Connect ENet desktop to Airport iMac?

I've got a new Intel iMac connected to our 802.11g Linksys router, no ethernet cable in the office. I want to connect my ethernet-wired MacPro downstairs to the machine for file and printer sharing, both of which I've enabled on the iMac. However, the desktop machine (wire connection) does not see the computer on the network, nor via entering its AFP address. In 'Firewall' preferences (Security), I've enabled the option for 'necessary connections' (or whatever it's called), but on the iMac, System Profiler shows 'Block all incoming connections' under the 'Network:Firewall' section. This doesn't make sense to me, but not even sure if it's related.
How do I network these two computers? In general I've been able to network quite easily, but never tried to access a wireless-only computer via ethernet.
Thanks in advance, both of these computers are new, and trying to get things going...
Jeff

Never mind, I figured it out, and was the 'allow only essential connections' setting that did it...
You'd think if the computer were set up to allow file sharing, it would know that such a request was essential...

  • Connecting "older" pc and new iMac desktop via Airport extreme

Please bear with me...I am a Mac novice. My husband and I just purchased our first mac (iMac 20" desktop)and had it up and running in 2 minutes. We got internet access immediately through the bluetooth (whose signal it is remains a mystery). We purchased the airport extreme to access the internet via our Dell's 2 y/o cable modem (comcast Motorola Surfboard)before we realized we had a hotspot in our house. We also want to use the printer that is connected to our pc with our mac. I cannot get the airport configured at all...I keep getting error messages. The first one that appears says that my wireless interface is not enabled. I went to My Network Places and set up the wirless network using a USB flash drive. I connected it to the airport's USB connection, and then to my iMac. Neither one appeared in the list of devices detected when I reconnected the flashdrive to my pc. I've tried rebooting, disconnecting and then reconnecting both the modem and the aiport from the power supply. Should I reset the airport? Help!!

This is very likely to be a neighbour's wireless or Airport network (not Bluetooth).

Don't use the PC to configure the Airport Extreme Base Station, use the iMac, it will be easier.

You are probably trying to use the Airport Assistant, this will only work on a wireless computer, in order to configure an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) from a wired PC, you need to connect to the AEBS via the LAN port and then use the Airport Admin Utility.

However still configure the AEBS via the iMac.

That Microsoft wireless process only works with other Windows PCs, it won't work with a Mac or the AEBS.

Try using the Mac to configure the Airport network using the Assistant.
    Should I reset the airport?
You may need to, but sounds like you haven't managed to configure it, so it will still be in the default state.

Are you saying that Yos/10.10, as a volume located in a mounted external drive won't appear as an option in Snow Leopard's Startup Disc, in Sys Prefs? I've never heard this one before. AFAIK any mounted volume, regardless of OS, should appear there. I would think that, if it appears in the Boot Picker/Startup Manager it would also appear and could be booted to from Snow's Startup Disk. I can't test this myself, since I don't have Yos. Is what you are saying documented somewhere?

Close all Apps and see if Activity Monitor shows any processes runnung.
Not that I think this is the cure but have you tried these resets:
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.
    PRAM RESET
    Zap the PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • My PC can connect to the airport extreme but with encryption it cannot connect to the internet my iMac has no issues, any help.

My PC can connect to the new airport extreme I just purchased but with encryption it cannot connect to the internet my iMac has no issues.  If I open the airport exteme up and provide no security everything is fine which leads me to believe it is something with the encryption between the two devices.  Not sure what step I'm missing here this shouldn't be this difficult.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I am asking if the DNS IP addresses, not the IP addresses assigned by the DHCP service, are the same. DNS is like the Internet's version of the Yellow Pages. Your ISP typically will provide them to you or you can elect to use those provided by another source, like OpenDNS.
DNS is the service that translates a website's URL to its actual IP address so that you can access it. I am just trying to rule out that the PC is not configured properly with the correct DNS IP information.
The other thing to check is if the PC is configured to use a Proxy service. By default, it would not be.
Finally, what is the make & model of the PC. More importantly, if the PC is using either a PCI or USB wireless adapter, what is its make & model?

  • Connecting my Powerbook to my iMac for internet sharing via airport

Thanks in advance for any help.
I have given up trying to get an answer to my Airport problem and NTL Virgin.
I now have my iMac connected to web via ethernet all okay for a week now so it can't be my connection that was the problem.
I need to connect my PowerBook to the internet now at the same time. I would obviously like to do this using wireless technology. I was hoping to web share my iMacs connection via the airport cards on both macs but seem to be struggling.
I can set up a new network on the iMac and get the PowerBook to see it but it won't connect to the internet.
Any advice would be great thanks

