Connect my G4 and my iMac

Hello,
I have 32Gb of iMovie files in my G4 that I would like to transfer to my iMac.
Can I connect the 2 together and eventually use the G4 as hard drive and just cut and paste these files in the iMac?
Thanks for your help.
Blerodocus

Connect them with a FireWire cable, start up the G4 with the T key held down, and drag the files over in the Finder. The Finder doesn't allow files to be cut, but can copy and paste them.

  • Connecting a G4 and an iMac by airport express

I am trying to connect my iMac and my G4 wireless. I cannot use an Airport card on my G4 due to a damaged connector pin on the main board, so I bought an Airport Express Base Station, which I connect to my G4 using the Ethernet port. According to the sales people this should allow me to set up an airport network and connect to my iMac.
Using the Airport Admin Utility, and selecting "Other" as base station, an IP address is provided and the default password recognized, but an error occurs when reading the configuration of the base station.
My iMac does not find the base station either, using Airport.
I have reset the base station to factory defaults without any success,
Any suggestions what I am doing wrong?
    Greg

You really need a wireless router with ethernet ports to connect to the cable modem to do what you want to do.
The iMac would continue to connect using ethernet from the router and the G4 could as well if you run an ethernet cable from the router to the G4.
Alternately, if you do not want to run the ethernet cable to connect the G4, you may be able to use your AirPort Express and configure it to "join" the wireless network that the wireless router was creating. If the router is compatible with what Apple calls ProxySTA, you can enable the ethernet port on the Airport Express to furnish an ethernet signal to the G4.
But, you must have an AirPort Express"n" to activate this feature and there is really no way to know in advance if it will work correctly. Several product reviews have mentioned that it should be compatible with virtually any wireless network, but that would be impossible to verify.

  • Connecting "older" pc and new iMac desktop via Airport extreme

Please bear with me...I am a Mac novice. My husband and I just purchased our first mac (iMac 20" desktop)and had it up and running in 2 minutes. We got internet access immediately through the bluetooth (whose signal it is remains a mystery). We purchased the airport extreme to access the internet via our Dell's 2 y/o cable modem (comcast Motorola Surfboard)before we realized we had a hotspot in our house. We also want to use the printer that is connected to our pc with our mac. I cannot get the airport configured at all...I keep getting error messages. The first one that appears says that my wireless interface is not enabled. I went to My Network Places and set up the wirless network using a USB flash drive. I connected it to the airport's USB connection, and then to my iMac. Neither one appeared in the list of devices detected when I reconnected the flashdrive to my pc. I've tried rebooting, disconnecting and then reconnecting both the modem and the aiport from the power supply. Should I reset the airport? Help!!
    iMac 20" desktop   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

We got internet access immediately through the bluetooth

This is very likely to be a neighbour's wireless or Airport network (not Bluetooth).
    I cannot get the
airport configured at all...I keep getting error
    messages.
Don't use the PC to configure the Airport Extreme Base Station, use the iMac, it will be easier.
The first one that appears says that my
    wireless interface is not enabled.
You are probably trying to use the Airport Assistant, this will only work on a wireless computer, in order to configure an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) from a wired PC, you need to connect to the AEBS via the LAN port and then use the Airport Admin Utility.

However still configure the AEBS via the iMac.
    I went to My

USB flash drive. I connected it to the airport's
USB connection, and then to my iMac. Neither one
appeared in the list of devices detected when I
reconnected the flashdrive to my pc.
That Microsoft wireless process only works with other Windows PCs, it won't work with a Mac or the AEBS.
    I've tried
rebooting, disconnecting and then reconnecting both
the modem and the aiport from the power supply.
Try using the Mac to configure the Airport network using the Assistant.
    Should I reset the airport?
You may need to, but sounds like you haven't managed to configure it, so it will still be in the default state.
We also want to use the printer that is
connected to our pc with our mac.

  • Lost Airport internet connection between G5 and G3 iMacs

I hope you don't mind, I posted the following in internet etc. but not much traffic there...
I'm doing this from memory as not in front of either iMac. I have until now had a simple wireless internet connection as follows: G5 iMac connected by ethernet to broadband supplier which shares internet connection via Airport. This is picked up by an ethernet wireless router connected to my G3.
This has stopped working over the weekend. G3 had an amber light in network status (static DHCP address or similar) but that has now gone to green and 'connected to the internet' etc.
The internet sharing control on the G5 has full signal strength but seems to have difficulty checking status - revolving petal thingy below signal strength. But occasionally does settle on 'status fine' or similar.
Now the G3 fails to connect to the internet, G5 works just fine.
No settings have been knowlingly changed and all seem to be correct. There was a power failure for a couple of hours last week, don't know if this is related.
Thank you very much for your help.

