Connect MacBook with flatpanel iMac

Hello! I would like to connect my MacBook with my old G4 flatpanel iMac, simply for having dual monitors or using the bigger screen of the old iMac. Is this at all possible and what cable would I then need?
Thanks in advance

  • Trying to connect Macbook Pro and IMac...suggestions?

Trying to connect Macbook Pro and IMac with Apple Remote desktop or a cable.  They do share a wifi router.
    Thanks much!

not sure if you found an answer to this.  I just got a mb pro and want it to connect to my imac (late 2009).  I set up sharing on hte imac, file sharing and dvd/cd sharing.  from the mbpro i simply went to finder>go>connect to server.  I entered the name as on my imac (xxx.local) and immediately connected.  This was a massive help to me as I had some software (aperture, office for mac) that were on drive and the new mbpro doesn't have a disk drive.  through sharing I could access the disc drive remotely via my mbpro and load the software that way.  worked beautifully on my wifi (which is apple airport extreme).
    Hope this helps.

  • Syncing a Macbook with an Imac

Is there an easy way to sync a macbook with a Imac? i.e. firewire...any suggestions would be great !
    Thank you!
    Paul
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

iSync synchronizes only contact, calendaring and task data with mobile handsets and Palm devices. .Mac Syncsynchronizes only bookmarks, calendars, contacts, keychains, mailbox structures, and mail rules, signatures and smart mailboxes between two or more Macintosh desktop of portable computers using a .Mac account.
You need to consider a program like ChronoSync is you wish to replicate one environment on another machine:

  • Connecting Macbook to new iMac

I recently bought the 24 inch iMac because my Macbook (purchased April 2006) is slow, unresponsive and has a broken optical drive. I have all of my recent photographs on my Macbook and would like to transfer them to my new iMac using a brand new Firewire 800 9-6 pin cable. My macbook is in working condition and this should work.. however my Macbook in FW mode isn't showing up on my iMac! Help!

That should be working. Try restarting the iMac with the MacBook connected in target mode. Also, if you run Disk Utility, does the MacBook's drive appear in the sidebar?
If you have never used that new cable for anything else, it is possible the cable is bad. It is also possible one of the FireWire ports is faulty. Do you have any FireWire 400 device? If so, use that cable to connect it to the iMac's FireWire 800 port, as a test. That will test the iMac's port and the cable. Also try connecting it to the MacBook with a normal cable, to make sure that port is working.
You can also connect the two Macs using +File Sharing+ over the network. Using an Ethernet cable to directly connect the two Macs will be faster than using wireless (as long as you use a Cat-5e or better cable). Just turn on +File Sharing+ in System Preferences Sharing pane on the MacBook. On the iMac, the MacBook should appear in the sidebar of any Finder window. Select it and click on the +Connect As+ button over to the right. Provide a username and password for an user account (on the MacBook).

  • Syncing Macbook with an iMac desktop?

    Hello,
My husband and I are looking at purchasing a Macbook to replace his old desktop PC. The reason we're considering the Macbook is because I have an iMac desktop and want a portable Mac to take with me on the go. At the same time he wants a computer that he can hook up to his desktop monitor, and run Windows on, but that will still serve me as a portable. Kind of an all in one for the both of us. Does this sound feasible? He doesn't use my iMac, because first of all, it's just mine, and secondly I don't run windows on it and he wants Windows. I won't give up my hard drive space to Windows stuff.
So, I'm wondering, will the stuff on my iMac sync to the Macbook so I can take it with me? I'm guessing if so it would be through Back to My Mac, or if not, some other way? I do have MobileMe. Before we make this purchase I'd love to find out if anyone is using both a portable Mac and a desktop Mac and is able to sync the two of them so that you have the same, or at least some of the same stuff on both? And if you are, how are you doing it?
I'm a hobbyist with my iMac, so I'd be using mostly iPhoto, iMovie, and doing digital scrapbooking, etc., while away from home. I can do email, etc., on my iPhone.
And one more thing, my husband said he'd need some kind of docking station on his desk so that it would be easy to just lift the Macbook out of it to make it portable, and then just snap it back in when I bring it home so that he can use it in the evenings when he's home from work.
I'm thinking that would be overkill since most things he would need are built into the Macbook (speakers, keyboard, wireless internet connectivity, etc.), so all he would really need to do is attach the power cord, and plug in the desktop monitor and mouse which could be plugged into a USB hub. I also have an extra Mac wireless keyboard he could use, since I switched from the one that came with my iMac a year ago, to the new smaller slim one. I gave up on the Wireless Mighty Mouse out of frustration and went to a non-Apple brand wired mouse. I know he'll want to use a mouse and not the trackpad most of the time for comfort and ease of use.
Oh, and by the way, my husband basically just does email at home, and not even every night. He is on a computer at work all day, so he doesn't like to spend much time on one at home.
So, I guess I'm just trying to find out if this would work for us? Any comments or suggestions would be most appreciated!
Thanks in advance, Debbie and John

