Connect macbook to an imac

So we are using our iMac as our main computer that we connect multiple computers to in order to use files back and forth. It is limiting us to a maximum of 10 people that can connect to the main computer though, is there any way to increase that limit?

You can install the server version of OS X on the iMac, that may help. Your profile indicates the iMac is on 10.7.1, so you would need to purchase and update to 10.7.5 Server version. While you are at it I'd recommend upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 Server version, much easier upgrade than Lion which isn't easily available any longer.

  • Trying to connect Macbook Pro and IMac...suggestions?

Trying to connect Macbook Pro and IMac with Apple Remote desktop or a cable.  They do share a wifi router.
    Thanks much!

not sure if you found an answer to this.  I just got a mb pro and want it to connect to my imac (late 2009).  I set up sharing on hte imac, file sharing and dvd/cd sharing.  from the mbpro i simply went to finder>go>connect to server.  I entered the name as on my imac (xxx.local) and immediately connected.  This was a massive help to me as I had some software (aperture, office for mac) that were on drive and the new mbpro doesn't have a disk drive.  through sharing I could access the disc drive remotely via my mbpro and load the software that way.  worked beautifully on my wifi (which is apple airport extreme).
    Hope this helps.

  • Connecting Macbook to new iMac

I recently bought the 24 inch iMac because my Macbook (purchased April 2006) is slow, unresponsive and has a broken optical drive. I have all of my recent photographs on my Macbook and would like to transfer them to my new iMac using a brand new Firewire 800 9-6 pin cable. My macbook is in working condition and this should work.. however my Macbook in FW mode isn't showing up on my iMac! Help!

That should be working. Try restarting the iMac with the MacBook connected in target mode. Also, if you run Disk Utility, does the MacBook's drive appear in the sidebar?
If you have never used that new cable for anything else, it is possible the cable is bad. It is also possible one of the FireWire ports is faulty. Do you have any FireWire 400 device? If so, use that cable to connect it to the iMac's FireWire 800 port, as a test. That will test the iMac's port and the cable. Also try connecting it to the MacBook with a normal cable, to make sure that port is working.
You can also connect the two Macs using +File Sharing+ over the network. Using an Ethernet cable to directly connect the two Macs will be faster than using wireless (as long as you use a Cat-5e or better cable). Just turn on +File Sharing+ in System Preferences Sharing pane on the MacBook. On the iMac, the MacBook should appear in the sidebar of any Finder window. Select it and click on the +Connect As+ button over to the right. Provide a username and password for an user account (on the MacBook).

  • Connecting MacBook (2007) to iMac (2012)?

    Hi!
I have a broken old MacBook from 2007, i have a files on this which I would like to transfer to my reasonably new iMac which I brought in 2012.
My question(s) is what cable would I need to transfer data from my old Macbook to my iMac, would I also need a thunderbolt adapter?
    Thanks for anyone's help.

The easiest way is file sharing via ethernet(System preferences > Sharing > File Sharing), though if MacBook doesn't work, take out the HDD from MacBook then put it into external 2.5 inch HDD enclosure and connect it to iMac.

  • When connecting Macbook Air to iMac, have to keep Macbook Air open in order to use the iMac as a display.

When I connect my Macbook Air to my iMac with Thunderbolt, I have to keep my Macbook Air open or else the iMac does not sense it. I've tried closing it to just use the iMac as the display, but then the iMac goes back to its regular screen. Also, I have to control everything from the MBA keyboard and touchpad- my iMac mouse and keyboard suddenly won't work. How do I fix this?

    Hi there,
Apple outline the steps to do so in the link I've posted below. If you need help with any of them, just shout.

  • Connecting Macbook to Imac

I am trying to connect my MacBook to my IMac, for file sharing. My Imac can connect to my MacBook fine, and MacBook sees the IMac in Finder, It just will not connect. I keep getting a error
    Connection Failed
The Server "....IMac" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check server name or IP address, check you network connection, and try again.
I have checked and all file sharing is turned on for both computers.

Go to the "Sharing" pane in System Preferences, click on file sharing, then find the AFP address (it would be something like this: afp://10.0.0.129). Once you have found that, go into Finder, select "Connect to Server…" under "Go", then type in the address you found earlier. Does it work, and if not, what does the error message say?

  • AE ppoe mode in AE only allows macbook pro and iMac to connect to internet but not ipad

I just upgraded to  20MB DSL line and got a new Qwest Q1000 modem connected to an A Extreme.
Since Qwest now has PPPoE, I set the Q1000 modem to bridge mode and turned off Wifi.
Then I Set the AEx router to ppoe mode, entered my username and password from Qwest and all is well with all lights green.
But... only my imac and macbook pro connect to the internet.  My ipad, my wife's macbook and an ipod touch cannot connect.
According the Airport Utility, all these devices are detected by the wifi network and they have their own  unique IPs provided by the AEx router (in pppoe mode)   10.0.1.7,   10.0.1.9 and so forth, no ip conflicts detected, all the lights green with full access to the internet. Again, only  my iMac and my macbook pro actually connect to the internet at full speed.
Does any one know why some devices connect to the internet while others are not able to...
Again, no errors detected anywhere, all modem and router lights green.
    Any help is welcomed.
    Janickk

Thanks for the reply.  Your suggestion did not work.  Apparently there is an issue with DNS addresses.
The Airport Extreme in pppoe mode  sets the router and DNS addresses to be the same 10.0.1.1.  Some devices (like my macbook pro and iMac) ignore this DNS value or use a different  (unknown) and then they connect to the internet perfectly.  But the devices (ipads and ipods) aquire and set both values (Router and DNS) to be the same, (10.0.1.1 and 10,0.1.1) wont connect to the internet until I manually  changed the DNS address in the DNS field.
Question: are these two values supposed to be the same/different/ in both fields in the AExt in pppoe mode?
    Thanks

  • Beginner question: Can I create a hybrid home network between an ethernet-connected iMac and an airport connected Macbook Pro using a hybrid router?