  • IPad 2 connects to Wi-Fi on iMac, not to internet

I've had this problem off and on since I got the iPad. All of the discussions I can find about connecting the iPad to the Internet via a computer with an Ethernet connection mention doing things to the router. I do not have a router (that I know of). I am connecting my iPad to the Wi-Fi network that was created on my desktop computer (an iMac running Snow Leopard).
The Ethernet connection from the iMac to the Internet works fine (through a DSL modem).
The iPad is wirelessly connected to this Wi-Fi network.
The iPad _used to_ be able to connect to the Internet via the Wi-Fi network, but it can't now and hasn't been able to for a couple of months. This necessitates me spending money using its cellular data connection.
I have re-set, re-booted and all the other recommended things on the iPad.
For a while, the AirPort connection in Settings>Network on the iMac had a 169 dot something self-assigned IP address and could not connect to the Internet. I got smart and reconfigured it so it now has a manually entered IP address and it now says it's connected to the Internet.
But the iPad still won't connect to the Internet via the Wi-Fi network.
    So my questions are:
-- is there something I'm not getting here?
-- would upgrading the iMac to Lion help? I have to do that sometime soon anyway.
-- would having a Time Machine help? I've been backing up to a hard drive.

Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
Also try this - Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

  • Connection to Internet via Airport snow

Help. For years my airport iMac and MacBook pro worked in harmony but my network was open. When I started any computer including my MacBook pro I was able to join the network without a password. "Foolishly" I decided to add a password. I used the iMac to change the airport base station settings. It is so long since I set it up I didnt recall it asking for a password to make changes but it asked for one and I used my normal admin password. I changed the security settings and added a password.
I tried to join the network which my MacBook can see and it says there was an error trying to join as my macbook set to ask to join networks. I used the diagnostic route and typed in the password but it said I had used the wrong password, which I hadnt. I then went back to the iMac and removed the security password. But i am still unable to join and using the diagnostics it still asks for a password which now doesnt exist and when I start my MacBook it tells me my prefered networks are not available but did I wish to join the open network. I say yes and again get the error message "there was an error trying to join ....... network with options of ok or try again. Try again does nothing.
When I plug an ethernet cable into the airport base station I can connect to the internet but obviously not wirelessley. I know the card in the macBook is fine as I can connect to other wireless systems.
    Can anyone help
    Thanks

  • Connecting Remotely back to Home iMac

It turns out that I will be on the road for an extended period of time, and I was wondering if there is a way that I can connect back to my home iMac and see the desktop remotely? (i.e. Pull files and maybe run a program or 2)
On the road I am running a older iBook with 10.4.11, and at home I am running a G5 iMac with 10.4.?? connected via Airport.
Is there a way I can do this? Do I need something like 'Remote Desktop'?
    Thanks for any info

You're welcome. Good luck with that. Hopefully you both have iSights and your internet connection doesn't give you fits with iChat. Extended road trips can be a drag and the visual touch with the home front is at least some consolation. Speaking of internet connection, VNC can seem a little slow as it paints your iMac screen pixel by pixel on your iBook. If the images on your iMac's screen are not too "busy," you can speed things up on the VNC connection by adding a "-C" (Compression .... not "-c" which is something else) switch to your ssh command. So you could type ssh -Cl {imacUserName) -L 5480:127.0.0.1:548 -L 5901:127.0.0.1:5900 {imacIPaddress} (I mention this in the other posts, but highlight it once again, depending on your selected font in safari, that "l" in front of {imacusername} is a lower-case "ell" not an upper-case "eye").
Oh yeah, and the file sharing? You do the Finder>Go>Connect to Server stuff on your iBook, not inside the VNC display of your iMac (after reveiewing my previous post, I thought that it may have been possible to incorrectly interpret where you did the "connect to server" bit, so thought I ought to clarify that, too).
Lastly, if you already know this, I apologize for perhaps coming across sounding condescending, but when on the road, all previous references to the iMac's IP address is NOT the 192.168.x.x address of the iMac, but rather of the modem as viewed from your ISP's switch-- the "external" or "WAN" IP address. Your wife can determine this for you by launching safari and entering checkip.dyndns.com as the URL. Your vnc and afp connection should be great so long as your ISP doesn't roll your dynamic IP address on you while you are connected. Again, something like dyndns Updater installed on your iMac, in conjunction with a free domain name thru dyndns.com, is worth its weight in gold when you do remote access.
And now for my disclaimer for the Apple forum secret police: other outfits make products like dyndns updater for their similar free dynamic dns services. I have no pecuniary interest in dyndns (actually, I pay them for optional services not germane to this thread). But they are the only product/service with which I am familiar in this regard so that's why I cite them over and over in my examples.

