Connect MBP to hotel wifi ISP & use APexpress as a router for other puters?

I am traveling and have connected to my hotel's wifi T-Mobile connection. I've also connected my MacBookPro to my AirPort Express via ethernet cable. How can I cause the APE to send a wifi signal to my pal's windows (xp) machine ?
Is this possible ?
Thanks,
~ FFLAK

  • Connection timeout on hotel wifi - only with MacBook8.1 (810.9)  configd plug-in:8.1 (810.9)

I'm having a "Connection Timeout" issue while trying to connect to my hotel's WIFI.
I bought an ex-lease refurbished white MacBook (Build 12E55 - 2.4GHz, the last 2010 model I think) a couple of weeks ago. I bought it so I could use it while on vacation in Bali, Indonesia. I've got OS X 10..8.4 installed.
At home in Australia, this MacBook connected to my home WIFI with absolutely no issues at all.
Now that I'm in Bali, I'm surprised to find that every time I try to connect to the WIFI at the hotel (where I'm staying for a whole month), I get a "Connection Timeout" error. I'm surprised because my iPhone connects to the hotel WIFI with no problem at all, as does our two iPads and the Android phones that belong to other family members. It's only my MacBook that struggles, even though I get even better signal strength indicated on my MacBook compared to my other devices.
I can connect my MacBook to my iPhone hotspot fine, though I'd prefer to use the free hotel WIFI over my very small 3G data allowance.
So the problem isn't that my MacBook can't connect to any WIFI, because it did at home and it still can to my iPhone hotspot.
And the problem isn't with the router, because all other devices work flawlessly.
I've trawled many forums and articles trying to find a solution. Here's everything I've tried already, that I can remember. (Not in this order and not all at once.)
    Rebooted MacBook (duh)
Sitting directly under the WIFI router. (It's not a signal strength issue.)
Set up new Network > Location. Deleted Ethernet and Bluetooth PAN so it's just WIFI in the list.
    Renewed DHCP Lease countless times.
Tried manual TCP/IP variations. It doesn't help that I'm not sure what to put in the IPv4 Address field. I do know the Subnet Mask and Router IP from looking at my iPhone network info.
Tried using my MAC address as the DHCP Client ID. Also tried just using "1" or leaving it blank.
I don't know what an IPv6 is either.
Tried BootP and completely Manual setups but not really sure of the correct settings to try.
Tried using the DNS servers that I found on my iPhone network info for the hotel WIFI. (One of them is 8.8.8.8 which I think is Google's DNS thing?)
Tried checking Auto Proxy Discovery and Use Passive FTP Mode, since it was suggested as part of a solution in a forum thread.
Tried changing the MTU to a couple of other settings from an article I read. I think one was around 1453 and the other was 1494 or something close to that.
    Tried resetting PRAM
    Tried resetting SMC
Tried a variation on resetting SMC that involved pressing down the normal keys plus one extra, for 10 secs, since it worked for someone who was told to do that by an Apple Care person. (He didn't know why it worked and other forum posters thought it was supposed to have been a SMC reset.)
Checked the Network> Wi-Fi in System Information to see if the Channel is compatible. The router uses Channel 1 and my MacBook is capable of using Channel 1.
Checked my country profile. It's X1. I have no idea if that's good. All I know is that I'm in Indonesia not Australia and I'm having WIFI issues with this hotel network.
Checked the PHY Mode. Supported are 802.11 a/b/g/n. The hotel router uses 802.11n.
Made sure I was using WPA2 Personal.
Tried deleting all WIFI-related passwords in Keychain.
Tried deleting all Network-related preference files.
Tried removing all LaunchDaemons and LaunchAgents.
It's not a "lost WIFI connection when waking from sleep" issue but I tried turning off sleep anyway.
My husband even had the nerve to unplug the hotel router (small hotel, we're the only guests at the moment) for 10 minutes hoping it will reboot. But I don't know if that's the actual modem or just a WIFI repeater thing (sorry, can't remember the right terms). It didn't work anyway.
I've run out of options, other than just sucking it up and getting a big 3G data allowance since I'm here for a month.
If there is anything else I can try - perhaps working out how to set up my Network manually properly, please help me out. Here is everything in System Information that might help. I'll happily provide any other info.

Sorry. The topic title got mucked up when I tried to paste in my System Information. And I can't paste it in using my iPhone without it going haywire. I can provide any details you need.

  • HT3867 I am connected to the hotel wifi network, but the login screen does not appear.