Lots of ways to sync data back and forth - take a look at Chrono sync for a good file level backup/sync program. It is what I have used for the last 4 years to keep my desktops and notebooks all relatively synced. (I say relatively because I found that iPhoto and iTunes in particular caused some trouble, I'll detail later.) I also found that .Mac (now Mobile Me) was helpful in keeping my calendar & bookmarks synced, not to mention several programs use it to keep their data synced.
I've seen at least one dock advertised for the MacBook and my first, second and third thoughts were: too darn expensive just to connect a couple cables! He'll be connecting a display, keyboard, power, and maybe external drive and speakers. Not too onerous at all. Get him a USB hub and be done with it.
iPhoto and iTunes: the problem can surface other places too, but it hit me most with these two. Say you grab a few pictures and put them into iPhoto on the MacBook and then promptly forget. Later in the week you grab a few more and import them into the iMac. So on Saturday you sync. You can't copy one iPhoto library over onto the other - either way you lose. Same issue with iTunes and any file you might create - but it is less likely to happen with normal word processing files. The solution I found was this: I import photos only on my desktop, never on the MacBook. If I just have to download music on my MacBook I put them on my thumb drive immediately.
Mail: all my email goes to my Gmail account and I never erase anything. IMAP makes life easy because it appears on each computer.

I can't seem to find a DVI 24 Male to ADC 30 Female adapter, which is what appears I need. Is there anything I can do to make this work? Thanks!

  • Connecting MacBook (2007) to iMac (2012)?

    Hi!
I have a broken old MacBook from 2007, i have a files on this which I would like to transfer to my reasonably new iMac which I brought in 2012.
My question(s) is what cable would I need to transfer data from my old Macbook to my iMac, would I also need a thunderbolt adapter?
    Thanks for anyone's help.

The easiest way is file sharing via ethernet(System preferences > Sharing > File Sharing), though if MacBook doesn't work, take out the HDD from MacBook then put it into external 2.5 inch HDD enclosure and connect it to iMac.

  • Connecting turntable with 2007 iMac

I have a turntable that I would like to connect to my 2007 iMac to be able to play records through the iMac.  Is there a way that the two can be connected to do that?
    Thanks for your suggestions.

The iMac's audio input is Line Level and it will not pickup the weak audio signals from guitars, mic's, component turntables or similar devices.
see > Line level - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
You will need to have the turntable connected to a receiver and then the receiver connected to the iMac's audio input port with a stereo RCA to 3.5mm cable or adapter.
    For examples:
see > Amazon.com: RiteAV - 3.5mm to RCA Stereo Female Cable - 6 inch: Electronics
or > Amazon.com: Cables To Go - 40645 - 3.5mm Stereo Male To 2X RCA Female Adapter: Electronics
Plus, then if you want to pass the audio thru from the iMac's input to output, you will also need a handy little App called LineIn.

  • Connecting my macbook with my iMac

Is it possible to connect my Macbook mid 2010 til iMac late 2012, so the Imac works as an external monitor, i have tried with mini display to mini display, and couldn't get it to work, and been wondering if i need a Thunderbolt cable instead??

