Is it possible that iMac corrupts connected external hdd-s drive via USB? (two wd cav. green 2tb from different purchase went down in one day, both from the backside usb ports)
First one of my video storage hdd, full of files suddenly got extremely slow, and a few minutes later, it unmounted itself, but with the unmount error, but nobody even touched the cables, electricity etc. When I tried to mount it again, it did not respond, just give a periodical load light and ticking. First I thought it must be hardware failure, but since I bought a brand new drive today and it made the same problem as soon as I tried to format it. I got suspicious. The consol, said about these - i googled all but now solution so far. (WesternFresh is my drive)

and there was an I/O faliure not but it was on another mac - where i hoped itt will come back to live.
I think - if it is possible - that the OS maybe misunderstand something about these drives, and try to change - maybe permissions - all the time if a usb external connects...? (I am not really into it as you see )
Also about Disk Utility - it does not see any partition on the old hdd, but i shows the name of the product. If I connect the new hdd via the keyboard usb, the disk utility is able to see and format it, but the hdd will be still slow and tikking after it.
Also I tried Disk Warrior (freezd out) and Techtool Pro 6 thanks to some ol'frineds - which also not saw the old hdd, but did nothing useful with the new one.
About cav green: I have 3 of them and no error so far, and got 4 1tb cav green in 2 mybook studio II also without any problem.
Iam a bit scared, and try not to plug in any usb hdd-s now, but I have to continue work, so I need solutions.
I hope if it is not hardware failure, maybe some tricky terminal code will bring back the viability of my old hdd - and I won't have to spend a lot of money to recover data.
    strange.
    if anybody has a clue?
    update 1:
    i found this post also:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15905481#15905481
I also made the mentioned steps - but it is a bit different sice it reproduce itself and I cant use DU.

It turned out that WD is the big bad guy in this game.
According the data rescue company where I asked for an inspection, both of the drives had their reader head loose. And in the one, which was my already-in-use disk its even damaged the platters... xxxxx
So its time to pay bunch of money to recover, and take a walk to wd service to bang on the desk.
Also note - it may be somehow related to intellispeed technology - since macs not really friendly with wd-s built-in solutions.
On the other hand, with WD GP 1Tb there is no problems at all for ages.

  • Twin unpowered USB hub for connecting external HDD and iphone

I have a MBA and a powered Kensington 7 port USB hub which works great when I am either at home/in the office.
Is there an unpowered twin port USB hub that would allow me to connect both my WD myv passport 320gb external HDD and 3g iphone to my MBA when i am truly on the move?
    thanks in advance
    Message was edited by: NRG1970

Because those are both drawing power from the macbook air, it might be questionable, but any should do, but I haven't seen any 2 port hubs, only four port ones, and I tend to like Logiix, as their support is good and their products are good also, and they are fairly low profile.

  • Help connecting external HDD to AT300 tablet.

I want to know if and how it would be possible to connect an external HDD to a AT300 tablet.  Both the tablet and the HDD have micro usb ports, but I can not locate a micro to micro cable online.  Am I completly wrong about this even being possible?  Any help would be great.
    Thanks in advance.

For a flash drive, you use a thing callled a USB "OTG" ("On-the-Go" or "host mode") cable. If you search the forum you can find a previous post with some good hints how to find one of these.
Cannot say I've ever tried my AT305 with a hard disk--as opposed to a flash drive. I'd be concerned about current supply capability for some of the larger capsacity ones (many of which draw more than the USB is specified to provide and some hosts have more headroom above the spec than others). I'd also be concerned that some disk formats might not work with Android. I'm sure it's documented somewhere which ones do and which ones don't. But some research would be in order before betting this will work painlessly first time.

