"Connect as . . . " and USB drives

Using Leopard, I use to be able to connect to a remote computer using a Admin user login information and get access to the USB drives connected to my Mac Pro. Now with Snow Leopard, I only have access to the startup drive. Is there any way to re-enable the sharing of external USB hard drives in Snow Leopard?

With Leopard, I never had to add the external USB drive to the Sharing System Preference panel. Just in case, I opened the Get Info window for the USB drive and selected "Share Folder." After doing so, the drive appeared in the Sharing System Preference panel. Unfortunately, it did not help.
My Mac Pro has two internal drives and two external drives. I am connecting to it from my Macbook on the road using Back to My Mac. I can see the Mac Pro and can connect to it, but when I do, I can only access the Mac Pro's start up disk. The other internal and both external drives are not available.
Just in case it has something to do with the WAN (though it always worked fine with Leopard), I used Back to My Mac to view the screen of a Mac Mini I also have on my home network. Taking control of the Mac Mini, I used the Finder to connect to my Mac Pro. Though both the Mini and the Mac Pro are on the same network, I still only have access to the Mac Pro's start up disk.

  • HT1349 very slow external HDD and usb drive connected to Apple Extreme Router

    Hello
    So I got a western digital USB drive (500gig) and western digital Live 2TB.
    I bought a new Apple Extreme router and connected them both.
    USB drive and external hdd (WD Live 2TB) very slow when connected to Apple Extreme Router, using Lion 10.7 and updated both firmware for router, western digital and Airport Utility.
    Slow means, it takes half an hour to copy 200 Mb of file to the WD Live 2TB, and its connected to my router with a gigabit ethernet cable!
    Is someone else having the same problem, I thought even over usb I should get around 2-5mb range.
    I am using Macbook Pro and 802.11n with Lion 10.7.2
    Please Help

    The USB WD 500 gig is connected to the Airport Extreme using a non-powered USB 2.0 hub, only two things a HP printer and the 500 gig is connected through it. I already formatted it to MAC OS Extended Journalled. ANd I think the speed didnt change.
    For the WD 2TB Live I didnt format it to anything, started using it out of the box. I just updated its firmware. I was having the same speed even when I directly connected it to my Mac Book Pro using ethernet gigabit cable.
    This WD 2TB Live doesnt have any USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 connectors, just the ethernet cable. I wasnt planning to carry it around. Just wanted to use it as a good ol NAS. So then I saw the fix somewhere and connected to this drive via AFP,  afp://MyBookLive._afpovertcp._tcp.local/Public and it become suddenly very fast. Just like how it should be, I easily copied 20 gigs in around 20-25 minutes. (This was dirctly connected to my computer)
    So then I thought my problem is solved and disconnected my WD Live and connected it back to the Apple Router again, and the speed became very slow again. Now both the USB 500 gig and this 2TB Live are slow.
    Time machine is also very slow.
    Thing is I also have a linux and windows machine(in repair, but should be up soon), Since apple is the newest computer I have, I want to make it work on this first. I dont want to use the MACosx journaled on the 2TB right now. Besides formatting the USB 500 gig to this format didnt help with my speed. So the problem can be elsewhere.
    - I will try to get a powered USB hub as woodmeister50 suggested.
    - I dont know how to connect via iCloud as cigame suggested
    Please let me know if you guys have any suggestions. I have tested and returned enough routers in past few weeks. I really want it to work on this combination LionOSX + Airport Extreme + WD Live.
    Thanks

  • Connecting Time Machine USb drive to Time Capsule and continuing backups?

    I've been backing up my iMac to an external HDD while I waited to get my TC replaced (blew the PSU about a month ago and I've been lazy about getting it fixed). Now that my replacement 500Gb TC has arrived, I'd like to continue with the current TM backup I have. Can I simply unplug the USb drive from the iMac and plug it into the USB port on the back of the TC? I know I can backup to the drive from scratch, but I want to be able to continue using the backup I already have. I know Time Machine over wired/wireless uses a sparsebundle instead and that a USb doesn't, so will there be an issue?
    (And the reason I want to move the external in the first place is to free up some space on my desk)

    You can probably do that, if there's enough room on the disk for two copies of your backups, or if you have a second disk you can use, but it's a bit tricky and will take a long time.
    See #18 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
    If your current backups are case-ignorant, however, the procedure there won't work "as is". You'll have to either change the sparse bundle that Time Machine makes, or use a special Terminal command to copy your backups into the default sparse bundle.
    So your best bet is probably to simply erase the drive and let TM start fresh. And if your USB drive doesn't have it's own power supply, you'll probably want to use a powered hub.

