Connect laptop to imac

hi, im not sure of how to do the following: i have a dell laptop and an imac. i want to be able to connect the laptop to the imac to that i can see the dell screen on the imac. its just that my dell laptop isnt working and i want to be able to see if i can get an external display on the imac so that i can diagnose the problem. can anyone advise what cable i need to do this? pretty confused with all the cables on the imac store!

hi can somebody please help me with connecting my new HP Laptop G60 to wirelessly connect to my iMac shared internet? I see my iMac on the HP connect list but when i select it ... it doesnt even give me an option to type my secure password. I get an error that it cannot connect.

In case others want help on this. I found the following details also handy:

Specifically, step 4 and 6 are crucial!:
1. In Mac OS X, enable Internet Sharing to computers using Airport
2. In AirPort Options, select 128-bit WEP encryption and enter a 13-character password
3. In Windows, add a new wireless network
4. Enter the SSID and select WEP encryption with Shared Network Authentication (not Open)
5. Uncheck “The key is provided automatically” and enter the 13-character password
6. In the Authentication tab, be sure that “Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication” is unchecked

You might want to consider changing the name of your wireless network on the AirPort Extreme and then test to see if all devices can connect that way.
If you decide to do this, leave any apostrophes, dollar signs, exclamation marks, etc out of the wireless network name. Use only letters and numbers in the wireless network name.

Printing from a PC Laptop on a USB printer connected to an iMac

I just replaced my desktop PC with a new iMac and have been fighting with setting up a working network for the past few days. I have managed to get file sharing going, but have unable to get the printer working from my wireless laptop.
The printer is physically connected to the iMac via USB connection.
The DSL Modem/router is physically connected to the iMac via Ethernet cable.
The Laptop connects with the iMac via wireless connection with the DSL Modem/router.
I can't get the laptop to recognize that the iMac has a printer installed, and often it doesn't even want to acknowledge that the iMac exists.
Please help!!

I was able to print after doing this, now I just have to see what happens next time I attach this laptop to my home network!!!

Thank you for your suggestion but I have already had a couple of phone sessions with NETGEAR support and they don't see any problems with the router settings etc. They referred me to Apple support, who helped me discover that it is possible to communicate with the router but only if I turn off the encryption/security software, which I don't want to do. The frustrating thing is that I can connect wirelessly from a laptop running Windows 7 and two Anroid smart phones, with WPA-2 in place, without a problem. Do you have any other ideas?

I am looking to find a way to connect on my iMac through my windows based laptop and specifically on my Movies folder. i have my laptop connected on my TV. On my Preferences i have the file sharing turned on.

Thanks. These drivers are for the audio, etc. for a dell laptop I purchased used. ( Needed something cheap for a training video that would only run on Windows. Tried Emedia player but picture was too fuzzy.) Dell support said I should contact Apple support for instructions on how to get the drivers onto the jumpdrive. Any tips on doing that?

[SOLVED] connecting wirelessly to iMac problem

installed a fresh arch on my laptop and i'm trying to connect wirelessly to iMac internent sharing
so i can continue the installation however, when i
dhcpcd eth1
it says:
dhcpcd: eth1 waiting for carrier
dhcpcd: timed out
and i'm unable to connect
i've looked around but could not find any answer to this problem
i came to conclude, the problem might be because the iMac bridge the connection however not sure
how to fix this or what shall i do next now
i tried to use static IP but didn't know how to set it up or from where to get the data i need

Are you sure the interface is good?
Show your:
ifconfig -a
, please.
If right your interface, try install netcfg, or dhclient, and try again.

Help please connecting PC and iMac

I am trying to help my cousin connect his Samsung pc laptop with his brand new iMac through his wireless network.
There are all kinds of partial connections going on, but the one main connection he needs still eludes me. And, that is his Samsung Laptop and iMac do not "see," let alone connect with each other.
His Samsung Laptop has Macdrive 8 installed, & is running Windows 7.
I have an Macbook Pro, and am also connected to his wireless network. I can see both his iMac and Samsung laptop in my finder's "Shared," section. (I can access the iMac's files, and though I can see the Samsung, when I try to Connect, it says, "Connection Failed."
With his Samsung laptop, under Network, you can both see my MBP, and can access it's shared files too, (so Macdrive is working.) Yet, his iMac is strangely not seen, let alone able to connect, to the Samsung laptop.
His iMac can also see and access my MBP's files, but can not see, let alone connect to the Samsung laptop.
His iMac, and my MBP, both have Screen Sharing, File Sharing, Remote Login and Bluetooth Sharing all "ON."
I need his Samsung laptop and iMac to be able to access each others files.
Any ideas?

macdrive is not necesarry for accsessing network shares. it's for accessing external HFS formatted HDDs, connected via USB/FW to the windows machine.
did you check, if the SMB option is activated under filesharing on the imac?
try temporary deactivating firewalls on both machines.

Trying to install a printer that is connected to my iMac to my pc

My Hp wireless printer is connected to my iMac via USB. I am trying to find the printer using my PC laptop. Both computers are networked via our router. When searching for printers on the laptop it isn't finding the printer.

Is the printer sharing preferences enabled?

How do I add an Epson printer connected to an iMac on the network to the printer list on my MacBook Pro? I cannot get it to show up in the list for printers to add.

That only works if the printer is itself a network printer. You can't do it if it is directly connected to another computer on the network unless it is configured to be a Shared Printer on the other computer.

We just added a new printer and bluetooth connection to our iMac. Now iTunes does not recognize our iPads as devices. Have already tried restarting everything. Any other suggestions?

I used a miniDisplayport->DVi converter in the TB port of the imac
thats the best performance because DVI like Displayport are both digital interfaces

so you need a miniDisplayport to dvi or hdmi depending on the inputs on your tv
and a cable and thats it
