Connect a photodiode

Hi,
I have a BNC 2120 module and a 6111 acquisition card. I want to
acquire an amplifier photodiode. How can i do this? I have tried to
connect directly the photodiode to the 2120 module, but i can't see
any signal, i think that there is a impedence coupling problem. So i
have make an impedence adaptor, but is this the only way to resolve
this problem? Normally we can see the photodiode with a normal
oscilloscope that have an input impedence of 1 Mohmm. Is there a
special configuration of the BNC module or the card, to acquire
directly the amplified photodiode?
Thank you for the attention
Andrea

Hey Andrea,
Before you worry too much about impedance problems (which are explained here) first make sure that you can read in dc voltages correctly.
Other things to check:
1.) Is the referencing set in MAX equal to the referencing set on the board?
2.) Is the board configured to use the BNC-2120 in MAX?
3.) Will low impedance sources work?
If all of these point towards the source impedance of the photodiode being the problem, then the only real solution is a buffer. Here is a link to information about using a unity gain buffer.
Let us know i
f you have any further questions!

  • Scb-68 connection to the building ground

    Dear NI experts,
I need to measure the light emission of a laser by means of a photodiode. I have a standard desktop PC connected to a DAQ acquisition board by a USB cable. Then the DAQ is connected to a SCB-68. First question: I must perform a differential acquisition or a single referenced aquisition with a photodiode? Second question: if I chose a single referenced acqisition I need to connect the SCB-68 case directly to the building ground? Or the System PC+DAQ+SCB-68 is already connected to the ground? Sorry for my elementary questions but I not very familiar with electricity...
    Thank you so much
    Best regards

    Hi,
If you have less than 8 signals, you should use Differential mode. This mode does not care about grounding. The only thing that you may want to do is to connect a 100 kOhm resistor between (-)terminal of your AI channel and GND, so that the signal is biased.
If you are going to need more than 8 channels, then Single Ended is the way to go for your connections.
    - Referenced> use it if your sensor is connected to ground and the ground is the same as the ground for your PC
    - Non Referenced> use it if your sensor is connected to a ground different from the ground of your PC or if it is not grounded.

  • Creating VI for photodiode detector. Help me

    Hi,
I am student and doing research on liquid crystals for LCDs and smart windows. Recently, my Professor bought some NI Hardware and two photodiode detectors.
details of my setup is given below,
    1. photodiode detectors (PDA36A-EC Si Amplified Detector, ThorLABS) here are detector specifications
    2. NI cDAQ-9172 and NI9205 module which is analog input 10V.
    3. 632.8nm HeNe Laser.
I want to measure the light intensity on photodiode detector. the response time of LIQUID CRYSTAL CELL to electric feild in milliseconds (ms). Now I want to know that how can I make such VI by which I can measure the light transmittance and sve the signals to a file? I am new one to this feild and no one knows, how to use this setup. plz help me out in wiring the photodiode detectors wiring to module NI 9205 and making VI.  Thanks alot.

My suggestion is to hold off on the code for right now. Your first order of business should be to connect the sensor to the DAQ module. The sensor has a BNC connector. Do you have the 9205 with the D-sub connector or the spring terminal connector? If you have the D-sub you'll need to make a cable, which isn't that difficult since you're only talking about one signal. You may want to consider getting the 9933. Either way don't forget the 50 terminating resistor at the DAQ module end if your cable is longer than 12 inches. If you can, keep this cable short. If you don't have the skills to make the cable, then just find someone - there must be someone there who knows a little about electronics, and it's not like you woud be asking them to rebuild Apollo's landing computer.
Once you've done this you can use Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) to test the connection and make sure the DAQ system is reading correct voltages. MAX provides test panels so you can see what the DAQ module is reading. Thus, you can vary the laser and see the voltage change on the test panel. MAX is installed automatically when you install LabVIEW or DAQmx (which you will need if you don't already have it).
Once you've gotten this far then you can look at what you need to do with the LabVIEW code. In your case it will probably be a simple loop with a DAQ Assistant Express VI to collect the data and a Write Measurement to File. Both are Express VIs which have dialogs for setting up how they work. But, like I said, get the hardware connected first, then worry about the sofware.
P.S. By the way, is this in any way related to your query from a few months ago?

  • Need to Measure Light Freq. using photodiode and have it analysed by FFT, details below.

I a new to LV. Project is to measure light freq. using photodiode heald against a TV screen. Am required to have it analysed by FFT, I have read lots but still at dead end of which VI I can manipulate, tried Spectrum Analysers but not right. Need it to collect at rate of at least 100/sec. I am using a CB-68LPR I/O and PCI-MIO-16E-1. Photodiode is connected to an amplifier and filter before it is hooked into the connector board so signal is clean. I will be measuring freq. of ciliary beat where photodiode placed against a TV screen.