  • E4200 and USB Drive 2.0 help

    Hi I have owned a E4200 since the day it was released. I just now today bought an external drive to connect to it though.
    I bought a Seagate 1.5T GoFlex Desk which is on the list of compatible drives.
    My question is.
    I connected it and it is working, the problem is that the router says it is connected with USB1.1 not USB2.0.
    Major problem as the transfer speeds are only 662KB/s as is.
    Both the router and the Seagate say they use USB 2.0 but for whatever reason the router doesnt seem to recognize this.
    What can I do in order to force the router to see the 2.0 connection?
    Thanks for any help

    Make sure you are using a usb 2.0 capable cable and you could try unplugging the router and HDD power supply for 30seconds, then try plugging them back in and see what you get.
    I don't work for Cisco. I'm just here to help.

  • Winpe and USB drive, can one be mapped?

    I am creating a reference disk in Virtualbox that is Win7 and customized with the applications I would like for a standard image. I am trying to capture the image using imagex which is being loaded from an iso file. I first tried just writing the wim file
    to the VMs drive to later copy it to wherever I wanted it. I got to 90% and then it failed because of insufficient disk space. I didn't try writing the wim to a network repository because I already attempted that and the network connections are too slow, something
    not in my control. Is there a way to get Winpe to recognize a USB hard drive? Alternatively is it perhaps possible to "network" the write of the wim file to a folder on the host computer? I realize this is somewhat a mixed question between MS Winpe
    and Oracle Virtualbox, I so want to move to HyperV! Thanks for any help :)

    Hi! Ive been using virtualbox for many years to create my image. Please make sure you install the "Guest Additions". This will enable you to insert a usb and you will have to go to devices-->usb devices and select your usb drive in WinPE mode.... This
    will allow you to choose the correct drive letter using imagex.

  • Lost connection to Airport USB drive

    I have a MyBook USB drive connected to an AirPort Extreme Base Station (n). It has worked fine for months and could be seen from a MacBook and a Win XP Home SP2 computer.
    On the XP computer, I updated to iTunes 7.3. As far as I can tell, that's the only thing that's changed in the last week. Ever since, XP cannot connect to the network drive.
    If I restart the computer, it tries to connect and asks for a password. I enter the correct password, but it still won't connect. I've also tried a System Restore, but still no luck. The computer is wired to the AirPort and I still have internet access.
    Any ideas? Is it possible that the problem is related to the iTunes upgrade or is it something else?
    Thanks,
    Doug

    I also have the same problem. I have a MacBook and Windows XP desktop both upgraded to iTunes 7.3.1. MacBook works find with iTunes, XP will cause the airdisk to disconnect whenever i start itunes. I can get the airdisk back by logging on to it and restarting the basestation. But as soon as I start iTunes on XP is disconnects again.
    I have uninstalled iTunes, reinstalled it, tried to rollback to an earlier save point and version. But so far nothing has worked. I cant even figure out why itunes would even know about the airdisk since i changed the settings on iTunes to use the C drive instead of the airdisk (Z drive).
    Not had much luck searching the web for people with similar problems either... except this thread.
    Have you guys found a solution yet?

  • Aebs and usb drive

    I want to consolidate two itunes libraries into one on a usb drive connected to my aebs to sync with my atv. What would be ideal would for the usb drive to be able to work with time machine also but i guess the only way that would happen at this point would be to purchase time capsule and i think i will wait and see if able gets this fixed first. So if i hook my usb drive to the aebs how do i get it seen by my imac and my macbook pro? I have seen the post on how to get the itunes libraries there from both, or at least i think if i follow the post on moving itunes libraries i can get them there. Then if i sync my atv to the new itunes library or itunes account all should be good i hope. Two users one library.

  • Connect to a USB drive linked to my wireless router (non airport express)?

    Hi,
    i have a USB drive (FAT32) connected directly to my wireless router and I want to connect to the drive from my powerbook. I am able to mount the drive via an ftp link, however the quality of this connection is not as good - iTunes is not able to pick up all my songs saved on the drive.
    Does anyne know a better way to connect to this drive. Id like to keep it connected to the wireless router so that the drive and the information is available to everyone on my home network.
    The router is a Netgear WGT634U.
    Thanks

    Yep tried that. but it gives an error and cant connect. (get an error 36 or a login error - but i know the username and password are correct)

  • Webcam and usb drive not working--possible hardware issue?