What you are attempting is called Target Display Mode and should work. Please carefully read Apple's FAQ for instructions, the FAQ is called Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and is located athttp://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924
    Good luck.

  • When connecting Macbook Air to iMac, have to keep Macbook Air open in order to use the iMac as a display.

When I connect my Macbook Air to my iMac with Thunderbolt, I have to keep my Macbook Air open or else the iMac does not sense it. I've tried closing it to just use the iMac as the display, but then the iMac goes back to its regular screen. Also, I have to control everything from the MBA keyboard and touchpad- my iMac mouse and keyboard suddenly won't work. How do I fix this?

    Hi there,
Apple outline the steps to do so in the link I've posted below. If you need help with any of them, just shout.

  • Connecting Macbook with Time Capsule via Ethernet

    Hello!
I have a time capsule and a macbook. I used to backup my data with the time capsule via ethernet. Now there was an update to airport I guess and since then the menue to configure the time capsule looks different and now I have trouble finding out how to set up the connection between macbook and time capsule via ethernet. I dont want the WLAN to be used so I want the ethernet be the connecting part of both esp because i want to backup lots of data now but Im missing the setting that said use use time capsule via ethernet. I just dont know how to set it up now.
I have the ethernet cable in the very left ethernet slot next to the reset button of the time capsule and its also plugged in to the ethernet slot on the macbook. But what are the settings for this connection.
Can someone help please otherwise i think my 23GB backup will take 3 days...
    Thanks in advance
    Dine

Open the network preferences and make sure the ethernet is getting an IP from the TC.. you do not need to change any settings .. all you need is network connection.. if the ethernet is working just turn off airport for the time the backup is going on. Once you turn off airport in the MBP the connection will be forced to ethernet. You can do it more correctly by rearranging the order of preference for network connection.. but for now.. just turn off airport.

  • Why won't Apple fix the wifi connectivity problem with the iMac and new OS instead of just havin us go through hours of useless mock fixes!

I have spent hours with apple care about this problem with wifi connectivity.  According to all the posts I'm not alone.  I love my new IMAC
but i'll be glad to go back to my PC just so I can get my email without all the headaches.  It seems that Apple has lost interest in
the IMAC and all of the problems associated with the new OS.

Keep in mind that ASC is where people go to get help, so yes, you are seeing reports of people who are having WiFi connection issues. But while it might seem like there are lots of people having trouble, given the sheer number of iMacs in use, it is a very small number. Also keep in mind that WiFi isn't totally under Apple's control. There are dozens of WiFi routers. Even worse, the manufacturers of WiFi routers often release firmware upgrades to fix flaws without ever informing the consumer. And just to add to the confusion, while WiFi 801.2 n routers have been sold for several years, for most of that time there was no agreed upon standard!
So if you'd like help, first, what router do you have and have you checked the vendor site to see that it has the latest firmware?

  • How to Connect Macbook with tv?

I have a macbook n would like to connect it to my tv, ive been browsin for the cables n i think i shud buy "Mini-DVI to Video Adapter" but is that the only cable i need? my tv has s-video entrance and a video(black), audio(yellow)

The adapter is just that, it's an adapter that gives you the hole to plug the cable into. You'll also need an s-video cable. You may also want to purchase an audio cable, as the video adapter and s-video are video only. There are quite a few minijack to RCA "Y" adapters. Are you certain the yellow plug is audio? Usually those kinds of ports are yellow (video), red (stereo audio left), and white/black (stereo audio right).

  • Connect macbook to an imac

So we are using our iMac as our main computer that we connect multiple computers to in order to use files back and forth. It is limiting us to a maximum of 10 people that can connect to the main computer though, is there any way to increase that limit?

You can install the server version of OS X on the iMac, that may help. Your profile indicates the iMac is on 10.7.1, so you would need to purchase and update to 10.7.5 Server version. While you are at it I'd recommend upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 Server version, much easier upgrade than Lion which isn't easily available any longer.
