  • FYI - all of us with problems connecting ipod to windows

A bit of information for all of us that their ipods have stopped being recognised by windows!
I have done the 5 r's 4 times, reinstalled all drivers on windows etc etc ... still not being recognised!!
I have just called Apple Tech support and when I told them the date it stopped working and all the steps Ihave carried out, guess what .. they said send it back as there may be a technical problem with the hard drive on the ipod!!
Thought i'd let you all know!!

    Hey everyone
I have been fighting with this problem all night and have eventually solved the problem. The 5 R's sort of works but here is the solution. The problem rests with the latest version of the iPod updater software AND Microsoft's new Windows Defender as well which seem to have had an adverse effect on the software and iPod and how it behaves.
If you are having problems getting the iPod to be recognised on Windows follow the following guidance to uninstall iTunes completely
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
You need to start with a blank sheet and get rid of iTunes and clean up all previous installs of it. Make sure you also remove the iPod for Windows software too. Download the LATEST version of iTunes from the Apple web site (I think its 6.0.3) and install it on your machine.
Then, with the CD that came with your 5th Gen iPod install the iPod for Windows software that came on it. Don't worry about what version of iPod software you have on the iPod - it is fine - you can have up to 26-01-06 version which is what I have.
Connect up your iPod - Windows probably still wont recognise it. Don't worry here is the added solution and what the problem is.
The iPod has somehow become disabled in the Hardware profiles on Windows by the recent updates. Let the iPod be connected to your PC for at least 15 secs.
    1. Go to My Computer icon on the desktop and right mouse click - go to Properties.
    2. On the System Properties window that comes up click on the Hardward Tab.
    3. Go to the Device Manager button and click it.
    4. Under the listing that comes up do to Disk Drives. Click on the + icon to expand the list. You will now see Apple iPod listed (NB If you have any other external hard drives normally connected to your PC disconnect them beforehand so the drive letter that will be assigned to the iPod is E: - after this problem is fixed you can reattach any external drives fine)
    5. You should find that the Apple iPod drive is disabled (has a red cross over it)
    6. To enable it, right mouse click on its icon and select, enable.
    7. This will cause the iPod to be recognised by Windows and then iTunes should start up as normal.
FOR THOSE WHO DONT SEE THE IPOD IN THE HARD DRIVE LIST:
    1. Go to Add New Hardware and the plug and play properties should find the iPod and add it with the relevant hard drive drivers.
    Hope this helps everyone!

  • Connecting OSX to Windows help!

I've been trying in vain for a long time to get my iBook connected to my windows xp pc. What I have done so far is connect my iBook to my router via a lan cable, while the router itself is connected to my pc via USB.
When this is all set up the Sharing page of OSX System preferences tells me that Windows users can connect to my ibook on 192.168.1.xx\myname (I have checked Personal File Sharing and Windows Sharing). However when I go into Windows it cant detect the iBook. I cannot ping it and its not showing in the network. I am at a loss what to do.
It also doesnt detect the iBook when I connect the lan cable directly to the pc (in fact i cant even get an ip address that way). Also the network window in OSX isnt showing for some reason.
    Please I need some help!

I have/had a similar problem. My Windows XP Pc could "see" my Macbook but wouldn't let me connect to it. The only way round this was to use
My Computer>Tools>Map Network Drive... and then specify the IP address that my Macbook had told me to use (in my case "192.168.0.3"). I then got a dialog box on the PC asking me to enter a username and password. This is the "short" username that the Mac creates for you. I entered these and the PC created a network drive that allowed me to see all the folders on the Mac.
    Hope this helps.

  • Connecting iPod to Windows and OS X

I know on the earlier version of iPods, if you connected your iPod through PC first then connect them through Macs, it gets a hardware failure. Atleast it did that for me couple times. Now I was wondering with iPod Touch, it'll have the same problem. I uploaded all the songs on my desktop, windows, and I have some songs on my Macbook, OS X, that I want in the iPod. So I was wondering if it'll have the problem again.

An iPod formatted for Mac won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. You can as you suggest reformat your iPod on Windows if you want to use it on both platforms as Macs can read Windows formatting (there have been reports of Windows iPods not working on a Mac but they would tend to be the exception). Alternatively there are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows, this is one for instance: XPlay 2
You would also need to download USB drivers and XPlay or Anapod to connect to Windows 98 as there has never been a version of iTunes for Windows 98 or ME: Anapod Explorer Windows 98/ME Support

  • Connecting iPod to Windows 7

My 5th generation iPod was loaded using my (now defunct) XP computer. My new computer runs Windows 7. When I connect the iPod, it charges fine & I can see it in the Devices and Printer folder. Unfortunately, it is being read as a "mass storage" device. ITunes won't communicate with it either. I'd like to add some new music to my iPod. Is there a patch or other thing I need to do to get Windows 7 to communicate with this wonderful device?

Thanks for your response! I appreciate your help! I unfortunately can't get my ipod to be recognized as a device in itunes, so I can't get to the menu you are talking about. Any suggestions about how to get itunes to recongnize my ipod? I have tried reinstalling itunes several times. I have Windows 64 bit for my OS and downloaded the appropriate itunes. I have tried pretty much every troubleshooting idea that apple provides. Still no luck. Windows recognizes the device and I have made sure the drivers are up to date. Any other suggestions for me? Thanks in advance for being willing to help!

