Connect mac to internet via wireless airport

I have AT&T wireless, using NetGear Modem. My Mac Book drops a wireless connection when I am 2 feet away from the modem. Why? I need to be able to move from room to room and this is so frustrating.

For your WEP encryption, are you using a passphrase
or a hex key on the Linksys? If using a passphrase,
Macs have a "hard" time with these. If you prefer
WEP, I suggest that you use a 128-bit Hex key
instead. Better yet, switch to WPA.
I think that it is a hex key. I do have a password to access the wireless connection. If I switch to WPA, should I switich to WPA-personal, ot does it really matter which WPA it is? Thanks

  • Why can't I no longer connect to the Internet via my AirPort Extreme Base?

I suddenly can no longer connect to the Internet through my AirPort Extreme. Everything was fine until this morning. My Base Station is connected to a DSL modem and then my computer connects to the Internet wirelessly through the Base Station. The center light is on in the Base Station. The left light flickers telling me there is wireless activity. I can still access my printer through the Base Station. But the right light is no longer flickering. I have rebooted everything several times. Does anyone have insight into this problem. This is the second time this has happened. For over a month I could not access the Internet through the Base Station, and then suddenly and arbitrarily it started working again. This morning it just stopped again.

I've had the same problem - mine started after I upgraded to 10.4.8 on my MacBook a week or so ago.
I can see other networks around my home and when I travel, but can only connect via ethernet cable (and my ISP is comcast - I thought the upgrade was supposed to help make connecting with comcast better).
My G3 has no problem connecting, so I don't think it's exactly a problem with my modem, or base station, or even comcast. I think it has something to do with my base station and upgrading to 10.4.8. Btw, dropping back to 10.4.6 hasn't helped.

  • ITunes content not visible when connected to internet via wireless

I have been having problems with my Apple TV. It did not show any iTunes Store content. After some considerable attempts at reconfiguration, I finally restored to factory settings and I still could not connect to the internet via my airport extreme wireless network. I therefore ran an ethernet cable instead and all the itunes store content appeared and I was able to sync with my Macbook Pro. I then looked at the network configeration using the ethernet recorded the settings and took the cable out. Then reconnected using the wireless connection, initally it could not connect to the internet but then I went through the manual connection and set the settings using DCHP and it then connected but once again there is no iTunes store content, if I reconnect the iTune store content comes back as does the uTube and internet radio both of which also disappear if I try and go wireless. Any thoughts?

are you connecting to the same router for the ethernet and wireless connections?

  • Cannot connect to internet using wireless airport on my iMAC

I am running Leopard on my iMac and less than a week ago I was able to connect to the internet by wireless airport express. Now it says that my airport is working and connected but when I open Safari, I only get a partial url load and then it freezes and eventually after about 3-5 minutes it gives me a "You are not connected to the internet". I recently installed updates and I believe that after that is when it stopped working. After hours of troubleshooting research on the internet, I've tried creating a new network, editing the location from Automatic to a new one, simply shutting down and unplugging for a couple of minutes and plugging back in and rebooting for example and nothing has worked. Does anybody have any thoughts that could help me get back up and running again?
    Thanks!

Even though your profile does NOT show you updated to 10.5.2 I suspect you did by the way you are talking. The problem with 10.5.2 is in an extension file ( which is really a folder ) it is the root to the wi-fi problems. I will be posting a fix 1-2 days. In the mean time you should download a program called Pacifist Vers. 2.5.2. The trial version will work but I suggest you pay the $20 shareware because he earn it and if my feelings are correct about Apple you will need it again.

  • Can't connect to internet via wireless

I am unable to connect to the internet via wireless on a consistent basis I can ping my router every time though. When the internet works it seems to be completely random. I tried some fixes posted on the forums for problems similar to mine like, setting my default gateway and using open dns servers, but neither of those fixes seemed to help with my set up. Any ideas?
My wireless card uses the Ralink rt 2760 chipset. Thanks

What are the characteristics of the wireless networks to which you are trying to connect?
    Are they managed or ad-hoc?
    Are they WEP?
    Are they WPA?
If the link is encrypted but the NIC isn't, the NIC will associate with the network and a ping will work, but any packet containing actual data (like a DHCP request, any TCP or UDP request, SNMP, etc... ) will fail.
As a quick test, if you have administrative rights to your access point, turn off WEP and WPA and see if you can connect.  I advise you turn encryption back on when you are done with the experiment.

  • Hi my airport router ( ateast i think this is where the problem originates) has been turning off intermittenly for the past week, when it does this NO devices recieve internet connection, mac, pc,iphone, ipad, wireless or hardwired directly to the router

Hi my airport router ( ateast i think this is where the problem originates) has been turning off intermittenly for the past week, when it does this NO devices recieve internet connection, mac, pc,iphone, ipad, wireless or hardwired directly to the router. However they all show to be connected with their corresponding bars and the ip's are all fine. Earlier today it started flucuating on and off about every 5 min making work impossible and now it seems to be completely broken (im currently on my iphone connected though its own internet) Does anyone know how or ehy this happened and how i can fix this? And to know if this originates from the router or something else entirely. Thank you!

Hi - some clarifications would help narrow down some symptoms - just what has been turning off? - has the light been solid green but the modem isn't providing wi-fi? - or is the light flashing yellow with no internet? - which can mean several things - does the light go out completey? - so if you can report on exactly what is happenening and when, maybe someone can help you - we also need to know if there any error messages along the way -  we also need the types of devices involved and how they are attached - kind of like a nework map  - the more info that you provide, the more answers you will get.

Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Also, turn off IPv6:
    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
    Or whatever Interface you use.

