Connect a portable hard drive to my time capsule

I have the 2TB timecapsule I understand I can connect a portable hard drive to the timecapsule via the USB port at the rear. Can you please tell me how to do this as when I plugged one in nothing happend

Click on the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading, and if your drive is recognized, it will appear as a folder in the window to the right, along with a folder named "Data" representing the Time Capsule drive....assuming that you have not renamed "Data".
If the USB drive does not appear, then you need to check the formatting of the drive. It needs to be HFS+, also known as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32.
A Windows format of NTFS or exFAT is not compatible with the USB port on the Time Capsule.
If you have confirmed that the drive is formatted in HFS+ or FAT32 and it still does not appear, you may need to use a powered USB hub with the drive.....even though the drive might have its own power supply.

A HDD attached to the Time Capsule (TC) will not automatically back it up, nor can you configure Time Machine to do so. However, you can use the AirPort Utility to archive the contents of your TC's internal HDD to this attached drive.

And are you using a powered USB hub? The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so you almost always need to use a powered USB hub, even if the hard drive has its own power supply.

Time Machine cannot back up a hard drive that is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
If you want to backup the hard drive, it must be connected to your Mac to be included in Time Machine backups. Additional settings will need to be made if you do this, so post back for details if you need them.
If you cannot connect the drive to your Mac, then you will need to use another backup program like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper or Chronosync to backup the hard drive to the Time Capsule.

Can I connect two usb hard drives to my time capsule?

I have bought a powered usb hub to connect two usa hard drives to my 3rd generation time capsule, as it is written in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2421
I have formatted both hard drives, so now the file system is extended Mac OS (journaled). If I plug the usb hub to my laptop, I can access both hard drives. If I plug it to my time capsule, by no means I can access any disk. If I plug each hard drive directly to the time capsule, I can access each of them. I don't understand! what can be the problem? The file system is ok, the hub is powered and everything is working if I plug it to my laptop. Can anybody help me? Any idea? Thank you in advance!

A hub that works on a Mac does not necessarily work on a Time Capsule.. eg Some Belkin hubs do not work on TC even though they work on the Mac.. The TC having a small amount of ROM memory can only store drivers for a small selection of usb chipsets.. you need to buy a different powered hub..
What ones actually work with TC.. ?? Not sure.. google for success.

Your problem is finding the right one, because even like belkin ones, a 7port might work, because belkin are rebadgers they don't make anything.. so it depends which factory they come from.. for a consumer product like a hub they probably care more about the outside and packaging appearance than the chip used inside. And lets face it.. all they care about in the end is to deliver it for the cheapest price possible to make money out of it.

As Tesserax says, no, Time Machine backups can't "span" two volumes.
But . . . if 2 TB isn't large enough to keep a reasonable "depth" of old backups, you can connect the USB drive and back one of the Macs up to it, instead of the TC's internal HD.
Your best bet is probably to leave the old backups for that Mac on the TC's internal disk, until you're sure you don't need them anymore, since you can view and restore from them via the +*Browse ...+* option (per #17 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions).
It's a hassle, and will take a looooong time, but you could copy the sparse bundle for one of the Macs to the USB drive and continue backing-up to it. See #18 in the FAQ.

I just connected an external hard drive to my Time Capsule.

I have Mountain Lion installed on my 2010 MacBook Pro. The external HD is not showing up. Is there something else I need to do or is it supposed to show up in the sidebar of Finder?

Click the Time Capsule icon in the Finder sidebar on the left.
If the drive is formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), you will see two folders representing the drives.
One is "Data" (unless you have renamed it) representing the Time Capsule drive
The other is your hard drive. Double click it to mount it on the desktop.

Sure is.. The TC cannot use it.. cannot see it or read it.
You need to connect the disk to the Mac, format it HFS+ and make sure it is GUID type disk not MBR windows type. Although you can also use fat32 IMHO that is really backward step.
Windows can still write to it, as the TC or airport can offer SMB to the network.. it is irrelevant the format of a drive plugged in.
The USB port is underpowered in the TC.. even though the hard disk is powered you sometimes need a powered hub.. and not all powered hubs work.
Also note USB is slow.. connected to a network device it is double or triple slow.
It is far better to plug the USB drive straight into the computer and use it in native format to the OS of the computer.

Unfortunately, Time Machine backups that are stored on a drive that has been connected directly to a Mac are completely different than Time Machine backups that are stored on a Time Capsule.
Frankly, it is not worth the effort and trouble to try to transfer the old backups to the new Time Capsule.....my opinion....having done this in the past.
It is possible though, but I would not recommend it due to the complexity and downsides involved with this. To give you an idea of how to do this, check out this support article.

