Connect Power mac to laptop?

I know this is probably a stupid question, but;
is it possible to connect a G5 Power mac to a MacBookPro so that the laptop is effectively the screen?

Hi Oldham, and a Warm Welcome to the Power Mac G5 Forum!
Although not specifically about the Pro, there is (possibly) a yes here

  • Connecting Power Mac 9500/200 to network to transfer data to iMacs

I have recently had two of my macs stolen an old G5 Power mac and a new iMac 27" I used to use the G5 as a go-between to transfer files from my Power Mac 9500/200 to my network because the PM 9500/200 could not see the iMacs and vice versa. Is there any  way of connecting them now, I believe there were some problems with  networking such an old system before is this still the case?

Very little that is compatible with the 9500 is with the 10.7 or later Macs.

  • Can I and how do connect power mac to imac so I can use imac display

Is there a way I can use my imac and power mac together.
My purpose is to use the display of the imac when using the power mac.
If it possible please be so kind to tell me how to.
    Thank you!

    Hi Howard Herrick;
I doubt it because to the best of my knowledge you are only going to find connectors on the iMac to connect and external monitor to it not to connect another computer to the iMac's screen.

  • Connect Power Mac G4 to iMac via ethernet

I have a G4 Power Mac running OS 9.2.2 with 400MHZ, a whopping 40GB hard drive, with 320MB RAM. As well as an 27" iMAC running OSX Lion 10.7.5 with the 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, and 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory. The iMac is connected to the internet via a Netgear N600 WNDR3400v2 router.
I'm hoping I can connect the two MACs through my router in order to transfer some files from the Power Mac to the iMac, and am looking for step-by-step instructions to do so, if this is possible.

    BeavisORButthead wrote:
The OS 9 File Sharing - Apple Support document link you offered was what I was looking for, step-by-step instructions, however it did not work. I was interested in the "How to create a small network" link within that document, but it did not link to those instructions. Perhaps the link is nit supported anymore.
I have both my G4 and my iMac linked into my Netgear N600. The Netgear router LAN settings are setup so that the router can be used as a DHCP server.
When I select "connect to server" from the Go menu on the iMac and type in the computer name or owner name it fails to connect. When I browse to find a server, the only thing that shows up is a numeric name that connects me to my printer(?) because it contains a folder named "canon_memory"
When I select "chooser" from the apple menu of the G4 and select AppleShare, nothing shows up in the "Select a file Server" window. I then click on "Server IP Address" button and type in the IP address of my iMac, I get a reply that reads "No response from the server. Please try again"
Can you tell if I am missing any steps?
I'm afraid I don't have any OS 9 & 10.7 systems that I can test on. I think it was tricky to get Apple file sharing to work on OS 9 at least via TCP/IP. Apple do not support OS 9 now, so I do wonder if the 10.7 AFP server will work well with it.
You may want to try the following for the connection server IP address
    afp://[your-serrvers-ip-address]
    or
    afp://[your-servers-ip-address]:548
    or just
    [your-serrvers-ip-address]:548
Obviously you should check that file sharing works on another system to be sure that 10.7 is sharing correctly. I would also consider using a USB stick, firewire drive or Target disk mode until you can get it working.

  • Connecting Power Mac G5 dual 2.0ghz  to a tv - DVI to VGA

I have a dual 2ghz G5 that I'd like to connect to my TV which has a female VGA connection. I have a DVI cable that I was using with a monitor, and a DVI-VGA male adapter to connect the computer to the TV. I want to use the TV as the sole monitor. I changed the resolution to be 800x600 in case that was the issue, but I still can't get the TV to recognize the signal. I read somewhere that typical adapters suitable for PC use may not work for Macs because there may be some kind of signal difference. Help!

  • Connect Power Mac directly to Airport Express

    Here is my situation:
I have a PC hooked up through ethernet to a wireless router/modem (came with verizon subscription) in my living room. I also have a Powerbook G4 that I connect to the internet wirelessly. Everything works great. I just picked up a Powermac G5 Quad the other day that I use in my loft and it didn't come with the airport card. My question is, can I plug the Airport Express into the wall and plug my Powermac directly in to the ethernet port, taping in to the wireless signal of the modem/router. Unfortunately I don't have any phone outlets in my loft.

My question is, can I plug the Airport Express into the wall and plug my Powermac directly in to the ethernet port, taping in to the wireless signal of the modem/router.
The only way for the AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) Ethernet port to be active is if the AX is set up to be a relay/remote base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Unfortunately, only a very few non-AirPort base stations will work with the AirPorts for WDS. (ref: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php?title=WDSLinked_routernetwork)

  • How do I connect/network my powerbook to my old power Mac?

I have an "old" Power Mac 500 MHZ G4, that I bought in 2000. It works okay aside from being slow.
I recently bought a new Power Book 1.67 GhZ.
I tried connecting the two computers via firewire, thinking I would be able to see each computer as an icon on the desktop the same way I see my external harddrives when I connect them up.
I'm hoping I would be able to manipulate things in my power mac using my keyboard on my laptop. I guess the main plan is to use the powermac as an external drive.
They don't seem to recognize each other. Is there anything I can do to make my computers get along? Did I pick the right category? Is this actually networking? Something tells me it should be easier than all this. Help appreciated!
Oh yeah! The Power Mac 500mhz, is running OS X 3.7, the Power Book is running OSX 4.8.