  • TG797n v3 dropping connection after connecting External HDD

Hi All, I have a Seagate SRD00F2 external HDD that I'd like to network on the TG797n v3. Problem is, as soon as I connect it the whole modem starts to drop out and reboot itself. The HDD has an external power supply, but not a switch to power it up. After reading some other posts I'm concerned that this hard drive still needs USB power as well which is causing the modem to crash/reboot. Would a powered USB hub be sufficient to connect the two devices, or do I need to change my external hard drive? Product suggestions would be appreciated.

hey , Thats' a 2 TB harddrive, right? Which of the ports on the TG797 do you have it connected to - the back, or the side? I'm a tad confused, because the Seagate has it's own power supply, and you should not need a powered hub as well. I know some people have had issues, because IIRC, this is a USB3 drive. So some steps I suggest - run a test on the Seagate drive by connecting it to a PC and run the Seagate diagnostics (download them from Seagate), just to eliminate the drive as havig an issueTry a different port on the ModemTry a different USB drive as well, as I doubt the modem will like the separate hub, for instance As an aside,  after the modem reboots, does it "see" the Seagate drive, or does the TGN797 continue to misbehave?

  • HT4106 Will this thing support if I connect external HDD's or Flash drives to watch movies or transfer photos?

I'm very interested in purchasing this accesory for my camera but I would like to maximize it's usage. I wanna know if the camera connector (via the usb port) will support if I connect, say, flash drive or external hdd. I want to know if I can watch movies directly from the hdd/flash drive instead of buying an app to stream

Theoretically you can put movies and videos onto an SD card, satisfy the naming requirements - all files in a DCIM folder and with a name of exactly 8 characters. Then you can use the photo app to import that video file onto your iPad, watch it and delete it.
Does require that you have the room to import....so it's not perfect but it does work.
but if you want to watch a lot of movies and video files, the seagate is probably the best way to go since you can keep tons more than what fits on a 4-32 gig card (which start to get pricey after a bit)

  • Leopard crashes when connecting external HDD

    Hi all,
I bought my MacBook Pro 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo about 3 months ago and about a month ago I also bought as external 2.5 Freecom toughdrive 250GB HDD. I used this for the Time Machine and for about a month everything was working perfectly. However about 10 days ago while working the system crashed, I got the usual Gray box with 'You need to restart you computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button'
After several attempts I came to the conclusion that the system crashes when the external HDD is mounted. So, I though it was the time machine that was causing this crash and I erased the external HDD and switched off the Time machine, but unfortunatly that did not help either, still even tough the external HDD is erased and clean, every time I mount it, after about 5 minutes the system crashes and I have to restart it by holding down the power button.
Has anyone had this problem? can someone help?
    Thanks in advance
    Alex

    Hi Jeff,
Tried that but to no luck, it still crashed after about 5 minutes!

  • My macbook freezes whenever I connect external HDD or USB pen.

My macbook freezes everytime I plug my USB pen or my external HDD, however if I reboot it and keep the USB pen/ext HD plugged it will work just fine.
Can you guys help me because it's really frustrating having to turn the computer off everytime I need to copy sth to my USB pen/Ext HDD.
    Many thanks.

    Hi fol10,
If you are having unusual USB behavior, you may want to start by resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) and PRAM, as outlined in the following articles
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple-support
OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM
You may also want to see if this behavior happens with every USB port on the Mac, or just a specific one.

  • Internet speed in Snow Leopard slows down because of connected External HDD

I have two external Iomega harddrives that I connect through FireWire 800 to my MacBook Pro 17".
I noticed, when the harddrives are plugged in, safari lags and slows down tremendously. As I eject my harddrives from my MacBook Pro, the internet miraculously comes back at normal speed. The harddrives are just mounted, no data is being transferred.
I am not sure why this is, or why external harddrives would bother my internet connection. I am connected through my Airport wirelessly to my home router. Other computers get wireless internet fine as I notice this problem with my MacBook Pro.
Anyone know why this is happening and how to stop it? I notice restarting sometimes helps, but this problem comes back after awhile.
Also while I am mentioning this, I also notice the internet slow down when the MacBook Pro runs on battery. Anyone know why this is, and how to fix it as well?
Thank you, and Happy Holidays to all!