Even if you transfer the "old" backups over to the Time Capsule successfully, Time Machine will not simply "add on" to the old backups.
Time Machine will make a new complete backup of your Mac and then add incremental backups from that point.
My advice.....start a new backup on the Time Capsule and move forward. Keep the USB hard drive around for a month, maybe 2 or 3 in case you need to go back to an old backup for some reason. At that time, you will not likely need the old backups at all since you will have a current 2-3 month history of new backups. At that point, you can erase the USB drive and use it for another purpose.

Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.

Ok if disk utility was able to verify the drive I doubt there is any problem.. are you trying to open a TM backup??
You need to mount the sparsebundle then check the actual info inside the bundle.
Don't use disk warrior.. if the disk has verified then unless you deliberately deleted files there is nothing that is going to do.

But if you have copied info to the TC that is now gone.. and the disk is ok.. I am not sure.. the TC will not have deleted the files itself.

Searching external hard drive attached to Time Capsule

I have a 1 TB Time Capsule which I use for backing up my 2011 MacBook Pro and for providing my WiFi. I also have a 1 TB external hard drive plugged into my Time Capsule which I can access via WiFi. I can go to Finder on my laptop and browse the folders/files on my external hard drive. It appears under Shared in the sidebar of the Finder window. I can open files from it and I can save files to the drive, so it appears to be working fine. I have hundreds of gigs of files on the drive. But when I was recently hunting for a specific file, I noticed that my Spotlight wasn't doing a very good job at finding files on my external hard drive. I tried many different searches - by name, by type, by date - and had no luck. But as I was searching, I realized that I had more files of certain file types than Spotlight was showing me. So I tried searching for files I first confirmed were actually on the external drive. And again Spotlight failed to find them. If I used a partial filename search, it would find some files that matched but not the ones I was looking for.
So, this led me to think the index is corrupt. I'm not sure if this problem is related to my recently upgrading to Lion or not, since I haven't had to search the drive in awhile. I tried to force Spotlight to recreate the index on the drive by using the Privacy panel trick (of the Spotlight Preferences) but that didn't work. I then tried to get Spotlight to recreate its entire index and I think all that did was recreate the index for my internal harddrive.
So, are there things I need to know about attaching an external hard drive to a Time Capsule that I perhaps forgot to do? Should I be able to search the drive with Spotlight? Do I have to somehow force Spotlight to look in external drive when doing a search or is it supposed to search everything it can?
I should mention I have been having a little trouble with my Time Capsule as well. I recently had to erase the drive and set up a whole new backup since the backup was failing - not sure what happened to it, but it seems to be working again now. But I did notice yesterday that my Time Machine hadn't backed up all day but it was not giving me a warning message. It was just sitting there not backing up. I had tried resetting my PRAM and after doing so, my Time Machine was back to backing up. I'm not sure if the PRAM reset helped with that or if it was just the restart of the laptiop.
One more thing - I feel like since upgrading to Lion I have had to restart my laptop more than ever. Things just start acting funny, especially when I am using Safari and I find myself resetting Safari and then restarting my laptop all the time. Odd.

It should be HFS+.. it may work with fat32 but that is a lousy format.
The actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. the TC offers SMB connection.. so it is a true file sharing device.. the format used to store the files cannot be directly read by windows but is "interpreted, translated" via the firmware of the TC.
BTW this is true of all network storage.. A NAS can store files in whatever format its OS requires.. freebsd like freenas might use XFS.. or linux use EXT2 or REISFS.. it makes no difference as long as it offers that store to the windows (and apple) network as SMB.. then windows can handle it.

External hard drives compatible with time capsule generation 3

I am trying to connect a little 160Gb HP hard drive to my time capsule via a hub which also connects successfully a non wireless printer. This particular hard drive uses two usb in's to connect. Once i plug it into time capsule, it powers up, thinks for a while,the wee blue light becomes solid and there it is.
However it does not show up in the finder sidebar under Shared - though i have set preferences to show everything. the hard drive is formatted correctly, and i can access it when i plug it directly into the imac.
am i missing something ? or is it just not compatible with my time capsule ? - perhaps the two usb connections are the cause? i just want to be able to save files and access them on the external hard drive via the network from imac and laptop, instead of having to plug it in to either.....
any help much appreciated...

yep am using a usb hub,time cap. has only the one usb port- yes two usb outs on the hard drive , sorry, which merge into one into the hd, is bus powered...