If you aren't already doing so, start up one computer with the T key held down, or use these instructions to set up a FireWire network.

  • Power Mac Dual 1.8 Ghz: How do I connect to wireless network?

    HELP!!!
I have this Power Mac Dual 1.8 Ghz with 10.4.11 OS. I used to use wire cable to connect the internet, but now the place I rent recently only provides wireless network. I was able to connect wireless network with my Windows Laptop.
Question: How do I connect my Dual 1.8 OS 10.4.11 with wireless network? I only see Internal Modern, Built-in Ethernet and Build-in FireWire options.

You can go the OWM route and get the airport extreme card and antenna

Google the part numbers for more vender choices,
Or, you need to get a PCI WiFi card and antenna. BDAqua or Japamac have posted alternatives which are actually a little cheaper than the Apple parts.
The third alternative is a USB-based wireless adapter.

    HI
I have recently bought a Canon MP230 printer and connected to my Mac Mini 10.8.3 usb port.

To do that I intalled Bonjoure in my Windows 7 latpot and set the printer connected to MAc Mini as default printer.
Upto this point every thing works fine.
When I tried to issue print from my Windows 7 laptop the printer gets activated the power button start blinking . But it just pass a page from
input tray to out tary without printing  a single line. I have looked into cups server page at my mac mini. It shows that the job fired from windows

I treid a lot debug it myself . But no luck yet.
Please help me. I am very upset.

I just updated to 10.8.3 today, and my computer and Apple TV won't even recognize each other now.  I have absolutely no advice, but wanted to throw this in so you (and Apple) know you're not the only one.

  • Why won't my Power Mac G5 not connect to my Wifi?

My Power Mac G5 will not connect to my Wifi. I have tried rebooting and other methods, and none seem to work. Any advice or tips would be much appreciated!

I had the same problem, my G5 didn't find any wireless network anymore.
After doing lots of trouble shooting as advised on various websites I finally had as last resort a look inside my G5 and sure enough I found one of the connections wasn't plugged in!
I normally don't use WIFI very often on my G5, so I can't pin point when it stopped, but having said this, I did have my G5 in the Apple store 3 months ago to get a new graphic card. Surely they would have seen the issue and fixed it at the same time, one assumes.
Anyway, after fiddling around for at least 30 minutes, because I have a Raid card installed and it's covering half of the wifi card, I finally managed to plug in the tiny button and voila the wireless network was working again.
To find out where your wifi card is, I found this service guide, explaining all the inside parts and where they are.

  • How can i use my smart TV as a second monitor for my Power mac (2010) via HDMI cable? i've made the connection but no options show in system prefs display.

How can i use my smart TV as a second monitor for my Power mac (2010) via HDMI cable? i've made the connection but no options show in system prefs display.
    the computer:Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.9.5), 2 x 2.66 Ghz 6-Core intel Xeon
    the TV: LG Smart tv

The Mac uses a highly-parameterized universal Driver for every display. The parameters are set at certain times when a query is sent to your display. The display MUST answer with its name and capabilities, or the screen stays dark. A TV set that is off or "not paying attention" because it is set to a different port when the query occurs will rarely answer, and so will often remain dark.
You can use tools in the System Report to see whether your display has been detected at all. If it has, the report will look something like this, but its name will appear:
The times when the query is sent are:
    • at Startup
    • at wake from sleep
    • when the Mac-end of the cable is inserted
    • when using the Option ( Detect Displays ) button in displays preferences

  • I have an older Power Mac and it does not have the ability/hardware to connect to my wireless network. It is on 2nd floor which has no ethernet connections available. How can I get connected wirelessly?

I have an older Power Mac desktop computer. I do not believe it has the hardware to connect wirelessly to my wireless network. The computer is located on the 2nd floor of my house where there are no ethernet network connections so I would have to use wireless to connect to the internet. I have a wireless LinkSys router downstairs that I use to create my wireless network. I also have a Time Capsule upstairs but without the ability to plug an ethernet network cable into it, I cannot use it to get internet access t the computer.
What hardware can I add to give me the abiity to connect the Power Mac to my wireless network?
Is there a way perhaps to link routers? IE. Can I somehow have my existing wireless router downstairs connect wirelessly with the Time Capsule upstairs that i could then plug the Power Mac into for connectivity?
Not sure what version of OS this computer is currently using but do know it does not have the newer dual Intel processors. As such I am unable to update to newer OS versions.

While uselessSABOTAGE's advice is great, in case of future issues, it would helps us in the future if you would post accurate tech specs of your model iMac.
You info states you have an older IMac PowerMac, but is also says your OS X version is OS X 10.7.2.
This is not possible. OS X 10.7.2 Lion only runs on Intel CPU Macs.
Please, go up to the Apple symbol in the upper top left of OS X main menu bar. Click the symbol. Then click About this Mac. A popup window appears that gives some basic info. Then, click the More Info button and both post your iMacs complete specs by selecting/highlighting all of the info and copy paste this into a reply to this post, editing out your iMac's serial number. Then update the info you posted in your user profile with some of this new found data for future postings.
