Connect PC directly to my Mac with Ethernet?

This may be the wrong place to post this, but can I network a PC to my Mac directly with a single Ethernet cable?
Currently they're networked via a hardwired router, but I want to set up my Mac desktop for a wireless connection to an airport base station, but I still need my PC to talk to my Mac. I would actually prefer not to have my PC connected to the internet at all (so I don't want to set the PC up for wireless access), just to my Mac...

Hi Nolan!
You have a G4 dual and if I recall correctly it is gigabit capable. That means it can also use either a cross-over or a standard straight-through Ethernet cable to connect directly to your Windows computer. Otherwise you'd have to use a cross-over cable.
Connect the two with a cable and make sure file sharing is enabled on both. Each will assign itself an IP address in the range of 169.254.xxx.xxx and therefore be able to communicate with the other machine.
To make things a little easier, put them both in the same WORKGROUP. On Windows, right-click "My Computer" and select Properties. You can set a WORKGROUP name under the computer name tab. On Mac OS X, open the Directory Access application found in /Applications/Utilities. Configure SMB and put the same WORKGROUP name in there as well.
When you browse the network from either machine, you should be able to see the other.
Hope this helps! bill

  • Connecting TC directly to my macbook via ethernet cable

    Folks,
I've looked at a number of posts on this topic but I must be missing a step because it is not working. Simply want to do file transfer via ethernet.
so... I connect a ethernet cable from the TC to my Macbook - what do I do next?

    dpm,
This works for me when I have to temporarily connect the TC to my Mac via ethernet.
    *Create An “Ethernet Only” Location*
While you are physically connected to the Time Capsule via ethernet you may still be experiencing slow data transfer speeds because your Airport network is still active and taking priority.
Connect one end of a Cat-5 Ethernet cable into one of the LAN ports of the TC (<•••>) NOT to the WAN port (wheel icon). Connect the other end to your Macs ethernet port.
Next, go to System Prefs --> Network.
At the top of the window note what “Location” you are currently using, as you will need to return to this setting later.
Now, change “Location” to “Edit Locations”.
Click the “+” button and create a new location named “Ethernet Only”.
    Click “Done”.
In the Services Pane on the left, eliminate all other services using the “-” button leaving “Ethernet” only. If you choose to leave other services listed then al the very least move Ethernet to the top of the list using the Action Menu (gear button) at the bottom and "Set Service Order".
Verify that “Configure” says “Using DHCP”.
Click "Apply" in the lower right.
You should be seeing an assigned IP Address and the Status should say “Connected”. The dot beside “Ethernet” should be green.
Now begin your backup or transfer of files.
You should still have internet access during this period.
Once the backup/transfer is complete, remember to change the Network Prefs “Location” back to “Automatic”, or whatever setting it had originally been, to restore Airport connectivity.
Let us know if this resolves your issue.
    Cheers!

  • Can't use my TC as bridge with ethernet

    Hi all --
Here's my set-up : I use my ISP box as wifi router. I added my Time Capsule wirelessly to the existing network.
Wireless network works fine : I can access Internet and the TC drive.
Here's the problem : I'd like to connect a PC via ethernet to the TC in order to access the web (the PC doesn't have wifi). I get no connexion...
I tried to connect my Macbook to the TC with ethernet and got the same result.
Here are some bits of info : the TC gets its ip address (192.168.1.21) via dhcp from my adsl box, BUT both the PC and the mac get a different IP address (i.e. 194.169.x.x) when connected to the TC via ethernet. Could it be that the TC is assigning ip addresses even though it's designated to act as a bridge ?
I am at loss. Thanks for any help.

on the summary screen, I have "wireless mode : join a wireless network" (may not be the exact wording since I'm on a foreign system), and the IP Adress is 192.168.1.21.
Again, the TC is NOT connected to the ISP box via ethernet but Wifi.
On the Internet tab, I have :
    - connect via : wireless network
    - configure IPv4 : via DHCP
    - IP Address : 192.168.1.21
    - subnet : 255.255.255.0
    - router : 192.168.1.1
    - DNS server : 192.168.1.1
    - Connexion sharing : off - bridge mode.
    Hope it helps...

My apple id attached to my itunes account has expired and i have forgotten the password that was attached to it! I have created a new apple id but cannot transfer it to my itunes which all my apple products connect up to on my mac with all my pictures etc on!?! HELP!

My apple id attached to my itunes account has expired
They don't expire. As far as anyone knows Apple IDs live on forever - if you forgot its password use https://iforgot.apple.com. Good luck with the answers to whatever security questions it asks.
... I have created a new apple id but cannot transfer it to my itunes which all my apple products connect up to on my mac with all my pictures etc on!?!
Right! That's the reason you do not create a new Apple ID.
As far as Apple is concerned a new Apple ID is a completely different user, with absolutely, positively no access to anything available to any other Apple ID.
Concentrate your efforts on resetting the password to your old Apple ID. It has not expired, and is the only way to use all your existing iTunes purchases, App Store purchases, computer authorizations... etc. Forget about the new Apple ID you just created.

  • OK, Downloaded OSXVCN And Want To Connect To My Neighbor's Mac, How?

