Connect Mac Mini 2011 to iMac 2010 via MiniDisplay Port?

Thought I read somewhere that a Mac mini could be connected to a 27" iMac for display purposes. I have the 27" iMac from 2010 and it has the minidisplay port. I'm considering getting the new Mac Mini. Can the two be connected so that the iMac display also functions as a display for the Mac mini?

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved.
Step 1
Restart the router. Many problems are solved that way.
Step 2
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
Step 3
Run the Network Diagnostics assistant.
Step 4
Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.

You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:

Step 6
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
Step 7
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

When I connect my Mac Mini 2011 with Lion to a TV via HDMI and an earphone cable is plugged in, it´s not possible to choose sound out via hdmi, as opposed to connection via minidisplay port. Anybody knows how to fix this?

Was just on the phone with Apple about this.
The solution was as follows for me anyway...
Go to your Finder
Choose the Go Menu
Choose Computer
Choose your Macintosh Hard Drive
Choose your "Library" Folder
Choose the "Preferences" Folder
There should be a folder called "Audio"
Move that whole folder to the trash
Empty the Trash
Restart from the Apple Menu
When you are back up and running;
     Choose System Preferences from the Apple Menu
     Choose Sound
      In the output tab you should now be able to make the HDMI "Sticky"
      Enjoy your sound over HDMI and no more dirty knees or broken backs unplugging the desktop speakers!

Target Display Mode iMac 27 mid 2011 with Mac Mini 2011 bootcamp

I can't seem to use Target Display Mode with Bootcamp.
My configuration:
Imac 27" mid 2011 with osx 10.8.4
Mac Mini Server 2011 with osx 10.8.4, bootcamp 5 and Windows7
Both are connected via Apple genuine Thunderbolt cable (2m).
When I boot the Mac Mini into OSX then Target Display Mode works perfectly and I can see the osx installed on the Mac Mini on the iMac display.
However, when I reboot the Mac Mini into Bootcamp (windows7 x64) I can't put the iMac in Targt Display Mode and get to see Windows 7 on my iMac screen.

The following article says that this should work, however once I reboot osx on the Mac Mini the iMac leaves Target Display Mode immediatly and will not return to Target Display Mode.
Any advice? I contacted Apple Support and a Sr. Enginner said it should be supported and he's checking with a higher tier.

I purchased Thunderbolt display with Mac mini 2011. I experienced a lot of graphic issues with Mac mini when I connected to Thunderbolt display. I exchanged Mac mini 3 times but the same result. The Thunderbolt display is working fine with MacBook Pro 2011.
I'm going to return both Thunderbolt display and Mac mini and interested to get iMac. Is there any differences between iMac and Thunderbolt display + Mac mini 2011? i.e., in technology, release update cycle, features etc? My main intention to buy Thunderbolt display is to use with both Mini and MacBook Pro.
Any further help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I don't know why you are surprised at the similar sizes of the 27-inch iMac, the 27-inch Cinema Display, and the 27-inch Thunderbolt display. The 27-inch iMac came first, and the others are "monitor-only" products that seem to use the same LCD panel(s).
As to a current 27-inch iMac vs. a current 27-inch Thunderbolt display,
* The iMac serves as a standalone computer, and can also serve as a dumb monitor for an external computer that has a Thunderbolt port. When operating as a dumb monitor, the iMac only serves as a monitor; it does not offer breakout connections to USB 2.0, Firewire 800, or Gigabit Ethernet.
* The Thunderbolt display is a dumb monitor for an external computer that has a Thunderbolt port. I originally set up my mini with the included HDMI -> DVI adaptor to connect to a Sycmaster monitor. The graphics were very good.

If the Mac mini and iMac have got FireWire or Thunderbolt (probably, FireWire 800), just buy a FireWire cable and start the Mac mini holding the T key while your Mac is starting. Doing this, your Mac mini's hard drive will show up as an external drive in the iMac, so you can store data in it. You may want to format the hard drive first.
This isn't the best way. If you aren't going to use the Mac mini, you can take the hard disk out of it, buy an enclosure, install the hard drive in it and connect it to your iMac. Then, format the hard drive > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Finally, open Finder and you will see the hard drive in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices"

You are going to have to buy an external modem. They make ones that plug into the USB. Apple does not make one so you will have to buy a 3rd party modem. I would read the reviews before making the purchase to make sure you buy one that someone has tested with a mac.

New mac mini 2011 windows 7 won't connect wireless in bootcamp

When I boot into win 7 everything is fine apart from I have no wireless connection looked everywhere in setting but cannot find any way of doing it,wireless works fine in lion,I currently connect mac mini by wireless,Ethernet is not possible at this time as to far way,any body point me in right direction.
Also another prob I have is since installing bootcamp whenever I boot the mac it always boots in windows 7 how do I make it boot into lion first thanks.

