Connect an iPod to an external drive?

Apple's biggest iPod still isn't big enough to house my entire media collection.  I figure I need about 1.5 TB.  Can an iPod Classic be connected to an external hard drive without a computer involved?  ie, just the iPod wired to a drive?

Doing that won't achieve anything.

  • IPod Shuffle 2nd + external drive

    Hi,
I've experienced a problem with connecting ipod to computer while using external hdd. First time it occured when i had my iAudio X5L (with Toshiba 30GB hdd) connected to a computer. Second time when i had my Toshiba 500GB external hdd drive connected. At the moment i plugged ipod in, drive became unavailable and ipod wasnt properly recognised. When i dont have any other drive connected to computer, everything works fine.Any help?

Help! I have exactly the same problem. Recently purchased an ipod shuffle 2nd gen but cannot get it to work.
I have more music files than my computer's internal hard drive has space for so have been using a USB external drive for more than a year with no problems with my 60GB ipod photo. When I plug in the shuffle and try to transfer songs however the hard drive shuts down and no files are copied. I have tried updating ipod and itunes software and resetting, then changing drive letters (external drive now Z:) and switching ports but none of this works.
So far I have been very pleased with ipod / itunes. Hope this issue won't end up changing my opinion.

  • After connecting my itunes library (on external drive) to another laptop iphone no longer recognized

I'm hoping to get some help on a matter of 'portability' of my itunes library.
My itunes library resides at work attached to my MacBook Pro 17" running 10.7.5 but on an external USB drive.
Using iTunes 10.7 on Macbook Air and 11.1 on MacbookPro (to which the iTunes library is normally attached from the USB drive).
I bought a Macbook Air to travel with also running 10.7.5.
I connected the external drive (where the itunes library resides) now that I'm away from from the office to the Macbook Air, changed the itunes media location to the external USB drive itunes library, with "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organised" and "Copy files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to my library" then did the File/Library/Organise Library/Consodilate Files function.
Alas, my iphone when connected to the MacBook Air is still not recognised on sync. I want to be able to back-up my iphone when not at the office (but not to the iCloud, to a local drive). Is this possible?
    Thanks very much!

If you restore the iPod you will delete the files, so don't do it unless you have backups. Sorry I don't know about the error code.

  • Using an iPod Classic as external drive problem

    Hey,
I'm new to having an iPod, and I'd like to use it as an external drive. I've selected to enable disk use in iTunes, and applied it, and it says in iTunes I have plenty of free space. However, when I go to Windows Explorer and try to transfer a file, it says the disk is full. Any ideas as to why this is occuring and how to fix it would be much appreciated.

You cannot put a file that is 4GB or larger onto a Windows formatted iPod due to limitations of the FAT32 format used by those iPods.

  • HT4527 Is there any way to copy content of iPod to an external drive without having the Id and password on the device?

I am afraid I will lose content if I plug in to my laptop. I have aquired a used iPod Classic and want to keep some of the content on my external drive to merge with my existing account. Is there any way to do so. All of my research points to needing to authorize my computer first, but I do not have that info. Thanks for any help.

You are not entitled to the content of the device. Wipe it out and start afresh.

  • Syncing iPod Touch Causes External Drive Disconnection

This is a really bizarre problem. I am unable to sync my iPod Touch. Once it goes to copy the first song (whatever it is -- this is not a file issue), my computer ejects my external hard drive and stops the sync. It then takes roughly 5 - 10 minutes to finish the sync (though put no new material on it).
I have to unplug my external drive then replug it to be recognized.
I've tried removing all music from iPod, which worked fine. But now I still can't put anything on it. I checked and have the latest software on both iTunes and the iPod. I've done simple stuff like restarting. Any ideas?

  • How do I back up my iPod to an external drive?

I need to back up my iPod and then recover all the info once I restore it.  Having problems and don't want to lose any of my books/songs/movies.  I have an external tetra drive that I am using for the back up.

