Connect Macbook to external monitor

Hello,
I am currently using this macbook without an external monitor. However, I find it more and more unpleasant working with a small at home. So I have bought a Mini-Display-Port to HDMI Adapter and a HDMI-cable to connect the macbook to my Samsung 16:9 full-hd monitor.
The problem: on my monitor I don't see a full screen display of what's happening on my macbook. So there I giant black rectangles around the display. Also, the display on my monitor is rather blurry and looks totally different from what I am seeing on my macbook.
Does anyone know how I can solve this problem? I would really want to be able to work on a bigger screen, 24'', instead of photoshopping and stuff on a 13'' screen every day.
Thanks!
Thomas

Apple's MacBook lines includes a form of digital copy protection that will prevent protected media, such as DRM-infused iTunes movies, from playing back on devices that aren't compliant with the new priority protection measures.
The Intel-developed technology is called High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) and aims to prevent copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across a variety of display connectors, even if such copying is not in violation of fair use laws.
Among the connectors supported by the technology are the Mini DisplayPort found on Apple's latest MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air, in addition to others such as Digital Visual Interface (DVI), High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), Gigabit Video Interface (GVIF), and Unified Display Interface (UDI).
Apple has apparently acquired a license for the technology and is now using it across its DisplayPort-enabled MacBook lines to to prevent transmission of purchased iTunes content (and some DVDs) to devices that don't include support for HDCP.

when i close my macbook pro whilst it is connected to an external monitor the internet connection slows down, does any body know how to fix it ?

A quote from the attached article:
Certain external monitors and LCD displays: Certain displays may emit harmonic interference, especially in the 2.4GHz band between channels 11 and 14. This interference may be at its worst if you have a portable computer with the lid closed and an external monitor connected to it. Try changing your access point to use 5 Ghz or a lower 2.4 GHz channel.

My almost-new Macbook Pro 15-inch with retina display goes black and shuts down sometimes when connected to my external monitor. (The first time it did this was when connected to a projector.) They have replaced the motherboard but it still happens sometimes. The computer and monitor both come back on after a few seconds.

  • Connect MBP to external monitor without putting it to sleep mode closed

    Hi,
You must be wondering what I mean.
I want to connect my MBP mid 2010 to a external monitor. (Already done that)
    My problem is:
I`m now using my MBP on my external monitor. But, the laptop is open beside the monitor (which is kinda annoying for me) . every time I close the MBP, the laptop automatically puts to sleep, which is normal right? what I want is, using my macbook on external monitor while the macbook is closed and not in sleep mode. Is that possible? Dont know if you understand what I mean, I`m not that good in english.
    :P

Hey! Everyone! If you don`t understand what I mean, (I know that I`M ***** at english) feel free to say "I Don`t understand what you mean! you F*cking IDiot!"...

  • Can MBA connect to 2 external monitors?

I have been using a dual-display graphics card in a PC for some time, with 2 monitors connected to make a large working area. Is it possible to do this with the MBA? Is the mini displayport to DVI compatible with dual-display? So far, I have been able to successfully use the MBA with lid closed connected with one external monitor. Cheers!

My impression is that the dual-display adaptor may work with one of those Y DVI splitters for dual-monitor cards. But is anyone certain about this?

  • Is there anyway to have an 11 inch mac air connected to an external monitor with lid closed and still be able to see content. I have a wireless ketboard and mouse and have tried everything. Only works when plugged in.

You are referring to a feature called Clamshell Mode, please read Clamshell Mode setup for instructions.
BTW when posting when you use generalities such as "have tried everything" this tells us nothing. When posting please be specific and try to paint a complete picture. It just makes things easier for those trying to help you.

  • With YP2 I cannot listen to music when connected to an external monitor

I am using the hdmi connection for my external monitor and when connected I cannot get any sound from my YP2. It works just fine when connected to a TV so I am assuming the sound signal has to be amplfied by the tv or receiver. A monitor typically does not have any sound amplification, I think, so my guess is this is the problem. I was hoping I could at least listen to music when earphones are plugged in, but I can't.
Another minor problem I have using the YP2 connected to my monitor is I cannot get the full resolution of the monitor, I will update this thread with the actual montior (it is an Asus 27" professional grade monitor with something like  2500x1600 resolution, I cannot remember the actual numbers) model number. The best I can get with the YP2 is around 2000x1200.

