSI 50 pin Female adapter, an AC-DC adapter to power the Ratoc FR1SX Converter, and the FireWire IEEE 1394 cable. Once the physical connection is made, if the trial VueScan software works with this connection/scanner, the VueScan software will have to be purchased. The estimated total cost of this hardware/software bundle is $200+. Is there a simpler, less costly way to connect and operate the Microtek ScanMaker X6 EL scanner with the iMac computer under Mac OS X, v.10.4.11? Will the listed hardware/software above work? Any other suggestions, other than purchase a "new, modern" scanner and start over?

jaxjt, I have the same scanner connected to my G5 tower running Mac OX 10.4.11. I've been using VueScan for some time through an Adaptec SCSI card, but now all of a sudden my OS doesn't recognize the scanner, although it does appear to recognize the card. Of course, Adaptec no longer supports the card with new drivers, either.
Like you, I want to keep using my ScanMaker X6 EL, but the struggle to keep obsolete SCSI gear in my setup is becoming trying. I too am considering the Ratoc FireWire-UltraSCSI converter, or throwing it all away and getting a new scanner (serious bummer).
Unfortunately, I can't help you with your problem right now, but perhaps it helps you to know that someone else has the same problem too. I'll certainly post if I learn something new!

    Daniel Craigie-
How full is the hard drive that you are trying to save to? Not that it should matter, but have you tried scanning another document?
Is the scanner plugged directly into the Mac? Try it that way.
Disconnect all peripherals except keyboard, monitor, mouse and scanner and see if the problem goes away.

  • New MacBookPro. Where can I find a driver for my Microtek Scanmaker 3600

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro (10.6.8) but to date, haven't been able to find any software/driver to use for my scanner, including the Microtek site. I have a Microtek Scanmaker 3600 that still works perfectly. I have searched forums and online sites for software to use the scanner on the new laptop and hate to think I need to buy a new scanner when the 3600 works fine. I have an HP Deskjet 930C and was able to find the software/driver to use on the new laptop. Does anyone know where I can find the software/driver to get my scanner to work?
Where can I find a driver for my Microtek Scanmaker 3600. Tried VueScan and TwainSane without success. Do not want to buy a new scanner when old one runs great. Please Help?
    Thanks!

    Thank you for the response.
I downloaded it and it keeps telling me "No Scanner Detected." I looked on their website under supported scanners, found my Microtek ScanMaker 3600 and it says "NO" for Mac.

I just sent an email to them asking if VueScan does support a my scanner. I hope it does. I have been searching but am not proficient or know enough of what to look for. I just don't want to have to buy another scanner.

As I said, I don't use Time Machine, so it'd be best to wait for an "expert" answer, but, with my very limited knowledge, I'd say: probably not - so, for now, I'd suggest you read up on Time Machine:

  • My iMac PowerPC G4 will not connect to my Belkin N  router. I have not been able to connect for so long that I actually gave up on this computer until today, so it is a little out of date software wise. It is running OS 10.3.9.

First off i apoligize for the title length, a bit new to help forums and didnt realize thats what that was .
    Anyways;
My iMac PowerPC has been having this issue for quite a few years, prompting me to flat out replace it. I recently had a friend come to need a computer, and told them they could have it once i got it working.
The unfortunate problem that i luckily discovered: my friend and i use the same brand / model of Router, the Belkin N+ (N plus incase it removes the plus sign like it did in the title).
Ive tried everything i know, which isnt much. I've verified the password is correct, ive restarted the computer, and ive restarted my modem and router. Nothing works.
I should mention also that the computer is out of date program wise (obviously) since i havent been able to connect with it in so long. I am still using Internet Connect, and the computer still gives me the option to try .Mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Dean

The router is much, much newer than the computer, perhaps some characteristic of the WiFi network as it's currently setup is preventing the computer from connecting.
Try to go back to the basics: set your WiFi network to "b" mode only (i.e., turn off "g") and termporarily remove the password from it. See if the computer will at least establish a connection at that point. Then start turning on one thing at a time ("g" mode, then security, etc).
Not sure what format your WEP key is, but if it's not 10 characters (the minimum for the standard, which constitutes a 64-bit key), you can try making it that long. If it's 13 or 26 characters, it might be a higher encryption than the computer can support.
If all else fails, you could try looking on ebay/craigslist for a copy of Tiger to install on the iMac, which would have software support for more WiFi encryption schemes. Also, it would provide software support for USB WiFi adapters that would also be able to connect to more modern networks.

