  • Connecting stereo speakers to an iMac

I am thinking about making the final jump and just trashing my stereo and running all my music through my iMac. Three questions:
1.) Is the output of an iMac going to be high enough quality to sound good through my stereo speakers?
2.) Is this done by simply connecting a set of stereo speakers to my iMac through the headphone jack?
3.) My current stereo is hooked up to three sets of speakers (one set in each of three rooms) and I'm wondering if I can split the output signal from my single headphone jack so that the music comes out of all three speakers.
4.) I'm incredulous that my little iMac will be able to produce quality sound equal to my stereo system. Am I wrong? (My wife will only allow this change if I guarantee that she won't even notice a difference.)
    Thanks in advance!
    Peter Booth

    Hi Peter,
    1. the output is good enough to run external speakers through (you'd need to have the hearing of a bat to notice the difference. Only the very highest and ver, very lowest of frequencies are lost.)
    2. yes the headphone jack will work (if you iMac has an 'output' jack though, use it instead.)
    3. Yes, you will lose ouput accordingly (is the stereo designed to run two speakers is running six, all speakers will recieve only 1/3 signal, unless you install extra capacitors in your amps to compensate for loss of output.
    4. refer to answer 1
    Kind Regards,

  • Connecting USB Speakers to 2013 iMac without Airplay?

Have new 27" iMac (Intel i5 May 2013 build) and find no way to hook up external USB speakers.  System's preferences offers no external opiton beyond Airplay which I hope to avoid.  I don't know the distinction between USB 2 and USB 3, but wonder if my two year old speakers have an older version of USB connection and whether it will work.  Thanks for any help with this newbie question.

Thanks, BD.  I've been reading about target disk mode which sounds like it might be an appropriate solution for getting my photos and music to the new iMac.  If I understand it, it sounds like I would connect the old MBP to the new iMac with a Firewire 800 cable (with Thunderbolt adapter for the iMac).  The iMac would be running while the old MBP would be started up in Target Mode -- either by holding the T key while booting, or by restarting after selecting the Systems Disk in System Preferences>Mac HD>Restart.  The target MBP should come up in Target Mode and mount in the Finder on the iMac.  This should allow copying the iTunes Files from the MBP to iTunes on the iMac.  Similarly I've read this would enable me also to copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder of the MBP to the Pictures Folder of the iMac.  I'm nervous about whether copying is a simple drag-and-drop, or perhaps a multistage process that requires knowing where precisely to place the new files.  The process on the iTunes seems critical since I'm moving 125 GB.  Still, the concept seems like it might be relatively straight forward as long as I don't get confused about which computer is which, and whether I am dealing with the files themselves or the whole Library folder.  In the case of iPhoto, I believe I'm copying the whole Library from Pictures on MBP to Pictures on iMac.  On the iTunes, I'm not sure if I'm copying the files into the iMac iTunes, or simply copying the Library from MBP Music to iMac Music.  If you have any insight on Target Mode, it might help me decide whether that's the way to go.  Thanks for your replies.  It's nice to know someone out there actually understands this stuff.  Best, Dean

  • Connection monitor speakers to an iMac

Hi there. Everytime i try connect my speakers to my iMac it makesa really annoying static noise from the speakers even when audio is playing through them. I never have this problem if i plug them into my macbook pro and also the same problem doesn't occur when I plug headphones into my iMac so I cant figure out where the problem could be coming from. Does anyone know how to solve this? such as getting a soundcard to turn the analogue signal into a digital one.
    Thanks.

Do you possibly have the speaker system plugged into the same electrical outlet as the iMac? Sometimes you must isolate the two from one another on separate electrical circuits to eliminate this issue.

We did that, but it just doesn't seem to be able to connect. So basically we tried to connect to our network and insert the password, but afterwards it does nothing. Weird thing is also that the network symbol (top right of the screen) says that it has been connected, but when I go look at the system preferences --> network, it states that it has not been connected

  • How to connect my mini-dv camcorder to new imac with no firewire

I have a Sony Mini-DV camcorder (Handycam) and used to connect it via firewire to my last iMac.
My new iMac doesn't have firewire - just thunderbolt & usb.
Is there a way I can use this camcorder on my new iMac? Are there adaptors, etc.?
    Thanks.

As far as I know, all recent iMacs still have a firewire 800 port.
So you would need a firewire 400 to 800 adapter.

Your answer is likely in Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apple Support If you are familiar with this document, please re-read it and I suspect you may find something you either missed or are doing incorrectly.

  • 2009 24-inch iMac 3.06GHz (EMC no. 2267).   I don't get any audio when connecting my Sony HD TV to my iMac via mini DisplayPort. Is there a fix or hardware upgrade?  I'm using a Kanex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable w/ audio support.

You can connect the audio from your iMac to your TV using a mini jack (like headphones plug) to rca (regular red and white audio connectors used on every TV,DVD, etc) cable.
On your TV, you need to be able to set the audio for the HDMI input you will use to "analog" and connect the rca end of the cable to the analog inputs on your TV.

  • I installed 10, iTunes no longer connects to airport Remote Speakers

Boy, this is real irritating. I just use iTunes to stream internet radio to my stereo. It was all working fine, then I updated to v10 and nothing works anymore.
BIG PROBLEM...the option to choose computer speakers or remote speakers DISAPPEARED. Well, it was there for a second after I ran iTunes 10 for the first time, then the option DISAPPEARED.
Heck, I even unistalled everything and went back to v9.2.1....But the same problem...ITS GONE!
Now even I can't get iTunes to even connect to my Airport Express at all to even play music on the computer speakers.
Grrrrrr. I was all bloody working till v10 came along!!!
BTW, I'm using Comodo firewall. It was all working before, like I said.

Well I uninstalled Comodo and turned on Windows firewall. I re-installed iTunes.
I went into firewall settings and iTunes was checked off (allowed) for both home & public networks. Didn't work. I saw Bonjour on there and just 'home' was checked off, so I checked off 'public' to see if it mattered.
It did work. iTunes connected to the remote speakers....but for some reason, only for a very short period, then I get a network error.
This is freaking unbelievable. It was all working fine till I stupidly updtated to 10. Grrrrrrrrr

the new iMac only come with a headphone jack - line out connection  there is not a line -in connection.
how can I connect a tape cassette recorder to the iMac and copy some of my old cassettes to itunews?

    You could try iMic:

I've been using it for years. You will also need an audio app that will allow recording - I use Sound Studio, but check the app store for others.
