Connect Apple TV to standard - non flat screen non HD TV??????

Has anyone connected their Apple TV to a bog standard CRT style TV?????
Please tell me how?? ..... Before I invest

If you have the basement bog standard crt, you will watch squashed pictures in black and white.
If you have a middle bog standard crt that allows 16:9 to be played at proper resolution, you will watch in black and white.
If you have the other middle bog standard crt that has component, your squashed picture will be in colour.
If you have the top bog standard crt with component and allows 16:9 to be played at proper resolution, then your laughing, provided your happy with 480/576i.
There are some tricks and some tricky boxes that can help out, but it generally involves some messin' and an appearance of your wallet at some tricky store.

  • I intend to purchase a Mac Mini and connect to a regular (not smart) flat screen TV and use such as monitor. Can this setup also allow access to Netflix or Apple movies or an Apple TV is also required?

I intend to purchase a Mac Mini and connect to a regular (not Smart) flat screen TV that will be as such a large monitor. With this setup do I require an additional Apple TV to watch programs from Netflix, Apple Store movies, Y-tube etc?

You can view NetFlix and YouTube via their websites on a Mac computer. You can purchase/play iTunes movies and other thing via iTunes on the Mac.

Hi I had same problems and couldn't understand most of the solutions on offer as I'm a bit of a Luddite. The problem seems to be getting ATV to register your network time and date details following the upgrade of software. I use a wireless connection at home and my firewall was blocking the ATV from obtaining this information. Instead of changing router settings, firmware etc (which is beyond me) I solved it this way:
    1. Rather than use my existing wireless connection I connected the ATV to my iPhone personal hotspot (iPhone has 3G connection). It may be another network could also be effective.
    2. ATV connected via the iPhone no problem apparently got the network time and date settings ok.
    3. The previous ATV functionality was restored.
    3. I then disconnected from my iPhone hotspot and re-connected to my main wireless connection. All worked fine.
It seems what you need to do is side-step the router firewall problem. Hope it works for others.

  • How to connect three pieces together -macbook - large flat screen - tablet

What is the best way to connect the following?
    Mac Book Pro
    Large FLat Display
    Wacom cintiq tablet
Can I have flat display and wacom table at same time?
    Any tip?

    Thank you A Brody,
This is all very helpful to a guy like me.
I guess the first thing I'll have to do is get an ethernet cable. Presumably, the FireWire cable will not be needed now. Correct?
The same questions still seem to apply. I did print out the "Connecting two computers using Ethernet" that you forwarded to me.
    1) But, do I power up both computers before installing Ethernet cable?
    2) After following instructions on the"Connecting two computers....." will an icon appear for the old Power Mac?
    3) After hooking up the Ethernet cable, do I have to re-boot, use the "T" key, to get into the old Power Mac?
    4) After fiddling around on the old Power Mac, how do I get out of there and back onto my i.Mac?
    5) Or, because it would be hooked up via Ethernet, could I simply go back and forth between the two computers?
By the way, after checking out your info on how to identify my old Power Mac, this is the info I've been able to glean, I think:
    The old Power Mac is:
    • A Power Mac G4 (PCI Graphics)........and therefore, it says, not able to serve as a target computer backup with my i.Mac
    • Apparently made in 1999
    • System, apparently, is OS 8.6 (my i.Mac is OS X 10.3.9...Panther)
    • Model number either M7631 or M7826 (can't find it on the computer)
    • Memory: PC 100 SDRAM, up to 1 GB (don't know how much it has now)
    • I have no idea how much storage is available (i.e. my i.Mac is 74.5 GB (I think)
    Thanking you again

  • Connecting Apple optical drive to non-Apple PC

    Hello!
I couldn't find a proper place for this question so I have came to this forum.
I have Apple optical USB drive (not sure what model, it is the slim, nice looking one) which I need to connect to a Windows XP laptop. I tried with few PC's without success.
I am also not sure about how much pressure should I apply to a DVD when inserting it into this drive. Must it be powered on while inserting DVD?
Thank you very much in advance!

    trhbtr,
That drive requires more power through a usb port than is normally available. That's why it's only supported on the MBair and the Mac Mini. Your PC probably doesn't supply enough power. I wouldn't try inserting a DVD with it powered off. It has assist features that grab the DVD and insert it properly when powered on.

Your Powerbook has a DVI video-out port, and the best video quality will be obtained by connecting that port to the HDMI port on your television, using an adapter cable with the appropriate male/female ends. Google "DVI to HDMI adapter" to find suppliers online, or go to your local electronics big-box store (take your Powerbook along) and find one there. Note that DVI and HDMI cables don't carry audio, so you'll need to cable the audio from the Powerbook to the TV set separately.

