Connect Linux-based external drive to MBP running Leopard?

I had the misfortune to have two Western Digital NetCenter 500GB external drives have issues in less than 12 months (Tip: don't buy one . The 1st NetCenter's browser-based admin console became unavailable and the drive invisible via Ethernet, but visible via USB. The 2nd NetCenter is not even visible via USB.
The NetCenter drives are formatted with Reiser file system but has firmware included in the enclosure so it can be connected to PCs or Macs via Ethernet or USB.
I removed the drive from the NetCenter enclosure and put it into standard USB enclosure. The drive spins-up and is "found" by my MBP running Leopard but the only option is to reformat the drive. I tried to pull the data off on a borrowed PC. Windows recognizes a USB external drive is connected but the drive not visible in the Disk Manager. I'm 95% certain my data is fine, I just need to find a way to have my MBP recognize the drive.
Anyone have a recommendation on a h/w or s/w configuration in which Leopard will recognize the drive?
Thanks!
Bill

I have a Simpleshare NAS Drive by SimpleTech which also uses the Reiser File System (RFS). Unfortunately, there is not much you can do with it. As I understand it, the RFS needs the Linux OS that was built into the drive in order for the Mac to see the data. RFS is not really compatible with the Mac file ssystem and not all Mac files will get copied to the drive anyway.
My suggestion is to put the drive back into the original enclosure and see if you can get it up and running long enough to get you data off of it.

  • Is it OK to use USB 2.0 connection for Glyph external drive and Mac Pro as project drive?

Is it OK to use a USB 2.0 connection for Glyph external drive and Mac Pro as project drive? I was told by Sweetwater tech support to use Firewire, but both the FW400 and FW800 connections crash my audio interface software mixer (Presonus' "Universal Control" software).
Both Firewire connections also create a 10 second hang for each Command-Save that I do.
USB 2.0 for the external drive seems to be working so far, but is there some reason I should be wary of using this as my go-to project drive? In other words, I am imagining that there was probably some definite reason that the tech support guy mentioned not to use it. But maybe not. It's a brand new Glyph. In any event, it's nice to have the 10 second hang eliminated, and I was just looking for some advice, since digging into the Presonus software issue could take some time.

If you have a mac pro, why not stick the external HDD inside via one of your many SATA cables & have it run 9 times faster than your USB?
Or stick a HDD CADDY in your mac pro, so you can slot in a full sized 3TB HDD for recording, and when you are done, pull it out & slip it in an external enclosure if you need to take it places?

  • PC can't connect to AEB external drive, but Mac can.

Until recently I was able to connect to the external hard drive I have attached to my 1 generation Airport Extreme base station, version 5.6.1, running firmware version 7.6.4. It just stopped showing up one day and it gives me errors when I try to connect saying credentials are wrong, but they're not. I've tried everything I could find, including changing some Windows settings, reverting firmware, resets and a lot more. It used to automatically connect at start up, and showed up as a 'Z' drive, and worked great. The drive is fine as well, that was my first concern. I just connected to it from the File Browser app from the app store, and my other Apple devices, MPB, Apple TV, both see it. Just not my Windows 7 pc. This was my last resort after many hours of troubleshooting. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

    Standard network troubleshooting.
    1. If you are using wireless plug in by ethernet.. never trust wireless.
    2. If the computer gets an IP from the Extreme.. ping the extreme in a command window.. does it respond? It must respond before worrying about all the rest.. Windows can auto decide it is now in a public location and ram up the firewall. Make sure your network location is home.. and if necessary turn off the firewall.. the TC must respond at least by IP.. name as well would be good.
    3. Open the Control Panel admin tools and make sure bonjour is running as a service. If it has failed stop and restart it.
    4. Try mounting the hard disk directly by IP in windows explorer.
\\10.0.1.1 (replace with the actual IP address).
    5. If it is only wireless that is the problem.. you probably had some sneaky windows security patch install and that ruined everything.. windows patches are often 2 steps forward.. 3 backwards.. you can no longer be attacked because you no longer have internet connection!!

  • Need help connecting to my external drive

I have an EXTERNAL drive connected to my iMac G5 running 10.4.11. I can not access this drive via the network from my MacBook running 10.5.7. I've check file sharing on both machines prefs.
I can connect to the iMac's HD from my MacBook via my network, but just can't seem to locate the EXTERNAL thats connected to it. I downloaded Sharepoint and still can not get my remote computer to find the external drive.

    Great news, thanks!
Leopard will be the last OS for PPC Macs, so eventually you'll have to, but I'm thinking Tiger should be compatible for another year or two, but in a couple of years Leopard may no longer be sold by Apple, I'm seeing Tiger Install discs go for $200+ nowadays.

  • Can losing connection with an external drive lead to its failure?

