Connect Airport wirelessly to WIFI modem

Hi
I have an Airport extreme and want to connect it wirelessly to a Sierra WIFI modem.
the arrangement is WIFI Internet > Sierra WIFI Modem ...... need this link???....> Airport>computers
How do I se up the Airport to "see" the WIFI Model

With the help of AirPort Utility you can configure your AirPort Extreme to "Join a wireless network", when opening the Wireless tab. Although this doesn't extend your Sierra Wifi. The only profit you have of this setup, is to share a harddrive or a printer wirelessly using the Extreme.
The AirPort Extreme isn't capable to extend the wifi of other routers using wireless only. This has to be done using an Ethernet connection between your modem and your AirPort Extreme.

  • Connecting airport extreme, netgear dsl modem, windows 7, and Macbook pro

I'm having a problem connecting my airport extreme to my netgear modem, windows 7 pc and my Macbook Pro.  Until a few days ago, I had a Westell wireless dsl modem and everything worked fine.  Now, the only way I can connect to the internet is through my desktop pc and the hardwired modem.

If your goal is to extend/boost the range of your Netgear router with either or both of the AirPorts, this will not work wirelessly ... at least, not completely by wireless. That is because, WDS is not standard and each manufacturer has had creative license to implement it as they see fit for their products.
Instead, you have at least two other choices to use the Netgear (as the main Internet router) with the AirPorts:
Connect one AirPort directly to the Netgear by Ethernet, and then, configure both AirPorts for an extended wireless network. In this configuration, you would be running two separate wireless networks; one created by the Netgear, and the second the extended network created by the AirPorts.
Connect both AirPorts directly to the Netgear by Ethernet, and then, configure all of the routers for a roaming network. In this configuration, there would be a "single" wireless network where wireless network clients can literally roam from one router to another and still be on the "same" wireless network.

  • Connecting airport express to zyxel modem

I connect to the internet via DSL using a Zyxel 660 HN DSL router. This modem is also the base station of my wireless network. I am now trying to connect my USB Printer (HP LaserJet 1320) to this wireless network using an Airport Express Base Station (Model A1264, 2008). I am able to set up the Airport Express Base Station by connecting it to my MacBookPro with a LAN-cable and using the Airport Utility (Version 6.1). The Airport Express Base Station is then in the proper operating mode (green light on), and my router detects it as one of the WLAN-clients. However, if I connect my printer with the USB cable to the Airport Express Base Station, my computer (which is connected to the WLAN as well) is unable to see the printer. Can anyone give some advice how to solve this problem?
As an aside, I also enabled AirPlay on the Airport Express Base Station, but iTunes on my MacBook is not showing the Speakers button at the bottom of the iTunes window.
Somehow, the Airport Extreme Base Station seems to be connected to the WLAN properly, but it is not recognized by other WLAN clients and its functionality cannot be used. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am going to guess.. you are talking about cable modem.. linksys DPC-3008
You plug express into the ethernet port of the modem.. setup the Express to dhcp for WAN.
Then you need to power cycle the cable modem to get rid of the previous connection.. whatever connected before the express will take the public IP and the modem will not release it until the lease is renewed.. to force that renewal a power cycle of the modem is required.. it can take up to 20min for the ISP equipment to give up the old MAC address and renew the lease.. Some ISP you will even need to phone up and ask them to reset the port.

  • Connecting airport extreme to fios modem

I just connected my Time Capsule to my fios modem. I now have to wireless networks. Does anyone know which one to use and how to disable the other one?
    Thank you.

So your modem probably has integrated WiFi. What you want to do is go to the admin page of your modem and turn off it's WiFi connection. Your Time Capsule can then be the only WiFi providing device on your network.
To know how to find the admin page (an ordinary webpage) of your modem consult the instructions that came with your modem.

  • My mac ibook 800 won't let me conect to a newer wifi modem

my grandpa gave an ibook 800 laptop and i tryed to connect it to my wifi modem but it keeps saying "there was an error connecting to" and then the network name
dont bother answering this question whith "are you shore the password is right" because i know it is i have memorized it by heart and i have had apple products for about 2 years so i know apple fairly well but why whont the darn laptop connect to my wifi!!!!!
(and if your wondering i am righting this from my other laptop which is win7pro)

    Hello,
iBook 800Mhz don't gives us much to go on here. is this a G3 or a G4 model of iBook?
That will make a real difference in what type of wifi security you can connect to. The G3 models have an Airport card, while the G4 have Airport Extreme cards fitted.
If it's a G3 the likelihood is, your trying to connect to a wifi that has a security encryption of WPA2 and it wont work. It could only connect to WEP or WPA. You can test this by simply turning off the security encryption and your find it will connect fine.
If it's a G4 then it could connect to WPA/WPA2 encryption. This could indicate another software related problem or an IP address allocation problem from the router.
Let us know what model of iBook you have and we will be sure to give you further advise.

  • Recently bought airport Extreme and have connected the device to the modem. WIFI works. However when I connect the LAN port to a switch I do not see the LAN printer and my NAS. Which setting do I miss?

I have installed my Airport Extreme and have conencted it directly to a modem. WIFI works fine. However I do not see my LAN network (printer. NAS,..).
    Analysis:
Scen#1: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a switch (as input) and connect the other LAN devices also to the switch, those LAN devices do not have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the Airport Extreme I cannot find my LAN printer and other devices.
Scen#2: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a router X (as input) and connect the router X to the same switch, and the LAN devices to the switch, those LAN devices do have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the router X I can find my LAN printer and other devices in the LAN network.
Question what has impacted the behaviour of the Airport Extreme, not to detect the devices in the LAN network. Why is the use of a switch directly behind the Airport Extreme not working (no internet access for the other devices and Airport Extreme is not the basis station for the LAN network)?