    Hi Julesy,
are you shure what you want ti do?
TV screens don't show pictures, they show a point (3 points on a colour
TV) with changing intensity passing by very fast.
    For instance, if you h
ave the PAL Standard, each picture is built with 625
lines, in 20 ms, interlaced. This means, 64 ?s line with the leading and
trailing overhead. The visible part of a line is aubout 52 ?s long.
If you attach your fototransistor to the screen, and its diameter may
cover a circular area of maybe 3 mm and the visual part of the line would
be 520 mm, then: And if this covers four of the screen lines, then you
will receive pulses of 0,3 ?s length if the line passes the center of the
fotodiode. Not passing the transistor in the center would give back an
    even shorter pulse.
And if you get all this working (which I don't think) then you would
measure 2 groups of pulses every 10 ms with 2 pulses each (remember
    interlacing).
Even if all the DAQ would work, is your fototransistor fast enough. Think
about miller capacities. Its not so simple at it seems first to solve this
    measurement problem.
Please let me know what you intend to do. I was an TV- enginear many years
ago, and I don't remember ev
erything relevant anymore, but there are some
hardware- related things to be aware if if you want to measure TV-
    signals.

  • Light intensity measurement using photodiode

Hi,I would like to measure light intensity from photodiode thorlabs110 which is taken from polarising microscope and control the temperature using linkam controller T95 using labview2014.can anyone suggest code for above project.

    Hi kasamaneka,
so you decided to open a new thread instead of continuing your original one. What's the reason for that decision?
Infact the lesser the ambient light falling on thr LDR the brighter the LEDS get.
So you have an analog input and you need an analog output. You connect both by simple math, in the beginning something like "AO = 5 - AI" should do the trick. Instead of using ExpressVIs you should use simple DAQmx functions as demonstrated in all those example VIs coming with LabVIEW...
You should keep in mind you cannot connect a LED directly to a voltage source. You should also keep in mind the current limits of the AO pins of your DAQ card, they are given in the manual/spec sheet. That's pretty basic electronics knowledge, you should have learned that in school by now...

  • Photodiode sensitivity and DMM diode test

I have questions about the operation of a photodiode and the relationship between sensitivity and the diode voltage I mesaure with my DMM.
One of my products uses a photodiode to detect the magnitude of incoming light.  Recently there has been a dramatic step-change increase in the uncalibrated/default value of this measurement.  The technicians trying to salvage these units noticed that they could use their DMM's diode test to discriminate between "good" and "bad" photodiodes.  Every unit that failed calibration had a diode measuring 0.6V in this test; old production units contained photodiodes measuring 0.5V.  Replacing the 0.6V photodiode with one measuring 0.5V makes everything all right.
Is the DMM diode test result related to the photodiode's forward voltage?
Is the sensitivity of a photodiode related to the parameter measured by this test?
What do I even ask the manufacturer if I want what I used to get?
    Thank you,
    Jim
You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are. ~ Alice

    Jim,
I think you are on the right track in trying to ask the right questions. Unfortunately it may not be easy to determine what those questions are.
What is the wavelength or spectrum of your light source? What is the intensity at the photodiode? Do you have stray light or other noise issues? Is the illumination uniform over an area much larger than the photodiode or are you measuring a small spot? How fast are things changing? Has anything else changed in the product or the test setup?
In response to one of your original questions: Every handheld DMM I have used applies a fixed current (often 100 uA or 1 mA) with a compliance voltage ranging from 1 to 4 V and then measures the voltage across the diode.
Any junction diode, including LEDs, is a photodiode if light can get to the junction.  The forward voltage of a diode depends on the materials including the doping levels, the size, and any internal resistance including lead and connection resistances. The sensitivity depends on those things as well as the optical configuration, exposed area, and probably other things. I doubt there is any simple correlation between forward voltage drop and sensitivity. You probably got lucky on this one.
How closely does the performance in your product correlate with any of the specifications on the photodiode datasheets?
    Lynn

  • Differential vs. Single-ended connection

    Hi,
I want to acquire a signal from a photodiode, which its output is as current, in the following: you can find the link of that.
I'd like to know which type of connection should I select?Differential or single-ended?
    Thanks
    Petar

    Hi Petar2015,
I am unable to see the link that you intended to use, so I don’t know very well which photodiode you are using. In the following link, you should be able to find a little more information about the different ways to wire inputs.
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/3344/en/
I would recommend you to use the single ended to acquire input of current. But if I were you, I would read through the document and analyze the ways to connect it with the diode you have.

