Connect iBook to LCD TV?

Hi,
Wonder if anyone can help...I am trying to connect my iBook G3 to my Phillips LCD TV. My problem is the cable. I am using the supplied DVI to VGA connector, however my TV has the same VGA connection on it. In other words two females and it therefore will not connect together.
I understand another option is to use the Apple S-Video + headphone jack for sound. Is this the only option or is one able to get hold of a DVI to "male" VGA connector.
Thanks
Philip

Reading Douglas McLaughlin's User Tip:
Because the Apple Video Adapter is video only, you will also need to buy an audio "Y" cable to get the audio out of your headphone port and into your TV. If you have already purchased an Apple A/V Cable and your computer requires the Apple Video Adapter for the video, you can still use the A/V Cable for the audio out of your iBook.
So, yes, it's normal not to get audio with just the video cable.
Apple Discussions underwent renovations the weekend of November 13. Things are still "under construction."

  • Ibook and lcd tv

Hi, I just got a new lcd tv and was hoping there will be a way to hook my ibook up to it, and use that as a monitor.

    Hi Jenny,
The link Ronda posted was actually only about connecting iBooks to standard definition TVs, not High Definition, but the information in there about sound is good too. You could hook it up by standard definition, but the price of the Apple iBook to Svideo adaptor is probably more than the VGA to DVI cable.
I suggest buying a VGA to DVI cable, from somewhere with a good return policy, just in case. The VGA end needs to have pins in it, and the DVI end does too. Plug it in appropriately, then go to the Displays preference panel and detect displays.
You will only be able to mirror the iBook's internal display and run it at 1024x768, 800x600 or 640x480, but those will be much better quality than standard definition video. Depending on your iBook, there are hacks ("Screen Spanning Doctor") which may let you run it independently at different resolutions, but they may decrease the life of your iBook.

  • I was told of an application that will allow the use of a second screen to view my data and files, but I forgot its name. I'd like to make the connection because my LCD is broken.

You don't need an application, just plug a compaitble monitor into the display port of your MacBook Pro, set the screen up in System Preferences>Displays

  • Can't connect MBP to LCD projector using DVI-TO-VGA adapter

I am trying to connect my MacBookPro to a Hitachi CP-X885 projector, which I normally connect an IBM Thinkpad to at 800x600 or 1024x768. I also use my MBP and the VGA adapter to connect to other LCD projectors and monitors (so my adapter works, as well as both systems, projector, cables, etc.). Problem is, that when I connect my MBP to the projector (I have to connect it via VGA as there is a 250 foot cable that goes to the front where the rear-projection takes place). When I do the "detect displays" nothing is detected. I also connected directly to the projector using a shorter cable, same thing (doesn't detect it). So, is the projector not supplying some type of signal to the output, that the MBP wants to see?)... is there a way to FORCE the MPB to have output? I know that if there is signal, it will display (we have LOTS of notebooks that display to the projector just fine, BUT have SEVERAL MBP's, and NONE of them will detect, and we've tried several adapters (just to be sure)... HELP!... is there some way to FORCE output from the MBP instead of it having to DETECT IT???
    Thanks!

Sorry Walter, but according to the Terms of Use (which you agreed to the first time you logged in to the Discussions and can be found if you click on the "Help" link to the right):
Do not post a URL unless it directly answers a user's question.
The URL you post does not answer David's original question. Also, it could potentially void his warranty because a firmware hack (and this is indeed a link to a "hack") is an unauthorized alteration to the hardware of his computer. ("Software" can only be installed on the hard drive and that hack is not installed on the hard drive, it's installed on the firmware on a chip inside the logic board.)
I don't want to take this thread off-topic, but your reply does NOT help David's situation. I would, however, value your input and anyone else's to this and any other topic in the Discussions as long as it is pertinent to the original subject.

  • Connect to 32" LCD TV from Lenovo T61 with a VGA connector

    Hi,
I am trying to connect to 32" LCD TV 1080P from T61 with a VGA connector. When I do (Fn+Ctrl+F7) I can see the T61's output on my TV if I set T61's display setting as 1280x768. Then If I increase the resolution on the TV the screen becomes black. I want to change the display setting to 1920x1080 so that I can see output as full screen on my TV.
    Notebook setting as follows
    Color Quality - 32 bit
    Refresh Rate - 60 Hertz
How can I change the screen resolution?