I spent quite a bit of time with Lenovo support. They got on my computer remotely, replaced the display driver, and still the same problem. It appears the problem is the resolution can only be adjusted by increments. The highest was 3200x1800 and the next lowest was 2000x1500 and then 2000x1000 (I am rounding the last two). So the computer resolution defaults to the 2000x1000 resolution when hooked up to the external monitor.
For all practical purposes this is fine. I rarely have to do any photo editing that is that critical and if I need the higher resolution I can edit with my desktop.

  • How to connect a MacBook to external monitor

I have a MacBook that I am trying to hook up a external monitor to.  I have a HDMI cable that goes from the monitor to a adaptor that goes to the mini display port and the USB port.  I have tried with and without the USB cord.  I have tried messing with the display preferences and nothing works.  I have hooked my MacBook up to my HD TV before using the same adaptor and it woks just fine.  Can someone please help me?

HDMI is kind of a flakey technology as there are several different standards. Thats why Applle never adapted it. I'd look at using a mini display to DVI adapter instead.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro External Monitor Problems

    Hi all,
Looking through some of the threads, it appears that getting macbook pros to work with an external monitors is a big issue.
I've just bought a phillips 27" monitor and I'm having no luck whatsoever getting my MBP to see it.  I've tried both HDMI and DVI using Apple's own mini adapters, but no matter I do, the monitor fails to detect any kind of signal and goes into sleep mode.
I occassionally get the blue screen flicker on my MBP as though it's trying to connect, but the monitor does nothing!!
I've tried most of the suggestions in other threads, which relate to earlier OSX versions, but nothing has helped.
    I'm running 10.8.4 on a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7.
If I fire up my Apple TV, I can use mirroring and the monitor displays my desktop no problem, but the picture quality is poor. So I guess the monitor works. I want to use a bigger screen as I use Logic Pro, so clarity is pretty essential when it comes to picture quality.
Any help would be most appreciated.
    Best Regards
    Phil

    Hello Phil,
The following article provides a number of troubleshooting steps that I'd recommend looking into, especially testing with another display if possible, and resetting the MacBook Pro's parameter RAM and SMC.

  • What is the best method to connect Gateway FPD2185W External Monitor

    Hello,
I just bought a new Macbook. I would like to connect it to my larger Gateway FPD2185W external monitor. The monitor is maybe three years old, and has VGA, component, S-Video, and DVI inputs. Which type of connection would work best? I have a mini-DVI to VGA connector from Apple, but the display doesn't look the greatest. I'm still new to using the MacBook, so help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

There are some settings on the monitor that might be affecting how it looks when running from VGA. There should be a "tuning" function, also known as clock phase adjustment. There is an AUTO button located on the side of the monitor. Press it and see if it helps the picture quality. Also under the Video Adjust menu are settings for Sharpness and Noise Reduction. Those settings can often interfere with good picture quality, so you might try playing with them as well.
Of course, you could always switch to the DVI input for the best image quality, but that would require buying another adapter from Apple and also a DVI cable if the monitor didn't already come with one.

  • Connect macbook to dell monitor

I just bought a dell monitor s2240L. When i connected my macbook pro (not retina display) to the monitor with hdmi cable, it doesnt show anything on the monitor. After they are connect with hdmi cable, the monitor went to sleep mode automaticly. I tried to download the driver from the CD it came with but it can only compatible for windows. Can anyone help me?

Does this monitor auto detect the HDMI connection, or do you need to pull up the monitor preference to get it to use the HDMI port?
Does the Mac recognize that an external monitor is connected?