My iTunes library is currently wireless, through my Airport Extreme, so I can use it both with my Macbook Air and my iMac. Of course the downside is only one computer can access it at a time and I'm limited by the range of the Airport, but it works for me... Since my library is too big for iTunes Match anyways and I live in a small appartment it's perfect.
Anyways, my problem is, this setup is fairly new, and a few times yesterday while I was working on adding new music to my library (ripping my CDs in lossless), I got the error message that connection was lost with my iTunes drive!
My internet didn't seem to flinch though, which is weird. But it doesn't seem to be the "the disk was not ejected properly" external disk error that's been going around, as I HAVE that **** problem with another of my drives... (connected via cable) and it's not the same error message.
This one is just saying the connection was lost... like Airport had the hiccups or something.
Time for me to click on "ignore" and I could go back to what I was doing.
Except twice, this happened WHILE a track was importing into iTunes!
The first time, I got an error message saying it was impossible to read or write to the device... I was scared... closed iTunes, re-opened... and it looked like nothing happened! Phew. Even the freshly imported tracks were there, up the to one that was importing when it lost connection, which of course wasn't imported.
But then it happened again... while it was, again, importing...
This time, restarting iTunes didn't cut it.
When I opened Airport Utility to check, I had yellow question mark, and a message saying the attached drive was failing, or corrupted, something like that (can't remember), to plug it directly in my computer and repair it!
I did that, opened Disk Utility... and the drive won't mount.
I tried the few tricks I know, still won't mount.
So now I'm in the middle of creating a disk image on one of my other external drives (it's been hours and only a third has been done, I'm crossing my fingers it doesn't just freeze, give me an error message or tell me there's not enough space... because I couldn't check how much space was used since it wouldn't mount... and it has been a while since I checked).
I'm also in the middle of checking for data recovery with my old StellarPhoenix app... not even sure what it could do or if it still works...
But all that to wonder : can a simple network disconnection be enough to do that???
If so, how come people rely on NAS, how come so many use Airport in conjunction with external drives?! It just doesn't make sense to me...
Maybe this was just a weird coincidence? Or maybe I'm taking the problem the wrong way, and the lost connection happened because the drive was failing? In that case I just find it weird that I didn't see any sign of that while it was connected directly to my iMac, right until a few days ago!
...Gee, I'm tired of buying external drives!
For the curious, this one is a 2TB Samsung (Iomega), bought in december 2010, so just 2 years old.

    Thanks edex67!
Now the question would be, are numerous losses of connection in a day normal for Airport Extreme, or is mine failing?
Can't find a model number and the serial doesn't lead anywhere, but I'm pretty sure it dates back to 2008, the second generation.
A small update: Problem seems to definitely be just in the filesystem since after formatting all seems well, while I can't restore with my disk image, as after hours of scanning it, I now get the error message that Disk Utility can't scan it because of an internal error.
Now let's hope I can save the data, because even though I regularly did backups of that disk, I would still lose those hours of new imports and organization I had just done when it failed...
I'l look for Gparted also... thanks!

  • Failure to connect to an external drive

I have saved a number of files from my old PC to an external drive (WD) to tranfer them to my Mac. Trying to connect the drive the drive gets recognised in Finder (get a number a identity in Finder but also the message "Connection Failure". Trying to click "Connect as" I am asked for the Password to the "server" but I have not set up a password. Tried wit hthe Admin Passwords for bot my Mac and my PC without success. Would appreciate some advice on how to resolve this.

In your case the drive could be internal........
The advantage to use several disks stands in the fact that the program and the OS will access at the first disk, the loops and samples will be read from the second and the audio data flow will have the third disk completely dedicated to that job.
But this arguments are right only if you work with lots of tracks, sampled sounds and loops, otherwise it's pretty useless to have all those HDs.
The effects must stay where they are (/Library/Audio/Plugins/Components)!

  • Connecting Powerbook to External drive on another computer

    Hello.
Something odd has happened since installing the latest 10.4.6 update.
I have an iMac G5, to which is connected an external LaCie Hard drive (via USB)
Before the update, I was able to connect to the hard drive via the wireless network from my Powerbook.
I woudl click on Finder > Network and see my iMac listed.
then I would click connect and it would give me an option to select the volume I wish to mount.
Now it does not do that. It seems to be connecting via FTP..with no mounting options, which is odd because in 18 months it has never done that.
Can anyone help and repair back to how it used to be please?
    Thanks
    Glenn

Hello - I understand and respect your opinion, however, if something worked fine before (the 10.4.6 update) without extra software, then it should be able to do it again.
I don't really want to add more software if I don't need to.

  • Every time I lose connection to my external drive.....