    Hello,
    I recently purchased a Lenovo ideapad U510 with Windows 8. I bought it as a returned machine but the Staples employee didn't know why it had been returned and thought it was just because the buyer didn't like Windows 8. When I first set it up I kept getting an error message that my usb device was not recognized, even though I had never plugged anything in. As I was leaving the country, I dismissed the issue and decided to deal w/ it when I returned to the US, since my other usb drives worked fine.
    However, later my integrated webcam stopped working as well. It worked one time when I used Skype but not after that. I checked online forums for possible solutions, and most said I needed to download an updated driver. I didn't think this was the issue b/c when I went to device manager and tried to update my driver for the easycam, it said I already had the most up-to-date driver. I have uninstalled drivers, downloaded and re-installed drivers, and even refreshed my computer, all to no avail.
    Here are the error messages I receive:
    In device manager>view>show hidden devices>imaging devices>Lenovo EasyCamera, device status says
    Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)
    To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.
    When I try to run the Bison setup: Lenovo EasyCam has not found!
    When I try to run the Chicony setup: Setup failed! Please Plugin camera and install driver again!
    So, I'm thinking it's not a driver issue, but I'm not a techie and don't know what else it could be. Wondering if the usb problem and webcam problem are connected. Found another forum post that said maybe the webcam is not connected to the motherboard...suggestions?
    Thank you in advance for your help.

    I am certain it is a hardware issue from the problems youre describing. I would contact Lenovo. They may try to have you purchase their "software" support, but don't let them. I had wifi issues and they tried to make me spend $90 because I was too lazy to figure it out on my own.
    Make sure when you're calling support that you tell them that you restored to factory default and before you send your computer in, back up your data. Also tell them that it's a new computer and you do not want to pay for shipping... They will most likely comp you shipping in both directions.

  • Time Capsule and USB Drive

    Hi,  I have a 2TB Time Capsule which is working fine with time machine.  Recently I added an USB drive to increase the storage, the USB Drive is connected and shows in airport utility, however time machine does not appaer to be using it.  Are there any addtioanal steps to complete to bring the USB drive into the backups ?

    Assuming that the USB drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)......
    Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) on your Mac
    Open Time Machine
    Insure that the USB drive is configured as a destination for Time Machine backups
    If it is not, click Add or Remove Disks
    Click the USB drive to highlight it
    Click Use Disk
    Time Machine will now backup to the USB disk, and alternate disks if you have other disks selected as Time Machine backup destinations.

  • Does anyone know if an Airport Extreme will support WevDav connections to a USB drive for iOS devices?

    With the possible demise of iDisk I was wondering if anyone knew if a USB drive hanging off of an Airport Express can be accessed via a WebDav connection? I know that iCloud will get better, but it does not feel like it meets my needs for a file store and I wanted to possibly replicate something like iDisk with the TB drive I have on my AEBS.I know one answer would be to get a Mac Mini and simply run Lion Server, but Iam looking for a way to host files that can be accessible (and automagically sync'd between my MBP and then accessible by my iOS devices. No, I don't want to use DropBox.or pay for Box.net.

    I was wondering if anyone knew if a USB drive hanging off of an Airport Express can be accessed via a WebDav connection?
    Sorry, but the AirPort Express will not support a USB drive, only a compatible USB printer.

