Connect file history windows 10

I installed build 9841. I previously had 8.1. The file history recovery is saying that it is 0% restored and currently suspended. It says the drive (volume e) is disconnected. I can access the drive from explorer. Any suggestions?

Try disconnect your media and restart your PC and reconnect it and try again.
Run Windows Update and install all updates.

  • File history stopped working after a warning message in the event log

I have encountered this twice that File history stopped working, the event log says:
Unusual condition was encountered during finalization of a backup cycle for configuration C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration\Config
If I re-run it, it consumes the backup disk space but still failed to backup.
I have to manually delete all backup, turn off File History and re-configure it again to make it work.
This happened twice already, so all my file history lost after re-config.
    Anyone encounter the same situation?

    MICROSOFT is plagued by idiots!!!!
    - Just turn it off
    - then click  "select drive"
    - and when it asks you the retarded question... just click >>>>>"NO"<<<<<<<    -_-
Seriously... this is the answer.... frigging retards at microsoft... to think it takes an army of programmers and billions of dollars to create such idiocy!

I cant believe these morons put everyone through such hell and then don't even bother to follow up with the correct solution.
To top it of the moron moderator marks this as an answer??!!!
What a pathetic joke - I hope everyone reads this message before being punished by the miles of bullcrap in this thread -_-
    Microsoft = ridiculous
Thanks! I guess the TL;DR version is "to change your file history drive you need to discard the current temp files."
    Exactly :)
It's the bad wording in the messages.
the first message (which I can only vaguely remember so can't quote exactly) that gives you the impression you can continue
something but doesn't make clear that to so will need the "old drive" configured the way the "old drive" was.
Then the next message is just confusing:
“we can't copy files to this location.  Your current File History drive is disconnected.  Reconnect the drive and try again”
    sounds like
“we can't copy files to this location. [because there's a problem with the new location]
Your current File History drive is disconnected. [the new location is disconnected]
Reconnect the drive and try again [reconnect your new location and try again]”
When it should be reworded to say something along the lines of (in more formal language):
"You asked us to continue...give us the drive you were previously using...or if it's no longer available, click here to start from scratch"
(I know that's all the opposite of tldr but I'm trying again to put into words what I think was happening).

  • Windows 8.1 File History is completely unreliable and not fit for purpose!

I bought a new computer last week with Windows 8.1 installed and turned on File History.  I've been pulling my hair out ever since trying to get it to work properly to no avail.
There are two inherent problems in File Checker which seem to have went unresolved for over two years now according to numerous posts all over the internet.  Some files are not being backed up at all, and some files which have not been changed are being
duplicated.  From searching the internet, it seems this has been an ongoing issue since Windows 8 was rolled out and it has still not been resolved by Microsoft.
I've tried all of the suggestions I've found such as running system file checker, deleting the File History folder and corresponding configuration files and running File History again from scratch, turning off Homegroups, but it makes no difference whatsoever.
Still I'm finding media, pdf  and word files that are either being omitted or duplicated unnecessarily during backup and it appears to be completely random.
Until Microsoft resolve this major and widespread issue, File History cannot be relied upon to back up user files.  Users need to know that when disaster strikes and they go looking for a file in File History that it's going to be there.  Since
Windows 8 was rolled out, this appears not to be the case.
Microsoft, will you please fix this because the idea behind File History is excellent - if only it would work properly!!

    Hi Htimsc,
I can understand that you feel upset since this feature doesn't work fine on your computer. I have used this feature for a while to backup my files, and haven't encounter such issue. My OS is Windows 8.1 enterprise.
As I known, the issue on this feature can be caused by following factors:
    Not scheduled properly.
Clear up the history so frequently or the free spaces leaves before deleting files isn't set properly.
Disk error you backup files on
If you got network drive used to backup file history, the unstable network connection can be the caused.
    corrupted system files
So we have to determine the root cause of your issue and feedback.
First, File History only protects user libraries, desktop, favorites and contacts. Other files, such as operating system files, applications, and settings, are not backed up. Make sure that the non-backup files are not in this scope.
Another thing is that File History only protects file stored on a local drive.
•If you use offline folders and folder redirection, your folders (like My Documents or My Pictures) are redirected to a network share and will not be protected.
•If you add a network location to any of your libraries, this location will not be protected.
Make sure that all settings a properly and the files were not excluded during set up.
Since the released updates every month will fix some known issue from feedbacks, please make sure that your computer is up to date.