  • Can not connect ipod to Windows 7 64 Bit

    http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/893/errrorscreenshot1.png
This is a screenshot of the error i get when i plug in my new Itouch (purchased today). I am running Windows 7 64 bit. I have spent 3 hours looking on multiple forums that each suggest doing different things. I have tried removing and uninstalling everything that has anything even remotely to do with itunes, to no success. I believe it may be related to that i am missing the Apple Mobile Device program that others are suggesting i uninstall and reinstall with itunes. There is no file in my program list to uninstall, nor is there a service that i can reboot.
I have tried to reacquire this file, but when i reinstall the latest itunes (which i have redownloaded several times, thinking that the download was the problem), it does not install AMDS, nor the program. I assume this is because of windows 7.
Also, i have managed to get my itouch to work without any error whatsoever on my mother's Vista 32 bit laptop.
I also use my current computer for a 4th generation ipod nano that i have had no errors with whatsoever. Help would be much appreciated, as i've got nowhere else to turn, and nothing i havent tried.

wish my problem was this easy lol....
All you have to do is click the "INSTALL ITUNES 9.1 (64Bit)" ...... Instead of "INSTALL ITUNES 9.1 (32Bit)"
...the error says specifically "Run Itunes installer to remove Itunes, then install 64-bit version of Itunes" .....

  • Just started having problem connecting ipod to windows xp

I have a ipod video 5th gen. Bought it about a month ago and has worked fine. I was able to charge and sync with itunes with no prob. Just recently when i connect the ipod with my usb cable, it comes up with an error saying "the usb device attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows dosent reconingze it". Now I cant can't sync with itunes, charge, nor does it show up in my computer. No changes have been made to my PC except for regular windows updates. Anyone have an answer or work around?

  • Connecting iPod to Windows freezes computer

I have the newest version of iTunes installed on my computer. When the program is running and I try to connect my iPod, iTunes freezes and I have to force quit the program. iTunes does however, recognize my iPod right before it freezes.
How can I keep iTunes from freezing on me?

    Let's try it this way....
    1) Was it ever working before?
    2) Between the time it was working and the time it stopped working, what changed, either on your computer or on the iPod? Did you update any software (including iTunes)? Did you install any new USB devices?
It is starting to sound like the problem is an iPod that got corrupted during a sync due to communication timing problems with iTunes 10.5, but I won't know until I learn whether it was working before and what started the problems was an upgrade to 10.5. If that is the problem, then there are a series of suggestions in the summary post that I linked that should help you figure things out.
This is why I need you to carefully think about what changed between the last time it was working and now. It could be as little as the iPod being assigned a different drive letter.

  • Connecting ipod to windows xp, wants me to reset??

I have been using my ipod on my mac mini but it crashed the other day. I have been trying to use my ipod with my pc and i downloaded itunes and the ipod updater for windows but it wants me to reset my ipod and i will lose all my music. and my other computer crashed so it will be gone forever! what do i do??

That's actually normal in XP, when connecting removable drives (which is what the iPod is classified as). XP just opens the contents of the removable disk so you can see it and copy things to or from it.
I think Apple has made changes to the iPodService.exe and iTunesHelper.exe to try to make it more compatable/standard for removable drives on XP.
You can download a tool from Microsoft called TweakUI where you can set what happens when you connect removable drives, and a WHOLE bunch of other things.

  • Any way to connect iPod to Windows XP via network?

Is there is a way, app or not, to connect a 2G touch to Windows XP via a WiFi network connection? For instance, once it picks up a WiFi connection, is there any way I can "see" the iPod in network places etc. Mainly I want to do this so I can access my music from my workstation and copy it over (temporarily), if that's at all possible, but I could see the value in transporting other files (I'm aware of air sharing). Thanks in advance.

Darn. Okay, how about the alternative: If I could store some mp3s in a folder on iPod, do you know or suggest the best method to allow me to access it from a computer on the network without plugging iPod in? Thanks agian.

  • Problems Connecting Ipod To Windows

Just been having some trouble with the iPod.
Has been working fine up until just now.
Plug it in and I get a little bubble in the corner saying "The USB device is not recognised and has malfunctioned" or something along those lines. Strange I thinks, so I unplug it from under the ipod and try again. Same problem. I try it in a different USB socket and it works fine. Back to the USB port with the problems and I get the message again. Unplug it and plug a USB mouse into problem USB port, it works fine. Plug the ipod back in and get the message about defice malfunctioning again. Plug ipod into the other USB socket I tried when it worked fine, and I get the malfunction message again. Try it back in the problem port and it still has the problem.
Any ideas guys? It was working fine up until just now!
    Tom
P.S. Have tried different cables and a reboot.
Have latest iTunes and latest Ipod software and had been working fine with these up until just recently.

I've got windows Vista, and I can't remember if I needed to install a driver for the iPod?
If you did have install a driver, un-install that driver and re-install it. It sounds to me as though it is a driver fault, corrupt maybe. I KNOW Windows reckons it doesn't need drivers, but then when is Windows right? It's Microsoft for chrissakes lol.
You could try looking in device manager when you plug it in. If it shows up as a fault with the explanation mark, just "Unistall this device" and try again.