Hi folks. I just downloaded OSX VCN for my iBooK G4, OSX 10.4.7 and want to connect to my neighbor's Mac with the same OS. She and I want to experiment and see if we can get this going. Does she download the same app I did? Am I the viewer or server?
Now, where and how do we configure our Macs to link up? Do we go into sys preferences and do all this stuff? She wants to see if I can run her Mac from mine and vice versa. We both have DSL, Wi_Fi, etc. We will use Safari right or Firefox and go to some website. Do we have to have a JAVA applet? Heard this somewhere. Anyway, I went to the VNC support site and I am totally confused on proper configuration. The FAQ and help deal is all over the place.
Now, my roommate has a PC laptop, Windows XP Pro and I want to try to do the same link up after I get the 2 Macs together. All this network stuff is a new thing for me, so I want to learn the proper and fastest way to configure.
Suppose one of my clients in Arizona wants me to check out their computer using VNC or someone wants me to tutor them with MS PowerPoint?
Does anyone have an easy step by step way to link up the computers?
    Thanks for any help steve

OSX supports VNC by default. To configure it go to system PReferences>Sharing and check REmote Desktop. Then click on the Access PRivelages button. You may wish to make another user jsut for VNC. If so make that user and then come back here. Choose the user you want to give access and check VNC Viewers may control screen with password. And enter password. Click on ok. Then click the start button to start the service. For someone to connect to you you must now thier ip address or DNS nameYou would enter that into the client along with a username and password.
As for windows you can use VNC but it requires installing a VNC service on the machine to be controlled. Instead you can use Microsoft's REmote Desktop Client and have them enable RDC's on thier computer. However this can only be done with XP Profesional and Server editions of windows.. NOT XP home... Not sure about MEdia Center edition.

  • Suggestions on how to connect iMac *directly* to Maxtor Shared Storage?

i know that using Time Machine to back up to my Maxtor Shared Storage over my network isn't an option right now... So in the meantime, I would like to just connect my Maxtor drive directly to my iMac -- but I can't figure out how.
There is no way to connect it via USB, and there is no firewire port. The Apple guy at Best Buy said to use the ethernet cable to connect the external hard drive to my iMac, but I can't get my iMac to recognize the drive that way.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Right now my Maxtor drive is connected via a router no problem... But In order to use Time Machine, the drive needs to be directly (via cable, etc) connected to my iMac...
There is no firewire port on my Maxtor drive.
I did go to Best Buy (and Office Max, and Office Depot) to buy a USB cable... The cable I need doesn't exist... For example they are like this:
    http://www.coolgear.com/images/as340823as.jpg
But BOTH my iMac and Maxtor drive have ports that take the USB cable-end shown on the left in the image above. There is no cable that is the same on both ends...
So, how do I get my computer to recognize/mount my Maxtor drive when I connect it directly to the iMac via ethernet cable (that is what the Apple guy at Best Buy told me to do)? I can't find anything at all in the Maxtor documentation about this...
    Thanks for reading...

  • Directly Connect Two Macs Via Ethernet

This has certainly been answered before, but a quick search didn't give any results. So here goes ...
I wanted to connect two macs via ethernet. I use the mount tool in finder "connect to server" all the time with machines on a network, but I've never done with with two macs directly connected.
So I connect them and my first instinct is to check the IP address of the machine I want to connect to. I then go to "connect to server" and type it in using the AFP protocol, but it doesn't work.
At this point I'm stumped and not sure what to do. I don't use the "network" item in the finder sidebar very often but I clicked it, and sure enough the machine I want to connect to was listed, and I was able to connect / mount.
So here's my question ... if I wanted to use "connect to server" tool, or even mount it manually with the mount command, how would I do it? Is it using AFP still to mount and the IP address is just bogus? Something else going on?

But I'm telling you I tried using the IP address ... here, let me try again ...
I find this address on the machine I want to connect to: 169.254.177.122
I put this into "connect to server" on the machine I want to connect from: afp://169.254.177.122
It spins for a while, then says it can't connect. Strangely, if I do a cmd-i on the machine in the network sidebar, it says: nfs:// automount ... into /Network
So are you sure putting in the ip should work? If so what am I doing wrong?
Okay ... plot thickens. When I cmd-i after I connect, it indeed says it is an AFP connect, but it gives the "local" name, say powerbook.local. But then, if I "ping powerbook.local" if gives me back the same IP I tried in connect to server. Huh?
    mbp:~ rjcarr$ ping powerbook.local
    PING powerbook.local (169.254.177.122): 56 data bytes
Weird. It isn't that big of a deal ... I just like to know what is going on.

Since the MacBook Pro currently works, you should put it next to the iMac and compare the network settings for AirPort in System Preferences Network pane Advanced. Also, if you want to start off with the default network settings, you can use Location drop down menu and select +Edit Locations+. Then click the plus sign to create a new location. Set up that new location.
On System Preferences Network pane, AirPort should appear at the top of the list (in the sidebar). To change the service order, click on the gear icon and select +Set Service Order+.
Some additional tests you can try, on top of seeing if it works with (1) WEP security disabled and (2) a direct wired connection to the router.
If you get it to work with either (1) or (2), be sure to run Software Update at least two times to apply any recent updates from Apple. See if that makes any difference to using AirPort with WEP back on.
    (3) Start up in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
I don't know if any third-party software has been installed on the iMac at this point, but Safe Mode will start up with only the essential Apple extensions and processes running. See if it works any better in Safe Mode.
    (4) Create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. Try connecting with AirPort in the new account.
    (5) Connect the MacBook Pro to the router with a wired Ethernet connection. Make sure its Internet access works. On System Preferences Sharing pane, set it up for +Internet Sharing+ so that it is set to +Share your connection from Ethernet - To computers using AirPort+. On the iMac, try to connect to that wireless network and access the Internet.
That last one (5) may be a good one to try first. It would at least show that the iMac's AirPort is working - you can even set it up to use WEP. If you have any questions about using the +Internal Sharing+ feature, please ask.
