Connect laptop to a external monitor with laptop screen off

I need to connect my laptop to an external monitor but i need my laptop screen off.
Is it possible? I use an hdmi or vga connection, gnome as DE and ati 5700 graphic card

first type xrandr to know the name of the two displays... then
xrandr --output laptopdisplayname --off --output monitorname --preferred
That will turn of the laptop display and turn on the monitor....
But I don't know if that command runs on gnome.. if it runs try to download "arandr" gui app of xrandr from yaourt

Certainly not without a dock but even with, HP laptop docks pretty well limit you to one of the external monitor ports, even if there are two on the dock. We have used a device called an Atlona AT-HDPIX2 which is a usb to hdmi adapter. It provides a third monitor capability for a laptop....use the native external monitor port and the internal laptop display and then this device gives a third monitor which is full configurable from the Windows 7 display interface...clone, extend, etc. It allows full HD resolution and is responsive enough for even light gaming. HP makes no true docking station for your laptop.

Is there a way to turn the laptop screen off and use an external monitor when running Boot Camp and XP pro.
I have bluetooth keyboard & usb mouse. Display is cloned but when you close the lid the screen stays on.Some forums indicates its OK for the screen to stay on when closed, but it does get warm.

Further info: I am a complete newbie to Mac. Had three macs prior to 2000 then four PCs. Just come back and struggling a bit with the unfamiliarity. On my old PC laptop I could simply switch from the laptop screen to the large external monitor (and back) with the F4 function key. While I can get the background image from my MBA to display, that's it. Until I noticed on the far left of the external monitor, the very edge of one of the web pages I was on. So Idragged it over to display in the centre. But that's all that's there. And now I have gone out of those web pages but they are still displaying on the monitor. There is some wierd disconnect. I'm sure it is just a setting thing. Will keep searching for answer but any advice welcome!

Your dsplay is getting extended onto the external monitor. Chcnage the setting to duplicate it or only display on the external monitor and you should be fine,

Connecting Dynadock to a second external monitor with a splitter

Hey guys -
I have a Samsung Series 9 which I have connected to the Dynadock3.0. I have two additional external monitors which I wanted to connect via the dynadock. I used a vga splitter to connect to the two monitors (dell u2312hm) via vga cables and then used the vga-to-dvi converter to connect to the Dynadock. Unfortunately the computer only recognizes both the external monitors as one screen and while I am able to extend between my laptop screen and the external monitors, both the external monitors duplicate the same screen.

How do I connect 2 external monitors with full HD to my MacBook Pro?

I would like to connect up my 2 external monitors to my MacBook Pro. But I want to have full HD resolution. I want to have the desktop stretched so I don't want mirror displays. What is the best way to accomplish this? Is there an adapter that I should use?

Thanks for the reply. Haven't gotten anything as yet. Just that I burned out my older PowerBook using it as a primary screen w/ a secondary 20" monitor. Would be nice if the MacBooks could be used as a CPU only, connect 2 different monitors, and use the LCD screen when portability is needed. But I suppose that is why Apple makes different types of computers. I know I can rig the video SCSI cable to bypass to LCD screen and use the other built-in monitor. But there goes the warentee and any kind of AppleCare... not that I have ever used it, (until a day after it has expired!)

Being that I am a mercenary graphic designer and need to be able to work whenever, and where-ever I need to, the MacPro is not my hardware of choice. As well, I don't have $4000 in my budget. But man do those machines rock! Just think of what NASA could have done with one of those in 1969 when we were going to the moon! But now that the U.S. has decided that manned space travel and even scientific space exploration is not worthy of having a budget, the MacPros are religated to creating new episodes of Jersey Shores!

You are referring to a feature called Clamshell Mode, please read Clamshell Mode setup for instructions.
BTW when posting when you use generalities such as "have tried everything" this tells us nothing. When posting please be specific and try to paint a complete picture. It just makes things easier for those trying to help you.

Connect 2 externa monitors with different resolutions?

Is it possible to oonnect 2 external monitors, with different resolutions to a mbp pro?
I've read some about the "matrox solution", but that one requires that the monitors uses the same resolution.
And, just to be clear, I don't want to just duplicate the screens, one should be primary.

You may want to phone OWC and ask whether what you want to do is possible if one monitor is connected to the mini-Displayport and the other is connected to a USB port using this adapter:

Note that the OWC adapter, like most USB video adapters I've seen advertised, is limited to a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200, so you won't want to use it with a monitor whose native resolution is higher than that.

2 External Monitors with the T430s with Intel HD4000

I have read several multiple monitor threads but could not get a clear solution to this.
Model: I have a T430s with Intel HD4000 graphics.
Desired set up: 2 External Monitors + Lenovo LCD
Problem: It seems that I can only drive one external monitor. I'd like to drive two external monitors, as I did previously with my T420.
What I've tried: I have a dock and have tried VGA + DVI for the external monitors, as well as DVI + DVI. Neither setup has worked. It always greys out the third monitor in the Windows Display options.
Any thoughts on how to drive two external monitors with the T430s? Clarity is appreciated. Thank you!