  • How to connect Macbook Pro to Samsung Flat Screen TV

How do i connect my Macbook Pro (2-3 years ago) to Samsung Flat screen TV (Samsung UN22F5000 22-Inch 1080p 60Hz Slim LED HDTV). Currently, I just discovered that my HDMI port on the TV said "DVI". So, i came to the conclusion that I need to get the DVI to HDMI cable (male-male), and mini display-port to DVI (female) adapter cable for Macbook Pro. The question is am I correct?
I have tried looking at the back of the Samsung flat screen, but there has no VGA to PC port (female). Therefore, i googled and tried to find a way to connect my Mac to the Samsung flat screen TV. As i mentioned above, I came to the conclusion that I need those things. I just want to make sure that my assumption is correct. Thank you

    Dear Varjak Paw,
Thank you for replying to this topic. Yes, it is true that there are 2 HDMI ports. However, one of the HDMI ports has something written on it, which is (HDMI In 1 STB). While, the other one stated "HDMI In 2 DVI". Moreover, I tried to plug in the HDMI cable into HDMI In 2 DVI, and it doesn't fit. While, plugging in to the STB does fit. Do you know what are the differences?
    Thank you
    Sincerely yours,

can I connect the digital output of flat screen to digital stereo output?

    Hello JRefugio,
    Welcome to the Sony Community.
Are you referring to a Sony flat screen TV? What is the model number of the device to which you wish to connect the digital output from the flat screen? It is required to know the exact model number of the Sony product so that the appropriate information can be provided.
    Thank you for your post.

Not sure that I have selected the correct forum.  Hope my questions are clearly stated.
Having problems connecting iMac(late 2006) running 10.7.5 to a Samsung Flat Screen TV using separate audio/speaker cable and HDMI standard cable, mini-DVI to HDMI video converter.  TV displays generic Apple galaxy background and "some" windows (e.g. screen resolution choices).   It does not show Mail or Safari menus.  System preferences'  display "gathered" the Samsung and chose its resolution.  I did not find a way to select the Samsung as my display.
In addition to having old hardware, we have Verizon FIOS providing internet and TV access.  Is there any way to make this work for us?  We would like to stream video (Netflix) and view shows from the Web.  Do we need Apple TV to do this?  Or is it not possible with our old iMac?  My husband thinks that our Airport could be a factor.
    Thank you

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of posts with users trying to use their Macs/iMacs to mirror their streaming video from their Macs to an HDTV.
There are, actually, many alternatives to choose from than just from a Mac.
You need to have or invest in a WiFi capable router for all of these examples.
Apple TV only integrates with WiFi and newer Mac hardware. So, if you want to have total integrated experience, if you have a 2011 Mac or newer, you might as well pay the $100 for the AppleTV box.
If you have a older Mac, like I have noticed many users do, then you have other options.
If you want to elimate long cable clutter and having your Mac at the mercy of your TV all of the time,  you can still use the AppleTV box independently or purchase cheaper alternative media streaming boxes from Roku, Sony, Boxee or any number of electronics manufacturers that now have media streaming boxes and media streaming capability built into DVD/Blu-ray players.
These eliminate long cable clutter by being close to the HDTV where shorter, less expensive cables can be used.
Another alternative for iPad users is to use an iPad with the USB/HDMI video adapter and use your iPad as the streaming box. This ties up your iPad in much the same way as it does with your Mac, but again the iPad can be close to the TV and use minimal cables to the TV.
Another alternative to is to use a combination of an iPad and your Mac to stream content that is only available to stream online from a computer. In this case, you can use a desktop remote app on your iPad and Mac. A good and cheap Desktop Remote app is Splashtop Remote. This allows you to completely connect your iPad remotely, over Wifi, to your iMac desktop. The app streams both video and sound to the iPad which is still connected to your HDTV. The resultant stream video picture will be smaller than the size of your HDTV, but it will still be plenty large enough to watch. Again, if you own a iPad and an Intel Mac, this method also allows minimal cabling to the TV.

  • Connect to VGA-flat screen monitor ?

my ibook G3 (dual USB) has a RGB display, out , I m not sure which adapter to get to have to connect to a standard dell VGA-flat screen monitor ?
    second question:
how do you increase screen brightness? it is so dim, have to squint to see screen

It takes a VGA (RGB) cable to connect to an external monitor.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2721?viewlocale=en_US
As for the second question, have you tried resetting the PMU? The PMU (Power Management Unit) has control over the backlight function, so resetting it may help.