  • Using external hard drive connected to desktop as time machine disk for laptop

I recently purchased an external hard drive for the purpose of backing up my laptop and desktop macs. Both are running Mountain Lion (10.7.5). The desktop is physically connected to both the hard drive and to my modem. I have enabled pretty much every sharing option on both the laptop and desktop. When my router crapped out I began just using the internet sharing capabiilty.
I have been able to chose the desktop as the disk for backing up my laptop, but I want to use the hard drive (connected to the desktop) as the disk. I cant figure out how to do this yet. I can easily access the hard drive by using either the "connect as user" option. I thought that perhaps I could broadcast the connection somehow as an airport connection, but I don't know how to, or if this is even possible.
The desktop is a mac mini, and the laptop is a macbook pro. Both were purchased in mid 2011.

  • Can't connect wireless device to airport extreme

I bought airport extreme router second hand and am connecting it to HP desktop windows 8.  All software is installed properly and router is connected.  I have a solid green light, and internet access on desktop, but cannot connect wireless devices to network (kindle, cell phone, etc.)  All wireless devices show excellent network signal strength, allow me to put the password in, but all show connected and have not internet access.

This appears to be a simple modem, so assuming that you reset the modem completely before you connected it to the AirPort Extreme, the next step would be to check to insure that the AirPort is in router mode and not bridge mode.
Open up AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Extreme, and then click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon at the top of the window
Click the Internet Connection tab just below that
Make sure that the setting for Connection Sharing is set to Share a public IP address
Click Update to save any changes, and give the AirPort a full minute to restart
Check the network again to see if devices can connect now.

  • Connecting Serial Garmin GPS to iMac Intel

I was wondering if anyone has connected a Serial port cable GPS from Garmin to an iMac Intel using a USB to RS232 converter cable. I have a GPSmap 76S from Garmin and have not been able to get Google Earth or LoadmyTrack programs recognize the GPS. I have created a serial port through Bluetooth and downloaded a program from Keyspan ¨Serial Assistant¨, the program recognized the cable adaptor but not the GPS on the device list. Would appreciate any feed back on the subject. I contacted Garmin and they said that they do not have any experience with Apple computer at the moment and the compatibility. I contacted the company who made LoadmyTrack and they said they have had success connecting the particular model GPS with Apple computers but did not specify if they were the intel duo core and have not heard from them again.

I have a Garmin 12XL (very old serial connected GPS) and use MacGPS Pro software (terrific software, terrific support from the author! - http://www.macgpspro.com/). When I moved from my beige G3 desktop to my iMac, I worried about this but their recommendation was painless. I bought the Keyspan USA-28X usb to serial adapter (This is a dual mini-din to usb adapter, which I chose because my existing cabling fit the min-din serial ports on my G3 - but Keyspan's USA-19HS is also available for PC type serial cables). Keyspan offers a Universal Binary driver to support this. (I am using the Keyspan Serial Assistant as you are.) The MacGPS Pro software is also Univeral Binary, and I have no trouble getting the GPS info into my machine this way. Haven't tried getting GPS info directly into Google Earth though... Something else to play with later, I guess - I see the MacGPS Pro software now supports interaction with Google Earth.
Just a quick revision here... I see the GPSMap 76CS uses a different connector than mine - not sure about your GPSMap 76S - but the proper Keyspan device MAY be the "Garmin 010-10141-00 with
Keyspan USA-19HS" suggested on the web site I noted above.

  • Wifi connection drops - must "restart" airport every 2 mins

Everything used to worke fine, I live near a free hotspot and the speed is correct. Now (since when, I can't know), it appears that the connection is correct for a few seconds/minutes, then drops. The solution I temporarily found is: deactivate airport, and activate it just after. At this moment, I have a full quality signal for a few seconds/minutes, and I have to repeat the operation.
I tried with my PowerBook: the signal is stable. I event tried to share the PowerBook wifi connection to the iMac via the firewire (cf. system pref/sharing), and then my iMac connection is stable!
I restarted on Vista, and it seems I have the same pb there also, so it's not a priori a MacOS issue.
It can't be a security issue since there is no security key on this network (WPA or WEP)
Does anyone know a program to test the hardware of the airport card? or a firmware upgrade?
    Thanks
(I asked this question on another post, but there was a "question answered" symbol, that's why I'm asking it again on a new post)

My imac 24" Tiger was working beautifully connecting via airport to Linksys DSL router until i applied Airport Express Update 2008-002. It kept dropping the connection even thought the airport wireless icon shows full signal strength.
I scoured the net and for over 2 weeks applied every possible solution from deleting widgets to changing router channels and even removing all items surrounding the DSL router like cordless phone and digital clock... nothing worked. I even dug up the 2008-001 airport update and reapplied that but no good
I finally got so fed up that i re-installed the OS 10.4.7 with the "archive previous system option" and everything worked great. I then updated the OS to 10.4.11 and still everything worked consistently. I applied Airport Express Update 2008-001 and things went south.
I reapplied the 10.4.11 update again and things are back to working consistently.
Reinstalling the OS took a couple of hours but it really is a lot less painful than having an unreliable connection and the stress of feeling helpless, especially while the Windows machines had no connectivity issues. Hope this helps.