Most likely the TV won't support higher resolutions via the VGA connector. But there is a workaround.
After spending several hours at a TV store last October, we found an obscure reference in the TV's manual stating this limitation. We also discovered that HDMI will support the max resolution. The T61p docking station has a DVI port that outputs a signal that can be converted to HDMI. We bought a DVI-to-HDMI conversion plug ($75) and took the docking station, conversion plug and an HDMI cable back to the store. Worked great so we bought the 65" LCD for trade shows. There are some settings to play with on both the T61p and the TV that will increase the image clarity significantly. The image is stunning at full res.

  • MBP connected to Sony LCD 46X350A - No Signal Detected

    Need help.
I've tried connecting my MBP to my Sony LCD via the VGA output (I believe that's what it is), via the cable supplied when I bought my notebook, but the message on the LCD says no signal detected.
I've went into the System Preferences, Displays and the MBP definitely recognizes that it is connected to the LCD, but I cannot get any picture (No Signal Detected Message on LCD) either by mirroring or using the LCD as an external monitor.
Any thoughts or suggestions from anyone?
    Many thanks in advance.

Im having a very similar issue. I was happily using my MBP with an external Acer Display connected, until that display simply stopped working. It now only says 'No Signal' before shutting off. Zapping the PRAM and the SMC didn't get me anywhere, so I'll be taking it to the Mac Store tonight. I'll post what they'll tell me!

How i connect iBooks with itunes on my nas?

I have been suckered by this problem too. I had all my e-books, mostly PDFs, saved on my NAS and available in iTunes. I wanted to access them from my old iMac with OS X 10.6.8 and my new iMac with OS X 10.9. But when the files were moved to iBooks, they disappeared from the NAS and now I'm in a mess. Thanks, Apple :-(

  • Connecting iBook to Apple LCD.

    Hi,
My 2 year old cracked my screen on my iBook several months ago Today, he cracked another section. I can still see 4/5 of the screen, but I do photo editing and I just can't keep doing it like this. I absolutely cannot afford to replace the screen right now.
I have an Apple LCD that came with my G4 Desktop that no longer works for who knows what reason (can't diagnose it myself). What type of connector would I need to convert the wire coming from the desktop monitor to hook it up to my laptop?
    I'm desperate, please help!!
    Thanks
    Candice

    That is not correct.
The iBook has a min-VGA output.
Apple sells the Apple VGA Display Adapter (M8639G/A) which provides a VGA output.
Apple also sells the Apple Video Adapter (M9109G/A) which provides an S-video and composite video output.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Check out Douglas McLaughlin's User Tip Which Video Adapter do I need?
It offers links to appropriate adapters.
The video adapter is pictured here:

I note that the link in Doug's User Tip leads to a "Not found" page.
This looks to be the one:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/254623-REG/Apple_M9109G_A_Video_Adapter_fo r_Specific.html
Note that you will also need audio cables to get audio.

  • Connecting iBook G4 to projector

I want to connect an iBook G4 to an Epson projector. How do I do it? The projector has a blue multipin socket as standard and a plug in card, presumably for wireless networking. My Pogue manual does not mention projectors at all. I suspect I have to change the output from LCD screen to something else, but I can't find any way of doing this. Any help gratefully received

I can't believe this. This reply is actually in the manual, if I hadn't panicked at the sight of the connector! I am most grateful for the patient and factual manner of your reply. Best wishes, Terry

You may get faster service by reposting your query in the iBook G4 forums here:

The one you're in now is for the G4 mini-tower so the hardware is quite a bit different.

  • IBook to LCD TV

This might be a really silly question, but I do a lot of graphic work on my iBook and the screen is just too small. Will connecting it to my 32" lcd tv work? I know I need to buy the appropriate adapters and such, I just want to check that it will work first.

You are limited to 1024 x 768 resolution, Sarah.
This would make for very fuzzy images on a 32-inch TV.
I don't think you would find this an acceptable solution to your problem.