  • Windows 8: how does file history work?

I have a LAN and this LAN I have a server (a common PC) with a folder that is shared to all the users of the LAN can save files in this folder. I would like to do a backup of this folder.
But I don't know how it works the file history. The backup is made only when the user has logged in his account? what happends if someone that don't have activate the file history save files in this folder? I want that the server detect the changes and does
the work, but I don't want that the server has always a user logged in to do the backup.
Also I now that if I want to backup a folder that is not standard, I have to add the folder to the library, and the library is of one user, so this makes me think that it's needed to be logged in the server to do the backup.
So my question is if with file history do this:
In the server, to have a shared folder in which all the users can save files.
The users add and delete files from this folders.
Every hour, the server has to do a new backup.
But I don't wan't thata user in the server has to be logged to do the bakup, because the server is an intermediate computer that normally does not be used by anyone. Only will be connected to allow access to the shared folder.
I can do that with file history? How?
    Thanks.

For Windows 8 file system I'd ask them over here.

while updating the older version iTunes to latest one it shows "a network error occurred while attempting to read from the file: C:\windows\installer\iTunes64.msi. pls help on this matter to connect my i5 to PC. Thanks in advance

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

I use the FTP on the Go Pro app to do just this. I don't know what kind of servers I connect to though but I've not had any problems connecting.
I connect and select a file. I update the file, then tap save. The file is uploaded back to the server and the original version is ved just in case I might need it.

  • Monitoring File History / backups in Windows 8.1

    Hi,
By tracking some events I was able to monitor Windows 7 Backups. By means of of schedule task triggered by the events belows.
Image Backup successful : Event log : Microsoft/Windows/Backup/Operational. Source : Backup. Event ID : 14.
Profile Backup successful : Event Log : Application. Source : Windows Backup. Event ID 4098
(BTW, the Microsoft/Windows/Backup/Operational log not holding all backup logging is a bit disappointing, to say the least.)
How can I monitor Windows 8 "File history" ?
I we keep the default "every hour" File History, the best approach is perhaps to track failures instead of success. Also because I haven't seen any event logged for a successful backup into the log : Microsoft/Windows/FileHistory-Engine/File history
    backup log/Operational.
When I disconnect the backup device I get and Event ID 203 in there, though.
What are other event IDs related to a backup failure ?
Is there a configurable Action Center notification on backup failure ?

    Hi,
Log files related to File History can be found in Applications and Service Logs -> Microsoft -> Windows. We found following two interesting event files:
    WHC under FileHistory-Core
File History Backup Log under FileHistory-Engine
The entries of Information level in WHC appears whenever File History runs, stops, turns off or on. On the other hand, File History Backup Log records warnings or error messages, for instance, file was not backed up due to xyz error, unusual
condition was encountered during finalization of a backup cycle for configuration, unable to scan user libraries for changes and perform backup of modified files for configuration.

  • File History not Working in Windows 8.1

Ever since I upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1, File History has not worked. I've progressed from Event 202 to Event 204, but no resolution. Using an external Seagate backup drive - have scanned and reformatted that drive. Still no back ups. Seems File History
thinks my drive is disconnected - but it isn't. Can manually back up individual programs (Quicken) or files, but File History still thinks is disconnected. Even tried backing up to a MS PMD, but it thinks it isn't connected. Funny though - when I click on
"?Find another drive" - it sees both of those drives. Awesome!

    Hi aquaman5,
Did the issue occur only with the external media ?Have you tried to back up it to the local drive?
To configure the file history to back up to another drive,we usually do it from here:
Is the external drive been detected here ?
"Funny though - when I click on "?" Find another drive" - it sees both of those drives"
Where did you get this item "?".If it is possible ,would you please share the screenshot of this symptom with us ?
"Ever since I upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1, File History has not worked"
Considering this issue occurred after the upgrading ,I recommend you to run this command to check the health of the system .
    “dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth”
“I've progressed from Event 202 to Event 204, but no resolution” Would you please share the logs you have got with us ? It will be useful to troubleshoot this issue.