  • Problem Connecting iBook to Internet via Airport

I just bought a used 14" G3 iBook 700MHz w/ Airport card and can't get it to connect to the internet via my home wireless network. The home network has no problems connecting w/ our MacBook, 12" PowerBook and 13" G3 iBook via Airport. My wireless router is a D-Link DI-624M. The new (used) iBook had no problems connecting to the wireless network at our nearby Apple Store and connects to the internet correctly when I plug the ethernet cable directly out of the cable modem into the computer. The iBook apparently has no problem connecting to the wireless network in our house (full signal shown in the menu bar and, when doing the Network Diagnostic process, it shows that the Airport connection is good). But I keep getting the error message in Safari: "You are not connected to the internet." Any suggestions?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions
Does it have this problem at exactly the same time your other computers are connected?
The only time I get that message is when our ISP is having problems or the modem needs to be reset.
Apple's tips for connecting wirelessly can be found here:

  • Help, I cannot connect to the internet via airport with either my Imac or I-Pad.  Connecting via ethernet works okay for Imac.  I can connect wirelesssly with my windows laptop.  I have reset my router, created a new network. It was all okay on Monday

Normally I have my IMac, I-Pad and Windows Laptop all working on my home network via wi-fi. This week I find that I cannot access the inetrnet on my IMac or I-pad via wi-fi but I can connect to the internet via wi-fi with my windows based laptop.
The airport diagnostics (reds/yellows) indcate that I am connected
I can access the internet if I plug my IMac into the router via an ethernet cable
I have restarted the IMac and the I-Pad, rebooted the router and created a new network.  None of these changes has made a difference.  Does anyone have any ideas please?

The wireless cellular device would need to have an Ethernet port, to provide an Ethernet signal to the Time Capsule's WAN port.

  • PowerMac G4 will not connect to the internet via ethernet

I am normally a very mac savy person, but I cannot get this to work...
I have an Airport Express connected to speakers, a USB printer and an ethernet hub, which is connected to a cable modem and also a PowerMac G4 via ethernet. There is also a wireless iMac thrown into the mix. All hardware has up-to-date software.
The wireless iMac gets online, prints and plays music wirelessly.
The wired PowerMac G4 will not connect to the internet via ethernet, it is killing me.
I have gone through all the settings and cannot figure this one out. I really appreciate all advice.
    Thanks,

  • How on earth could I be connecting to the Internet through my airport express when it is not connected to anything?

I'm not entirely displeased with the situation but I cannot see how I could be connecting to the Internet through my airport express when the Airport is not connected to anything.
    Weird huh?
I have a separate non- Airport wireless network connected to the Internet.  I had previously set-up the Airport to link with this network but disconnected it (by resetting it) as music streaming was unlistenable due to frequent drop out.  I now just have the Airport Express as a standalone wireless network only connecting to the stereo to stream music from devices.
My devices are only connected to the Airport network with cellular data off. Yet I can still connect to the Internet AND listen to streaming music (without drop-out no less).
I don't want to fix it but I would like to know how the frag it could happen so i don't screw it up accidentally.

I would say you still have something of the previous setup.
To be sure you don't mess up, save the configuration.. go to the top menu area of the airport utility and export configuration.. which will land on your computer.
Now you can recover at anytime to the current setup.
How it works.. that is magical ..
Open the airport utility.. edit.. and take a screenshot and post it of the following pages..
    Internet wireless network
THen we can tell you how it is working.

    Hello Rattisate,
Sorry to hear you are not able to connect to Wi-Fi on your MacBook Pro.  I would be concerned about this too.  You can find information on how to troubleshoot this in the following article:
Troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues in OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4628
Follow the steps in the section labeled, "Symptom: My Mac does not connect to the Internet."
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

  • Macbook Pro suddenly will not connect to the internet via ethernet cable.

I know this is a long shot... but I figured I would give it a try.
My macbook pro suddenly does not connect to the internet via ethernet cable. Please bear with me, as I am not very tech-savvy - I will try my best to describe the symptoms!
I connect to the internet via ethernet (we don't have wifi). It was working before I went to work, and when I came home I suddenly couldn't get anything to work (I know everyone says this, but I truly didn't mess with anything). Internet browsers just think for awhile and then turn up the 'You are not connected to the internet' error.
I went into my network preferences and curiously, the 'Ethernet' shows a green dot and says 'connected'. However it says 'Authentication server is not responding' underneath the last part that says '802.1X: WPA: eduroam' (I think that is my user profile).
When I go into my 'security' settings I can see that my firewall is off, so that shouldn't be causing any problems.
I've tried restarting the router and computer itself many times. Diagnostics just gets to a certain point and reports back 'Network Diagnostics cannot fix the current networking problems.' I've also tried switching to a different ethernet cable, and I tried both cables out on a PC laptop and it connected without issue.  Additionally, I brought my macbook along to a friend's house and it connected to his wifi just fine, so the problem appears to just be with ethernet connections.
I know it's hard to troubleshoot this kind of thing without being there and having a look at the computer yourself, but any tips wouild be greatly appreciated.

As I mentioned above, I am not very tech savvy so I have no idea why a wireless protocol would be showing up there, I'm just listing everything I see in hopes that someone might know something I can try. This is why I am asking for help here - I'm not sure what has happened that has made me unable to connect, especially since it seemingly occured while nobody was using the computer.
I guess I should clarify that I'm not a total hillbilly- normally my firewall is set to 'on', but I set it to 'off' to try and troubleshoot the issues here as I was told that sometimes it can interfere with the computer's ability to connect to the internet. If this is not the case and firewall does not affect anything, I will turn it back on while I try to fix this.
I have tried the method you mentioned above a few times - I actually contacted my ISP earlier this week and they recommended resetting the router like that. They didn't mention any known network issues.
