Connect OBIEE to Essbase

Is the connection from OBIEE to Hyperion / Essbase supported out of the box?
Thank you.

    Hi Experts,
I am trying to connect to Essbase using OBIEE.
I am getting error when i try to Import from Multi-Dimensional .
It get a poppup as "Essbase Error 1030019".
Could you please suggest how to overcome.
    Cheers,
    Andy

    Hi All,
I am loggin in OBIEE as an administrator.
if there is version mismatch in client and server.by this do you mean that version of Essbase in OBIEE is not matching with the version of Essbase from where we are fetching the data.
Please let me know if this is the case and what will be its remedies.
    Cheers,

  • OBIEE The connection has failed Essbase Error 226246926

I recently installed BI Administration Tool 11.1.1.7 64bit on my Windows 7 machine and was trying to establish a connection to Essbase. After setting the properties for Database and Connection Pool in the Physical Layer, when I click on "Import Metadata" I am getting an error "The connection has failed Essbase Error 226246926". I choose Essbase 9 on the Database type The connection pool properties for the rest of it is all default, I even tried using Essbase 11 but still getting the same error.
Earlier, when I had BI Admin Tool 11.1.1.6, I was able to successfully establish the connection using database type as Essbase 9 but after the the upgrade I was not able to establish the connection.
I would appreciated any suggestions/inputs to fix the issue

    Hi,
his issue is fixed. tnsnames.ora file need to exist in the both OBIEE Oracle homes ( C:\Middleware\Oracle_BI1 and C:\Middleware\oracle_common )
After the 11.1.1.5 installation on my Windows Machine, C:\Middleware\Oracle_BI1\network\admin directory structure was created.
However for the 2nd Oracle Home (C:\Middleware\oracle_common), the directory structure existed only till C:\Middleware\oracle_common\network. I copied the TNS file to C:\Middleware\oracle_common\network.
    pls mark correct,if ansrwd
    thanks

  • Doing OBIEE with Essbase as datasource, anybody who has experience?

    Hello guys
Does anybody have good experience dealing with essbase data on OBIEE? Essbase doesn't seem to be a relational database like oracle, data are stored as cube. One cube contains dimesion and fact attributes with hierarchical levels defined in essbase.
I don't have experience dealing with these type of scenario, therefore I run into a lot of issues when I try to create report on answers..
Typically, when I apply any conversation functions or "SQL expression" values on date column filters or contents (such as cast(column as date), or filter on current_date on SQL Expressions) and create reports with measures, I get errors: [nQSError: 42043] An external aggregate is found in an outer query block. (HY000)
If create reports only with date column alone with the above applied, I get errors like inconsistent data type or something..
I believe that for some reasons when OBIEE sends the query to essbase and get converted into MDX, something got lost in translations.
With the same environment, I imagine if I were to create some dynamic variables with select statement, it will also not work since there is no "column" and "table" in essbase the same way as in relational database. So how would I define dynamic variables with max sales or something?
So is there any help I can get in terms of dealing with essbase on obiee?
Any pointers will be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

Without access to the rpd you're not going to get far. Yes, you can achieve both things, but it will mean writing MDX and to use MDX in both the filters and the columns is not something I'd recommend since you'll be facing loads of issues.
    Date filter:
The "normal" function you're using won't work. That's for sure. You will have to wrap the whole thing into an EVALUATE and write MDX...like the Lag function I mentioned before. If your time dimension is just taken over from Essbase in the normal drag-and-drop way, then it won't be a full "time dimension" anyway.
A column formula along the lines of this:
    EVALUATE('[Time Period].[2009-04-15].Lag(7)')
    Measure calculation:
Again, without access to the rpd this will be pretty hard to do due to the question where the aggregation actually happens. Venkat wrote about that recently.

  • Planning Webforms not connecting to the Essbase

    Hi,
When the user is trying to connect to the Webforms, below error is showing up. Same issue occured yesterday, I restarted the Essbase Server and it resolved the issue.
A substitution variable required for this calculation is undefined. Variable: CurYr
Today, I recycled all the services but still not able to connect to Essbase through Planning. And I am also not able to connect to the Essbase Server through EAS Console , I am through with this id but when clicking on the Essbase Server node, it throwing out error as "Invalid Login Credentials". I am using same user id for planning and Essbase, planning is working fine but not for Essbase
Can you please advise on this issue.
Thanks for your help in Advance.
    Regards,
    UB

    Hi,
Could someone have changed Essbase password without you knowing? The fact that you are able to login to EAS and Planning doesn't necessarily mean you can connect to Essbase with the same credentials for granted. I suggest you run Essbase in command shell (Programs->Oracle EPM->Essbase->Essbase Server->Essbase or Start->Run Type Essbase). It should show you whether there is a problem with the password or not.
One more possibility could be that your essbase server might not be starting properly at all even though services console shows you that it does. You can see what the root cause to this problem in Essbase shell.