  • How do I connect a Apple VGA Display Adapter to my iMac 2 GHz Intel Core Du

I can connect the PC VGA side of the adapter to my external flatscreen monitor though for some reason can't attach the mini-DVI to the back of my iMac. The connection just doesn't fit which is odd since they both carry the same logo. I looked online to see if I needed a special cable to connect the adapter to the back of my iMac with no such luck. What do I do?

I understand your caution, but the symbol next to your Intel-based iMac's mini-DVI port designates the port as a display connection, while not specifying the exact type of display connection.
I can confirm that the same symbol that you see next to your Intel-based iMac's mini-DVI port is also seen next to mini-VGA ports on iMac G5 models as well as on iBook G4's.
The mini-DVI video display connector that you need is a 32-pin rectangular connector, while the mini-VGA connector that you have is a 14-pin rectangular connector. Looking inside each, it's possible to count the pins. If there were accurate external photos not too small, you could tell there's a difference between the two adapters by comparing the shape of the mini ends. Without side by side display, however, they are apparently easily confused, as an Apple Store employee once sold me the wrong one for my iBook.
The M9320G/A adapter you need won't connect to the M8639G/A adapter you have, but is to be used instead of it, as it will connect to the Mini-DVI port of your Intel-based iMac (as well as the MacBook, and 12-inch PowerBook G4). The Intel-based iMacs don't have a mini-VGA port.
Matching your proposed connection, the July 11 Apple Store review by "MV" of the M9320G/A adapter said: "mini-DVI into the back of my Imac, plugged the VGA into a VGA cord...".
Your M8639G/A adapter connects only to the mini-VGA port on the eMac, iMac G5, 12-inch PowerBook G4, or iBook, but will not connect to any Intel-based iMac port.

You need to turn on Printer Sharing on both the PC and OS X. I can't help you on Vista but in OS X it's System Preferences - Sharing - check the Printer Sharing box.

how do i get a wifi connection at home for my ipad from a imac

If you have a wired connection to the iMac and you are asking about using the iMac for the Internet connection for the iPad, you will need to use Internet Sharing on the Mac.
No clue which OS version you run on the Mac, but here is a link to help with 10.6 and this will get you started. You can Google " Internet sharing with Mac OS ...." and come up with a number of support articles.

  • I have my Canon GL2 connected to my I-Mac OSX version10.7.3 with a Belkin 800/400 9-pin to 4-pin firewire cable not working!!

I have my Canon GL2 connected to my I-Mac OSX version10.7.3 with a Belkin 800/400 9-pin to 4-pin firewire cable and the computer is not acknowledging the camera.

While holding the option key, click the  in the menu bar and select System Information. Select Firewire in the Hardware section and see if your camera shows up as a connected Firewire device. If not, then you have one of three basic problems:
         1. Defective Firewire cable
         2. Defective Firewire port on computer
         3. Defective Firewire port on camcorder
Rule out any of the above by trying a different cable, Firewire device (like a hard drive) or try your camcorder/cable on a different/friend's computer.
If you suspect a Firewire port problem on your computer, you can try resetting it by shutting down and disconnecting the power cable to the computer. Wait for 30 minutes and plug back in and startup. You can also try resetting Parameter RAM (PRAM) on the iMac. (Apple's Instructions for reseting PRAM)

You're profile indicates your Mac has v10.5.1 installed.
If that is correct, you need to update to v10.5.8.
Click Software Update from your Apple  menu drop down menu or open System Preferences > Software Update.
After the update is installed, restart your Mac.
Turn off the printer then turn it back on then try printing via USB.
If that didn't help, try here >  Mac OS X 10.5: Included printer drivers