I keep my music and my videos on an external drive.  However, whenever  a connection to that drive is lost iTunes will change where it looks for my media files; it defaults back to my interna HD.  Is it possible to make it stop doing this?  Almost every time I open iTunes I have to open preferences to check and make sure it's still looking for my content on my external drive.
    Thanks,
    Brian

Turn on the external and make sure it is mounted before starting iTunes.  This is one of the downsides to keeping iTunes collection on an external drive.

  • External Drives on MBP for recording

I'm a logic9  'power' user whose about to make 'as live' recording with 2 synth players and full rhythm section and 3 vocalists.
Historically I've recorded the standard way ie   Logic9 on the internal drive and 2 discrete FW800 drives for samples and audio recording respectively. This was doable on my 2008 iMac but is no longer coping with current larger projects.
    Enter the MBP
My issue comes from the lack of a FW400 port on the MBP for my Apogee Ensemble. At the moment I'm trialling a 24 track project including 2 software instruments streaming samples from daisy chained drives as follows
    MBP FW800<LacieRugged500<FW400ApogeeEnsemble<FW400LacieRugged(Audio Drive
When all 26tracks are recording I'm getting just one of my 8 'cores' maxing out. Is the daisy chain causing this
I know its a Logic scenario but posted here cos I'm thinking distributing external drives across the various MBP ports may be the solution
    Any suggestions??
Is there a decent FW800/400 Giant hub that you'd recommend?

This is how Id expect to see the MBP looking just prior to recording a bogstandard LP9 piano.
Now see below Even recording 6 simultaneously gives me just a little more strain on 1 thread
Now however cometh the problem. I really wanna use IVORYII . It sounds great and I have a top notch SSD MBP. BUT look at what happens below
And in fact the one thread actually maxed out a number of times causing the piano to 'distort' .
As I mentioned above my FW daisy chain is as follows
    MBP FW800<LacieRugged500Gb(5400)<FW400ApogeeEnsemble< 2ndLacieRugged500Gb(5400)(Audio Drive
This is so frstraing What am I missing?
The self same project performs better on my 2008 IMac!!!

  • CS5.5 crashes when connecting to an external drive

I'm using the blackmagic preset and Premiere Pro CS5.5 for the MAC and it is crashing.
It was working at first but when ever I try to import any file from my external drive it crashes.
I just have to click on the drive to search and it crashes.
Now it also crashes when trying to make a new project.  Every time I click the external drive to save the new project there, bam!  It crashes.
I also noticed when edditing prores files that when ever I added an effect to a video file, it started looking off.  Weird colors, lines through the image.
CS5.5 is updated, so is my video card as far as I can tell.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    Please help!

And now when I try to save a project to my MAC HD it says "The scratch disks are right protected or unavailable.  To open this project, the right disks will be set to your documents folder"  When I continue... it crashes.
The error then is... "Could not create project file!"
I'm not sure what's going on??

  • Install Leopard on an External Drive on a Snow Leopard Mac Book Pro

    Hi
I have a MBP 17/CTO 2.66GHz i7, which came installed with Snow Leopard.
I've used boot camp to install Windows 7.
I've attempted to install Leopard 10.5.4 on an external drive.
    The steps I've taken:
1 - Connected my WD Passport on the Firewire Port
2 - Partitioned the drive. The first partition is 100GB, Mac OS/X Extended (journal) and I've selected the GUID Partition Scheme
3 - Inserted the Mac OS/X Leopard DVD, and followed the instructions to restart
4 - On restart I have three options. Mac OS, Windows and Install Mac OS\X
    5 - I select Install Mac OS\X.
6 - The disc spins for a few moments and then the laptop freezes
    Beware of the following issue:
1 - On restart more often than not, the DISC will spin and then the laptop will freeze.
2 - To overcome this, restarting pressing the ALT (option) Key.
3 - You should see your boot options. If you do not see "Install Mac OS\X", then eject and reinsert the disc.
The question maybe why would I want to have an Leopard Installation when I have Snow Leopard. The software I develop has thrown up a number of differences between Leopard and Snow Leopard, hence I need both OS's to support my software.
I mentioned this to the Apple Store before I purchased my machine. They put me through to a senior technician at Apple Care, who told me it would be possible to have the set up I am after; and to contact Apple Care if I ran into any difficulties.
After I received my laptop and ran into the problems I described above I contacted Apple Care, only to be told by a senior technician that it should be possible to install Leopard on an external drive, but Apple Care cannot provide any support or assistance.
I really do like the laptop and would much rather not return the laptop; but I really do need the setup described.
Anyway I have tried a number of different approaches:
1 - Having no partitions (so just the single partition)
2 - Trying all three Partition Schemes:
    - GUILD Partition Table
    - Apple Partition Map
    - Master Boot Record
All resulting in the same problem.
I can confirm the external drive does appear as bootable in disc info.
My guess is one of the following is preventing the install:
1 - It is simply not possible to install an earlier version of Mac OS\X than 10.6 on the laptop I have, even if I tried to install on an external drive. This restriction is built into some hardware confirguration. So even if I wiped the internal hard drive or added a new partition to the internal hard drive, I would not be able to install 10.5.4. I say this may be a reason as the second technician told me the CPU has built into it a process which prevents installing older versions of Mac OS/X, but that it should NOT restrict installation on an external harddrive.
2 - When trying to install Mac OS/X, a search is carried out for an external drive which has the correct format. For some reason it may be that this search is not finding my external drive?
I'm a little stuck here and quite disapointed that the support promised by Apple Care for assistance in setting this up, is now not forth coming.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, as ideally I would prefer to keep and not return the laptop, it's a beautiful piece of machinery.
    Cheers
    Parmy