Darrin, just back from Montreal and glad to see that great minds think alike. Often, in fact usually, problems with airport connections can be solved by rebooting the router/airport. For no apparent reason, they often go all funny, and this usually takes care of the problem,
anyway, glad you are back up and running,
    Miriam

  • Connecting an iBook and an iMac

Stupid question but I am afraid one I must ask. I am planning to get an iMac and iBook for my graphics degree, and want to be able to transfer work and files over quickly and with the minimum of ease. I have been recommended a Firewire cable or Ethernet cable, probably the former one for me. Can someone provide more info on how it would all work and pos the name of one I should get in the Apple store?
Thank you all again for all your help!

I am planning to get an iMac and iBook for my graphics degree, and want to be able to transfer work and files over quickly and with the minimum of ease.
Partly, I think, it depends on how big the files are. For smallish files (= MB rather than GB in size) you can use a Flash "memory stick" (the capacity varies according to price) for straightforward transfers. Or you can use Airport Express via your wireless network. The advantage of both of these methods is that you don't have to shut down one of the two computers first, as you do when using FireWire Target Disk mode.
But FW T-Disk mode is better (in my opinion) for larger-scale data transfers (= GB rather than MB in size). I use all three methods, according to circumstances.
By the way, I noticed that you say you want to do this with the "minimum of ease". Perhaps the minimum of fuss and the maximum of ease?

  • Cant connnect my iphone and my imac

How do I connect my iphone and my Imac?

In the box with your phone there is a cable that connects to the phone on one end and the iMac on the other. Give that a try. Otherwise we will need more specific information in order to help you because your question was incredibly vague.

My wireless keyboard no longer connects with my iMac since changing the batteries. It now shows as not connected, not paired and not configured. A friend recently connected his iPad to the iMac and since then the problem started. Any ideas to resolve this?

  • I have connected the adapter and cable from imac to GVA HD tv but nothing seems to be happening.

I have connected the adapter and cable from imac to GVA HD tv but nothing seems to be happening. Any suggestions?

Was that message showing a s dialog when selecting the tv connection as a sound output device?  I ask because I don't know the exact context of that message and never heard of it before.
It may be helpful to take a screen shot of both that message and also the list of the sound output devices while the tv is connected.
You never specified your model (year) of your imac so I don't know its limitations.  Maybe some version doesn't support sound through the mini-displayport (hard to believe any model wouldn't with mini-displayport).  But if that is the case you may have to resort to analog stereo from you stereo line out output jack to your tv.
One final thing.  The mini-displayport adapter you have may not support audio.  That was a possibility a few years ago.  That is why most places that sells these things also explicity specify whether the adapter supports audio.  For example, monoprice's adapter:
Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt® to HDMI® Adapter w/ Audio Support
or even the Moshi adapter sold through the apple store.
Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support
Note both these adapters explictily say they have audio support.

  • Problems with wireless connection between new macbook and older imac

I have just bought a 2.0 ghz macbook core2duo and am unable to connect to my wireless internet network at home. My wireless connection is set up through the airport card in my 17" flat panel imac (i.e. I am using the imac as the internet base station). I had an old clam shell macbook (which just died hence the new macbook) and still have a 400 mhz graphite SE iMac which both connec(ed) to the network perfectly for years. But the new macbook will not connect. It will connect when connected via ethernet. The imac uses Tiger.
I have tried resetting the name of the network, using encryption and not using encryption, but nothing helps. The macbook appears to see the network (although no bars register in the airport connection icon) but I always get an error message when trying to connect.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

I am not actually using a router as I am using the airport card (non express i believe) in my iMac to send the wireless signal. My modem is Motorola but not sure which model. I have Comcast cable internet service

On an additional note, I've purchased a wireless router and everything connected on the first attempt.  It just vexes me that the built-in wireless isn't working as a router.  Is this another example of "Mac only plays with Mac"?

  • When I connect my iPod3 to my Imac, the memory shows 13GB or so assigned to "other" (color coded yellow). What is this "other, and can I clear it?

When I connect my iPod3 to my Imac, the memory shows 13GB or so assigned to "other" (color coded yellow). What is this "other", and can I clear it?

The "Other" section on your iPod consists of several different things including album artwork, files you may or could be storing on it externally when using the iPod as a storage disk, the iPod's software/OS, as well as corrupt files that are leftover from failed sync operations with iTunes or are no longer recognized by the iPod's software or iTunes. The size of other is usually quite minute, around less than a GB, sometimes a little more (depending on the amount of media stored on your iPod).
In order to clear this space out, you'll need to restore your iPod to factory settings in iTunes.