I recently acquired an friend's used iMac, I don't know anything about networks and all I can find is how to create a Wi-Fi home network but nothing about hybrid Ethernet/Wi-Fi networks.
I have the iMac connected via Ethernet to the wireless router.
I connect via Airport with my MacBook Pro
I would appreciate if anyone has any pointers as to how I can start setting up a network between my ethernet-connected iMac and WiFi connected Macbook.
    Thanks!

ethernet and airport/WiFi are just transmission media for the same network. If you can get internet on both computers, they are networked. Using the same router = same network.
So now, what is it you want to do? Share files between them?

  • Unable to connect MacBook to iMac

    Hi.
I have an iMac and a MacBook and up until recently I was able to mount the iMac's HD as a volume on the MacBook so that I could move some files between the two machines.
Now, however, it doesn't happen. I click on Finder's Network and select my iMac as normal. But when I enter my password and click OK it looks like everthing has happened as it should bit the mounted drive is just not visible on the desktop or in Finder.
When I try to mount the iMac drive again the volume is ghosted.
I have checked Finder's preferences and have ensured the the Connected Servers option is ticked in both General and Sidebar.
I can mount my MacBook's HD as normal on my MacBook so I can still move the files around. Can anyone help me see my iMac's HD from my MacBook again?
    iMac Intel CD 17", 1.83, 1GB RAM, 250GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    OK...
I now think it's something to do with my Home folder on my iMac.
When using my iMac I have still have access to my Home folder through my Finder sidebar, but when I navigate to iMac > Users > my home folder is not visible.
When connecting from the MacBook the following are availabe:
    My iMac
    My Home Folder
    My connected iPod
I can access both the iMac and iPod but not my home folder. When I'm connected via iMac I cannot see my iMac's home folder in the Users folder.
    Any ideas?

Change your settings in Sharing preferences, for one, and remove the server out of the Finder's sidebar. Obviously, this is the result of transfering all your other computer's preferences to your new computer.

  • MacBook Pro and iMac keep losing wireless internet connection.

Greetings all, two weeks ago I purchashed a MacBook Pro and iMac and they've worked fine, except for the internet. The wireless randomly goes out, but the airport bars remain. At first I thought it was just pages having trouble loading because of the OS (stupid I know) It's been happening more and more frequently and the only way to solve it is to turn the Airport off and then on which allows the internet to reconnect. My wireless router is connected to an HP an the router is a Dlink 1310 wireless G router. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi all,
It seems I am not alone. There is a very strange problem either with my brand new unibody MacBookPro 17" or the Airport Extreme I am using to connect to the Internet via a cable connected router. The router I am using is Billion 7300 and works fine, and I can even connect to the wireless access via the router and all works fine. I am using Airport Extreme to extend the access area in my house and also use a USB drive for storage attached to the AirportExtreme. The funny thing is that the first couple of weeks I had no problems with the MacBookPro going on the Internet via the Airport. At that time I had the wireless part of the Billion modem disabled so as to avoid possible interference. Suddenly, one day about a week or so ago, the MBP would connect first time to the wireless Airport and to the Internet for only about a few seconds and then no update on any of the web pages. I was suspecting first my ADSL, but that was all along OK. The signal strength to the Airport is strong, but just the connection to the Internet is no longer available. Strange thing is I have in the same room a 24" iMac and this is still connected to the Internet via the Airport with no problems. Same settings on both! I tried everything I could think off on the Airport, tweaked, changed, reset and created new connection - but without any luck. It is as if the Airport decided to just block the MBP for whatever reason. I also have the Little Snitch, which I disabled too.
I was hoping that the latest Leopard 10.5.7 would have a fix for such a behaviour, but no change.
I cannot make any conclusion as everything contradicts: if the MBP wireless has a problem, I wouldn't be able to connect to the Billion wireless; if the Airport is at fault I should not be able to connect to it with the iMac. I go to work where other two brands of wireless hot-spots I use (D-Link and Billion 7402) and I have no problems swicthing between the two. It seems only Apple's Airport is a problem for my new MBP.
It must be something in the software of the Airport or MBP ?!?!?
APPLE, PLEASE HELP, THIS IS ANNOYING.
I already spent three days trying to solve a problem that should be 'No Brainer" according to the Apple's design books. But I do have a problem that I did not know about before.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

  • MacBook Air to iMac Target Display Mode not working

I would like to connect my MacBook Air (13") with my iMac (27") to use the latter as an external display with Target Display Mode.
I followed instructions from a number of posts (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14264), and connected the two with thunderbolt cable and hit Command-F2 -- the iMac goes black and MacBook stays the same. One post suggested dragging windows over to the iMac as an extended display, and I was able to drag Safari totally off-screen, presumably onto the other display, but the iMac still appeared black
Other issue is that hitting Command-F2 again doesn't do anything. I could only get the iMac out of TDM when I unplugged the thunderbolt cord.
I have a brand new Macbook Air and iMac along with new thunderbolt cable (all purchased at Apple Store in 2014). Would appreciate any help, thanks!

    Additional twist to this...
Tried to troubleshoot and reset the System Management Controller (SMC) per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
When I hit Command-F2, one window from my MacBook will display on the iMac (it was Safari a few times, Outlook once), but neither keyboard/mouse can DO anything in that screen. That window also disappears from the MacBook. And I can only return after unplugging thunderbolt (not command-F2).
    Help please