Your scenario #1 is a correct configuration and should work. It seems as though your Extreme is not acting as a router as I believe you intend.
Most likely, you need to reset your modem. Power it down and let it rest for a few moments. Some need longer than others. Then, I recommend you "hard reset" your Extreme (see below) and configure it again, after the modem has been reset. From then on do not change what is connected to your modem without powering it down first.
Once configured, confirm your Extreme's wireless network works as expected and that your iPad and every other wireless device can load web pages. Then, connect the printer directly to one of the Extreme's LAN ports and confirm that it works as well. After that it should work equally well with a switch between it and the Extreme, as should every other wired device connected to the switch. This assumes your switch is an unmanaged device requiring no specific configuration.
Scenario #2: Having a router connected downstream of another is not a normal configuration, so don't pursue that as a solution. It will only distract you from determining the problem. If you want to repurpose Router X as another device do so only after everything else is working to your satisfaction.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.

  • Do I need to setup my AirPort Express on a modem before trying to connect it wirelessly to my time capsule existing network?

I have an airport express that I used in another location.  I brought it home and want to use it with my existing network and time capsule to do AirTunes.  I can't get the Express to show up in my airport utility to even set it up.  Do I need to connect it to my time capsule with an ethernet cable first to configure, or should it be showing up as a device to add to my network automatically?

    1. i would restore the express to factory defaut by holding the reset button on the unit with a paperclip while you are powering it on
    2. if it restored, you should be able to see it in your wifi icon at top of screen as "airport express"
or you can see it in airport utility
    3. then if you want to connect it wirelessly to your time capsule, you would choose "extend network" and put in relevant security and password....this would make the express a wireless access point, fed by your time capsule(main router)
if you chose to do it wired which is a better way if you have access to ethernet port at wall, you would choose "create a wireless network" and then under the "network" tab you would choose "Bridge Mode".....this would make the express a wired access point, fed by your time capsule(main router)

I'm not familiar with your router but are there any buttons on the front or back of it because sometimes you need to pair the router in order for your PC, laptop, phone or iPad to connect wirelessly with it?
From the routers I have used there are normally two buttons on the front or back (apart from the power button), pressing one of them allows you a few minutes to enter the required password on your iPad. Best look at the instructions for the router.

  • HT4145 How can I use an Airport Extreme to act as a Range Extender for an Alcatel One Touch Y800Z WiFi modem/router? I get a message saying it cannot be extended. Thank you. Arup

How can I use an Airport Extreme to act as a Range Extender for an Alcatel One Touch Y800Z WiFi modem/router? As we live in a rural area and our landline broadband speeds are awful, I have moved on to a 3G provider in the UK (EE/Orange) and set up the wireless modem which is working very well with an iMac. I have an Airport Extreme base station which was previously connected with an Ethernet cable to the landline router, and two Airport Express stations as Range Extenders. I would now like to use the Airport Extreme and the two Express stations to extend the range of the Alcatel WiFi device. I have tried automatic and manual set up with the Airport Utility but at the crucial step for selecting a network to extend, although the WiFi device is recognised, I get a message saying it cannot be extended.
Thank you for any help you can provide.
    Arup

This is a problem with a lot of cheap end wifi hotspot like devices.. sometimes you can just swap the sim out to a real 3G wireless router.. that is a better approach IMHO than wireless repeater ever will be.
    In the meantime..
Have a go with the suggestion.. place the express as wireless bridge. With a computer connected to the wifi from alcatel unit.. (I am amazed Alcatel still are in domestic market.. I thought they sold out). Set the express to join the wifi.. you do this in the airport utility.. old one is easy.. but in v6 you have to trust to luck so to speak and hope the auto setup works.. tell us if you have trouble.
With the Express bridging.. you can then plug it by ethernet into the TC.. which will be in router bridge..
    ie
You can then run the connection from wireless or ethernet on the TC.. and it will relay back to the alcatel for internet.. all a bit dodgy but who knows.. it may give you what you need.
Wireless repeater is never particularly reliable in my experience. I would avoid it if possible.

  • Safest settings to connect airport extreme A1354 to DSL modem

I want to connect my DSL modem  (Motorolla 3347) to my Airport extreme (A1354) which will be used as a base for connecting multiple wireless devices.
I would preferr not to bridge the airport. What are the safest settings to select on the airport for wifi security and most function using airplay?
    Thanks.

I would preferr not to bridge the airport.
In that case, you would need to check to see if the Motorola modem/router can possibly be configured to act as a simple bridge mode modem. If it can, then the AirPort can be configured to act as the main router for the network handling DHCP and NAT services.
Next check with your ISP to make sure that they will support you for this type of configuration.
IF....the modem can be configured to operate as a simple bridge...and IF....your ISP will support this type of setup, then the AirPort Extreme needs be configured to Connect Using = PPPoE.
The safest settings for Wi-Fi are WPA2 Personal, also known as WPA2-PSK-AES with a long password comprised of random letters and numbers.
AirPlay does not care what type of connection that you have as long as the signal is strong enough.

  • Macbook not connecting to wifi modem

I am unable to connect to my wifi modem using my Macbook Pro airport utility. The modem was attached as preferred network and was working fine till yesterday. As soon as the mac was switched on, it used to connect to the modem immediately. Now, I am not able to connect by creating a new connection. It is refusing to connect to the modem wirelessly, whereas other devices (Laptop/Phones) are still connecting to the said modem easily. It is surprising that I am able to connect to the modem using ethernet. All the more surprising, though I am connected to internet while typing my quary, I am unable to connect to APP STORE and i get an error message "App Store cannot verify a secure connection with the App Store. Do you wish to continue?" Can somebody help?

Can you connect to any other wireless network?