  • Unable to Obtain a Connection to Hyperion Essbase from Planning Application

    Dear All,
    I have installed FDM+Foundation+HFM+Essbase+Planning 11.1.1.3 (Tomcat)
I have stacked with the following problem:
when I try to open my data form, I am getting
“Unable to obtain a connection to Hyperion Essbase. If this problem persists, please contact your administrator”
Validate Database Connection & Validate Essbase Connection are successful throw Manage Data Source menu
    Essbase user has admin privileges
In EAS console I can make myself sure, that my application is running
Data Form is valid (verified in Preview screen in Data Form wizard)
Can somebody help me with it?
    Best Regards,
    Siarhei

    Thanks, John
    Summary
    Symptoms
When attempting to connect to Hyperion Planning as the admin user, the following error occurs:
Unable to obtain a connection to Hyperion Essbase. If the problem persists, please contact your administrator'
    Cause
Hyperion Planning web accesses the application by making a connection to the Planning metadata in the relational repository (via Relational repository settings) and also to Essbase via the datasource settings.
Any Essbase connection issues indicate problems with the Essbase settings in the datasource or are related to the Essbase server.
    Solution
    - Edit the datasource via the Configuration Utility.
    - Test the Essbase connection and make sure that the user used to make the connection is valid and has admin rights to Essbase.
    - Restart the Hyperion Planning service once the Essbase user has been given the correct access rights.
    - Login to the Essbase Administration Services (EAS) console and right click on the Essbase server name node -> Refresh security from Shared Services
    - Expand the applications node (under the Essbase server name node) and check that there is an application with exactly the same name as the Planning application.
Note: Go to section 'manually recreating a Planning application in Hyperion Essbase, if the Planning application is missing in the above step.
    - Login to the application in Hyperion Planning web.
Manually recreating a Planning application in Essbase:
    - Login to the EAS console as admin (the Essbase user used by admin must have Essbase administrator rights)
    - Go to Essbase servers -> your Essbase server name -> right click on applications -> Create application -> Using Block Storage and enter the exact Hyperion Planning Application name then click on ok.
Note: The above step will only create the application shell without the databases.
    - Login to the application in Hyperion Planning web as admin and go to Administration menu -> Manage Database -> select database and filters (to create filter access to Essbase) and Refresh (refresh will also recreate the databases if they don't exist)

  • OBIEE with Essbase as datasource-what I need to know

I am getting into a project where Essbase is the datasource. I know nothing about Essbase but I an experienced OBIEE prof. Can anyone tell me the things I need to know about integrating Essbase with OBIEE, using Essbase cubes in obiee. I looking for some basic fundamentals of Essbase so I could successfully use Essbase cubes with OBIEE.
I find lot of materials online but not sure what I need to know for using Essbase as datasource for OBIEE. Any insight / links would be of lot of help. Thanks a million

It really depends on what you plan to do and which products in the stack you're going to use for what. If you intend to use Essbase as an aggregation layer to speed up you analysis, then you should look into learning more about fine-tuning your Essbase applications in terms of data loads, aggregation, optimizing calculations,...in terms of languages MDX and MaxL.
If you're looking to integrate applications like Workspace as well then you'll have to look at those as well.
Both areas are vast in terms of applications and functionalties so I'd suggest learning the basics and then deepening your know-how according to needs.
    Cheers,

  • OBIEE and ESSBASE federated queries..

    Hello all ,
I am working on a requirement that requires configuring federated queries using OBIEE and Essbase as an aggregation layer. I am able to configure everything except for one dimension where this dimension in Essbase uses shared members. Any help /guidance is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Sunil

Thanks for the response. I did go further from that day on the issue. But this is where I currently am stuck.
    The issue is on this:;
    1. Have a Measure in Essbase at a Grain higher than then OBIEE grain for a dimension and I need to create a report which calculated based on both the essbae measure and the OBIEE measure.
I have to create a report which would take the Essbase Measure, Divide by the OBIEE measure and display the value (Note: This OBIEE measure and the grain is only available at the OBIEE layer)
    Ex:
    Essbase Info:
    D1 D2 Amount
    x y 200
    OBIEE Info:
    D1 D2 D3 Percentage
    x y z1 30
    x y z2 70
    Desired Output
    Is
    D1 D2 D3 New Amount
    x y z1 60
    x y z2 140
The behavior I am noticing is , since D3 has no relationship to Essbase Measure, the report results with a null for the Essbase Measure (Amount in this case). I understand this is natural but am not able to figure out any other means to address this requirement. I am exploring using EVALUATE and MDX, but am not sure, if I would be able to get the desired output.
    Thanks
    Sunil

  • Unable to connect to the Essbase server from Admin console

    Hi,
I have installed Essbase Server 9.3, Client 9.3 and Administration Server 9.3 in my laptop.
The Essbase server is working fine. I am able to see all the sample applications from Excel add in. (This mean client is also working fine).
But, the problem is when i try to connect to the Essbase server, its not allowing me by producing an error:
"Unable to connect to the Essbase server please check the user name & password"
    username: admin
    password; password.
i tried several times...but its not working.
    Please advise me.
FYI, The admin server service is started already.