  • IBook thinks LCD is a Television

We have an old iBook that we use for presentations with a projector, and it recently stopped being able to send signal to the projector. If we boot the iBook with the projector attached, the initial grey screen with the Apple logo appears. When it switches to the blue background, the projector says "no signal." In the Displays preferences, the main display is called "Television" and it gives choices of different resolutions and MHz. (It should be "Color LCD" and without the MHz values.) The projector does not show up as a display.
Thinking that it surely was a software problem, I booted the bad iBook off a good iBook G3/500's HD (in target disk mode) and the same symptoms appeared. It is not a connection problem since the adaptor works fine when plugged into the other iBook. Zapping PRAM and resetting the PMU did not remedy the problem.
Does anyone have any ideas? Could a short circuit (perhaps in the wires going through the hinge) be confusing the display detection?
    Thanks,
    Mike
    iBook G3/500   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Although I was very skeptical, doing this fixed it...temporarily. After resetting the PRAM, the Displays preference pane came up as Color LCD. I put it to sleep, plugged in the projector, woke it, and that worked too. After telling everyone that it was fixed, I put it to sleep, disconnected the projector, woke it up, and then it had gone back to thinking it was a Television display. It still didn't detect the LCD correctly after restarting it. I was going to reset the PRAM again, but missed the start-up chime. (Another weirdness of this iBook is that the Start-up chime doesn't sound through the external speakers, only throught the head phone jack...at least some times.) After it booted the second time, miraculously, it again detected the LCD.
I know that for the second reboot the screen was opened around 90° but I don't remember how far it was opened the first time. Hopefully, the first reboot was a fluke and there is not a short in the LCD cords going through the hinge. (I suspect that my personal iBook G3/500 has come down with the dreaded cords-through-the-hinge problems where things go haywire if it is opened 90° of more (screen flickers, I lose WiFi connections, and my trackpad occasionally stops responding). The part arrived today.)

  • IBook internal LCD detected as VGA

The internal screen of my iBook is no longer recognized as a Color LCD screen, but rather as a VGA screen.
When I boot, I no longer see the grey screen with the apple and the swirl. When I boot with an external monitor attached, I see this boot logo on the external monitor only. The same is true when I boot into the Hardware Test (which gives no errors BTW), or any other software before the MAC OS X start (e.g. Open Firmware): nothing on the internal LCD.
In System Information, and System Preferences -> Displays, the internal screen is detected as "VGA", not as "Color LCD" as it should. When I connect an external monitor, the Information gives me 2 VGA screens.
I have tried pressing "Detect Displays", resetting NVRAM, PRAM and PMU. Nothing helps.
It is hard to believe that there is a hardware problem, because once MAC OS X has booted, I can use the internal LCD (although as a VGA screen, and I have the impression the quality is worse than it was before).
    Any help is really appreciated.
    iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

This weekend I finally got around to a complete re-install of my iBook to find out whether the problem is software related or not.
    This is what I did:
    1. Boot from install CD and remove all partitions from my disk. I now had a completely blank iBook with all software ran at boot contained in ROM.
    2. Reset PMU
    3. Reset NVRAM, PRAM using the keyboard
    4. Boot the machine. For this I had an external screen attached as my built-in screen doesn't work from Open Firmware.
    5. I got a folder with a concerned face on the external screen, nothing on the built-in screen. I now knew that the problem could not be resolved in SW.
    6. I booted into open Firmware using the O+F key conbination
    7. I reset NVRAM from the Open Firmware command line and rebooted (reset-all)
    8. Problem remained
    9. After that I started playing around in Open Firmware and saw that my screen was in its device list as built-in. Any command I gave to the screen however (eg blink-screen) was shown on the external screen.
    10. I gave up and went through a rather painful data recovery process.
Conclusion: Something seems to be wrong in ROM? I am sure however that my ROM was never flashed. I have made no progress.

  • IBook with LCD displays

    Hi,
For quite sometime now I am thinking of moving on to a bigger display with my iBook. One thing I am sure is, iBook won't work with Apple's cinema display.
I thought of looking on to other options like DELL 20" or Samsung. I am still not sure if my iBook will work with other external LCD monitors or not. I know it will be normal Analog VGA supported display connection.
Will it atleast look like a mac mini or powerbook hooked up to a cinema display (more work area on desktop and more windows can be opened)?
I tried connecting it to my CRT Monitor (19")...it was the same as on my iBook display. One big window open and no increase in work area. I hope i explained the problem fairly well. I want to see something like in those good pictures of apple cinema displays or dell connected to a PC

Thanks for the information. I heard about this "hac", but I wasn't sure that this would solve my problem. OK, thats nice. But somebody mentioned somewhere in some forum that this software voids the warranty on my iBook. Is this correct?? I asked literally to apple "Is there any way to solve my problem?" and they said NO.
Just wondering if this would do more harm to me than good - in long run.