    Hi,
I am connected to my hotel wifi network, but the login screen does not appear. I am able to access the login page on my PC, but on the iPhone it does not appear and just tries to connect to the webpage (e.g. google.co.uk), and eventually gives up. I've tried opening pages in Safari and Chrome, but none cause the login screen to appear. I have also tried trying to log into the login page that the PC opens when connected to the wifi, but the same thing happens. I am using a iPhone 3G with the latest iOS version 6.0.1.
Is there a way to make the iPhone try to open the login page?
    Ben.

I have the exact same problem as the original poster and I tried many times already the solution proposed by trstark66 and it's still not working. It's not working for both my iPad and iPhone 5. I'm using the latest iOS version available all the time. I have my iPad since 3 years and my iPhone since 1 years and I always had that problem. I'm an airline pilot so I'm always in hotels. I asked my colleagues who also have iPhones and iPads and they all have the same problems from time to time. And when I go in an apple store they all say that it's the first time they hear about that problem. I never have that problem with my PCs, my previous phone and my BB playbook. Only with my iPhone and iPad....since now 3 years...Always the same problem. I'm connected to the Hotel Network, I have an IP address but nothing popup to register with a user name, password or just to access the "I have read and accept the condition.../connect". And when I go in Safari or other Browsers, I am not redirected to a login page. All I have is a message saying cannot access the webpage because I'm not connected to Internet. I tried already hard resets, on/off Wi-Fi, automatic connexion off, forget this network, reset network setting...
My solution for now is to use my Boingo account. I connect to the hotel Network and then I use the Boingo app to connect to Internet.
But, sometimes it works the first time or suddenly for no reason.
Very funny, I was using Boingo on my ipad to write this message in my Hotel room because I was unable to use my free connection as usual. When I tried to press "Add Reply" it failed and I had the message "An error occured while trying to submit your post, please try again". The reason was that boingo was disconnected since I was taking too long to write this message. So I wasn't connected to Internet anymore. I opened a second tab in Safari and what did I see!... the login page to access the free connection from the hotel. This is crazy. Apple, you really suck with hotel/coffee hotspots... I tried for hours and nothing, now hours later I just open a new tab and it works. But tomorrow I know I will try the same and it will not work again. It shouldn't be that complicated.

My IPad connects with my hotel wifi, but does not indicate that it is a secure wifi, even though it requires a password to access - no lock symbol appears against the wifi network, hence no password request, hence no internet access - help. My collegue who also has an Ipad can access the same wifi with ease, so it must be something to do with the settings on my machine, although checking the two machines, there appears to be no difference in the settings.

My experience with hotel wifi is that it's an open, and unsecured, connection, but unless you agree to their terms on a launch page, you can't go any further or connect. Sometimes I need to force safari to come up and even make it go to a page, to trigger the auto load of the 'agree to our terms' page.
Unless your machine is work provided so maybe could be blocked from unsecured net access?

I have 2 of them that only connected for a day and then reset network settings and they connected again for a day now resetting network settings does not fix it either. My iphone used to work with my home network but after upgrading to the latest OS which is the same versions as the ipods it no longer works either. Acts the same as the ipods. It would seem that the latest tweeks to the OS is the problem with wifi connectivity.

I´d like to hook up another computer to the 24" iMac. I know there´s no hardware way since it´s integrated but maybe by using some magic box over usb or something and a bit of software?

  • MBP does not connect to a hotel WiFi

    Hi All,
I'm here in Germany since 6 days. My MBP is not connecting to a free hotel WiFi. The Airport shows full bars but the webpage is not opening. Then, i tried to restart the machine but i didn't work out. The Network Diagnostics shows that every thing is GREEN but the internet and server, they are RED (failed). However, I can join the same network using my iphone and other Windows laptop.
    Now, about the diagnostics,
-In the 1st step, I choose the Airport.
-In the 2nd, I selected the "PARKHOTEL". The network i'm trying to connect.
-The 3rd step is the question of having a DSL or cable modem and my answer is NO.
-The 4th step is there any device connected directly like switch or router and my answer is YES.
-The 5th step is to restart the router device and click CONTINUE when it is done restarting. Frankly, i can not restart the router bcoz I'm in a hotel and i'm connecting to the internet from my windows laptop and my iphone. So, i assumed that it has no issue. So, i clicked CONTINUE and the connection singe starts rotating.
-After a while, the 6th step is about any other device i can restart as a router or firewalls or managed switches connected directly to the device that just restarted and my answer is NO. Finally, the diagnostics said "Network diagnostics cannot fix the current networking problems".
    (NO RESULT ACHIEVED)
Then, I googled a pit trying to find a solution and i found the same issue. The solution was to disable the firewall and i found it already disabled in my MBP.
    (NO RESULT)
In the meantime, i deleted all other networks except for the network & the wifi connection I am trying to connect to.
    System Preferences/Network/Advance/Airport
    And i restarted my computer.
    (NO RESULT)
    Finally, i found something today.
The IP address of the Windows lap is 10.1.10.xx
But the IP address of the MBP is 10.0.11.xx
I changed the IP address of the MBP manually and i got the same issue.
    Also, (NO RESULT)
    Any ideas? Plz..