    Hi Subrahmanyam,
Here , there are 2 things
    1. Check, your essbase server is up and running ,and your admin service is up. Now , when you open the 'essbase admin console ' , provide user name and password as
    admin
    password
    2. After you are connected to the console i.e admin console .
    You see
enterprise view -> essbase analytic server -> under this , you might see your host name ( i.e of your laptop).
This host is your essbase server , and if you want to connect to it .Provide 'username' and 'password' ,which you have give after your essbase installation
So, conclusively, here we are dealing with 2 different sets of 'username' and 'passwords'
In step 1-> to connect to console , use 'admin' 'password'
In step 2-> to connect ot essbase server, use the credentials wchih you had given after installation of essbase server
Hope this clarifies you, as this is a lil confusion to many

  • Connecting OBIEE 10.3 to Sybase Database

I've been testing connecting OBIEE to a Sybase 12.5.4 database (ESD 7) and I am having issues when I try update row count in the Admin tool or running any Answers through Presentation Services. I can create the Physical and Business Model in the Admin tool and get the Consitency checker to run, yet when I try and return any data I get an ODBC error message. I am using the Sybase ASE ODBC driver from 2004, but OBIEE doesn't seem to work with this.
Has anyone got experience of using OBIEE with Sybase. If so, what version of Sybase and which driver are you using?\
    Thanks

Hi, i get the following error in the Admin tool:
NQODBC [SQL_STATE:HY000] [ nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred

  • Writeback from OBIEE to Essbase

    Hi All,
We have a requirement to Writeback from OBIEE into Essbase.
We are using OBIEE 11.1.1.5.0 & ESSBASE 11.1.2.1.0 Version.
    Has anyone done this before?
    Any pointers would be appreciated
    Thanks,
    Shyam

    Hi,
    I'm trying this approach.
    http://www.rittmanmead.com/2009/06/oracle-bi-ee-bulk-write-backs-to-essbase-using-japi-global-temporary-tables-and-utl_http-part-2/
The one posted in this blog.
So i believe it can be done.
    But am getting Writeback errors.
unfortunately, the system shows only write back error with two OK buttons , but doesn't show up any error msg's..
    Thanks,

  • OBIEE and Essbase- Would you yet? Do you Yet?

How many of you are using OBIEE with Essbase? IF you are does it give you the functionality you need? Is it better to wait for the next release where tree structures and asymitrical hierarchies are supported? I have mixed feeling about the current implementation and want to get others feedback

    Hi GlennS,
    1. For one of our projects ,we started with OBIEE with essbase, and we ran into issues with the current available version of OBIEE
    2. The issues mainly being , the available versions of OBIEE is not OLAP aware .So, team has faced issues with hierarchies..etc.Though, there is a way to make it OLAP aware, we were not pretty happy with overall experience.
    3. I have heard that next release of OBIEE is very much OLAP aware and would have no issue with essbase. So, we are waiting for the release .
    4. Others , pls share your experiences

What happens when you try and refresh the database, Administration > Application > Refresh Database > Select Database and Refresh
Does it still error out? If so are you sure you can login into essbase using say EAS of Maxl
If it does let you refresh, does it still error when you go back to the form?

If you are installing on Windows, there is a limitation in the default configuration of TCPIP. I wrote about it, and included the steps to fix it, on my blog at http://timtows-hyperion-blog.blogspot.com/2007/12/essbase-api-error-fix-geeky.html.
Note the error number you reported is slightly different than what I write about in the blog, but I believe I have seen this error fixed by the blog steps..

  • Write back from OBIEE into Essbase

    Hi everyone,
Questions about write back from OBIEE (11.1.1.7) into Essbase (EPM 11.1.2.3).
First of all, did anyone manage to do it ?
Secondly, what are the constraints ? (number of cells updated limited, only level 0 of the Essbase database can be updated, only existing data can be updated or things like that ?)
Thirdly, what are the best practices regarding OBIEE or Essbase security when we implement write back  ?
    Thanks for answers

    Hi,
writing to Essbase from OBIEE exist for many years...
In the past it was doing via a JSP page but since last year it's supported directly with a simple UPDATE statement.
Have a look at SampleApp 406 (current version), in the Essbase examples there is also the write back using the UPDATE statement.
Just keep in mind one thing: OBIEE is not supposed to be an entry form for Essbase or any other system, it can be used for editing values so you can dynamically change params for what-if calculations (running a calc script after updating a value) and that kind of things.