  • Connecting MacBook through external display in Windows Boot Camp partition

Hello everyone! I recently installed Windows Vista Home Premium on my MacBook 320GB. My Mac Partition of the drive works perfect, and connects through Mini DVI-Video through composite cables and into my T.V. When I tried this in Windows, I had no luck whatsoever. yes, all the drivers are installed for my chipset, processor, keyboard, etc. Windows is updated as well through Microsoft, But not through the Apple Software Update because the download failed again to the Boot Camp update. How do I connect an external display(ex. Projector, T.V., anything that has composite input)? Yes, I know some of you will say, "Your first mistake was buying Vista", but thats not the problem here. Windows Vista works perfectly. When you connect an external display, it re-adjusts its screen resolution but does not appear on the external monitor. Is the Boot Camp Update the solution? Please Help!!!
That was a lot of writing!

I am using Vista on Macbook and when I connect my PC to my TV, lot of times, it hangs on me and a blue screen shows up with some errors and then it shut downs. I atleast do this 2-3 times and then finally it gets connected but there has to be a way where we can easily connect to TV without any issues. Any help guys?
Also I have noticed, my resolution on TV when I connect my macbook is 1900 x 1260 something... Is this related to resolutions?

  • Connecting a 2007 external monitor to a 2001 ibook

My new external monitor has a DVI connector and my ibook has a mini-vga port. I ordered a mini-VGA to standard-VGA cable from Apple and I ordered a DVI-to-VGA cable from Apple. However, the DVI connector has a male configuration and the monitor has a male DVI configuration. The mini-VGA plugs in nicely to the ibook but it ends in a female configuration. The DVI connector also has a female configuration on the VGA end.
Simply, Is it possible to get a cable or a combination of adaptors and cables to connect a DVI monitor plug to the mini-VGA port of my aged ibook?

fishhead, Welcome to the discussion area!
As you discovered the "DVI-to-VGA cable" from Apple isn't going to work.
To convert from VGA-to-DVI requires an active device and all of the ones I have seen cost several hundreds of dollars.
Don't be fooled by DVI-to-VGA adapters which are common and inexpensive. They won't work converting in the opposite direction.

  • Connecting Macbook Pro to Monitor

    Hi
I've got a Macbook Pro (early 2011 model) and I was wondering my options for connecting to my HPZR24w monitor. I'm not sure of the connector names, so I have taken a pic of what I have.  I've had a look on the apple store, but as I'm not 100% sure what the connectors are, if someone could point me in the right direction, that would be great.
    Many Thanks
    Wayne

Your HPZR24w has DisplayPort, DVI-D, and VGA ports (one of each). You can use any of them, but each requires different cabling.
Best bet: Buy a Mini DisplayPort male to DisplayPort male cable. Plug the Mini DisplayPort end into the Thunderbolt port on your MacBook pro (the one just below the middle of your picture, with a little lightning-like icon) and the other end into the DisplayPort port on your monitor (which is the lowest one in that picture).
Alternatively, you could buy a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter and male-to-male VGA cable to connect to the VGA port (the blue one), or a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter and male-to-male DVI-D cable to connect to the DVI-D port (the white one).

  • Poor Lightroom 4.4 performance when laptop connected to an external monitor

    Hello everyone,
I have recently purchased an external monitor JUST to be able to edit my photos at a higher resolution (1920*1080). However, Lightroom performance is extremely bad and the sliders and crop tool are all laggy when I just connect the monitor that I have bought . Doing the same task on my laptop monitor takes much less time and runs perfectly smooth (the resolution of the laptop is 1366*768).
Is this an issue with Lightroom 4.4 or is it my because my laptop is not fast enough?
Here is some more information about my system specs:
The Lightroom version is 4.4 and I have a laptop with 8 GB ram, a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 CPU, the GPU is Radeon HD 5650.
My OS is Windows 7 64 bit and the connection to the monitor is via a VGA cable
I just want to use the external monitor (single display) so I use it as a projector and I do not extend the displays. I just wanted to edit my photos with a higher resolution monitor so that I see the editing flaws in them more easily.
Please help me if you know how to deal with this because otherwise I have to return the monitor because it's of no use.

The higher resolution is pushing you to the next higher rendering resolution.  If you are in Develop and set zoom position to 1:4 or 1:8 it should speed back up (each level is 4 times as fast as tge previous).