When this happens to me (top part green, bottom red), it's always dns... At check-in the hotel should have given you some info, including the IP address of the router, and the dns if it's different than the router. You know the first 3 parts -- 10.0.11 -- so you just need to figure out the fourth. Usually it's either 1 or 253, but if it's some random address then you are not going to guess it.

  • Using ASA 5510 and router for dual WAN Connections.

    Guys, neeed some help here:
    Context:
1- My company has one ASA 5510 configured with Site-to-site VPN, Ipsec Cisco VPN and AnyConnect VPN.
2- We use ASA to connect to the single ISP (ISP 1) for internet access. ASA does all the NATing for internal users to go out.
3- A second link is coming in and we will be using ISP 2 to loadbalance traffic to internet (i.e. business traffic will go via ISP1 and “other” traffic will go via ISP2).
4- A router will be deployed in front of the ASA to terminate internet links.
5- No BGP should be used to implement policy (traffic X goes via ISP1, traffic Y goes via ISP2).
    Questions:
How do I get this done, particularly, how do I tell the router, for traffic X use ISP1 and for traffic Y use ISP2? PBR is my friend?
Since I will be having 2 public Ip Addresses from the 2 ISPs, how do I NAT internal users to the 2 public Ip addresses ?.
Finally, which device should be doing the NATing? The ASA just like now or move NATing to the Router?
    Thanks
    Ndaungwe

    Hi,
Check the below link, it gives information on trasperant fw config and limilations. Based on the doc, you may need to move the VPN /anyconnect to router as well. From the routr end you may be able to set up static routes pointing to diff ISP based on traffic needs but this will be compleicated setup and can break things. Wait for other suggestions or if possible stick to ASA to terminate both links and still route the traffic to diff ISPs (Saves the router cost as well).

  • How do you set up for AirPrint an HP110A wireless printer without a PC on a wifi network using a Verizon FIOS router)

Purchasing an HP110A wireless printer for my 85 year old father who has and Ipad
This pritner is fully compatible with Airplay per HP site
    My dad has no PC
    He knows the router passcode.
    What is the process?
Will the HP printer to be purchased shortly work out of the box w/no drivers
How do you set the printer up to work on the iPad?

    Richard-
I have the HP D110 AirPrint printer.  As I recall, it was configured in Ad Hoc network mode when first received.  It was necessary to set it up to access my WiFi router before I could use it with the internet connection.  Then, as part of the setup process, it downloaded the latest firmware update from HP.  This was all done from the printer control panel, and no PC was needed.
As Pvonk mentioned, your router must be able to correctly handle Bonjour data for iPad to print to an AirPrint printer.  Go ahead and try it, it may work.  If the iPad can't find the printer, you will need to contact Verizon for help in configuring the router or getting a different router that is compatible.
By now, you should realize that a PC is needed to update the iPad.  I assume your Dad visits you when he needs use of a PC.

  • My iPad first gen (iOS5.1.1) won't connect to my home WiFi suddenly. It's worked fine for years but just stopped. All other devices do connect to the WiFi. Now, the iPad does connect to the WiFi at my workplace. Ideas on this?

My iPad (first generation iOS5.1.1.1) quit connecting to my home WiFi recently after years of being able to. All other devices in my home connect fine. I have taken every step I can find to try and remedy things including restoring my iPad to factory settings. Still nothing - when it tries to connect to my network it just spins. I took my iPad to work and it connected to the WiFi there just fine. Came back home, no good. After talking with my local Mac supplier they've suggested that maybe my router is the cause. I've unplugged it several times for lengths of up to an hour but that still isn't getting things working again. Any ideas?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Can I use it as a router for Charter?

    Hello,
I'm about to switch to charter's new 30MBPS plan and I was wondering if I could connect this to my modem and use it as my only router? Or is that not possible?

I was wondering if I could connect this to my modem and use it as my only router?
If "it" is a Time Capsule, and" it" has been first been reset back to Factory Default settings, "it" should work well with the cable modem from Charter.
Make sure that you power off the modem completely by pulling the power cable from the back of the device or from the wall AC jack and leave it off for 30 minutes before you connect the Time Capsule.
Then power up the modem and let it run by itself for 5 minutes. Then, power up the Time Capsule the same way.
Once your computer is powered back on, you can configure the Time Capsule using AirPort Utility.