The BootCamp Drivers have to be downloaded from inside the BootCamp Assistant (called "Windows Support Software").
Reboot into OSX and then go to System Preferences then Startup Volume and set your OSX to be the default.

Real Life Mac Mini Performance vs iMac

Hi Guys,
I'm about to purchase my first Mac Mini, and I have question about Mac Mini's performance. How is base Mac Mini compare against iMac 21.5 (i5 2400s) Base? I understand that iMac uses i5 2400s, desktop CPU, and benchmark number is obivously whole miles ahead of Mac Mini base.
My primary use for Mac would be day to day computing with some Adobe web creative tools like Photoshop, In Design, Dreamweaver for checking web/graphic desinger's work. I plan to study iPhone app development for fun, so some Xcode .
I already have good 24 inch monitor,bluetooth keyboard and magic mouse from my last macbook pro setup. Price difference between iMac and Mac Mini is about $500.
In real life usage, with Memory upgraded 8gig, how much of difference would I notice? Will iMac Base have significantly better performance ($500 difference)?
Another quesiton is if I add SDD, will it void the warranty? I understand that swapping HDD is okay, but I read somewhere saying that adding another HDD would actually void warranty....

I am an electrical engineer and do a lot of embedded firmware design
and supporting software, mostly in Win8.1 virtual machine with Parallels.
I also do a lot with Photoshop CS6 and some video work.
When confronted with an upgrade decision, I ended up going with the 27" iMac
and was glad I did. Expanded it to the full 32GB and am using an SSD via Thunderbolt,
I already had a Thunderbolt display, so I ended up with a very good workstation setup.
With that 32GB of RAM, I am able to have OS X, a Win8.1 coding/debug virtual machine,
and a Win7 software test platform all running at the same time and no noticable
performance hit.
Also, if developing large firmware/software, SSDs will speed the work up dramatically
as these types of projects are quite file intensive. The last project I was working on,
I could build, download and start debugging an embedded app using Win8.1 on a VM
before my coworkers were half way through building the app on their native Win laptops/desktops
which had standard had drives.
With that said, I still have 2 Minis in service. My 2011 Mini Server (my former workstation) was
repurposed to be my HTPC and my 2010 Mini has been re-assigned as my home iTunes/file server.

Mac Mini 2011 screen blacks out during heavy screen activity

I have a Mac Mini 2011 i5 2.3Ghz with Intel HD video. It's connected to a 30" LCD 2560x1600 (Dell WFP3008) via mini-DP to DP cable and a 22" LCD 1920x1080 (Samsung LCD TV) via HDMI to HDMI cable.
For the first few weeks I had it connected to the 30" only and it was fine. Then I hooked up the Samsung as a second display and the problems started.
The problem is that the Dell blacks out briefly, then comes back. It is not "drawing" the screen black, the signal to the Dell gets disrupted momentarily so the monitor has no signal so it goes black. Then it resyncs with the signal and the display is back. This only happens to the Dell, during the disruption, the Samsung image stays put. I know it is a signal disruption because the Dell shows a displayport icon showing that it has just resynced to that input.
The problem happens more frequently when more things are going on; like if I have a window or multiple windows playing video, then the disruption happens more. If I disconnect the Samsung, it happens less. It could even happen if a web browser window taking up a large portion of the 30" screen does a full page update, it will disrupt. If I am running Adobe Lightroom, it seems to happen more also.
When it happens it seems like messages like this appear in the console, although i can't say they are directly correlated:

I'm thinking perhaps the mini is running low on memory since the 2560x1600 is pretty high res and then add the 1080p screen and stuff being updated, perhaps it runs out of memory and disrupts the signal while it garbage collects? Pure speculation.
Has anybody else seen this and have any clues on how to resolve it? Thanks.

I should clarify that when I say perhaps the mini is running low on memory, I mean low on shared video memory, since the computer has 16GB installed. I'm not sure how to view or test shared video memory allocation.

I am trying to set up a mac mini with my iMac. My end goal is to share files between the two and use my iMac 27" screen for the iMac and the mac mini.

AirDrop will let you share files with very little configuration on your part. As long as the two machines are on the same network, you're just about ready.
As for sharing a display, the 27" model used to support Display input via DisplayPort, which used to be a matter of buying a cable and connecting one to the other. I'm not sure if that feature has come over now that they've switched from DisplayPort to Thunderbolt.
You could also use Screen Sharing to view the mini's desktop from the iMac...again, as long as the two computers are on the same network (and you've configured Screen Sharing on the mini) it should work. Good luck!