I do not notice any connection between my external harddrives being connected and internet connection no more. So that is good.
What I have been noticing though, is my MacBook Pro at some points loosing connection to the internet. The Airport icon in the menu bar says it is connected to my wireless internet at full reception. But at times Safari and Firefox are just not working. I try reseting my internet routers and the problem still exists. It comes down to me having to restart my MacBook Pro, which seems to fix the issue.
I have a iBook G3 with Tiger, and a Dell laptop with XP, and they both receive wireless internet fine when in use. And this is while my MacBook Pro is not.
I am not sure what the issue is now. Right now I'm not sure if there is anything I can do to fix this besides contacting apple and using my applecare.
Is there any internet connection problems similar to what I just described I should be aware of? Thanks in advance!

Regarding uninstalling, this is from the FAQ on the MacFuse site (http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/wiki/FAQ):
    Q 2.3. How can I uninstall MacFUSE?
A: Launch the Mac OS X System Preferences application and go to the MacFUSE preference pane. Click on the "Remove MacFUSE" button. This will uninstall all MacFUSE components except the preference pane itself.
You can keep the MacFUSE preference pane around should you decide to install MacFUSE again in the future. If you do wish to remove it, you do it just like how you would remove any other non-Apple preference pane: In System Preferences, control-click (right-click) on the MacFUSE icon and you will see "Remove ..." as an action.
Only if you had the "Show Beta Versions" button checked in the MacFUSE prefpane, you'll have a property list (plist) file remaining at this point:/Library/Preferences/com.google.macfuse.plist. To remove it, you should uncheck the button before you remove the prefpane as described above.
Note that an official (correct) MacFUSE installation will have a preference pane if you have MacFUSE 2.0 or later installed. If you have an older version of MacFUSE, you can uninstall as follows.
The other thing you can do if you're having problems is go into System Preferences and there should be an icon for MacFuse.  By going into that there may be an option to disable it.  If so, do that first before attempting to uninstall and try mounting your drives again.

  • Connecting external hdd drive requires reactivation

I have been having an issue with CS2 for some time now.  Every time I connect an e-SATA external hard drive, the message pops up saying "the licence configuration data is no longer usable.  Click OK to continue".   A new popup window appears, with the message:  "Your 30 day period to use Photoshop without activation is over.  To continue using this product you must activate with with a serial number".  I have a legitimate copy which I have had for several years, so what is this reference to a 30 day trial period?
When I try to activate on line, I am then told I have had too many activations, so cannot proceed.  This presumably is because I have been forced to reactivate each time I connect, and each time I disconnect the external hard drive.  I do not have Photoshop installed on any other computers.
I then try phone activation, and of course this fails, so I am put into a queue waiting an interminable time (over one hour) to talk to somebody, to activate, often ending with a dropped line and having to start again.  This is very frustrating indeed.
There surely is a way around this problem  I am not the only user of Photoshop to use an external e-SATA drive for storage.  Can anybody offer any advice?

Thanks for your input.  I have checked my drive numbering when the external drive is attached, and it comes at the end after my main drives.  I have a boot drive with Windows XP2 SP2, and all my applications, and three drives for data files, in RAID 5.0 configuration.  The external drive comes after these.  In the past I found that once I re-activated with the drive disconnected, then I could open Photoshop without further problems, until I once again reconnected the external drive via e-SATA, when I was asked to re-activate.  This only happens with e-SATA, and not with USB 2.0.  I feel like abandoning e-SATA, but that is admitting defeat.  There must be an answer.
Incidentally, i would like Adobe people to try using the telephone activation line, and experience the extreme frustration that I have experienced.  I have to use this each time, because on-line activation fails due to having exceeded the maximum number of activations.  I have had an extremely frustrating time over the last two days.  I have used two lines simultaneously to speed things up, one free, and one toll. On each of three occasion I have been held listening to music for over an hour on each line, and then the line disconnecting. Eventually, I got through to someone in the Philipines (yes its true) who gave me an authorisation code.  I was back in business for a short while, but then back to square one when I connected my external e-SATA drive, and had to re-activate once again by telephone.  In the past, disconnecting the drive enabled me to get back to work, but this time re-activation was required whether the drive was connected or not.  This is all totally unacceptable.  It seems to me that Adobe has little regard for its customers, and it has made this activation business an absolute nightmare.  At the very least, can Adobe not provide sufficient resources to speedily deal with telephone activation?