    The mystery continues...
I have an older MBP (2.33 GHz Intel Core Duo) which came installed with Tiger. I can confirm I purchased a genuine copy of Leopard (10.5.4) from the Apple Store and it’s not an OEM version. I installed 10.5.4 without a hitch on my old MBP internal drive. It is the only OS installed on my old MBP.
Using my older MBP (which through software updates is now running 10.5.7), I managed to install 10.5.4 onto my external HD (WD My Passport Studio – 640GB FireWire 800).
However; on the final restart, the screen remained grey and 10.5.4 did not boot from the external drive.
I restarted the machine holding down the ALT (option) key, and only two options appeared, Macintosh HD and the Install DVD. I selected the Macintosh HD and opened System Preferences.
In System Preferences --> Startup Disk, I discovered the partition on my external HD which contains 10.5.4. I selected this partition and selected restart.
On restart my MBP displayed a grey screen, and the blue light on my hard drive flashed slowly. I left this for an hour, however; the OS did not start and the screen remained grey.
I then plugged my external HD into my new MBP which I started holding down the ALT key.
To my surprise I found 3 boot options (Macintosh HD, Windows and Leopard). Leopard being the partition on my external drive, which now has 10.5.4 installed.
I selected Leopard, but sadly after 30 minutes, the OS failed to boot.
Although this deviates slightly from this post, I fail to understand the problem here:
1 – Why can’t I boot 10.5.4 on an external drive, from my old MBP? Surely this is not because my old MBP is now running 10.5.7?
2 – Why can I see 10.5.4 as a boot option on my new MBP but not on my old MBP when I start the MBP holding down the ALT key?
I doubt there is a problem with my external drive, as it seems to read, write, etc... in all normal cases.
Whilst it definitely appears that I won’t be able to boot 10.5.4 on an external drive from my new MBP, I should be able to at least boot it from my old MBP, which would give me the option of installing Snow Leopard and Windows on the internal drive of my old MBP.
Apologies for keeping this post going, but I hope by getting to the bottom of this, it will help other Mac users as well.
I’ve run out of ideas of things to try, so I will give Apple Care another call in the morning, and will report back.
Any suggestions of other things I can try?
    Cheers

  • MBP running Leopard 10.5.3 and W XP  with freezing problems

    Hello everyone
Im running Leopard 10.5.3 and bootcamp 2.1 on my MBP. I am able to run xp pro only once in a blue moon. Ever since I started using bootcamp with windows xp sp2 the computer freezes up. I always have to reboot the computer in order to use the windows side of my mac. I dont know what the problem is. I decided to upgrade to version 10.5.3 and bootcamp 2.1 to see if the freezing problem goes away and it did not help.
95% of the times the computer freezes when Im using it, or when I start boot camp. I only use windows to play games and use some military software since Im a soldier in the army. Im currently deploy to Iraq and not very knowledge in computers. I have reinstalled the apple drivers with the leopard cd because the keyboard was not working properly and it worked fine for a few minutes and then it decided to crash again. It happens very regularly, sometimes Im playing a game for hours and hours and it work great, without problems. Im really lost here. I have read the post about this problem but they really gives me no solution to my problem.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I have 10.5.3 on an external, and a 410 that I use as a backup device. After reading this post I thought I'd check it for myself. Installed the 1.8.3-6BETA, and fired it up. Everything worked, I had inputs and outputs, even recorded a little something just to test. Started playing some itunes, and about 10 minutes in, the 410 dropped out. I've tried restarting the computer and device several times, and even though the 410 shows up in my sys prefs and Logic prefs, I can't get any ins or outs out of it, and the 410 interface shows now activity on any of the channels.
    Bee Jay -
I'm going to try this tomorrow, but here's a thought.....the 1.8.3-8 says in the release notes that it has new firmware for the device. I know you're using the previous beta driver, but is it possible that if you installed the -8 driver and then downgraded to the -6BETA, that the device has retained the firmware from the -8 release, which is working with the previous BETA release and 10.5.3?
Dunno....just a thought. I was SO excited to finally get Leopard onto my internal, but now it looks like I'll have to wait a bit more. Bummer!