  • USB Device for IPOD not recognized by Windows, whether ipod connected or no

During the past few days I have received a pop up error message from (I would think) Windows that the USB device is not recognized. I have the USB plug for the ipod connected (as always)but the ipod isn't even connected. It keeps popping up like every few seconds that the usb device is not recognized.
When I attach the ipod itself, the ipod is recognizing it because it powers up. But, it took 10 times just to get the ipod to recognize through itunes. It updated, then immediately upon completion, windows again starting giving repeated error messages that the usb device wasn't recognized.
I have downloaded the newest itunes but I had it on my system for 4 days with no problems whatsoever. I don't think that's it. No other system changes.
I've deleted my temp files and cache. Also did a "disk clean up" and "defrag." It's still doing it.
    Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem. Ever since I upgraded to version 7, iTunes & my PC no longer recognise my iPod, and it therefore won't sync.
It's not the USB port (other devices work in it), I rebooted my iPod and re-installed iTunes, I've tried stopping and starting the iPod Service (but can't see my iPod in My Computer). When I run the Diagnostics it says iPod connection failed. I've even bought a new USB cable but that doesn't work either.
This is driving me up the wall. Is there a glitch with iTunes 7?
Can anyone help me out?? Thanks

  • Ipod touch can no longer connect to XP following Apple upgrade, HELP !

This is a nightmare. My son has an ipod touch (8gb)purchased a couple of months, and it's been fine until a couple of days ago. I downloaded some music for him, and just about to synch when Apple informed me on itunes of a software upgrade, so naturally I did this. However, it could not complete it saying there was a problem installing the hardware. The ipod then had a permanent picture of a usb cable pointing towards the itunes logo. Itunes no longer recognises this ipod or my own ipod as a device.
I'm not a techhie expert, but I generally know my way around computers, however I could not resolve this.
I called the Apple technical support desk, where I spent 1 hour 45 minutes with 2 different advisors who could not resolve this. We installed and re-installed various components from drivers to itunes to anti virus software, however nothing could change. There was simply no recognition of the ipod at all when connected. It does give a pop up message to restore the ipod, however you can't actually click on the restore button because to have to get rid of the pop up message first, then the screen with the restore facility disappears.
Windows xp is continually popping up a message saying " FOUND NEW HARDWARE WIZARD There was a problem installing this hardware. Apple Mobile USB driver. An error occured during the installation of the device. The system cannot find the file specified."
You then have to click on finish, however the message keeps coming back. We kept going round and round in circles with the technical support people, where it was left that I should start removing programmes on my computer to see if any of those are causing a problem. I have had the same spyware for the last 12 months now and never had a problem before, nor any other programmes.
I booked a genius appointment at my local Apple store today where the assistant reset the ipod to factory settings so it could at least work. I explained the situation, however 15 minutes was never going to be long enough to look into it, and a restore was all they did. Obviously all of my programmes were lost, however when I got home and plugged it back into the computer again, it could not be recognised by itunes and i got the same pop up message. Luckily we have not spent alot on downloads, however my son has lost his music now and it cannot be connected or upgraded. It's under guarantee however a software upgrade by Apple has totally messed my computer up. I really don't know who to turn to now as both the service support and store has not rectified this, something I feel has been caused by Apple.
    Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

  • Windows Blue Screen Error Message Appears As Soon As IPod Connected

Everytime I connect my IPod to my computer, I get the Windows Blue Screen error message. Thought it was the cable, so plugged cable in by itself. No problem. Uninstalled IPod and ITunes software and then plugged in IPod, still got the Blue Screen. The Blue Screen says something about "recent plugged in device problem". It is not the cable, it must be the IPod. Did not have this problem when I bought it. Tried it on labtop and get the same error message. I can't do updater or anything that requires me to plug the IPod into a computer because the Blue Screen appears immediately. When I unplug, the Blue Screen remains and locks up the computer so I have to restart each time. I have tried everything I can think of. Please help.

Hi Mike thank you for replying,
I am not able to start the computer in safe mode, safe mode with networking, last good known configuration etc, Each time it quickly blue screens and restarts about two secs into the process.
I was unable to try a clean OS install from the disk as it gave the blue screen error shown in the original post. The same thing happened when I tried to use the repair option on the XP home disc. So i can't get into the computer at all to start diagnosing the fault, the only clue I have is the error message, and after searching the internet I haven't found much enlightenment from that yet.
If you can help me out or suggest where to search it would be much appreciated.

Folder Watch is much faster on the adding files front, can be set to run in the background and includes a useful exclusion feature, however it’s slow at removing orphans. iTLU is better for this although doing it manually after looking at a list of proposed removals generated by Folder Watch is probably faster still. iTLU can also be set to update iTunes when you've used 3rd party tools to change tag info.
You may need to amend the list of file types these programs look for. My list includes:
    .mp3 .mp4 .m4a .m4b .m4p .m4v .mov .wav .aif .mid .ipa .ipg .ite .itlp .m4r .pdf
Note the last 6 types may not be recognised as already being in the library so should either be omitted from the search or you can add (at least for Folder Watch) individual exclusions for files you know are already in your library.