  • Installing ipod software on external drive

My computer belongs to my employer - who has a "no personal files" policy. I'm looking at alternatives so that I can install a new and use a new ipod. All start-up instructions refer to the computer - presumably the hard drive. Instead, can I purchase an external hard drive and install new ipod and apple software on it to operate the ipod without ANYTHING being installed on the computer's hard drive? If so, can I also store my music library that way? Essentially I want to operate the ipod "offline" without storing any traceable files on my hard disk. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

iTunes needs to be installed on the startup disk; few Windows applications are designed for portable use. If the computer is a Mac, a higher percentage of the applications can be run from a disk other than the startup disk, but iTunes still requires system components.
Doing what you want isn't possible unless you have a full installation of Windows or Mac OS X if applicable on that drive.

  • Connecting old Fire wire 400 External Drive with no FW 800 ports, how?

I have a fire wire 400 drive and so i switched to mac pro which doesn't have 400 things. so i can't connect it.
    ANyway to do it?

Firewire 800 is fully backwards compatible with Firewire 400. You need a "bilingual" firewire cable or adapter to plug the Firewire 400 drive in your Firewire 800 port.

  • Using iPod as an external drive

I have been using 1/2 of my ipod memory to transfer avi and mpeg files from my old computer to my new computer. It has worked very well, but recently when I try to copy the files from my ipod to my new computer it says "cannot copy: parameter is incorrect" The files won't play either. So, now they are stuck on my ipod... I am nervous to restore the ipod because I don't want to lose the files. PLEASE HELP! Thanks!

If you restore the iPod you will delete the files, so don't do it unless you have backups. Sorry I don't know about the error code.

  • Help with: itunes, ipad2, ipod, a reformated hard drive and an external drive.

    Help!!!
I have an acient 64GB hard drive PC and a 1TB external drive.  I have copies of my itunes for my ipad2 , and my hubs itunes for his ipod in the external drive.  The 64GB crashed because it was so full that the virus program couldn't even run... so long story short I now have a re-formatted hard drive with 48.4GB of free space.
My question is how do I go about getting my itunes and hubs itunes back on to the reformatted drive?  or is it possible to leave the itunes on my external drive and have both our devices boot to the external drive when they are connected to bypass the ancient hard drive all together as I don't wish to ever overload that thing again.....
    Thanks

  • Using ipod as external drive

    Notice by apple:
Do not format iPod to erase songs or playlists
Do not use a disk utility program, such as Disk Utility, Drive Setup, or Windows Explorer, to erase iPod. Erasing songs from iPod this way can disable its music playing capabilities and you may have to update or restore iPod to get it to work again.
Okay, So If I want to use the ipod as an external drive and I use explorer to copy files to ipod and erase the same way, there should be no problem right? I think what they are talking about is the actual files that are encoded that ipod copies and puts in organized directories...
Anyone tried coping exe files or other files using ipod as a hard drive? Why? I wanted to copy itunes to the ipod for when I travel to another location to just copy that program to the hard drive and install there to a computer w/o internet connnection...
      Windows XP Pro

Put the iPod into Disk Mode and you can copy any files to the HD. Music files copied this way will not be able to be played on the iPod, though. Always transfer music via iTunes.
It will just take up space that could be used by music files (but that's pretty obvious).
You should have little problem doing what you propose.

  • Ubuntu on ipod as external drive

I have no idea if this is where I should put this, but here goes:
Ubuntu is on my iPod as an external drive. While it will boot to a pc that has both windows and ubuntu on it, it will not boot to my mac, because my mac won't recognize it as an external drive. Any suggestions?
(A friend of mine is the one who set up ubuntu on the ipod, using my mac)
I have posted this same question in the Ubuntu forums. Please help me.

if you go to iTunes and enable the iPod for hard drive use then you can boot from it, to boot from it on the mac hold down the option key on start-up, and then you can boot from it if ubuntu is compatible on mac. because Mac is built on Darwin, a build of unix, that might be the problem. what you could do is partition your mac hard drive and install it on the other partition instead of having it sit on your iPod.