  • IPod Nano, Windows, and USB driver quirkiness question

    Hey all,
    I recently helped someone who was suffering from two separate, show-stopping iPod/iTunes problems to get things into such a state that they could actually make use of both. Things seem to be working fine, though one of our solutions seems to me to be a bit less than optimal.
    For the sake of providing as much information as possible, the first problem (though likely unrelated) was the infamous vanishing iTunes installation. We solved this by using the ctrl-alt-delete trick on an iTunes 4.9 installation (that is, by ending all of the install processes when the installation-ending error message shows up.) Okay, that's not the best solution, but it seems to be all that we can do for now.
    The main concern, however, is with the iPod USB driver, and a problem that began with the formatting of the iPod. I can see that at least a few people have had this problem, but here it is for the sake of it:
    The iPod installation software would state that the iPod needed to be formated, and then proceed to sit for a very long time, "waiting for iPod," until it would eventually fail. We solved this using the second technique (uninstalling the iPod USB driver) outlined by Paul Green7 in this thread: William Brame, "Initial formatting of iPod Nano", 02:49pm Sep 22, 2005 CDT
    After doing this, we ran the iPod setup software again, and it told us that the iPod didn't need to be formatted. Obviously this was rather confusing, but upon loading up iTunes, it proved to be true. It appeared as an actual drive in My Computer, and it showed up properly as a 4gb iPod which songs could be copied to without a hitch.
    That is, until the computer was rebooted. After a reboot, the iPod would only be recognized once again as a "USB Mass Storage Device," would not appear in My Computer, and indeed iTunes failed to recognize it as anything other than a 360gb storage device of some unknown sort.
    So, what we found was that every time the computer was rebooted, the driver needed to be uninstalled again, and when Windows booted again the iPod would be properly recognized.
    Now, as I said, this leaves things in a working, if far less than ideal, state. Can anyone think of a more proper fix for this? It seems to me that we've only partially addressed the problem here, and I can't help but think that this may not be the best state to leave things in.
    Also, if nothing else, is there any possibility of ill effects resulting from our currently-employed solution? As far as I can tell, the worst thing about it is that it's merely bothersome, but then, I've had difficult understanding these problems in the first place.
    That said, if anyone can offer any advice, it would be greatly appreciated!

    The key to your problem is more than likely the 360GB storage device. This is a symptom of having either network drives or an external hard drive attached to your computer, and Windows confusing them with the iPod. The solution is to reassign the iPod's drive letter. See this:

  • Problem with creating Connection pool and JNDI, driver is not detected

    Hi,
    I have an issue with creating Connection Pool and JNDI.
    I'm using:
    - JDK 1.6
    - OS: Linux(ubuntu 8.10)
    - Netbeans IDE 6.5.1
    - Java EE 5.0
    - Apache Tomcat 6.0.18 Its lib directory contains all necessary jar files for Oracle database driver
    - Oracle 11g Enterprise
    My problem is that the Oracle database driver is not detected when I want to create a pool (it works pretty well and is detected without any problem when I create ordinary connection by DriverManager)

    Context context = (Context)ic.lookup("java:comp/env");
    DataSource dataSource = (DataSource)context.lookup("jdbc/oracle11g");

    Has anyone succeeded in creating a connection pool with JNDI by using Tomcat 6 or higher ? If yes, could kindly explain about the applied method.
    Regards,

    Hello again,
    Finally I managed to run my application also with Tomcat 6.0.18. There was only two lines that had to be modified
    in the context.xml file (the context of my application project and not server's)
    Instead of writing
    <Context antiJARLocking="true" path="/WebApplication2">
        type="javax.sql.DataSource"
        factory="org.apache.tomcat.dbcp.dbcp.BasicDataSourceFactory"
    </Context>we had to write:
    <Context antiJARLocking="true" path="/WebApplication2">
        type="oracle.jdbc.pool.OracleDataSource"
        factory="oracle.jdbc.pool.OracleDataSourceFactory"
    </Context>- No modification was needed to be done at server level (niether server.xml nor server context.xml)
    - I just added the ojdbc6.jar in $CATALINA_HOME/lib (I didn't even need to add it in WEB-INF/lib of my project)
    - The servlet used to do the test was the same that I presented in my precedent post.
    For those who have encountered my problem and are interested in the format of the web.xml and context.xml
    with Tomcat 6.0, you can find them below:
    Oracle server: Oracle 11g Enterprise
    Tomcat server version: 6.0.18
    Oracle driver: ojdbc.jar
    IDE: Netbeans 6.5.1
    The context.xml file of the web application

    The "DB Tools Close Connection VI" does not free all the memory used when "DB Tools Open Connection VI" connects to "MySQL ODBC Driver 3.51".
    I have made a small program that only opens and close the connection that I run continously and it's slowly eating all my memory. No error is given from any of the VI's. (I'm using the "Simple Error Handler VI" to check for errors.)

    Help please....

    The advise is that you install an appropriate USB driver for that projector in order for the projector to sense its signal.
    Have you checked with the manufacturer if that projector is compatible with your Mac Book Pro?
    Is it a newer Projector? All currently that I know connect via Thunderbolt.