  • I just bought a recertified Mac Mini, and I wonder if anyone here knows if it's possible to hook up my Mac flat screen LCD monitor to it using what adapters? I currently have a DVI to ADC adapter connected to my G4 Powermac.

I just bought a recertified Mac Mini core duo - it's not the newer model-, and I wonder if anyone here knows if it's possible to hook up my Mac flat screen LCD monitor to it  and using what adapters? I currently have a DVI to ADC adapter connected to my G4 Powermac.
The company I bought it from is not Apple, and I may regret that. It was in my price range, though.
This is the first time I've used this community, and I've been a Mac owner since 2000. Thanks in advance!

when you say "Mac flat screen LCD", do you mean this:

  • Apple Digital AV Adapter - DVI port on Dell flat screen?

What do I need to connect my iPad 2 to my Dell 24" flat screen monitor?  I have the Apple Digital AV Adapter and use it for my HDTV.
Can it somehow be adapted for the Dell monitor?

Chances are the Dell monitor is the way you described since it's a few years old.  After writing this yesterday, I hooked up the iPad 2 to my HDTV and was blown away! If I have to be "tethered" to something, it's much better that it's the HDTV. (Infinity Blade, Angry Birds, Fishdom H2O and Astraware Casino) - I was up late into the night with these.
Thank you for the fast answer!

  • Plugging apple Flat screen in mac mini.

I have just ordered a mac mini and want to plug and 'older' mac 17 inch flat screen into it, the clear bezel one, i.e. the flat screen which was out just before the current range.
It occurs to me this has an ADC connection, would I be right in guessing the really stupidly expensive adaptor apple offers is the only way to hook this up?

Unless you can find a cheaper 3rd party alternative, yes you do need the huge (apparently it's as big as your mini) and hugely expensive Apple DVI to ADC Display Adapter. The unfortunate part of ADC is that the video component is no more than s-video.

  • Why have my videos stopped playing on my older Apple flat screen 2nd display ?

Recently my videos , tv shows, etc.  have not been able to play on my older Apple flat screen 2nd display. I had been using the display to watch video on a second display while I work on my 2010 iMac. I thought standard defintion videos would be fine on the 2nd display. Now I get an error message telling me to move the itunes window to the main display (where they play fine but get in the way of  my work.

    Hi
    DVD-burners get's old
If You burn more than three DVDs in a row without pause to let DVD-Laser cool down - they grow older faster or even over-feat and die. My get's 20-30 minutes to cool down.
Free space on Start-Up hard disk - use to give problems - I never go under 25Gb free space when doing SD-Video and 4-5 times more if HD-material is used
Material feed into iDVD - there are more and more codecs coming and iDVD is picky. Some it can back-engineer to a working form - others not. A while ago this was no problem but as Cameras evolves this gives more and more problems. I convert all my material into a few working codecs/file formats as
    • Video - AIC or streamingDV
    • Photos - only as .jpg (Never .bmp)
    • Audio - only .aiff (Never .mp3, .wma etc)
Forced or Panic Halts - introduces small errors (most often into the application pref. file) and builds up a coming disaster. Trashing this from time to time prevent's this and make application run better.
    Just my spontaneous thoughts.

  • Exactly what cables and hardware do I need to connect my early-2008 MacBook Pro to a flat-screen TV monitor to have both video and audio?

    Hello--
I'm trying to figure out how to connect my 15" MacPro Book from early 2008 to a Sony flat screen TV monitor. I've been told I need a "Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter" and a "HDMI to HDMI" cable, but I've also been reading that some cables only work with 2010 & 2011 laptops and that I may need additional cable/hardware to obtain audio. Could someone advise me on exactly what products I need to purchase?
    Thank you!

Which MacBook Pro 15" do you have?
With the silver keyboard (Early 2008)) or that one with a black keyboard (Late 2008)?
If you habe the Late 2008 you can use a miniDisplay Port + Audio to HDMI like that one (stereo sound) or that one (5.1).
If you have the Early 2008, it's not so easy, because you need a DVI + Audio to HDMI like that one (the Audio Channels had to be converted to Coaxial!) So much more adapters! Maybe there is a manufaturer which has the all in one solution)
Both MacBook Pro DOESN'T support audio on the video output! The later ones (Mid 2010 and later) supports Audio output within the miniDisplay Port.