  • Windows 8.1 file history - Restore to fresh install

    Hi Everyone
I'm trying to understand the benefits of file history. As Windows 8.1 doesn't allow me to create a system image on a schedule anymore, I now have to resort to file history.
Hypothetical Scenario: OS hard disk catches fire, melts down and is not repairable. The good news! I enabled file history of everything I wanted to "save".
How does one import that "history" back into a fresh install on a new disk? Normally on windows 7, an image could just be written back and presto! the job is done
    Does that make sense?
Any help would be appreciated. If this isn't entirely possible, I'll end up tossing my OS disk(SSD into a raid 1)

    Hi,
Since Windows 8.1 took away the scheduling feature in System image backup, so as Henrik_Dahl mentioned in the previous reply, we can manually create a scheduled task.

I think either the file history is restored to a previous state or some parts of the file history is useless.

  • Activate File History in windows 8.1 with Powershell

    Hey :)
I just wondered if there is any way to activate File History in Windows 8.1 with Powershell?
I want to make a script where File History get activated automaticly, and since I want to do this on a lot of computers I want to use powershell.

    Hi,
Looks like you can just adjust a registry value to enable/disable this feature:
    http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/7706-file-history-enable-disable-windows-8-a.html
EDIT: Since you want to do this on multiple machines, I'd suggest using GP to set this value.

  • How to backup only users' relevant files from File History on Windows 8.1?

    Hi,
I would like to find out how to backup certain user's files from File History on Windows 8.1?
I'm planning to store the backup files on our server, over a shared network, so that client can retrieve them whenever they need.
I manage to do one by excluding all the folders from c:\, but it occurs quite silly to me to go select one by one files to exclude them.
Please advise if there is a better way?

  • Transfering files from Windows machine freezes my wi-fi connection

Guys, this is very weird, and it started to happen a week ago.
I use finder to connect to my windows machine on my home network, and after typing my password, I get access to the folder in the windows machine that I want.
The problem is: any file I try to transfer FROM or TO the windows PC freezes up mac os X after some seconds of transfer ... like a 60 mb file, it freezes after 20mb have been transfered ... and that's not only it ...
It freezes mac os x until I get the message "Connection to server LOST", and I only can get back on the network if I literally shut down my wi-fi router, because my macbook simply can't get DNS ip assigned again, it always auto-assign some weird ip and doesn't come back to the network till I restart my wi-fi router.
What in the **** may be going on ? Remember, it started to happen lately, it was not like this before !

  • Issue with G4 connecting to a Windows File Share

We have a single MAC G4 that our marketing department uses for graphic development. when we first setup the PC we were able to connect to our Windows shares on the network. For better than a year now we have had intermittent problems with connecting to our Windows file share. It would drop the TCP connection to the file share, you would need to go back a re-authenicate to the share. Two weeks ago the problem worsened, we can't connect the to Windows files share at all now. I have tried different users accounts including my own which has domain admin authority. However I have a samba file share and a snap server running on the network and I am able to connect to these machines with no issues. I suspect a configuration problem, but not sure where to look next.
The MAC is running the following OS version and Kernel
    OS 10.3.9 (7W98)
    Kernel Darwin 7.9.0
    Any guidance would be appreciated

I just figured it out myself.

  • How do I connect to a Windows 7 File System from Mountain Lion

I am wondering how to connect via Finder to Windows 7 hard drives.

I have Mountain Lion and I have been able to connect to a Windows laptop on my home network.
Go to 'Go' in Finder and select 'Connect to Server'. Put in the server address as smb://[ip address] / [server machine name]
You will find the ip address by running 'ipconfig' in the CMD application on your Windows 7 machine. You will find the server name also in Windows under System in Control Panel. Good luck - it works but it is temperamental sometimes I have found and reboots on either machine often help !!!!