Using external monitor with powerbook G4 with a damaged display

Hi,
My powerbook's display has been seriously damaged from being banged from the outside. The screen now has a starburst and a series of heartbreaking lines that make it unusable. Because my budget really doesn't allow me to purchase a new computer right now, I am thinking about connecting it to an external monitor as a temporary fix. Is this a possibility for me? Would it have to be an apple monitor or can I just go ahead and get one of the cheapest ones that I can find? What equipment would I need? Is it possible to use the keyboard and mouse that are part of my laptop or do I need to have external ones? Thank you so much (I'm not exactly a computer genius, as you can tell)!

Lid Closed Mode: TiBooks supports "lid closed" (or clamshell) mode, which leaves the built-in display off and dedicates all video RAM to an external display. To used lid closed mode, your 'Book must be plugged into the AC adapter and connected to an external display and a USB mouse and keyboard (you might also want to consider external speakers). Power up your 'Book until the desktop appears on the external display and then close the lid. Your 'Book will go to sleep, but you can wake it by moving the mouse or using the keyboard. The built-in display will remain off, and the external monitor will become your only display. Since all video RAM is now dedicated to the external monitor, you may have more colors available at higher resolutions. The TiBook is designed to run safely in closed lid mode, but if yours runs hot (perhaps due to overclocking or high ambient temperatures), you may want to open the lid when in lid closed mode: The screen will remain off and the computer will more readily vent heat from the CPU.
To resume use of the internal display, you need to disconnect the external display, put the computer to sleep, and then open the lid. This will wake up your 'Book and restore use of the built-in display.

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro. I use Premiere Pro CS5 to video edit on. It's fine but when it comes to grading it's nearly impossible on such a small screen.
I'd like to buy a 27inch external monitor (Asus, Samsung, Dell, whatever - haven't decided yet) for when I'm editing at work (which is most days). My query is regarding the resolutions. Obviously my MacBook Pro displays a resolution of 1280x800, so if I buy a monitor with a resolution of 2560x1440 for example, what gets displayed?
And also does the connecting cable make any difference? For example, if I'm connecting by Thunderbolt out to HDMI, then an HDMI to HDMI cable to the external monitor, what happens then? Or should I be using a Mini Display Port to Display Port connecting lead?
I guess all I really want to know is, will it work? But also, am I wasting my money buying an external monitor with a 2560x1440 resolution? Should I just go for one that's the same res at my MacBook Pro?
I've never really understood how these things all work!

I think it will work. You would need a mini displayport to (single link) DVI adapter to hook up that monitor.
Not sure what kind of problems you had with the ViewSonic but I'm guessing the Dell is probably a better monitor anyhow.

Transcoding Problems & Use Of An External Monitor with FCE HD

My department is slowly making the change over to HDV and we have a few immediate concerns regarding FCE HD.
When printing to video, its takes about 4-5 minutes to Transcode per 1 minute of footage.
Is there any way to shorten or eliminate this time period? With our students making plenty of 10 minute videos, this Transcoding Time could clog up hours and hours of time in our editing rooms.
Also, I am told that the latest version of FCE is not yet compatible with the use of external monitors for showing footage off of a FCE timeline. I hear there are certain expensive converter boxes you can purchase to remedy this problem.
Is there any other solution to this???

Have you rendered all the footage first, and mixed down the audio? (The commands are Sequence>RenderAll>Both and Sequence>RenderOnly>Mixdown). You should do both before you export any video. Select all clips in your timeline and run both commands.
FCE can show your video (what you called timeline) via FireWire out. You would need a Firewire->analog converter to connect your external monitor. The Canopus ADVC110 is a nice little unit that will do an excellent job, currently about $240USD. Alternatively, many people use their miniDV camcorders as a passthrough device to do the same conversion so they can watch their video on a real video monitor while editing.

No, nothing will prevent the computer from going to sleep when you close its display except third-party hacks that are designed to do exactly that. I strongly advise against using any of those, as they may interfere with successful entry into clamshell mode (and they carry other downside risks as well). Just wait until the computer is asleep (with its sleep light pulsing), then press any key on the keyboard. It sounds as though your setup is working as it's designed to do.

Only black screen on the external monitor with intel-virtual-output

I can activate my external monitor with "intel-virtual-output" and the monitor is switching on. But I can only see a black screen.
In the settings of gnome I can see my external monitor and configure it - but it shows nothing.

Intel-virtual-output used to work fine but since it got upgraded the virtual output stays black.
I tried downgrading the xf86-video-intel package but there is a dependency conflict.