  • Sharing connected external hdd from imac to macbook?

    problem explained here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1749755&tstart=0
    thanks

First make sure that both computers have the 'file sharing' box checked in the system preferences>sharing panel. Assuming you are running Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5), open Finder and the computer should show in the sidebar under sharing. Select that computer and in the top right of the window choose 'connect as' and it will ask for a user name and password (for the other computer - not the one you are using). If you've already done these steps before, you may need to select disconnect first so you can log in again. To gain access to all the volumes mounted on that computer (internal or external) enter an admin user name and password. If unsure who admin users are, check the other computers system preferences>accounts panel.
NOTE: Both computers also need to be connected to the same network for this method (whether wired or wireless).

  • Seeing PC connected external HDD on a MacBook

    Hi
I am about to buy a MacBook and I currently use a Dell PC. All of my music and movies are stored on a couple of external drives (1 Maxstor 320GB and 1 Lacie 500GB).
If I connect the PC and MacBook together via ethernet and share the drives on the PC - too which they are primarily connected will I be able to see their content on the MacBook.
Basically, how do access PC drives from my MacBook?
    Thanks

With Leopard or Tiger it's easy to do. If your getting the latest MacBook it will come with Leopard. Check below for some tips on doing this.

  • IMac with external HDD backup to Time Machine

I have an iMac with a 1TB internal HDD and have run out of space due to the number of photos in my library.  I want to move the photos to a 1TB external HDD, then add a new 2TB external HDD to serve as the new Time Machine backup drive.  So my setup will include the iMac and two connected external HDDs.  What is the best way to set this up so the new Time Machine backup drive captures both the internal iMac HDD and the external photos HDD?  Any tips or tricks would be appreciated.  Thanks!

First of all, note that Time Machine can only make backups of drives formatted in HFS+ (known as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"), so your 1 TB external drive has to use that format before moving your photos to it. As you are using it to make Time Machine backups, it is already using that format.
There are two possibilities in order to start using a different external drive for Time Machine:
Move your old Time Machine backups made in your 1 TB external drive to your 2 TB external drive.
Start a completely new backup, deleting the old ones.
In the first possibility, you only have to follow these steps -> Time Machine: How to transfer backups from a current backup drive to a new backup drive - Soporte técnico de Apple After moving your Time Machine backups to the 2 TB external drive, remember to format the 1 TB drive with Disk Utility in order to store your photos there.
In the second possibility, just go to System Preferences -> Time Machine, and choose your 2 TB external drive as your Time Machine drive. Then, format the 1 TB external drive.
In both cases, Time Machine does not make backups of external drives by default, so after moving your photos to the 1 TB external drive, you have to go to System Preferences -> Time Machine -> Options, and remove the 1 TB external drive from the excluded items list. By doing that, the next backup will also include your 1 TB drive.

  • USB port gone after ejecting external HDD

    All software uptodate.
I have strange issue with USB ports. After ejecting USB drive (external HDD, powered by USB bus), which worked perfectly, USB port does not recognize anything, nor providing power. Turning MBP off and then booting back solves this issue.
    Any ideas?

After some time I connected external HDD to "dead" port again. And got power. But still no devices recognized on this port. For example: iPad does not charge, not recognized.
